Bitter Winter
By: Sora Tenshi
The wind blew fiercely as Inuyasha walked into the freezing hut. Miroku, Sango and Kagome sat around the fire. Shippo and Kirara had already fallen asleep in the corner of the room. Inuyasha took a few steps forward and sat beside Kagome. “Did you find a clearing?” Kagome asked barely above a whisper. “No, there isn’t a clearing yet, the snow hasn’t completely melted yet.” Inuyasha replied as he looked down at his cut hands that had grown to become infected over the long winter. “Inuyasha are you going to be okay?” Kagome asked as she looked at his hands as well. “Ya, these little cuts wont stop me.” Inuyasha said coming out of his daze. “Okay, but still after we get out of here and back to Kaede’s hut I want you to come to my time. I have a first aid kit that will help your hands.” Kagome said as she turned back to the fire. “I don’t need it Kagome, I told you I will be fine.” Inuyasha tried to argue back, but once looking upon her hurt face he turned back to the fire. “It better not be any of that stuff that burns again.” He continued as he covered his hands with his shirt. “It wont I promise.” Kagome said with a slight smile.
“Kagome I fear that Sango may be getting a cold.” Miroku said in a whisper trying to not wake the now sleeping Sango on his shoulder. Kagome and Inuyasha turned to the sleeping Sango. At these times of their journey for the Shikon Jewel it was not very good to get sick. The winter was one of their worst they had to face. Only a couple of jewel shards were remaining and they were convinced they all could make it threw the winter and find them all. They had traveled most of the winter with no problems except for the cold and a little snow, but lately the wind had gotten harsher and the air colder. The snow had been falling twice as more then it had started off with. Making walking very hard. Of course Miroku, Sango and Shippo could all ride on Kirara, and Kagome could ride on Inuyasha, but in the air everything was slowed down. The wind would blow the opposite way and slow them down, plus the father up they were the colder it was. Flying wasn’t the best continence.
Kagome had ran out of supplies fast, she had hardly anything left. All that was left was a little anti-biotic and that wasn’t enough. That’s why they were on their way back to Kaede’s, to get Kagome back to her time, to get more things to help them. Kagome got up and walked over to Sango. Feeling her forehead Kagome realized that her head was burning up. Kagome gasped at how sick she probably was. “She is way to sick to have barely have gotten a cold now. She must have been hiding it.” Kagome said underneath her breath. “What?” Inuyasha whispered hearing every word with his hearing being so amazing. “She must have hidden her sickness as to not worry the rest of us and to keep going.” Kagome told Miroku who was confused about the whole ordeal.
Sango opened her eyes. Everything was blurry. A figure then appeared in front of her. “Who, what?” Sango questioned in confusion. “Shh,” Kagome hushed as she placed a wet cloth on Sango’s forehead. “Oh, Kagome, what are you doing?” Sango said in relief. “Your very sick, I’m just doing what anyone else would do, trying to get you better.” Kagome said with a smile. “Where’s Inuyasha and Miroku?” Sango questioned. “I told Miroku to go to sleep, he was very worried. I tried to get Inuyasha to go to sleep, but he said he was going to watch for demons, he’s outside.” Kagome said as she reached over for more hot water. Kagome had come up with the idea that they could get snow and put it in a bucket then melt it with the fire so that to have water and it seemed to be working very well.
“Won’t Inuyasha get cold?” Sango asked. “I don’t think so, he said that demons can handle the cold better than humans, so I think he will be okay.” Kagome replied. “How late is it?” Sango asked. “I think it’s at least midnight.” Kagome said. “You must be sleepy, why don’t you go to sleep.” Sango suggested. “I will be fine.” She continued. “It’s okay Sango, I’m not very sleepy.” Kagome replied. “Please Kagome, get some sleep, I would really want it. Please.” Sango pleaded. “If you want it Sango.” Kagome said sadly as she went to the other side of the room and laid down where she had made her bed. “Goodnight Sango.” Kagome whispered as she heard a faint “Goodnight Kagome” from Sango.
