InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ Birthday Wishes ❯ One-Shot
by Leloi
Kagome awoke, blinking up at the patterns of light on the ceiling. Something nagged at the back of her mind… the day had some sort of importance. "My birthday." Hopping out of bed and dressing hastily, she left the room and raced down the hallway to another room. Knocking on the door rather briefly she opened it to flick on the light. "Inuyasha, wake up!"
The hanyou groaned from his futon, managing to move one leg. Around him lay testaments of the past year he had spent living with the Higurashis. After the completion of the jewel, Kagome had offered him a home… and he had accepted. Finally managing to roll over and knocking Tetsusaiga across the floor, he blinked up at the one who disturbed his sleep. "I thought you weren't a morning person." Inuyasha yawned, resting against the pillows.
Kagome waved his comment aside, sitting down on the floor near his futon. "Today is special. Why are you so tired?"
With a deep breath, Inuyasha rubbed the sleep from his eyes and nervously glanced down to make sure his boxers were on straight. "Your grandfather had me cleaning all night. I just went to bed a few hours ago." A part of his adoption by the Higurashis had been his integration with their shrine life. Grandfather had found him to be a good night worker and often gave him tasks to do before dawn. During the day the hanyou stayed away from the people that visited the shrine, not wanting to draw attention to his appearance.
"Well… Today is our birthday." Kagome smiled at him.
A few years before they had had a discussion on birthdays.
"When is your birthday, Inuyasha?"
"I don't have one."
"Everyone has one."
"I don't remember then."
"How about the day I woke you? That was my birthday. We can share it."
"If you say so…"
Inuyasha sat, staring at the box Kagome handed him, thinking on the past. "How long has it been?"
"Three years." Kagome smiled at him. "Open it!"
The hanyou opened, his claws sinking into the wrapping paper and cardboard. His hand closed on something, pulling out a picture frame. "It's… you." A smile crossed his face as he stared at her portrait. "Thanks." Setting it down beside the futon, he crumpled up the wrappings and blinked at her. "I'm sorry… I forgot about today. It's been busy around here…"
"That's alright." Kagome smiled.
Inuyasha drew his bare legs up against his chest, staring at her for a long time. "How is… school?"
"It's fine. I'll be graduating soon."
"And then you have the summer off to…"
"How are you?" Kagome interrupted him, looking a bit concerned. Since he had joined the household, they never really got to talk anymore. There was always someone else around to listen to them. Her days were filled with school while he slept. There were very few waking hours left to be together.
"I'm… ok." Inuyasha answered, stretching out his legs.
"You don't sound ok."
"I'm just… busy protecting this place. You'd be surprised how many demons are still around, wanting that jewel."
"It's gotten smaller." Kagome breathed, touching her throat where it hung against her skin.
"Kagome?"
Her eyes fell on him, staring deep into his own eyes. "Hm?"
"You can give it to me… I'll get rid of it for you. Then you won't have to worry about it."
Kagome shook her head, letting out a small laugh. "I think my family would be a little worried about a full blooded youkai living here."
Inuyasha looked away, his eyes showing a hint of pain. "That's not what I meant."
Kagome touched the place where the Shikon no Tama lay against her skin. "I don't…"
"I'm tired of living like this. I'm accepted by your family but not by your city."
"Are you… serious?"
"I've been here, what… about a year now. I can't go outside because someone might see me. The well stopped working so I can't go back even if I wanted to. If I became human… or at least looked human…"
Kagome took off her necklace, unstringing the single item it held. Her hand offered the small, shining gem to him. Hesitantly he took it, closing his eyes before opening his mouth and tossing it in. For a moment he held his breath and Kagome watched its aura slide down his throat to his heart.
His whole body shivered and he doubled over, moaning in pain.
"Inuyasha!" Kagome cried, touching his shoulder. White hair turned gray and then black as dog ears slid down his skull.
Inuyasha's body contorted back and for a moment he lay panting on the futon. The young miko watched as the last of the jewel's aura disappeared. "Did it… work?" His voice was hesitant, as if he feared the answer.
"You look human."
"I don't feel human. All my senses are the same." His eyes opened and he blinked at her. They were dark blue. His tongue thoughtfully explored his still present canines.
"But that's what you wanted, right? To look human? You do."
"I can go outside now?" Quickly he sat up and gazed longingly to the door. "Right? I can go outside during the daytime?"
