Return Home

Kagome woke up in the middle of the night. She only slept for a few hours a night anymore; it probably had something to do with her increased power. She finally comprehended where she was and looked down at the hanyou lying in her arms. She smiled as a memory crept into her mind. Inuyasha had looked like this before, he had looked helpless like a child only once before. It was on his human night and he was injured. Once again he had asked for her to stay with him, for her to hold him. Kagome tried to get up to stretch, but he would have none of it. Instead he wrapped his arms around her tighter and snuggled deeper into her embrace if that was at all possible. She shook her head in defeat as he mumbled something incoherent in his sleep. As long as he was sleeping soundly Kagome would stay there. She started running her fingers through his hair and almost giggled when he growled, actually he purred. A small smile caused his mouth to twitch and she sighed. There would be no more sleep for her tonight. Instead Kagome looked up at the stars. There was so much for her to think about. The past few months and the last couple of days had all been, well, an experience.

She had learned so much in such a short time. She was stronger than she ever imagined and she did it on her own. Proud didn’t even begin to describe how she felt. And who did she have to thank, the great and powerful Sesshomaru. She rolled her eyes at that thought. Yes, he is great and powerful, but at the same time he is something she never would have thought if she hadn’t seen it for herself. The TaiYoukai was kind and caring in his own way. He had revived her and helped her and trained her. He even gave her responsibilities that his mate would have. What did that mean? How exactly did he feel about her? How did she feel about him, or Inuyasha for that matter? Traveling with Sesshomaru was not uncomfortable at all. She enjoyed it, even if there was silence most of the time. Being next to him was calming. He made her feel safe even though now she knew she could defend herself. Thinking back she remembered how his silver hair shined and blew in the wind. The sun kissed his skin perfectly and made his golden eyes shine. In the moonlight he looked completely different. His hair shimmered a silvery blue. His skin glowed and made him look almost ethereal. Yes, he was a beautiful creature.

‘What the hell am I thinking? This is not possible. Am I falling for him? No! I love Inuyasha, don’t I? I mean, he told me he loves me last night. HE TOLD ME WHAT? Oh kami he did. What do I do? I don’t even know how I feel about him. I have waited so long for him to tell me that. Has it been too long? I am happy that he finally told me, but it isn’t the happiness I expected. And why can’t I stop thinking about his brother? Poo on a freaking stick.’ Dawn was breaking over the horizon now, and Kagome felt some relief as Inuyasha began to stir. Maybe he wouldn’t say anything and just let it be for right now. Her head was too full as it is and she was getting a headache.

Inuyasha inhaled deeply, taking in the scent that surrounded him and filled his senses. He sleepily smiled until he realized who the scent came from. His eyes shot open and he sat straight up looking into the clearing. Slowly he turned around, wondering if it was really real. When he saw her he thought he was still dreaming, and he didn’t say anything in fear she would disappear.

“Inuyasha?” she said softly. His eyes opened even wider when she spoke, and his jaw dropped to the ground. He started touching her all over; her head, face, arms and hands.

“You, you’re really here! It wasn’t a dream!”

Kagome giggled at him. “No Inuyasha, it wasn’t a dream.” She was completely caught off guard when he suddenly embraced her. He held her as if she would disappear if he let go.

“I was so afraid it was all a dream.” He buried his head in her hair. “That’s the first night that I have slept since you’ve been gone. I have had nightmares every night. I just didn’t want it to be untrue.” ‘I didn’t realize what I had until you were gone.’

Kagome held onto him and comforted him. “It’s ok Inuyasha, I am here.” It startled her how open he was being. It was so unlike him. Inuyasha was so much like a scared child right now. He was an open book, completely defenseless. This was Inuyasha, the real one and raw to the bone. Finally he released her and just stared at her. She smiled at him and her blue eyes shined with understanding and compassion.

“We should head back to the others before they freak out.” He nodded and they headed back towards the village. No words were spoken; they just enjoyed each others company. The sun was making its way further up the horizon and the village was beginning to wake. Sango and Miroku were already awake and making breakfast while Kirara was still curled up in a hut. Sango and Miroku smiled at them.

“We were about to come looking for you guys. Everything ok?” Sango asked.

