Act 14: The Cold

Dawn had broken some time ago. The castle was awake and bustling about, the servants stirring from their sleep to begin their morning duties. Cleaning the castle-Sesshomaru appreciates an immaculately clean home; opening all windows and screens to let the light in-Kagome liked the sunlight, and since then, their lord ordered the castle to be kept bright; and preparing breakfast for their master and his guest.

Except…that was the only problem. The food was brought out to the dining table, and the servants bowed to Sesshomaru, who dismissed them half-heartedly. Beside him, Rin anxiously piled her bowl with food, and shoved them into her watering mouth.

Idly to himself, the demon lord noted that one of these days, he had to improve her table manners, but at the moment, his mind was a bit preoccupied with something else. Or rather, someone else. His eyes flickered over to the empty tatami mat beside him, the place where Kagome sat during meals.

Just looking at the unoccupied seat made his heart twist unexplainably. Thoughts and visions of the night prior plagued his restless mind. The scent of sakura blossoms, the soothing sound of her soft breathing…Kagome's warm lips.

Even now the demon lord could still feel his lips tingle slightly upon remembrance of the kiss. 'The stolen kiss,' A voice nagged in his head, causing him to tap his finger in annoyance against the dining table. Sesshomaru, Taiyoukai of the West, had stolen a kiss from a human-not just any human, Kagome Higurashi, his brother's woman, his own personal prisoner, and in her sleep no less.

'Oh how the mighty have fallen,' was the first phrase that came to his mind. But even as he disgusted himself from the thought, he could not deny the fact that he…well, perhaps he…enjoyed the kiss…Well, that was the wrong word for it. Intoxicated, was more like it. The way her scent wrapped around his senses, her full, pink lips parted slightly as she drew in breath in her slumber, the taste-the feel of her lips as his tongue glided meekly over them.

It was enough to leave him craving madly for more of her. Kagome had no idea what she did to the demon lord. 'Not to mention, she does all of this while she is unconscious! Dear god, what is happening to me?' He growled.

Rin looked up with questioning eyes, some rice stuck on her chin and cheeks. She swallowed.

"Isn't Sesshomaru-sama going to eat?" Rin asked slowly. Sesshomaru glanced at the child, then at his untouched food. Suddenly, he didn't feel all that hungry (though his stomach growled in protest). He did not answer the girl, but instead let his golden orbs travel back to the empty tatami mat.

'Kagome Higurashi,' He thought. There was no confusion on his part anymore. He wanted her; that much was obvious. But it went deeper than just plain lust, Sesshomaru knew that was for sure to some extent on that too. He reasoned in his mind, that it definitely not desire that felt for the girl alone.

To want her body, to sate this sexual tension…that was different than wanting Kagome for her mind, her soul. Not to mention, Sesshoamru had never lusted after any female before, so this was already unusual as it is. And, the demon lord couldn't help but admit (to himself and only to himself) that he would not want Kagome if she was not who she was.

Her tender smiles, her infinite (well almost) patience, her forgiving heart, her melodious laughter. And even more, the way his name seemed to roll of her tongue, in a soft caress when she called to him, rather than sounding like a whipping lash when spoken by others.

More than anything, Sesshomaru found himself wanting her to be pleased, satisfied, happy with him. 'As I am when I'm with her.'

He growled mentally. 'All of his derived from that one kiss?' He stared angrily at his food now, which had gotten cold. Rin was on her third helping and he, well, he was getting impatient. Not to mention, a little worried.

Kagome was not here for breakfast as usual. He couldn't eat without her, or at least, he didn't have the heart to eat if not in her presence. Almost worriedly in his mind, he wondered if it had anything to do with his actions the night prior.

Perhaps, Kagome had not been asleep like he thought, but was conscious when his lips descended upon hers? Perhaps she was angry with him? That he had stolen something so sacred from her while she was asleep? No doubt she would think it was something dishonorable for a demon lord to do… Or perhaps she was upset because she was saving her first kiss for-dare he even think it, Inuyasha?