"Yes. You want to go with me now? My friends want me to go to lunch with them. I'd like for you to come too."
Getting to his feet, he took a few steps towards the door. "Isn't it a little early for lunch?"
"First we're going to a movie… then lunch." Kagome answered, watching him.
"I'd like to go."

"Who is this?" Nanami asked, smiling at the longhaired boy in jeans and a tee shirt.
"This is my friend, Inuyasha." Kagome replied, pushing the human looking hanyou out from behind her. "Inuyasha, this is Nanami and Umiko."
Inuyasha made no reply except to stare down at the girls in disbelief.
"Inuyasha is shy." Kagome explained.
"It's alright, Inuyasha. We don't bite." Umiko smiled.
"Hard." Nanami added under her breath. "Houjou will be meeting us at the theater."
"Houjou…" Inuyasha echoed, glaring at the ground as if it had offended him.
"The movie doesn't start for a while… maybe we could go shopping…" Kagome quickly took Inuyasha's arm and led him away from the shrine with her two friends following.
"Anything you want, Kagome. It's your birthday." Her friends giggled.

Inuyasha sat on the lip of the fountain, watching as the three girls went from store to store. Never caring much for crowds, he preferred the relative tranquility the fountain offered, despite the fact that the water reeked of chlorine. His eyes fell on Kagome emerging from another store with her friends before waving to him and entering another store. The hanyou waved back.
Something gnawed at the back of his mind. Houjou was supposed to come. Inuyasha knew of the other male from when Kagome went out with him. The dates always bothered him, but he always kept quiet about it. Who was he to deny Kagome her happiness, especially now that the quest was over? Besides, he often followed to make sure she was kept safe. Many a night was spent getting rid of the demons that thought Kagome was out on her own and unprotected.
Standing, Inuyasha made his way to one of the stores the girls had left. Inside there was a large collection of jewelry. Gaping at all the shiny stones and metal, he didn't know where to look first.
"Can I help you?" A saleslady moved towards him.
"Those three girls that were in here… what were they looking at?" Inuyasha finally found his voice.
A short while later the hanyou left the store with a small paper bag and less money in his pocket. Kagome's grandfather paid him, but he never had cause to use it until now. His eyes settled on the three girls and a boy. Self-consciously the bag was shoved into his pocket as he approached them.
"Where were you?" Kagome asked, reaching out to catch Inuyasha's hand as he neared the group.
"Looking at something." Inuyasha answered, staring at Houjou.
Houjou stared back at him with an unreadable expression on his face.
^.~
"I had a great time." Houjou beamed at Kagome. "Thanks for inviting me."
"It was our pleasure, Houjou-kun." Nanami answered.
"May I… talk to you alone?" Houjou asked, offering Kagome his arm.
Kagome looked around at her friends before nodding and taking Houjou's arm. "What is it?"
A few minutes later, Kagome returned, rather red. Catching Inuyasha's arm, she pulled him with her towards the shrine. "Bye everyone!"
"Did you do it?" Nanami turned to regard a rather pleased looking Houjou.
"Yeah." The young man replied.
"What was her reaction?" Umiko asked.
"She told me she'll give me an answer tomorrow." Houjou whispered, following Kagome's departure with his eyes.

"Happy birthday!" Mrs. Higurashi beamed as she placed a cake on the table before Kagome and Inuyasha.
"What do I do?" The hanyou whispered to Kagome.
"Make a wish and help me blow out the candles."
The hanyou obeyed… and nearly blew the cake off the table.
"Not so hard, Inuyasha, dear." Mrs. Higurashi laughed, retrieving the cake to cut it up.
"How did you enjoy your first day being human?" Grandpa turned to the hanyou.
"I just LOOK human. It was fine. We went shopping… saw a movie… ate lunch…" Inuyasha's voice trailed off.
Kagome glanced nervously around the table. "Um… Mama? Grandpa? Inuyasha…?"
The table stared at her expectantly.
"Houjou asked me to marry him."
"Wow, sis…" Souta remarked.
Mrs. Higurashi and Grandpa both looked to Inuyasha. Inuyasha sat, staring at the table with a confused look on his face. "And… what did you say?" Grandpa finally spoke up, still staring at the hanyou.
"I told him… I would give him an answer tomorrow." Kagome whispered, not daring to look up from the table.
