InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ Birthday Wishes ❯ surprise! part one ( Chapter 3 )
Softly filtered morning sun gently woke Kagome from her dreams. Yawning, she crawled out of bed and stretched, disturbing Buyo at the foot of her bed. "Good morning, Buyo! Sorry, did I interrupt His Majesty's slumber?", Kagome giggled. She patted her cat on the head before making her way towards the bathroom. Already seeing the light was on and hearing the water running, Kagome tapped her foot in annoyance. "C'mon, Sota! Hurry up in there!" The tap turned off and out came a grinning Sota. "Sorry sis… no more hot water!", he laughed, and zipped down the stairs. "Why…. You!!", Kagome sputtered. Counting to ten and sighing, she resigned herself to a cold shower. Shivering in the frigid water, Kagome washed her hair and hopped out. Wrapping herself in a warm fluffy towel, she walked to her room to get dressed. Before she could glance into her closet, something on her bed caught her attention. Nestled next to Buyo was a beautifully wrapped box. Curious, Kagome lifted the box and read the tag. * To Kagome, from Sota. Happy Birthday, Sis! *
`Birthday?!? Since when is it my birthday?', Kagome thought. Digging in her nightstand drawer for her calendar, Kagome flipped to July. There, circled in bright red ink, was today's date, July 27. Kagome nearly sweat-dropped. `It is my birthday! How could I have forgotten? Oh yea… spending most of my time in the Feudal Era, that's how.' Looking down to the box in her lap, Kagome undid the bow and gently unwrapped the delicate paper. Opening the package, Kagome gasped. Inside, she found a pair of silver chandelier earrings with dainty pink crystals. Placed underneath the earrings was a necklace, also in silver and pink. Kagome lifted the delicate jewelry and admired it before putting it on, then took the stairs two at a time to thank her younger brother. Before she could find him, however, her grandfather called her into the living room. "Come here, child! I have something for you!" There, in the middle of the floor, sat a brand new bicycle in a brilliant blue next to which was a new backpack, stocked with supplies she needed for her trips. Gramps and Sota stood next to the gifts, grinning proudly at their color compromise. "Oh, thank you both! They're lovely!" Kagome said thankfully. She kissed and hugged her jii-chan, then thanked her brother for the jewelry. "Would anyone care to join me? I have cake!" called a voice from the kitchen. Kagome's mother stood beaming over her homemade birthday cake, wiping the flour from her apron. Kagome giggled and wiped more flour from her mother's cheek before giving her a big hug. "Thanks so much, mom! Thank you everyone! This is the best birthday ever!" Kagome sniffled. She decided to omit the fact that she hadn't even remembered her own birthday, but was delighted that her family didn't. Still hugging her mother, she smiled and whispered, "Thanks for the jewelry, too, Mom." Her mother smiled knowingly, and whispered, "I only bought the necklace, Kagome. Your brother has been saving for some time to buy you those earrings!" Grinning, she let go of her mother and looked over to Sota, who was salivating over the un-cut cake. Ruffling his hair, Kagome made her wish and blew out her candles. She then gave her brother the first piece of cake.
Kagome's mother was washing the dishes when she heard a rustling outside of the window. "Come in and have some cake, Inuyasha! There's still plenty of it left." She barely had time to cut him a piece before it was devoured. Through his mouthful of cake, Inuyasha uttered something resembling "Thank you". "You're welcome", her mother laughed. "Kagome's in the living room. Be sure to wish her a happy birthday!"
"Keh", Inuyasha huffed, wiping his mouth on his sleeve. "So the wench is another year older. Big deal." When her mother had rolled her eyes and returned to the dishes, Inuyasha grinned to himself. `Oh, I won't have to wish her a happy birthday", he thought. `She'll have a very happy birthday indeed.'
Finding Kagome stretched out on the couch, he stood in front of the TV and frowned. "Shouldn't you be getting ready to come back?" he barked "Why is it that I always have to come and get you going? I'd probably die of a heart attack if you were actually ready for once." Kagome sighed and motioned towards her awaiting pack and bike. "See? I am ready! And take it easy, Inuyasha. You're dragging me away from my family on my birthday. The least you could do is be a bit nicer." Inuyasha grumbled and set the bike on his shoulders. "Yea yea…. Can we go now? The others are waiting." Kagome rolled her eyes, then conceded and grabbed her pack. After saying her goodbyes to her family, the young miko headed to the well.
On the other side of the well, a small group was huddled under its ledges. "Do you think they'll be back soon?" whispered the small demon. Miroku shrugged and listened for voices in the well. He was about to reply to the kitsune, but was shushed by Sango. Her finely honed senses had picked up movement in the well. "They're back!", she said in a low whisper.
"Geez, Kagome! What do you have in this thing??" Inuyasha griped. He lugged the heavy backpack from the ground to the top of the well. "Look, if I can carry it, it shouldn't be a problem for you!" Kagome replied from in the well. "Now, can you help me out of here, please?" Grumbling, Inuyasha jumped to the bottom and helped Kagome onto his back. Leaping back to the well ledge, he purposely set Kagome down on the opposite side of their friends. `Good thing I have sensitive hearing, guys', he thought. `Luckily Kagome didn't hear your whispering or else the surprise would've been ruined!' Another trip to the bottom of the well produced Kagome's bike, which she was about to hop on and ride to the village, until she heard giggling behind her. Turning to the hanyou, Kagome gaped at him. "Inuyasha, was that a giggle I just heard come from you?"
"Hell no, it wasn't me!" The look he gave her told her he thought she'd obviously gone insane. Another stifled giggle came from out of nowhere. Suddenly, two humans and a demon popped out from behind the well. "Surprise! Happy birthday, Kagome!" She stared at her friends in shock; unable to comprehend how they knew it was her birthday.
"How…. What…", she stammered, a look of utter confusion on her face. "Here, Kagome! I got these for you!" Shippo presented her with a beautiful bouquet of wild flowers, rousing her from her shocked state. "Miroku helped me pick them! And…. Oh yea! These are for you too!" He fished around in his pockets for a second, then proudly held out two tiny handfuls of shells and stones. "Oh Shippo, they're wonderful! Thank you!" Kagome hugged the small fox demon and patted him on the head.
"You just couldn't wait, could you, Shippo?", the monk laughed. "Your other gifts await you at Kaede's, Kagome", Miroku stated. "Great!", Kagome replied. "Let's hurry, because this cake is probably going to leak through my bag anytime now!"
"Cake!!" Shippo squealed excitedly. Jumping onto Kagome's handlebars, the kitsune happily hopped up and down. Laughing, the others quickly made their way to Kaede's.
`Well, this certainly is a pleasant turn of events.' Kagome thought. `Everyone remembered my birthday, even when I didn't.' At that, Kagome smiled, but that smile faded as another thought crossed her mind. `Yea… everyone remembered… except Inuyasha.'
