A/N: Finally getting around to the disclaimer! I don't own any part of InuYasha, but if I did, I think I know which part I'd want. ::grins evilly::
Kagome relaxed and sat cross-legged on the floor of Kaede's hut, encircled by Sango and the others. The group had arrived at sunset, just as Kaede was finishing the final touches on Kagome's birthday dinner. The meal had passed pleasantly enough, with Inuyasha muttering only a few mild threats on a certain fox demon's life. Apparently, Shippo had whispered something to him and he wasn't happy to hear it. Hearing Inuyasha growling low in his throat, Kagome had separated the two “children” and was setting about serving her friends the cake she had brought with her from her time. Shippo had gotten a little candy rosebud on his piece, and was instantly enthralled with the sugary confection. The others were equally impressed with the fancy icing and the words `Happy Birthday Kagome' written on the top.
“How does the cake know it's your birthday, Kagome?”, Shippo asked. Kagome giggled and handed him another piece. She was about to explain the tradition of birthday cakes, but Shippo had long since lost interest in his question. By now, the little demon had already shoved his second piece (and half of Miroku's, much to the monk's chagrin) into his mouth.
“Oh, I almost forgot! We have more gifts for you, Kagome.”, Sango said cheerfully. Setting aside her cake, Sango reached over towards her basket of personal belongings. Pulling out the bone hair combs, she set them gently in Kagome's hands.
“Oh Sango…” Kagome breathed. She gingerly fingered the combs in her hands, delighting in the intricate hand-painted flowers and the beautifully carved bone. “They're breathtaking! Are you sure you want to give them away?” Sango smiled, but Kagome didn't miss the tear trail down her friend's cheek.
“Sango?” The young demon slayer turned her eyes away from Kagome's questioning glance. “Oh, it's nothing, Kagome.” Shifting her gaze to star out the window at the fading sunset, Sango smiled softly. “ I'm just so happy to see them go to someone who can actually use them! They were given to me by a boy in my village, and……” she trailed off, closing her eyes to the new tears that were forming. Kagome wasted no time in hurrying to kneel beside her friend. “Sango, you mustn't give these to me. They're beautiful, but they're yours.” Kagome opened her friend's hand, only to have Sango fist it closed. “No, Kagome. I wish that you would take them. They would look lovely on you, and I have no need of them. Please wear them for me?” Kagome's eyes teared as well, and she hugged the exterminator.
The girls were interrupted as Miroku cleared his throat. “I believe that it is my turn to bestow a gift upon Kagome.” Folded in his outstretched arms was a stunning blood red silk kimono and a pair of matching silk slippers, both embroidered with a black lotus design. Inuyasha stared at the gift, his growl so low it was undetected by human ears. Unfortunately, not everyone in the hut had human ears. Kirara's ears twitched and Shippo's gaze fell on the hanyou, watching him tense in irritation. Inuyasha's growl intensified as he watched Kagome give Miroku a peck on the cheek.
Rising from his spot on the floor, Inuyasha folded his arms across his chest and pinned Miroku with a withering glare. “Just who do you think you're fooling, monk?”, Inuyasha snarled. “Did you actually pay for those things?”. Miroku plastered a sheepish grin on his face, then sighed. “I was going to, honest! I saw a merchant drop them from his cart, and I hurried after him to give them back, but he was already gone.”
“Keh!”, Inuyasha snorted. “Yea, right. More like you `liberated' them from the merchant and figured we wouldn't catch on.” Kagome's confusion was evident in her expression, but was quickly replaced with mild shock and a look of recognition settled in her eyes. “Miroku, how could you? You mean to tell me you stole to get my gifts??” Miroku cringed at the accusing glares of Sango and Kagome and opened his mouth to defend himself, but thought better of it and sighed. “Forgive me, Kagome-sama.” Turning to the silver-haired hanyou, he said, “You're right, Inuyasha. I just wanted to get Kagome something special for her birthday. Shippo, Sango and you already had such lovely things planned, and I…” The monk's hand flew to cover his mouth; his eyes widened in shock. Mentally cursing himself, he chanced a glance over towards Inuyasha. His silver hair covered his eyes, making it impossible to judge his temper. A sudden movement caught the monk's attention, and he settled his gaze on Inuyasha's hand. Flexing his claws menacingly, Inuyasha softly chuckled. Beads of nervous sweat gathered on Miroku's temples, and he held his breath, waiting for the hanyou to say something.
Instead, Inuyasha took a few steps forward and stopped, seemingly contemplating something. “I'll have to kill you later, monk. Since you ruined the surprise, I'll just have to give Kagome her present now.”
A/N: Ohh…. Umm…… did I promise that lemon? Yea. Well, next chap! I'm having MAJOR writer's block, as you can see if you check the chapter entry dates! Lol! This is a lot harder than I thought it would be, and with my new job it's hard to even find time to write. Anyways, I'm writing the lemon as we speak so maybe I'll have the new chap up by tomorrow!
P.s.~ I really would like a few reviews for this chap, if not the whole story. Any comments and/or suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks!
