Chapter One: Dark Blessing

Blood fell down like rain from the sky, trickling down on everything. The crimson liquid pelted the stone fountain that had a spout carved on top in the form of a small and delicate maiden with her arms opened wide as though to embrace someone with long flowing hair and a loose kimono, tainting the once crystal clear water that came out of her spout a deadly red. Tears of blood seeped out of the stone statue's eye and rolled down her perfectly curved cheeks then dripped onto the ground, forming small puddles beneath it.

A young girl stood in front of the fountain, her black eyes quivering and her thin lips trembling. Her raven black hair was pulled back with a white ribbon and her bangs were a deep purple color that reached down to her chin and framed her pale face. Her kimono reached down to her knees was pure black with the exception on the silver sash that went around her waist.

She was all alone in front of the fountain that was crying blood tears in the darkness of the night as the crimson rain continued to fall down on her and the surroundings of the destroyed temple.

She clutched the fabric of her kimono with her fists, her eyes fixed on the fountain.

"Why?" she uttered the words quietly, almost afraid to speak out loud. The tone was filled with despair and utmost pain, as though she had suffered for an eternity. "Why?" She held back her own tears as her silent questioned turned into a loud scream. "WHY?" She dropped to her knees and held her face in her hands, shaking as tears then escaped her eyes. "Why…couldn't I die with them?" she sniffed hugging herself and kneeling over. Her very being was so delicate, as a child…she broke easily. Through her tears she looked up at the fountain, her vision was blurred by rage. "Why couldn't you kill me as well?" She paused, wanting an answer but getting none. She then said silently, "Don't I deserve to die with them at least?"

A beam of moonlight shone on her and a rose magically grew in front of her accompanied by a voice that she did not know, "Death…is that truly what you wish for?"

She extended a hand to the rose and touched one of the red petals with her fingers, immediately the rose withered with her touch making her withdraw her hand in surprise. Its petal curled up and turned black as the stem turned brittle, then in a second it turned into a pile of dust. A soft wind then picked up and carried the remnants of the rose in the breeze.

"The rose is the symbol of death…remember that."

Pain shoot through her body as she was suddenly paralyzed. A coldness took over her and made her so numb, so dead inside. She felt as though she was suffocating on the darkness that had surrounded her, encasing her. Never had she felt so helpless as she did now, she wanted to scream, but no sound came out.

"Death, such a thing is so beautiful. But it is not your time yet, you must wait…"

The death grip then released her.

She held her throat as she coughed up a vat of blood, the taste lingering in her mouth as she tried to spit it out.

She bit her bottom lip as she felt tears well up again.

She was all alone now.

Her eyes snapped open as she woke up from the dream drenched in her own sweat. She wiped the small beads of sweat off of her forehead with her hand as she heart raced. "It was just a dream…" she said reassuringly, trying to clam herself. "Just a dream, nothing more than that." Her breathing slowed down and she closed her eyes and took a few deep breathes before reopening them again.

She was alone in the room she had rented at the inn, sleeping on her back in the bed. The slide door was open to let the cool air into the room with a view of a small courtyard that had a petite garden full of flowers in it. The sweet aroma of the flowers had drifted into the room, making it much more comfortable and soothing.

Moonlit poured into the room, lighting up everything it touched and giving everything an ethereal look. Her pale skin was lit up in the light and appeared to be pure snow white and her eyes that were black resembled a dark silver shade.

She sighed as she sat up, one hand holding her head, her elbow resting on her knee.

"Damn it," she cursed in a hushed voice. The brushed her purple bangs out of her face and tucked them behind her ears carefully, "Damn all of it to hell." she spat venomously throwing the blanket off of her in frustration. "Always…it's always the same dream. Like I'm living in some nightmare…a nightmare I can't wake up from."

Nightmare was the keyword here, her past was the nightmare. The thing she wanted to forget about, the one thing she wanted to let go of and forget, but she couldn't. No matter how far she ran from it, it always haunted her dreams. Plagued her like some disease. It was inescapable. It was burned within her for all eternity and she hated it.

From the start it had been hell. Her parents never loved her, her brothers always beat her up and her grandparent's referred to her as a demon with the guise of a young human girl. All of the torture she had endured from them made her so fragile emotion wise, she never opened up to anyone afraid of being hurt again.