The last thought was shaken out of his head immediately as it was causing him to become unusually uncomfortable. No matter how he looked at it, Kagome was still, not here. Sure she was sometimes late, but Kagome was usually very prompt when it came to mealtimes.

He sat there for another minute or so, contemplating what in the world could be keeping the woman, when he could take the uncertainty anymore. He stood up abruptly, walking past a full Rin and the servants who came in the dining hall to clean up the plates. They could only stare after him.

Sesshomaru walked briskly down the hallway towards Kagome's room. 'I hate feeling like this…' He growled to himself. 'This feeling of doubt, of anxiety. Another human emotion that I could do without,' He thought, cursing his human side for the hundredth time.

When he came to her shoji door, his hanyou ears caught the unmistakable sound of coughing. His features softened, letting himself take in her scent, which was seemed to be slightly different than usual. Tentatively, he slid the door open, letting his eyes rest upon the frail girl within.

Sure enough, Kagome was there, still in her futon. She was in a sitting position, hunched over, and coughing continuously, her hand covering her mouth. He approached her, and she didn't seem to notice as the hacking wracked her small body.

Kneeling beside her, the demon lord placed a hand against her back soothingly, waiting as her coughs died away and she calmed down. As soon as she did, Kagome turned around to face Sesshomaru, her tired, sapphire eyes meeting his in a rather surprised manner.

"Oh, Sesshomaru-sama," She sniffed, smiling weakly. "I'm sorry, I didn't realize you were there."

He frowned, his golden eyes examining her carefully. Her usually fine, raven mane was tangled and disheveled. Her cheeks were a burning red, and sweat permeated her brow. He noted that Kagome was breathing heavily and her voice was a bit cracked when she spoke. He moved closer to her, looking intently into her sea of blue eyes.

"You were not there for breakfast this morning," Sesshoamru stated firmly.

Kagome laughed quietly.

"Is it really that late? I'm so sorry for not waking up sooner, Sesshomaru-sama. I must have overslept, I'll get up now…" But before she could move, another fit of coughs shook her body, and she was hunched over again. Unconsciously, Sesshomaru ran his hand back and forth against her back in an attempt to sooth her.

"You are not well," He said matter of factly, though his eyes seemed to soften with concern. 'No doubt from staying out in the snow too long,' He mentally growled, knowing that he shouldn't have let her stay out there so long in the frigid weather. Not to mention, she was covered in ice-cold snow, her clothes had been soaked, her body was shivering.

Well, guiltily he had to admit that it was partly his fault. He was throwing snowballs at her to boot-and quite unmercifully he might add.

Kagome shook her head.

"It's just a little cold," She insisted, trying to take off her covers, but Sesshomaru pushed her back onto the futon, her clawed hand coming up to touch her warm cheek and trail slowly up to her even warmer forehead.

"You have a fever."

The girl sighed, coughing lightly.

"It's not that big of a deal. I can still get up."

"No." He growled, pulling the covers up to her chin and looking intensely at her. "Foolish girl, you are in no condition to do anything. You are unwell, and require bed rest. This Sesshomaru commands it," The demon lord said firmly. For a moment, it looked as if Kagome was about to protest, as she opened her mouth to say something, but she began to cough again. Her body slumped back against the covers, and she nodded warily.

"Alright, you win, Sesshomaru-sama," She said softly, looking at him with half-lidded eyes.

Sesshomaru felt a tugging at his heart; uneasiness fell over him as he watched Kagome lying there. She looked so frail and weak. Sure, he had always thought humans frail and weak, but never Kagome. No, she was anything but weak. Tenderly, he brought his cool hands to feel her burning forehead again, feeling the heat that radiated off of her.

Kagome moaned softly, whimpering when he took his hand away, obviously not wanting the coolness of his palm to leave her. His lips thinned.

"Nira!" He called out sharply, and within moments the shoji screen door opened. The aged cat youkai was kneeled at the door, her head bowed low so that her forehead was touching the wooden floor.