They looked at each other and smiled. “We’re fine.” they said in unison.

“You look better Inuyasha, did you actually sleep?” For once Miroku wasn’t being perverted; he was truly asking how Inuyasha was.

“Yea, no nightmares for once. I actually slept all night.” Truth be told he slept exceptionally well. He was intoxicated by Kagome’s scent, and it gave him some rather…interesting dreams. Inuyasha blushed at the renewed memories, and of course this was not missed by the monk. He wouldn’t miss the opportunity to be a little lecherous.

“Ah, so our dear Kagome was indeed comforting. I have missed you as well Kagome-sama, perhaps…” He wasn’t able to finish his outspoken thought because Inuyasha thumped him on the head, hard. A large lump protruded from his head.

“Don’t start monk.” Sango and Kagome both giggled. Sesshomaru’s presence did not go by unnoticed by Kagome, who turned to see him walking towards them. She smiled a warm greeting at him, and even though he wouldn’t show it, he smiled back at her as well. Yes, he was still perturbed by Inuyasha’s confession last night, but he also recalled that Kagome did not say anything back to him, at least not before he took off into the forest.

“Hey guys, um, I know I just got back and all, but since we are so close, I was wondering I could go home for a while? It has been over half a year since I have seen them and I don’t want them to worry anymore. I would only be gone for one day, and I would be back in the morning so we can leave.”

“Yea Kagome, you should go home for a while.” Sango said and Miroku nodded in agreement. Kagome knew that they would agree, it was Inuyasha and Sesshomaru that she was worried about. She turned to look at Inuyasha, afraid he would immediately start yelling.

“It’s fine Kagome, you need to see them. We will see you tomorrow.”

Her jaw dropped to the ground. “Really Inuyasha?” He nodded and then she turned to Sesshomaru. “Is it ok Sesshomaru-sama?”

“I will escort you there.”

“Oh there is really no need for…” he growled low at her. “Ok let’s go.” She was not going to argue with him. She wasn’t sure if Sesshomaru was aware of the well and where she was from, but he would figure it out pretty soon. Kagome grabbed her backpack and led the way to the well. “Will you stay in the village with the others?”

He looked at her as if she were crazy. And then she stopped at the well and sat on the lip of it. “Is this a joke miko?”

“My name is Kagome and no, this is not a joke. I was merely wondering where you would stay.”

He raised an eyebrow at her. “What are you doing?”

“I am going home.”

“You live in a well?” If he was trying to be humorous it was not working in his favor.

“No, look I will explain everything later. I should go before it gets too late. I will be back in the morning.” Before he could say or do anything she dropped into the well. A blinding blue light engulfed her and then she was gone. Kagome snickered. ‘Well if he didn’t know then he probably got a good idea after that.’

Sesshomaru continued to stare into the well. The girl had just disappeared. “Hn. Interesting.” ‘Perhaps she came from a different time or place through this well. Has she had this power all along? There will be a discussion when she returns.’ he decided to wait for her until the following morning. Ningens are not creatures he preferred to be around on such a regular basis, especially a whole village of them.

------------------------------------------------------------ ----------------

As Kagome landed gently on the other side of the well and felt the magic subside she still had a smirk on her face. ‘Serves the arrogant bastard right. His face was rather humorous. His got were rather wide when I fell inside. I wonder if he realizes that.’ She climbed out of the well instead of levitating. In fact she had forgotten about these powers she had come to possess. All there was was home. Dear sweet home with Mama and Souta and Grandpa. The doors of the well house creaked open as the bright sunlight poured through. The shrine was just as she had left it, and obviously grandpa had been busy keeping it clean. Some worshipers looked at the strange girl that appeared out of no where. Kagome paid them no mind. She walked over to the god tree. It was the one steady presence in both times.

“Kagome!” at that moment Kagome was pummeled by her overexcited little brother. “Your back! Wow, you look different. Where is Inuyasha? Did you bring me anything? How come it’s been so long since you’ve been home?”