She would never forget the pain of her childhood and how much she wanted to kill herself, but when they were killed that night eight years ago…she had wanted to die with them. To be buried with them. Perhaps she wanted to die with them so she could finally be free from the world, but she honestly didn't know what had made her say that.

Love possibly?

No.

She didn't love them. She never did.

Hatred for herself?

Most likely.

Then again maybe anger.

It made no difference now, they were gone forever and no amount of sorrow or hatred would bring them back.

Ever since that fateful night though, she felt so empty inside. Like a piece of her had been ripped out of her painfully and over the time, the hole in her grew bigger and bigger. Nothing would fill it and time would not heal her scars.

It was all his fault anyway. That's what she told herself, it was always his fault. No blame was in her, all of it was on him. For what he did to her family and what he did to her when she was a child.

His name echoed in her head as she narrowed her eyes at the thought of him. He was despicable to the bone and that would never change.

She leaned back down, laying on her side. If it was really his fault, then why did she feel this way?

That question was unanswerable.

She would never have an answer for it and she didn't want one.

Her eyelids grew heavy with each passing second, until she couldn't keep them open anymore and she silently drifted into a rare peaceful slumber, letting the sounds of the night lull her.

The sunlight streamed into her room and she squinted her eyes, opening them only slightly to adjust her eyes to the brightness.

She stood up slowly and dressed.

Her attire was a long black kimono with a crimson ribbon to tie back her hair in a ponytail with three small gold hoop earrings in her right ear. A black choker was around her neck and bracelets adorned her wrists while she had fingerless black gloves on her hands with prayer beads wrapped around them. Black eye shadow was above her eyes giving her a dreary, depressed look. She was the perfect image of morbid beauty with a twinge of demoness to it.

Her footsteps were graceful as she left the inn to continue her wandering, she never had a particular destination though, she went wherever her heart desired and how far her feet would carry her. Sometimes she'd spend days out in a forest, enjoying the wonderful melody of nature, or sometimes she would stay in a small village for a while and teach the young children her knowledge of herbal medicines and healings. She enjoyed her freedom to go where she wished.

But now she had a destination or more of a goal you could say.

It was a goal shared by demons and same humans alike, a thing that binded the darkest craving within them all.

The Jewel Of Four Souls.

It wasn't too long ago that she acquired a shard and learned the tragic story behind it and how it would grant the most wanted wishes within ones heart. She knew what she wanted without having to think twice…to be rid of her curse that the demon had laid upon her. To break away from the chains that bound her to her past and become what she was before.

The village that the inn was located in was quiet, probably because she had woken up at the brink of dawn to leave. She didn't like to mingle with people, she found them annoying and simple minded most of the time.

Clouds passed overhead in the sky, occasionally blocking out the sun and casting a dark shadow over everything below. There was a gentle breeze in the early morning air and the orange and yellow leaves were falling off the trees and onto the ground. The grass beneath her rustled in the quick jets of sudden winds as though a snake was slithering it's way across it hastily. It was chilly for so early in the morning, but she didn't care. It was better than a storm in any case.

She stopped by a wide river with a slow current. The water streaming between rocks that were sticking out of the ground.

She kneeled down next to it and dipped her hands in the water then washed her face, she cherished how the cool water felt against her face. As she lowered her hands back into the water she stared at her reflection. A girl with big black soulless eyes stared right back at her an uneasy frown on her lips. She splashed the water to warp the image of her in it and turned away from the river and getting back on her feet. How she despised looking at herself, how she loathed what she was.

"Why don't you like your reflection?" a voice questioned, a familiar one too.

She turned her head towards where it had come from. Her eyes landed on man in a white fur with a baboon head shielding his face.

"You," she hissed glaring at him, her eyebrows twitching.

"Hello Setsuna," the malicious voice replied. "It's been awhile, hasn't it?"

A chill instantly went up her spine as she stared at him, "Eight years…" she said, her eyes unblinking, "And you have the nerve to show yourself to me after what you did." Her voice quaked with each word she said, as though the mere sight of him made her feel more fear then she had ever known in her entire life. She knew what he was capable of. She knew how pain he could cause her again and she didn't want that.

He smirked, but said nothing. In a moment he disappeared like he was never there.

"Naraku…" she whispered. "You have yet to see my fury."