"Yes, milord?"

"Go fetch a basin of ice cold water and some cloth," He ordered. "…For Kagome's fever," He added. Nira looked up in surprise, her pale eyes instantly went over to the girl who was resting on the futon. Yes, judging from her scent, Kagome did have an illness. She nodded, and quickly went to get the pail and cloth.

But before she left completely, Sesshoamru called out to her again.

"And tell Aki to prepare some tea-"

"With honey!" Kagome added, and they both looked in surprise at her. Her face grew even redder. From the fever or from the sudden comment they weren't sure. She gave them a small smile.

"Oh, Sorry," She said weakly. "It's just, that my mother always tells me that tea with honey helps with coughing." Kagome explained, her voice soft and shy. She sank back under the covers in embarrassment. Clearly, they weren't familiar with it, but she had to ask. She liked tea with honey. "It's okay, you don't have to, I-"

"With honey, then," Sesshoamru interrupted, giving Kagome a reassuring smile and nodding towards Nira to do said tasks. Kagome smiled back, causing the demon lord to melt at the simple action.

"Thank you," She whispered. Sesshomaru looked away, his emotionless mask slipping back on as he tried with all of his might not to let that smile get to him.

For a while, the room was completely silent-a very awkward silence. Only the sound of Kirara's mewls could be heard, as the fire neko youkai jumped off from the window to curl beside Kagome. She giggled and rubbed the cat's ears, and she began to purr, causing Kagome to giggle (with a couple of coughs in between) even more.

Sesshomaru watched her out of the corner of his eye the entire time, a smile tugging at his lips at the endearing sight. He was almost caught in a trance watching her until her soft voice called out to him.

He looked up suddenly, his attention fully on Kagome.

"What is it?" He asked her stoically, but gently. She sniffled a bit; looking out the window which glistened with white snow that was caught in between the frames. She sighed.

"I'm…I'm sorry, Sesshomaru-sama," She barely whispered. The Taiyoukai looked at her, not quite understanding what she meant.

'What is she sorry for?'

Kagome turned to him, her sapphire eyes glistening in the morning sun.

"For causing you so much trouble that is. I mean, if anything, I'm a prisoner, right? And here, I'm getting the kind of treatment that I know your other prisoners don't get-Not that I'm complaining or anything," She quickly added. "And here, I feel like I'm being such a thorn in your side, getting sick like this and all. And it was because I stayed out in the snow all day yesterday probably too," Kagome chuckled.

"You must think I'm pathetic," She finished, giving him an small smile as she continued to rub Kirara's ears. "If it's any consolation, I didn't mean to get sick, Sesshomaru-sama."

Sesshomaru remained speechless throughout the entire time, utterly shocked that she was the one apologizing to him. It made no sense! Why should she feel remorse over something that was not her fault? The demon lord felt a twisting feeling in his chest, which he could only identify as guilt.

He hid his gaze from her, his silver bangs covering his eyes as the door slid open. Nira returned with the basin and cloth. Beside her, was Aki, who carried the tray of tea in his grubby paws.

"So it's true, Lady Kagome has caught a fever!" The badger scrambled over worriedly, careful not to spill any of the tea. He quickly placed the tray down, and went to her bedside, though keeping enough distance so that Sesshomaru was satisfied.

"Nira-san told me about it. I made your tea just how you like it, Kagome-sama! With extra honey too!" He beamed proudly, causing Kagome to smile.

"Arigato, Aki-san. I'll be sure to drink every drop."

"Please do. I wish for your health to return soon, milady."

Nira cleared her throat, catching the badger's attention. She motioned for him to leave, seeing as Sesshomaru began to show signs of impatience, and obviously wanting to be alone with Kagome. He nodded, bowed to both of them, and followed the elder youkai out of the room.

The shoji door slid shut, and once again, they were both alone in the room. Slowly, the demon lord reached out to the cloth hanging over the basin, and dipped into the ice cold water.