Inuyasha sat outside the hut looking in every direction. The coldness was starting to get to him. Inuyasha looked down at his hands and inspected his cuts. “They are getting worse by the days.” Inuyasha thought to himself. “We have only found three jewel shards since we started this winter. The jewel is almost done only two more shards left, and I have a feeling where they are.” Inuyasha continued to think to himself. Naraku had tried so many distractions for Inuyasha and everyone, but every time they had beaten everything, every time getting another jewel shard. Naraku was angry at the fact he only had two left, but his plan was different. His plan was to let Inuyasha collect all the jewel shards and then in the end kill him and collect the whole jewel. He had been planning this since day one, but was now starting to worry that the fight he had imagined to be so easy wasn’t going to be anymore.
Inuyasha barely had closed his eyes when he heard Shippo start to yell. “The sun is coming up and the snow is starting to melt!” Shippo screamed as he went inside the hut. Miroku opened his eyes from the wall he had fallen asleep on and Kagome sat up rubbing her eyes. Sango tried to get up, but felt so weak she could barely open her eyes. “Sango!” Miroku yelled as he went over to her. Inuyasha hearing the yelling monk ran inside. “What’s wrong?” Inuyasha questioned. “Sango, she’s gotten worse.” The worrying monk said as he picked up Sango’s head slightly. “Put her on Kirara, there’s a chance the snow my start again. We have to get a move on it now.” Inuyasha said as he looked at Kagome to start getting her things. Kagome recognizing this look went to her futon bed and starting collecting everything and putting it in her yellow backpack.
Miroku reached over and got Sango’s boomerang. “Kirara.” Miroku said to the now woken up two-tailed cat. Kirara then transformed into her demon form and Miroku put up Sango’s boomerang on top of her. Miroku then picked up Sango and put her on Kirara’s back. Kagome now done with packing followed as Miroku and Kirara walked outside the door of the hut. Inuyasha then walked into the hut and put out the fire and walked back out as well. Kagome put her backpack on Kirara and Shippo got on to her back as well as Miroku. Kagome then walked over to Inuyasha. Inuyasha then leaned over and Kagome jumped on his back. His hair rubbing on to her face. His sent making Kagome once again feel safe with his presence.
“Ready?” Inuyasha asked everyone. “Yes.” Kagome answered and Miroku nodded his head. They then started their adventure back to Kaede’s hut. And telling from how far they had started to travel it would take at least two days. They had to get as far as possible today, there was no telling how cold it was going to get that night, they could only hope for the best.
The sky once again started to darken, but this time because of nightfall. The sun started to set and Sango was getting worse. Miroku has been holding her tightly since they had left. Miroku never thought he could feel this worried about someone, but for Sango things were different, they always had been, he had always felt different for her, he knew he loved her, but it wasn’t completely his chose to tell her yet. He had to wait. Wait until the day things would be safe. The day that nothing wrong could happen and they could live happily without the grief of warfare going on. He had known that she had felt the same way for him, and he felt bad that he couldn’t tell her that he felt the same way, but once again it wasn’t completely his choice. It was the friends around him. They had to defeat Naraku before any good would come to them. To everyone. Miroku knew this from the very start.
They had set Camp Inuyasha was sitting in the tree above Kagome like he always had. Miroku sat next to Sango watching over her making sure she was doing good threw the night. All day she was asleep turning and tossing as if she were trapped in a nightmare. Kagome had done everything in her power to keep her healthy, but now all she could do was watch her poor friend. All she could do was try to get to the village faster. Kagome couldn’t stand it. She couldn’t fall asleep she wasn’t sleepy, she had to much on her mind to be able to just close her eyes and go to sleep dreaming when in reality she was in a nightmare where her friend could die at any minute a demon showed up, or they could freeze to death. She couldn’t stand it. Kagome sat up in her futon bed. Inuyasha hearing the movement watched as Kagome sat up and got out of her bed and started to walk. He wondered where Kagome was walking.