He reminded her so much of Rin right now it wasn’t funny. “Souta, calm down.” she laughed at him as she hugged him. It was hard to see how big he had gotten since the beginning of their adventures. It had been five years already. Kagome was almost twenty, still naïve, and still never had her first kiss. She had barely graduated high school, but her grades had suffered tremendously. Souta had just turned fifteen this year. He was still a child in many ways, but was quickly growing into a man. His hair had grown out a bit and resembled that of Miroku. He had a girlfriend, Kagome found out as the two stood by the god tree and caught up.

“So Souta, what’s been going on around here?”

“Oh, you know the usual. Grandpa going on with his legends and keeping the shrine going. Mama, well she will have to tell you.”

“Tell me what Souta?”

“Nothing Kags. Just let her tell you ok?”

Kagome glared at him and hit him in the arm. “Fine. What’s been going on with you?”

That’s when he blushed. In fact he resembled that of a tomato. “Well, I, um, I have a girlfriend.”

“OH Souta! That’s great! What is her name? What does she look like? How old is she? Does Mama like her?”

“Kagome! Now you are the one to calm down.”

“Sorry it’s just really exciting is all.”

“Well, her name is Anna. She is an exchange student from America. She is really pretty. Blonde hair and hazel eyes. Mama likes her, she even invited her for dinner a few times.”

“That’s great Souta. I hope I get to meet her.” Kagome acted happy, but inside she was hurting. Souta was doing all these things she was never able to do. He would be driving, hanging out seeing movies and going out with friends. And now he was dating.

“You look so different Kagome. What happened to you?” Souta asked looking her up and down.

“Hm, it’s a long story, I’ll just tell everyone together. So where’s mama?”

They started walking towards the house. “She is in the kitchen making breakfast. She has been worrying about you for a long time now. None of us knew what to think, though I knew Inuyasha would always keep you safe.”

Kagome smiled at her brother. He would never find out about what had happened. Souta looked up to Inuyasha as a big brother. She would never take that away from him. “Yes, I know.”

Mrs. Higurashi looked as if she had seen a ghost when Kagome walked through the door with Souta. She almost dropped her spatula. She ran over to her daughter and embraced her in a bear hug. “Oh Kagome! Thank kami you are ok! It’s been six months and not a sign of you or Inuyasha. Where have you been? What’s happened? Is everything alright?”

“Maaamaa…” Kagome wheezed out.

“Oh sorry honey.” her mother said letting her go. Kagome gasped for air, making a mental note to never let her mother go without word of her for so long.

“I’m ok mama, see. Not a scratch on me. Sorry it’s been so long.”

“You look so different, what has happened?”

“How about I tell you all over breakfast?”

“Of course dear.” Mama said smiling. “Help me set the table?” It was good to be home.

She had to change the story around a bit, but she made it seem credible. She told them that Kikyo came to take her place and tried to kill her. That she was able to escape and Sesshomaru took her in. She told them of the position and responsibilities he had given her and that he helped her send Kikyo on to the afterlife. She created a ball of light in her hands and manipulated it to show them all what she had learned. Explaining to Souta that Inuyasha was being controlled by Kikyo, he couldn’t do anything to help save her though he wanted to. Now they were living in the western lands and Sesshomaru was going to help them.

“Wow sis! You were cool before but now your just freakin awesome! And you have two demons that like you now!”

Kagome turned red as a beet. “What? Sesshomaru doesn’t like me.”

“Sounds to me like he does. After everything he has done for you I think he does and I think you like him too!”

“Why you little…” Kagome lunged across the table but wasn’t able to catch him before he ran up the stairs. She sat back down in a huff.

“It does sound like this Sesshomaru cares about you Kagome.”

“No mama, he doesn’t. This is the same demon who tried to kill me the first time he saw me. The one who doesn’t do anything unless he benefits from it. I don’t know that he cares about anyone.” Her mother smiled in understanding.

“People change Kagome. He hasn’t tried to kill you, he saved you. He is allowing your friends and a brother he doesn’t like to stay with you. He gave you all these things to do in a position of power and he trained you to help you be who you want to be.” Kagome thought over these things. “How do you feel about him Kagome?” She looked at her mother and then down at the table.

“I… I don’t know.” Silence reigned in the kitchen for a few moments.

“So, you are teaching all these children on your own? Do you need any supplies? The book store is having a sale this weekend, it would be a great opportunity to stock up.”

“That would be great mama. There are some things that I need.”