Kagome watched through half-lidded eyes at Sesshomaru's graceful movements, in a clouded mind, noticing how beautiful his silver hair gleamed off of the morning sun.

Still, he wouldn't look at her. Not since she apologized, which caused her to sadden a bit. 'Does he not accept my apology?'

"Kagome," He said softly causing her to look up at him suddenly. He twisted the cloth, squeezing all of the water from it before folding it. "This Sesshomaru should be the one apologizing."

Kagome lay dumbfounded on the spot, only staring confusedly as he proceeded to dab her brow with the damp cloth, wiping the sweat off of her heated skin tenderly. Looking down at her, their eyes locked, and for one second, the demon lord ceased his movements, letting himself in her sapphire pools.

"But…Why?" She finally asked after finding her scratchy voice. This seemed to break his trance as well as he blinked once, removed the cloth, and dipped it back into the basin of cold water.

"It is true that you are my…prisoner," He said almost regretfully, "and as such you are my responsibility. This Sesshomaru should never have allowed you to stay outside in such cold weather for so long. Nor should I have engaged in that snowball fight with you yesterday," He said stoically, though Kagome could sense a bit of sadness laced in his voice.

She moved to sit up, and the demon lord instantly aided her to a sitting position. She gently placed her hand over his, and shook her head.

"You're being too hard on yourself. Don't forget, I'm the one who started the snowball fight in the first place," She laughed, reassuring him.

"But this Sesshomaru is youkai. Even as a hanyou, being partly youkai means being immune to such illnesses. I was not thinking about you…you are human…and I had been carless," Sesshomaru's look of guilt did not leave him.

"Sesshomaru? I'm going to be okay…really…"

At this, the demon lord looked away, and she could feel him tense with uneasiness.

"I shall call for a healer," He said firmly, taking the damp cloth and dabbing at her skin again. Kagome grabbed his wrist. Their gazes locked.

"Really, Sesshoamru-sama. I'll be fine, it's just a cold."

Sesshomaru sighed, putting the cloth down, and looking at her sternly.

"This Sesshomaru, has seen humans perish from such common illnesses," He said in almost a whisper, his voice no longer masked but full of worry and concern.

Kagome gasped, her sapphire orbs searching his golden ones, only finding sincerity in them. 'He's truly worried about me…' Does the thought of her dying bother him so? Was it because he didn't want her death on his conscious? Or was it because, dare she even think it, he didn't want her to leave him?

'Gods, girl, you're getting ahead of yourself,' She blushed profusely, which gave Sesshomaru reason to think that her fever worsened. Still, Kagome smiled softly and tightened her grip on his hand slightly. 'That's right, back then they didn't any antibiotics, so it wasn't rare that people died from the common cold.

"Where I come from, we have medicine to cure colds. They're very powerful, and they work very well, so rarely anyone ever dies from a cold," Kagome explained. Sesshomaru seemed to be at full attention when he heard this, his gloomy façade lifting slightly.

"And…this medication, where can I find it?" He pressed. Kagome laughed.

"Oh, you don't have to look very far for it," She said, coughing a little before pointing to the far corner of her room. "It's in my backpack, in the front pocket. The medicine is in a little brown, transparent container."

Sesshomaru looked at the bag, then at Kagome, nodding before he got up and walked over to the backpack. He dug through various items (many of which he had never seen before. 'What the hell was a Tampon? And…this "Shampoo" sort of smells like Kagome…sort of…') Finally, he found what he was looking for, pulling out a container that had little pebble-like objects inside. Plastered on it was a piece of scroll paper that had writings and inscriptions in which he was unfamiliar with.

He looked over his shoulder, showing the little box to Kagome, and she nodded in approval.

"Yeah, (cough) that's it…"

Returning to her side, Sesshomaru promptly handed her the medicine, and she whispered thanks. She was about to open it when her hand froze on the lid, blushing slightly. Sesshomaru raised an eyebrow at her.

"Is there something wrong?" He inquired.

"Um…it's just that…The directions say it's a good idea to not take the medication on an empty stomach…" And just as soon as she said it, her stomach growled low.