Kagome looked at all the trees holding out her hand and letting it pass threw the bushes and branches. “I can’t do anything. All I can do is watch and wait. We have to get to the village soon.” Kagome said as she continued to hold out her hand. “Kagome?” Said a voice from behind her. Kagome stood still shocked and scared. Slowly Kagome turned around. “Oh, Inuyasha! Don’t do that!” Kagome yelled at him. “Oh, sorry next time I will come up and grab you by the shoulder would that be better?” Inuyasha replied sarcastically. “What are you doing here anyway Inuyasha?” Kagome asked as she took another step closer to him. “I saw you get up, and there are demons out here!” Inuyasha yelled at her. “Oh, sorry.” Kagome replied. “I just had a lot of stuff on my mind.” Kagome continued. Inuyasha just stood there. What was he supposed to say to that. He didn’t know.
“You know Inuyasha, when I first came here it was weird, I was so scared. I didn’t know anyone, you I trusted you first, but you were the first to try to kill me. Kind of funny huh.” Kagome said with a little laugh. “But that was before I knew you, I just cared about the jewel then.” Inuyasha said. “Ya, but still I even then stayed by you. You were the first person I ever trusted here. You protected me, you were always there for me. Well except for the times I was down because of you.” Kagome said sadly. “I don’t know why I’m telling you this to tell you the truth. I guess it’s been on my mind for a while. I guess this is on my mind because I don’t know what I’m going to do when the jewel is completed.” Kagome said as she took a step back.
“I want to ask you something Inuyasha. Can I?” Kagome hesitated. “What?” Inuyasha questioned. “After the jewel is completed can I stay here, with you?” Kagome asked. Inuyasha stood there shocked. “She wants to stay with me forever?” Inuyasha thought to himself. “You want to stay? What about your friends at home and your family and that Houjo guy?” Inuyasha asked. “Inuyasha don’t you understand. You’re the first person who I trusted with my life, you’re the first person who let me know them for who they were. Inuyasha you’re the first person who actually cared. Yes my friends were worried about me, but they don’t do anything about it, you have always been there and you have done anything in your power every time I got hurt to try to make me better. The people at my home all they do is hope for me to get better. Inuyasha I want to stay with you because I love you.” Kagome said with tears coming out of her eyes.
Inuyasha took a step forward. “Why are you crying?” He asked. “I don’t know, but it feels good to get this all out.” Kagome said as she just stood there looking up into his golden eyes. “Of course you can stay here, Kagome, you never had to ask.” Inuyasha replied as he took her into a tight embrace. “And Kagome….I love you too. I have loved you since the first time I got to know you, when you actually cared if I died or not. You were the first person in my life I trusted as well. You were the first person who ever cried over me. You let out tears for me. I have always loved you Kagome.” Inuyasha said as he held her tighter. Kagome hugged him tighter as well she had never been happier in her life. She was so relived that he cared for her, she never wanted to leave. “Thank you Inuyasha.” Kagome whispered in his ear.
“Come on Miroku, we got to get to Kaede’s village.” Inuyasha said as he woke up the monk. “The sun hasn’t rose yet, but Sango’s temperature has shot up. We have to leave now.” Kagome said as she was already putting her yellow backpack on Kirara’s back and placing Shippo lightly on as well. “Okay.” Miroku replied as he picked up Sango and put her on Kirara then himself. They then started on their way to Kaede’s village.
