Between the Wasteland and Sky

Chapter 4: Many Questions, Few Answers

~*~

To Inuyasha it seemed as if this moment were frozen in time. What would this girl do now that she knew his name? He knew what most people thought of him. How could he expect her to understand when they just met? But with this girl, there seemed to be something special.

Kagome's eyes glittered with suspicion for only the smallest moment, then her face broke into a smile and she gave him a big hug. Inuyasha just stood there awkwardly, unsure of what to do.

"Wow so you must be the great Demon Inuyasha! That's incredible; you must have some stories to tell from your travels!" Kagome's face became animated with great interest.

Inuyasha was taken aback by this reaction. "You mean you've heard of me, and you aren't afraid of me?"

Kagome looked down and noticed that all the villagers were still staring up at the two. `Uh oh, time to go somewhere else' she thought. "Um, Yash! Why don't we go get some lunch?"

The boy had followed her gaze and nodded in agreement.

A few minutes later the two were sitting cross-legged on the clay floor of an old abandoned hut. This had been one of Kagome's hiding places, and it had a nice window that showed the endless wasteland to the east.

That is, Kagome USED to stare out that window. At the moment her eyes couldn't leave Inuyasha's face. To her it seemed that a miracle had occurred. For some reason the gods had sent this wanderer to her village, and she couldn't be gladder! For once there was something exciting in this village.

"Uh, Kagome?" The boy's eyes turned sheepishly towards the floor. Suddenly she realized that she had been staring.

"Sorry Inu-I mean Yash." She leaned in and whispered into his ear, "I hope you don't mind being called that while we're in village grounds. I'm afraid of what the villagers might do if they knew you're name. You do have a, er, violent reputation."

Inuyasha nodded his head slightly, but was still too confused to speak. Too many events had happened too quickly.

"So, why did you come here Yash? If you don't mind me asking." Kagome noticed that his eyes turned sad once again, as if he were thinking about something.

He didn't know if he wanted to answer that question. Actually he didn't know if he COULD answer that question. He opened his mouth but the words just wouldn't come. Where would he even start? "I came……..because of a dear friend of mine. She died, and nothing else was keeping me in that city."

Kagome knew when not to press a question. However she was simply brimming with questions, she had to ask more.

"Kagome I have a question for you if you don't mind. Why aren't you afraid of me like all the others? You know what it is I've done." One of his fists gripped his haori in what seemed to be a sign of anger or regret. Kagome decided maybe it was a little of both.

The girl laughed, which surprised Inuyasha more than any answer would have. "Well why should I fear you? I saw you just now, about to fight for a village in the middle of nowhere with only your bare hands. How could anyone willing to do that be bad, even a Demon like you?" She winked.

The boy smiled back at her. "I can tell I have friends here, and robbers never sat well with me."

This was an odd answer from someone like him. Maybe the legends of the Desert Demon were wrong? The man who could slaughter even those he loved if it suited him. The one who roamed from city to city in search of something but never finding it. He was the one who caused the destruction of Phoenix City. She didn't want to upset him by asking more about his past so she decided to figure these things out later.

Inuyasha stood up and walked to the doorway of the hut. His white hair fluttered a little in a breeze bound for the west. It was time for him to move on.

"Kagome, I'm sorry to say this since we've just met, but I have to leave now." His soft voice seemed so fragile in the quiet village.

The girl despaired. He couldn't leave! They'd only just met and she had so many more things to ask. Like what the mighty cities of the world look like and if he had ever seen an ocean. An idea hit her and she leapt to her feet.

"Alright where are we heading?" She grinned mischievously.

"Uh, I wasn't planning on "we" heading anywhere. My business is personal and I don't think I should drag anyone else into it." Oddly enough, he found himself almost sad to refuse her like this. It had only been a short time, but she had made him smile, which was no small feat.

She just winked and replied, "Well just try and get rid of me. The gods have finally given me a chance to get out of this village. I won't bother you about your personal business, as long as you let me come along. Deal?" She offered a hand.

He took a step backwards, surprised again by her eagerness, but then stepped forwards and shook her hand with a half smile. "Deal. But what about your parents and friends?"

She waved a hand, dismissing the notion. "Ah they won't mind. Actually I suppose the villagers will be glad to see me go. They think I'm more trouble than I'm worth. And my grandfather's the only family I have here. He's always going off on crazy voyages into the desert for days at a time. He won't mind as long a I'm with someone."

The boy was glad that she could come. But why was he glad? He barely knew her. Oh well, no time to stop and ponder about emotions.

He stepped out and stared at the last glow of the sun after its long journey west. While the dark lasted, it was time to be on their way.

A/N: Wow I can't believe I picked this up again! I'm extremely sorry for taking a HUGE vacation like that, but after clicking the link to my fics on accident today (I was roaming my "favorites" list) I just had to write again. I'll try very hard to keep these chapters coming. The thing is, I only have a vague idea of what I'm writing, the story is mostly writing itself. Since this is so, if the story won't write then there's nothing I can do. This chapter might have been worse than the others since I probably lost my edge over my vacation.

Well as always, feel free to ask questions in your reviews and I'll answer them in the next chapter. I know a few of you said you'd like me to continue Trials of S. T. and believe me, I'm not leaving that fic for dead yet. I think I can write another chapter for it soon.

Well I hope all my readers haven't forgotten me, although it's understandable if they have! Please leave me a review! Reviews always give me more incentive to write!^_^