“How long are you staying?” her mother was looking at her expectantly. Kagome hated that she could only be there for such a short time, but they were so close to being done.

“Only tonight. We are almost done mama. There are only two shards left and then it is over.”

“Ok, let’s clean these dishes and go shopping!”

Kagome knew her mother was disappointed, and she wished she could stay longer. She wished that her family here and there could both just always be together. Kagome climbed the stairs to her room to find Souta waiting for her.

“What are you doing in here?” When he didn’t look at her Kagome knew something was wrong. “Souta, what’s the matter?”

“You are only staying tonight, aren’t you?” he still didn’t look at her.

“Yes, Souta, only tonight. There are only two shards left and with Sesshomaru’s help we should be done soon I hope.” She sat on the bed next to him and put her hand on his shoulder.

“It’s just that you have been gone so long. There is so much happening and you’re not around. I have my friends to talk to and mama, but I want you and even Inuyasha.” Kagome could hear the sniffles coming from her brother and it brought tears to her eyes.

“Souta. I am so sorry I haven’t been here. I have missed you guys too, more than you know.” she didn’t know what else to say to him. She was split between two worlds, two families and she had been severely neglecting one of them.

“Do you regret it? Breaking the jewel? Do you regret your time there and not being here?” This was the time he looked up at her, to watch her face to see if she would lie to him. She heaved a heavy sigh and thought for a minute.

“Do I regret it? No, I don’t. I miss you guys and I hate not being here to see you grow up. But I also have another part of me back in the feudal era.” she turned and looked right into his eyes. “Have you ever felt like you don’t belong where you are? Felt like you should be somewhere else, that you aren’t really whole?” Souta shook his head no. “All my life I have felt like I was missing something, a part of me. This is home and always will be, here with you and mama and gramps. But now I have found the other place I belong. When I am here I know the rest of me is there and vice versa. I exist in two different times, I belong with both sets of people. I think all of us, we are all connected in spirit, that’s why I feel so at home there just like I do here. So I can’t regret it, because if it didn’t happen I wouldn’t feel whole. Do you understand?”

Souta thought it over for a while, and the nodded his head. “Yea sis, I get it. I just worry is all. Can, can I ask you something?”

“You can ask me anything.”

“When you were telling us the story before, you lied didn’t you?”

“What, what are you talking about Souta?” Kagome’s breath caught in her throat.

“You died, didn’t you? It was Inuyasha.”

“How… how did you know that?”

“I haven’t told mama, and I won’t, I just wanted to be sure. I have been having dreams Kagome. About you mostly. It’s like the connection you were talking about. Mama has always told us that we were special, I just never knew how much.” Kagome couldn’t speak. No wonder he was acting like this. He was so scared and didn’t know where to go and who to talk to. She could feel how frightened he was, but also something else. Maybe pride? She wrapped him in a hug.

“Souta,” she started softly, “I am so sorry I haven’t been here for you. I never thought that you would have abilities too.” He accepted her embrace and laid his head on her shoulder.

“It scared me at first, and sometimes the dreams still do, but now they kind of let me keep track on you.” he grinned at that. “I worry so much for you, but I know you will be safe. Inuyasha and Sesshomaru will always keep you safe. I am not mad at Inuyasha for what happened, I know he didn’t do it because he wanted to.”

“So, do you know what is going to happen Souta? Can you see the future?” Kagome was getting excited to be able to have someone else in the family that could do things too.

“Sometimes, I think. I don’t really know what is happening to you and when so I can’t be sure, but I think the blurrier visions are things that may come to pass. Do you think maybe you could help me with it before you go? Help me focus?”

“I can try, how about after mama and I get done shopping. Do you want to come with us?”

Souta’s eyes opened wide and he smiled from ear to ear. “Yea! Let me go get ready.”