Their feet hit the ground with a thump. “Kaede!” Kagome screamed as Miroku came out behind her with Sango in her arms. “What happened child?” Kaede questioned as she opened the door for Miroku to let Sango in. “Inuyasha come with me, I have to go get some medicine for Sango and I need to do something for your hands. Kaede we will be right back.” Kagome said as she pulled Inuyasha behind her. They ran to the well and jumped in fast. Kagome ran into her room and then to her bathroom. Tearing everything that was of no importance on the floor she had to find something and fast. “Kagome what’s wrong honey?” Kagome’s mother asked as she walked into her daughters room. “I need some medicine for my friend Sango and Inuyasha needs something for his hands.
Inuyasha stood there beside Kagome, Kagome’s mother looked down at Inuyasha’s hands. They were red and around the edges of the cuts they were turning almost black. She gasped in shock and went into her bathroom and pulled out some bandages and some anti-biotic and some medicine for Sango’s condition. “There you go Kagome.” Kagome’s mother said as she watch as her daughter and Inuyasha walked to the well shrine. “Come on Inuyasha.” Kagome said as she pulled him behind her. Once on the other side of the well Kagome ran with all her might to the hut Sango was residing in. “Here give Sango some of this.” Kagome said as she gave Kaede the medicine bottle. Kagome then walked over to Inuyasha and sat him down. “Here okay, this might hut just a little, but don’t get mad okay.” Kagome said as she reached out for his hand and put it in her own.
She opened it up, she couldn’t believe how bad it had gotten. Kagome got some tissue and put some anti-biotic on it. “Just a little okay.” Kagome repeated as she dabbed a little on his hands. Inuyasha squinted a little until she was completely done. “Okay done.” Kagome said as she smiled lightly. She then reached over and got out the bandages and raped them around his hands. “Don’t take this off okay, I will.” Kagome said as she got up and walked over to Sango. “How’s she doing?” Kagome asked with worry in her voice. “She’s better her temperature has gone down a little. She seems to have settled down a little more as well.” Kaede said as she put a wet cloth on Sango’s forehead. “Kagome do me a favor and go get more water please.” Kaede asked. “Sure.” Kagome replied as she walked outside the hut.
Without saying anything Inuyasha followed her to the stream that was near by. He watched as Kagome walked. “Was last night a dream?” He kept asking himself. “Does she really love me, did I tell her?” Inuyasha continued to think. “It all seems to unreal to be true.” He thought as he stopped when Kagome stopped at the stream. “I know your following me Inuyasha.” Kagome said as she bent down and filled the basket she had gotten from Kaede with water. Inuyasha stood there shocked but took a few steps closer and sat down on a rock next to her. “There’s demons out here you know.” Inuyasha said sarcastically. “I’ve never had to worry before, you always come in time.” Kagome said with a smile. “It’s something you get use to after a few years.” Kagome said with a laugh. “It’s nicer here you know. The airs cleaner and the sky is clearer. I’m glad I’m staying.” Kagome said as she started to walk back over to the hut. “It wasn’t a dream.” Inuyasha thought to himself as he let out a light smile.
Kagome and Inuyasha continued to walk, they then soon reached the hut where they found Sango sitting up. “Sango!” Kagome screamed as she went to hug her friend. “Do you feel better?” Kagome asked happily. “A lot.” Sango sighed as she took a drink of water. “Well still Sango get some sleep.” Kagome said as she let go of her friend and walked out the hut. “Kagome, where are ye going?” Kaede asked as she tended to some wounds Miroku had gotten over the winter. “I haven’t been able to walk in days the snow was so much thicker where we were at.” Kagome said as she walked down the pathway towards the stream again. “Does she want me to go?” Inuyasha thought to himself as he walked out the hut once again but this time jumping tree to tree. Kagome sat on the rock Inuyasha had once sat on a few moments before and looked at the little snow on the ground grabbing some in her hand and letting it slide threw her open figures.
