Between the Wasteland and Sky

Chapter 1: Wish

~*~

At long last the Shikon No Tama was complete. Kagome rolled it between her forefinger and thumb with interest. They had gone through all this trouble for such a small thing?

It had been a few days since all the shards were gathered. Inuyasha had shown great confidence that without the jewel, Naraku was as good as defeated. They had only to find his whereabouts now. But Kagome had her own doubts. Once Naraku realized that the jewel had slipped through his fingers, he would be furious. Since they had never actually fought Naraku by himself, they had to be prepared for everything.

The wind whistled through the trees and Kagome sighed at the peace and beauty of the forest. If only everything could stay this way. Unconsciously, her thoughts switched to Inuyasha and her grip on the jewel tightened. Would the jewel change their relationship and how they acted around each other? Kagome no longer truly believed he wanted to be a full demon, but Inuyasha's actions could be unpredictable. Hopefully he understood that Kagome, and the rest of his friends, liked him just the way he was.

`You'll just have to trust his judgment, he's not stupid,' she told herself. But another part of her ached to be sure. She didn't want to lose him to Naraku or to himself.

"I just wish that he and I could always be together no matter what. Given the right circumstances, we could be so much more to each other."

A glowing hue engulfed the hand still clutching the jewel. For a moment Kagome thought she heard laughter before darkness consumed her.

Kagome opened her eyes to darkness. She seemed to be floating in an endless expanse of black. The part of her mind that would normally make her struggle and scream for help seemed subdued and the only thing she thought at first was how strange this was.

"So you wish to be together with the hanyou do you?" A strange ominous voice pierced the darkness. The voice made her head pound and she bit her lip.

"Who's here? Where is here exactly? And how did you know what I said about Inuyasha?" Kagome's voice shook with fear of this unknown being.

Her response was a low chuckle that seemed to echo everywhere at once. "You are at the entrance to the Realm of the Gods. A mere mortal like yourself should be flattered to be here. Do not worry; I have no intention of harming you. You're much too valuable to the future of your world."

"What do you mean? And why have you brought me here?" Kagome looked a bit shaken to be at such a place. "I want to go home………" she muttered under her breath.

"I can not elaborate on your future, human. What I have said already is too much. As to why I brought you here, it is because of your wish." The god's voice soothed Kagome somehow and she relaxed.

"But I didn't mean to make a real wish. It was an accident……" Her mind was becoming clouded by exhaustion as every moment passed.

"Ah but you did, and perhaps it was no accident. Anyway, your wish was not very specific, and when making wishes on such things like the Shikon No Tama, you must be specific. I can not change your wish at all because of the power of the jewel. You wished that you and Inuyasha COULD always be together, not that you WILL be together. Do you understand the difference?"

Kagome nodded. "Does this mean my wish was wasted and the Shikon No Tama is gone?"

"Not exactly. You cannot simply make a wish and have nothing happen. It is not in the jewel's make up. Therefore your wish must be granted. The reason you were brought here is because your wish is one of the rare cases where a test must be made."

"I don't understand." The foggy feeling in her mind was growing with each passing minute.

"It is difficult to explain. Only know this: To find out whether you and Inuyasha could always be together forever you must be placed into a new situation. If the two of you end up in love or together then you CAN be together forever. Understand?"

"I don't really understand, but I think I know what you're getting at. You're going to change something about how Inuyasha and I live and see if we fall in love?"

"Yes. What will happen is the two of you, and most of the people who have had a great effect on your lives, will be put into a new scenario, or a new type of world. The world I've chosen is completely covered in desert and the people only have crude technology. Both of you will not remember each other at all."

"But then we have no chance! We may never even run into each other!" Kagome's eyes had become very heavy and it took a great effort to stay awake.

"Heh, fate will throw you two together, but whether you stay together is up to you. I can see you are becoming tired; I'm not surprised. It takes great energy for mortals to come here. Sleep now and when you wake up you will be in the wasteland world. After this test, I shall bring you back here to me. May you succeed, for your world's sake………"

Kagome's mind registered these words and she wanted to ask a million questions. But most of all she wanted to take back her wish. Then the familiar feeling of sleep overtook her, and all she remembered about her world, Inuyasha, and the Realm of the Gods washed away like sand in the sea.

Well that was more of a prologue. I didn't want to get too into the story yet or I'd probably have a hard time finding a stopping point! It's going to be hard as it is. ^-^ Well for those of you who read Transfer Student Inuyasha and heard this was an AU, it is. It just sort of seems like a canon fic in this chapter, but that will all change. The plot should thicken a lot next chapter too! Hopefully I'll write the next chapter tonight to be released tomorrow, but I might get delayed. I'm glad to be writing another fic! Cheers and thanks for all who read, even if you don't review.^-^