"I'm… not hungry. Good night. Grandpa, I'll go get ready for tonight." Abruptly Inuyasha stood, and left the table.
"That's not necessary, Inuyasha." Grandpa called after the retreating hanyou.
Everyone else was left in silence at the table. Mrs. Higurashi put cake in front of unresponsive people. "Perhaps, Kagome… you should go speak to Inuyasha."
Kagome nodded absently and stood, making her way back up the stairs to Inuyasha's room. Lightly she knocked at the door. There was no answer. "Inuyasha, please. May I come in?"
"It's your house." Inuyasha answered from the other side of the door.
Kagome stepped in and stared at the half naked hanyou. His shirt was off and he was tying back his hair. "Inuyasha…"
Reaching down to pick up a white kimono, he didn't seem to hear her.
"It's just that… you never tell me what you want anymore."
"What I want? Does it matter what I want?" Inuyasha shot back, pulling off his pants and reaching for his shrine hakama.
"Of course it matters. All I want is for you to be happy. When you… chose Kikyou… I tried to be happy because I knew it was what you wanted." Kagome swallowed nervously.
"What I wanted was to set her soul free. You KNOW that now, don't you? I couldn't let Naraku destroy her again." Shaking his head, he tied everything in place. "After Naraku was defeated, I came home with you, didn't I? I didn't stay in the time I knew. I chose to stay with you."
"But… I don't understand why. I know you loved her and yet…" Shaking her head, Kagome looked away.
"Because I… my future is with you. Look, I've been trying to fit in here. Your grandfather seems to think I'm cut out to be a shrine priest. Maybe he's right. And now I can pass for human so I can see daylight again. I've missed daylight." Inuyasha picked up his discarded clothes and put them in a hamper. Pausing, he felt the pocket of his jeans. A small paper bag was pulled out. "I almost forgot… happy birthday." Turning, he handed her the paper bag.
Kagome stared at in curiosity. "What is it?"
"Open it."
Kagome obeyed, pulling a small box out of the bag and opening the lid. "It's… that necklace I was looking at. How did you know…?"
"I asked the woman. I thought you would like it."
Lifting the necklace out of the box, Kagome stared at the simple chain with the diamond pendant. "It reminded me of the Shikon no Tama." Quickly she put it on. "How does it look?"
Inuyasha stared at her throat and nodded. For a moment he stood there, not making any other movement. Finally his eyes misted over and he looked away.
"What is it?" Kagome stepped closer and lightly touched his arm.
"If you want to marry Houjou… I won't stop you."
"Do you want me to marry Houjou?"
"No."
"Then what do you want?"
"I want… what you want."
Gently she wrapped her arms around him and leaned against his chest. Something seemed to snap in his mind and immediately his arms encircled her body, drawing her closer as his lips and nose nuzzled against her neck. "Inuyasha…" Her breath was cut short with a gasp, feeling his breath against her throat.
His fingers found a way under her blouse, eagerly stretching out to touch warm bare skin. Without warning her, his legs folded, bringing them both down on the futon. Fingertips brushed her cheek as blue eyes studied brown. Slowly his eyes slid shut as his face drew closer to hers. Lips lightly touched and he pulled away quickly as if he expected her to hit him. Instead her lips closed the distance between them, taking back his lips.
For a long time she pressed against him, doing no more that resting her lips against his. Finally they pulled away and he stared at her in silence. His arms still cradled her against him. "Inuyasha…" Her head rested against his shoulder as her fingers idly played with his kimono collar.
"You should go to bed." His words were soft and raw, filled with an unexpressed sadness and acceptance. "I have work to do."
"It's still early." Kagome answered, still playing with his collar. Her body felt warm and safe in his lap. Her fingertips slid across the silky material, lightly touching skin.
Inuyasha's hand caught hers, keeping it pinned against him so it could do no more exploring. And yet it pressed her fingers against his sternum so she could feel his rapidly beating heart. "It's not right…"
"What's not right?"
"What we're doing. If you're going to marry him, I can't…" His voice gave out and instead he shook his head helplessly.
"You can't what?"
Blue eyes stared at her, willing her to know the answer without words. For a moment his eyes wavered before closing and then lips were against hers, tasting her hungrily. Hands shifted against her back as he lay back, pulling her on top of him. Inuyasha grunted and tried to shift himself a bit so her weight covered him in places he most craved. His fingers worked their way from the top of her scalp to as far down as his hands could reach and back up again, catching on the hem of her skirt. His tongue tasted the inside of her mouth as his fingers slowly followed her thighs up to her ass.