“It’s been so nice here, I’m glad Inuyasha let me stay, but what am I going to do with the jewel, what is Inuyasha going to do with it?” Kagome said barely above a whisper. “She’s thinking about the jewel.” Inuyasha thought to himself as he watched her form a tree right above her. “What if Inuyasha still wants to become demon, he said I could stay and he told me he loved me, but he never said anything about the jewel and whether or not he would become full demon, human or if he wouldn’t use it all. I hope he doesn’t become either.” Kagome said as she let all the snow out of her hand completely. “I love him the way he is, he’s different on his human nights, and he’s really different when he turns demon. I fell in love with him as himself.” Kagome said as she kicked the snow and walked back to the village. “She likes me for who I am. She doesn’t want me to change.” Inuyasha commented as he sat in the tree looking up at the clouds reveling the sun for the first time in months.
“I have a feeling today the day.” Inuyasha smirked as he started to run to the village. He ran to the hut and busted in. “What the…” Kagome started but then stopped noticing it was Inuyasha. “What’s wrong Inuyasha?” Kaede asked worriedly. “I have a feeling Naraku is coming today.” Inuyasha said. “Me to, I have felt a evil presence coming towards us for a couple of hours now.” Miroku added as he stood up. Everyone turned as they heard someone else get up. “I’m coming to, I feel much better I can fight.” Sango said as she grabbed her boomerang. “We wont stop you, we all know you want to revenge your family.” Miroku said as he got his staff.
The sky suddenly got dark. A cloud started to appear. Miroku held himself in front of Sango as the winds blew harshly at them. Inuyasha did the same for Kagome. “Shippo stay inside with Kaede.” Inuyasha yelled as he knew already that the Kitsune would soon be coming. “Kirara!” Sango yelled as her cat came and stood beside her. “Ah, Inuyasha long time no see.” Naraku said with a evil grin. “Naraku, where is the last jewel shard? I know you have it!” Inuyasha yelled at him as he took his place standing beside Kagome, Miroku also standing beside Sango. “Oh, you mean this one?” Naraku said as he held out the last shard in his hand. Inuyasha’s face grew angrier with every word Naraku let out from his mouth.
“Naraku where is Kohaku?” Sango asked angrily. “Sango, the demon exterminator. Still searching for your brother I see. Kohaku was a weak little boy. Once I took out that jewel shard from his back he fell to the ground weakly.” Naraku said with a smile upon his face. Sango’s eyes started to form tears at the bottom. “How could you!” Sango screamed as she threw her boomerang at him. “Kagura!” Naraku said quickly. Kagura took out her fan and waved it easily enough to make the boomerang fly back towards Sango. Miroku jumped immediately at seeing this and pushed Sango out of the way just in time for both of them to be out of harms way, for now. “You bastard.” Inuyasha said his blood boiling.
Inuyasha unsheathed his Tetsuigea and started to run after Naraku. Naraku stood there with a evil grin while Kagura and Kanna got ready to attack. Inuyasha slashed at him as hard as he could. While Naraku and Inuyasha had a battle, so did Kagura, Kanna and Miroku, Sango and Kagome. Kagura stood there, none of them had attacked. They all just were standing around glaring at one another. “Our deal, you remember it don’t you?” Kagura asked the group of people standing before her. “You intend to keep don’t you?” Miroku said as he stood in front of the two girls. “Of Course. Kill Naraku, and my sister and I will finally be free. I wont attack of if you kill him.” Kagura said as she turned to Naraku. With that Kagura got out a feather and expanded it. Kagura and Kanna then left on it. “How dare she.” Naraku said as he watched them fly into the distance. “Naraku! Don’t take your eyes off me, you never know what could happen!” Inuyasha yelled as he pushed the Tetsuigea threw his back. “Uh…” Naraku said as the pain seeped throughout his body.