He bolted out of the room to get ready to go with them. Kagome laughed to herself and got ready herself. Normally he would never have gone but he wanted to spend time with her before she left. Now he didn’t feel so weird, he had been waiting so long to tell someone about the dreams. Of course he couldn’t tell her everything. He knew she would push for answers later that night, but for right now they would just enjoy each others company. The three of them met downstairs by the front door. The book store wasn’t very far away so they decided to walk. They talked and laughed down the street, the warm sun brightening their moods and making the day more memorable. The book store was bustling, everything was on sale. Souta looked for things for the boys while Kagome and her mom looked for things for the girls. All in all they made out well considering how much they bought. Children’s, adult and coloring books. Math, language, children’s science, and so many other learning books. Flash cards, construction paper, scissors, crayons and markers. Anything that was available they got.

“Well, they should all be quite entertained for a while.” Kagome’s mom said.

“Yea! This is awesome! And there are some good long books I can read to them. I think I am going to need a couple more backpacks though to get this all back.”

“That’s fine honey, I need to go to the store anyways, we can get some there.”

“Sounds good, let’s drop this stuff off first.”

They made their way back to the house and dropped all the books off. Souta decided to stay home this time. He knew he would have time with Kagome later, now it could be just her and their mom. The two women spent the day talking about life in general. There was no need to talk about things in the past, they had already been discussed. Then Kagome’s mom dropped a bomb on her.

“Kagome, there is something a need to tell you.”

“What is it? What’s wrong?” Kagome was visibly worried, her mom never talked in that tone. They sat down on a street bench by the park, watching the kids play and couples walk around.

“Well, I got a job nursing at the hospital. I am in the pediatric ward. I really love it and it is bringing more money into the shrine. The government funding was keeping us going but it just got too hard without other income.” She looked at her Daughter waiting for a response.

“Ok, so what’s the problem?”

“Well, there really isn’t one. I, I have already told Souta and he is ok with it, I just need to tell you and make sure you are ok with it too.”

“With you getting a job? Of course I am ok with it. If it’s what you want and Souta is almost at the age where he can get one too and…”

“No Kagome, that is not what I am talking about. The job is a major thing yes but there is more.” her daughter looked at her questioningly. “I… there is a doctor there, in the same ward. His name is Shintu, and, um…well, we have kind of been seeing each other.” Kagome’s mouth dropped.

“You, have been seeing some one? And he is a doctor.” Kagome simply nodded her head but said no more.

“Kagome,” she looked at her mother, but her mother was looking at the ground, “if you don’t want to see him anymore, I won’t.”

“Does he make you happy? Does he treat you well?” Her mother smiled but still focused on the ground.

“Yes, he is a good man.”

“Then go for it.” She smiled at her mom when she looked at her surprised.

“Really?”

“Yea. I know you don’t want to replace papa, and no one ever will. You deserve to be happy though, and if he can give you that then I support you on it.” Mother and daughter hugged and relief filled the elder of the two.

“I was so afraid that you wouldn’t want me to, that you would think I was trying to replace your papa. I want you to know that I would never do that. Your papa was the love of my life. I just, I have mourned for him and I have been alone for so long. I know he would want me to be happy.”

“I know he would too mama. You know he is waiting for you, but he wants you to have a good and happy life. I know that, I know Souta does too. I want to meet him next time I am here, no running off and getting married without me now.” Kagome laughed at her mothers blush.

“Kagome! There will be none of that.”

“Yea, sure. But I will tell you right now, if he does anything wrong I am sicking Inuyasha on him.”

“Oh I can just see that now. That is a deal though, but I don’t think its going to happen.”

When the women got home from shopping Kagome went to find Souta while her mom went to start dinner. They sat down by the god tree and Kagome showed Souta how to focus and meditate. “Ok Souta I want you to focus on one certain thought. Find what it is and hold on to it. If anything else comes into your mind acknowledge it and then let it go until only that one thought remains.”

She waited while Souta focused on just that one thought until she felt his mind and energy calm. When that happened she spoke softly. “Now take that one thought and expand it. Let it grow inside your head and follow it where it takes you.”

Souta focused on a picture of his sister. She was standing in a field. As he let his mind expand he saw before his eyes her entire gang of friends, and Sesshomaru. Letting his mind open up even more he saw many soldiers standing behind them ready for battle. Looking back at Kagome he realized she somehow looked different but the image was fleeting as his mind focused on what the group was staring at. There before his eyes was the most evil looking demon he could ever picture. Demons surrounded him and started flying straight towards him. That’s when Souta screamed and came back to reality.