"Mm…" Arms wrapped around his shoulders as Kagome's legs straddled his. Briefly her lips pulled away as her eyes focused on his. Then after a breathless moment, her lips reclaimed his.
His fingers trailed against her inner thighs, seeking out the heat he could feel through his pants. They paused against the juncture of her legs, lightly stroking through the fabric.
Kagome squealed and sat up, staring down at the concern etched on his face. With a deep breath she tugged at the bottom of her blouse, pulling it over her head and tossing it away. Her bra soon followed and she stared down at him, bare-chested.
Inuyasha stared up at her in curiosity. Reaching out, his hands explored her soft, round breasts, cupping them almost playfully. They fit perfectly in his hands and he gave each a gentle squeeze. Glancing down at her hands on his kimono, he watched as she pulled and tugged at the fabric, trying to undress him. With a smile his hands released her and undid the knot for his hakama, allowing everything to be loose.
Almost eagerly, the young woman pulled open his clothes, seeking skin. Pants and boxers were pulled down as kimono was opened. Her eyes widened on his perfectly formed body.
"Kagome?" His voice drew her eyes back up to his face. No blush was evident on his cheeks. The hanyou seemed calm and unembarrassed at his state of dress. Kagome, on the other hand, was bright red.
"Yes?"
"You don't have to do this." Inuyasha whispered. "I understand if…"
Wordlessly Kagome shook her head and moved to remove the last of her clothes. Quickly she sat back down on him, as if afraid he would get up and leave without her weight on top of him.
His hands reached out to pull her down so once again her body was sprawled against his. "You don't know… how many times I… wanted to…" His words gave up and instead his face rubbed against her shoulder, feeling the pendant tap against his own neck. "I was afraid." His body froze beneath hers, holding her close. "I was afraid you would be disgusted… because I'm not human. I'm still… not human."
"You are Inuyasha. I don't care what you are besides the fact that you are you." Kagome whispered, gently kissing his cheek. Her fingertips lightly touched one of his ears. "I'll miss the dog ears." Her other hand reached down between them, touching his manhood.
Inuyasha closed his eyes and let out a soft grunt in surprise. No one ever touched him there… like that. It felt good. Unconsciously his hips pushed against her hand, wanting more contact. Something warm and wet enveloped him and he bit his lip, feeling the tightness slowly surround him.
"Does it hurt?" Her breath was hot against his ear.
Quickly he shook his head and helplessly rested his hands on her shoulders, feeling the warmth engulf him further as he fought the urge to push up into it. His eyes stayed shut as he concentrated instead on her scent. It was sharpening with each push against him. The scent surrounded him, making his senses swim with their wonderful scent. Finally he could take no more and pushed up all at once.
Kagome gave a startled cry and clutched at him, breathing heavily.
Inuyasha opened his eyes, looking into her pained eyes. "I'm… sorry."
"Just give me a moment." Kagome breathed, resting against him.
His eyes slid down her side, staring at where her naked thigh rested against his. It was fascinating to him how her body could be so close to his. So engrossed was he, that he didn't even realize that she was moving her hips against his until he saw her leg clench. His eyes returned to her face. "I hurt you?"
"Only a little bit." Kagome answered, closing her eyes as she let her body writhe against his.
The hanyou shut his eyes and surrendered himself to her movements, feeling her body rub deliciously against him. His body felt like it was being consumed… and he didn't mind one bit.
A few breathless moments later, they picked up speed and they both pushed against each other, straining to fill their collective need for completion. Kagome went limp first, her body bowing down against his chest as she gasped for air. Inuyasha watched the look on her face before he too felt his body give one final push against her. For a long time they lay, breathing hard and holding the moment for as long as they could.

Kagome awoke, pulling her aching body up, looking around the unfamiliar room. Beside her on the futon, Inuyasha lay, snoring softly. Easing back down beside him, her hand lightly touched his cheek. "I know my answer to Houjou. I've always known."
The hanyou mumbled in his sleep, curling up into ball.
"Just… stay with me, OK?" Her arm wrapped around him as she snuggled against his back. "I love you." Closing her eyes, she drifted back into sleep.