Naraku took a few steps forward and stood up completely straight again. Sango looked at his face once and anger filled her once again. She threw her boomerang once again this time making contact and slicing his arm. Miroku then went after Naraku hitting him with his staff making contact with his leg as it started to bleed. With the bit of strength left Naraku let out some miasma. The foggy like miasma filled the air. Kagome immediately, still not use to the posin, started to cough. “Kagome!” Inuyasha yelled as he ran over to her. “Inuyasha don’t worry about me, I have made it threw miasma once I can do it again. We have to kill Naraku. It’s more important then a little cough.” Kagome said as she stood up her eyes squinting trying to see a clear figure of Inuyasha. Inuyasha nodded in response and turned around and started to use his backlash wave. The wind started to form around the Tetsuigea and Inuyasha swung it over his hand and slammed it down as hard as he could. “Never Again!” Inuyasha yelled as he saw the horrid face Naraku had given off once he had seen Naraku’s face.
The dirt from the ground flew in the air. Inuyasha, Kagome, and Miroku and Sango all covered their eyes waiting to see If it was finally done. The air once again became clear and they saw a very injured Naraku on one knee. Naraku just kneeled there on one knee laughing as if he enjoyed the pain. His voice echoing throughout the area. Kagome stood wobbly on her feet and released the arrow she had readily had for attack. Naraku heard the light sound of the arrow flying in midair. He turned his head only to be met with a arrow aimed to his heart. A shriek was let out from Naraku but soon faded. The arrow started to deteriorate as did Naraku. Kagome fell to her knees still effected by the miasma that was still in her lungs. Inuyasha ran to her and held her in his arms keeping up her head. “You didn’t think I was just going to let him sit there and laugh did you.” Kagome joked as she smiled happily.
“I guess I’ll clean up.” Miroku said as he opened the beads to his hand and stood there in awe. “It’s gone.” Miroku said in joy. “The curse its been lifted.” He repeated and smiled at Sango who stood there sadly. “Kohaku.” Miroku thought as he walked over to her and stood before her. “I’m sorry Sango.” Miroku said sympathetically. “It’s okay. In a way I’m happy. Kohaku can finally live in peace. His soul is free to leave. It’s sad that he had to die, but I’m happy he is not being controlled anymore.” Sango said as she looked up at the sun. Miroku smiled lightly and put his arms around, embracing her. Sango blushed and smiled as she hugged him back. Kagome and Inuyasha watching the whole ordeal smiled and looked back at each other as if wishing that was them. Inuyasha feeling odd in the position of still holding Kagome started to help her up. “Thank you Inuyasha.” Kagome said as she leaned on him for support to walk. Kaede came out quickly and started to tend to all their wounds.
Months passed. Spring came and went as did summer. After healing from the miasma Kagome asked Inuyasha planed to do with the jewel. Inuyasha replied that if she wanted him to become human he would. He had no desire to become demon anymore. Kagome had simply replied that she liked him the way he was that she would never ask him to change. Inuyasha had smiled that day, the way he had never had before. He felt as if he belonged in the world and was put there for a purpose. Kagome was happy by Inuyasha’s answer and had made the decision to get rid of the jewel once and for all by wishing for it to be gone from the world.
After the Shikon No Tama being no more Kagome was free to live in the feudal era without having to be fighting all the time. She had returned to her time shortly to tell her family that she had made the decision to stay with her friends in the past. Her family had been saddened by this but knew that was her most desired wish. When Kagome had returned that day from her era Inuyasha had been waiting for her. He asked her that day if she would stay with him. Kagome had replied that she had said she would before why would anything change. Inuyasha had replied if she would stay with him to be his mate. Kagome had never been happier then at that moment.
Miroku hadn’t been happier. Naraku was finally dead and he was finally free to be with Sango. A month after the jewel was gone Miroku had finally asked Sango if she would marry him. Sango had replied happily with a yes. They then had there first child nine months later. It turned out to be twins, one boy one girl. They named them Fuko and Kohaku. As for Kagome and Inuyasha, after Miroku and Sango having twins they soon found out Kagome was too pregnant. She had one baby girl. She had her fathers ears and her mothers hair. They named her Sora.