“Souta! Souta! What is it? What’s happening?” Kagome wrapped her brother in her arms as he tried to catch his breath.

“You. You were there with everyone and there was an army behind you. And then there was this, this monster with demons surrounding him and they flew at me. He was so evil Kagome.” He looked at her frightened.

‘Naraku, you plague my brother’s dreams too?’ “It’s ok Souta, it will all be alright.” She held him and rocked him in her arms. “Who you saw, his name is Naraku. He is the one we have always battled, he is the one we have to defeat to finish the jewel.”

“You have to fight that thing? Kagome you can’t! He’ll kill you. He was so powerful, I could feel it. You can’t go!”

“I have to Souta. Please don’t worry. I have all my friends and so many others that will be with me. I know we will defeat him. Just trust me, ok?” Souta nodded his head.

“I won’t tell mama, but you better come back as soon as you beat him.” Kagome nodded as she swallowed the lump in her throat. ‘If I can come back.’

“Come on, let go see if mama is ready for dinner.” the two walked inside just as their mom finished cooking and putting everything into bowls. They all sat down to eat and grandpa started in on one of his rampages while Buyo sat lazily nearby on a counter. They all sat and talked for a while until Kagome became quiet and withdrawn.

“Kagome sweetheart, what’s wrong?” her mother asked with concern in her eyes.

“There’s something we all need to talk about.” Everyone put their full attention on her. “We only have two shards left. When the jewel is complete, I… I don’t really know what will happen when it is complete.”

They sat silent for a moment before Souta spoke up. “What do you mean sis?”

“I mean I don’t know what will happen. For all I know when the jewel is done nothing will happen, I can still go to both times. Or I might be brought back here, and not be able to get back there. I just don’t know what will happen.”

“So… you might also be stuck there and not get back here?” Kagome looked at her brother.

“I don’t know Souta. I just thought you all should know the possibilities.” Souta started crying at the thought of losing his sister forever. Normally he was very strong, but he needed her.

“Kagome.” her mother’s voice was shaky but strong. “We all knew the possibilities when this first happened. We knew that you may have been killed, or stuck, or hurt. But as time has gone by everything has been alright, you have been kept safe and healthy. Your father told me when we first had you that you were a special girl, just as Souta is a special boy. You were born with a gift and a destiny and when the time came that I should let you go. And I did. I know that everything will work out for you, because you have a destiny to follow and it is in that time. We worry and we deal with it, but this is who you are.” Tears were streaming down everyone’s faces. “Your father was a special man too, I never told you. Perhaps when this is all over I will tell you about him, and who he really was.”

“Papa knew all this?” Kagome was stunned.

“Hai. Your papa knew. He was a powerful man Kagome. He told me when the day comes that I should let you go and I did. You and your friends are perfectly capable of finishing your task, I know you all will.”

Kagome sat stunned staring at her mother. All this time she didn’t know about who her father really was. He died when she was so young. She had never asked about him really, and never about her ancestors. She should have known someone was powerful, how else would she have such powers herself. But now all this had been dropped on her. Her mother knew, her father knew, and all of what was happening was foretold somewhere.

“Kagome. I know you can do it. I know you will come back. We will all be here waiting for you.” Souta came and hugged her.

“Thanks Souta. I am going to go take a bath and go to bed. I guess I’ll see you all in the morning.” Kagome got up and walked to the bathroom in a daze. When it rains it pours. She was on overload and a bath was defiantly needed. Kagomes head was spinning as she changed and climbed into bed. She was so exhausted she couldn’t even think and drifted off to sleep almost immediately. It was well before dawn when she woke up and began packing everything in her three bags. She took some notebooks and things for her, and placed her freshly washed kimono in one of the not as full bags. Dressed in a form fitting tee shirt and jeans she snuck her things downstairs only to find her mother up and cooking already.

“Mama, what are you doing up so early?” Kagome came up behind her and hugged her.

“Oh just making you some snacks and lunch for your trip. I hope I made enough for your friends.”

“I think so mama. Just make sure I get plenty of ramen for Inuyasha, you know how he is.”

“Oh yes, here, go and put some in your bag.”

Kagome walked towards her things. “They are all almost full. I took some things for me and I have enough for the food and that’s it, they are stuffed!”

“Did we really get that much stuff? Wow, well good thing you will be set for a while.”

Kagome helped her mother cook breakfast as the others woke up and set the table. Breakfast wasn’t as gloomy as dinner had been the night before. They laughed and shared stories and Kagome made sure to tease her brother a bit for having a girlfriend. Breakfast was soon over and it was time for her to go. They all followed her out to the well house and tossed the bags into the bottom. She hugged them all as the tears came yet again. They looked at each other and remembered the moment between them fully aware that it may be the last time they would see each other. Giving them all a reassuring smile Kagome nodded her head and jumped into the well.

------------------------------------------------------------ --------------

The Inu-gang and Sesshomaru were all waiting for her on the other side of the well. Inuyasha was sitting on the edge when the familiar blue light appeared along with Kagome’s fresh scent. He looked down and she looked up, both of them smiling.

“Yo.”

“Hey, you wanna help me?” He jumped in and grabbed two of the bags.

“Damn woman, what you got in here rocks?” Kagome giggled at his expression.

“Try books for the children Inuyasha.”

“Not like they need it.” That earned him a smack on the head.

“You know Inuyasha you should feel lucky I can’t ‘sit’ you anymore.” His ears flattened against his head at the word but the expected slam into the ground never came. With this new realization he stuck his tongue out at her and jumped out of the well. Kagome levitated herself out after him greeting her other friends with a smile.

“Morning guys! Good morning Sesshomaru-sama. Are we ready to head out?”

“Yep, all set. We were just waiting on you!” Sango said as she hugged Kagome.

“Ok! Hey Sesshomaru-saaammmaaaa! Hey, don’t sneak up on me like that! You almost gave me a heart attack!” He had walked right up behind her so silently she hadn’t noticed till she turned around and almost bumped into him. Though his face didn’t show any hint of emotion whatsoever, in his eyes she could see he was laughing. “Yea, yea. Laugh it up chuckles. Anyways, we flying or walking?” Not even bothering to answer her he called down his cloud from the skies. “Right, fly it is.”

Kirara transformed and Inuyasha, Sango and Miroku all climbed on. “Do you want to ride with us Kagome?” Sango asked.

“No, I’ll fly, but could you guys take a couple of these bags?” Before Sango could grab two of the bags Sesshomaru grabbed one.

“I believe,” he said so low only Kagome could hear, “there is no need to weigh the beast down with unnecessary luggage.”

She glared at him and came very close to his face. “This is not unnecessary luggage. I’ll have you know that this is all for the children you told me to teach.” He stood straight up, and Kagome had to look straight up in order to look in his eyes. It was at this point she realized exactly how close they were. She gulped hard.

“I only told you to teach Rin, you brought the rest of them into it with them, if I recall correctly.” Sesshomaru could smell her nervousness and a small smirk formed on his face. Her eyes widened and her breath became strained.

“Ah, haha, yes your right! Well thanks for carrying it.” she said hastily and ran to join the others. ‘You did not just see him smirk. You did not just want to kiss him. You did not, you did not, you did not!’ she mentally scolded herself. As they took to the skies Kagome could feel his eyes upon her. She tried to ignore it as she turned to her friends who just sat there gawking at her. ‘Great.’

Not one for idle chatter Sesshomaru stayed a good deal in front of the rest of the group. He did however stay within hearing range so as not to miss out on hearing anything that might be of interest, not that anything would be of interest. Left to his own devises, the great lord was left to ponder on the events of the past couple of days, particularly the meeting between the miko and the hanyou. He remembered hearing the low growl come from the half breed when he stood towering above Kagome earlier. He remembered hearing his brother confess his love for the miko, even though it was in the first traces of sleep. He hadn’t intended on following her, he had merely decided to go for a walk to get away from the humans. It was his nose that betrayed him, following her sweet scent. Before he knew it he was standing just outside the clearing eavesdropping on the two of them. The miko did not lie to him, she had in fact completely forgiven his pathetic excuse for a brother for his betrayal. His mind was split between finding her foolish and admiration. He chose the first, recalling how emotions were weakness and she was the most emotional human he had ever met. But she was not weak. Confused at his own thoughts Sesshomaru continued to remember that night. She had allowed Inuyasha to rest on her lap and ran her fingers through his hair. Sesshomaru growled at this memory and felt his blood begin to boil. The hanyou had then professed his love to her as sleep began to overtake him. The demon lord had wanted to kill Inuyasha right then and there. Sesshomaru knew how they felt about each other, and yet he was still trying to gain her attentions.

‘She is not yet marked!’ his beast roared from within.

‘What do I care, she is a ningen.’

‘Even so, she is powerful and will provide a strong pup.’

‘That is not why I want her.’

‘So you admit to wanting her.’ the beast prodded.

‘…’

‘Admit it again. Why do you want her?’

‘She is attractive. The strange clothing she wears accents her assets. She would be entertaining in bed. That is all.’

‘Then why haven’t you taken her yet?’

‘… Shut up.’ he growled at himself inwardly. These new realizations he was coming across in his mind were disturbing. He was so distracted in his own thoughts that he didn’t notice when Kagome came up behind him. She could tell he was frustrated, but as soon as she spoke the mask was back in place.

“Sesshomaru-sama?”

“What?” his tone was cold enough to chill her spine and she flinched.

“Well, um, we are making good time and we were all kind of hungry. Could we stop and eat for a little while?” she spoke so meek he couldn’t help but soften. He hadn’t realized what time it was or how quickly they had traveled.

“That is acceptable.” his tone was not as harsh this time and Kagome smiled. They sat down near a stream where Miroku went to go find some firewood while the women set things up. Inuyasha went to get some water in one of Kagome’s “plastic bottles”.

“Ok guys, mama packed us a really good lunch!” Kagome said happily as she pulled out the rice balls and sushi. Inuyasha grumbled a bit to himself and Kagome smiled at him. “Don’t worry Inuyasha, go look at what else is in the bag.” Inuyasha’s eyes lit up and he leapt over to the bag she pulled the sushi out of.

“RAMEN!” Kagome laughed at him. He always got so excited over ramen. She placed it in the now boiling water for him and then went about giving everyone else their food.

“Sesshomaru-sama, would you like some lunch?” Kagome sighed as he shook his head in the negative, but at least it was a response.

“Hey woman! Is my ramen ready yet?”

“What did you call me?” Kagome asked him placing her hands on her hips. “You better watch it, you may not have the necklace, but I am not weak anymore either.” she scolded him as she handed him his ramen.

“Keh.” he grumbled while grabbing it from her hands. He pulled so hard that some of the scalding water almost spilled on her.

“Hey! Watch it Inuyasha.” Kagome yelled at him.

Unfortunately Inuyasha did not give her a response because he was too busy gobbling down his lunch. Kagome turned around and started talking to the others only to be interrupted by something dropping and Inuyasha yelling.

“AHHHHHH! Hot! Hot! Hot! Hot! Hot! Hot! Hot!” In his haste to eat the ramen he had ignored the fact that his tongue was on fire and his throat had swollen. Everyone laughed at seeing him running around scraping his claws at his tongue with tears streaming down his cheeks. He ran to find water and grabbed the still hot pot of water that had been used to make his ramen.

“Damnith!” he cried. Finally remembering that there was a cold stream nearby he ran into the woods. By this time Miroku, Sango and Kagome all had tears streaming down their faces from laughing so hard. Even Sesshomaru half smiled at his ignorant brother’s antics. Kagome caught a glimpse of the rare sight before it was gone again. When Inuyasha finally reappeared his head was soaking wet from being dunked in the water. Once again the laughter came, though they really did try to hold it back.

“Shuth up ou guyth.” Hearing him talk like that just caused them to laugh harder. Inuyasha crossed his arms over his chest and hmphed while they tried to compose themselves. After what seemed like an eternity to Inuyasha they all stood up and began to get ready to go. He was sitting on Kirara sulking and grumbling by the time they were ready to take off. Kagome looked at him as their journey began again and giggled.

“Whath tho funny?”

“YOU ARE!” she said laughing harder now.

“Shuth upth woman!” the laughter was uncontrollable again and Sango and Miroku couldn’t help but join in with her.

“You should have known better.”

“Keh.” was her only response as they took off into the midday sun.