Sesshomaru nodded.

"Understandable. I shall tell the servants to prepare you something to eat." He got up and headed for the door, looking back at the miko. She gave him a small smile as she reached for the cup of tea.

"Arigato, Sesshomaru."

He nodded and left her alone. Staring after him, Kagome took a small sip of her honey-flavored tea, making sure to compliment Aki later for such a fine job as the liquid warmed her entire body.

===

"One miso soup, coming right up!" Aki bowed, bustling around the kitchens and urging the servants to prepare a small meal for the sick girl in bed. Sesshomaru watched them all the while, which sort of made them uncomfortable. After a short while, the door slid open, and Rin came in hugging Sesshomaru around the leg.

"What's Sesshoamru-sama doing here? Did Aki-san do something wrong again?" She quipped. Aki laughed slightly, then he turned to the demon lord as well.

"Well, I must ask why you are here for as well, Sesshomaru-sama. It's not like you to stay in the kitchens with your vassals."

He looked blandly up at them.

"I am going to take the tray to Kagome in person," He replied without emotion.

"Ah, I see." Aki looked away, a knowing smile on his lips as he could see the plain concern that his master held for the miko. "I just hope this will make Kagome-sama feel better," He added, stirring the soup in the pot continuously.

"What's wrong with Kagome-neesan???" Rin burst out, panic written all over her face. She began to tug on Sesshomaru's pant leg, and looking at him with pleading eyes. "Is Kagome okay, Sesshomaru-sama?"

He sighed and patted her head, prying her off of his leg.

"Kagome has a slight cold. But other than that, she is fine," The demon lord reassured her. Still, Rin's lower lip trembled.

"Rin wants to go see Kagome-neesan right now!" She was about to sprint out of the room and do just that when Nira, who was just on the other side, stopped her.

"I don't think that's a very good idea, Rin-chan," The aged neko youkai advised, causing the girl to pout.

"But why?!"

"Because Kagome is ill, and not feeling well. If you wander too close to her, you might catch the sickness too," Nira explained gently. The little girl looked up at Sesshomaru, who nodded in response. Rin's face fell.

"But Rin wanted to make Kagome-neesan all better…" She whined. Nira chuckled, kneeling down and taking the child by her shoulders.

"There are more ways than one. The snow is beginning to melt, and it is relatively warm outside today," She looked up at the demon lord. "If milord will allow it, this servant shall take Rin outside briefly to pick the flowers at the far side of the garden."

"Will flowers make Kagome feel better?" They both looked hopefully at the Taiyoukai, who contemplated the notion for a couple of seconds. Surely, he did not want Rin to catch cold as well, not after what happened to Kagome. But Rin wanted to aid the miko in some way, and since there was no way that he was going to let her visit until Kagome was better…Besides, he couldn't refuse…

"Very well. But make sure you do not stay outside for too long," He turned to Nira. "If the child falls ill, you shall be punished accordingly," He warned the elder cat.

"Of course, Sesshomaru-sama," She bowed and took Rin by the hand, leading her out the gardens. The demon lord stared after them, whisking around when he realized that Aki was done with the soup. The badger gingerly scooped a spoonful into a bowl, and placed it on a tray.

"Sesshoamru-sama, may I ask something?" He asked while going to find a spoon.

"You may."

"Well, how long will it be until the new moon has arrived, milord?"

Sesshomaru thought for a while, a frown gracing his lips.

"Soon. 10 days or less," He glowered. 'I don't have much time…'

"Might I make a suggestion then?" Aki said hopefully. "Since time is running out, why don't you do something special for her?"

"The library…" the demon lord started, but the badger waved it aside.

"Not something material like a gift…I'm thinking more along the lines of a romantic dinner; a night in her honor. During which you can try to win her over! It is a process that I believe humans call 'courting.'"

Sesshomaru listened intently, thinking it over. It sounded like a good idea, no doubt Kagome would love a candle-lit dinner, just the two of them. Ideas began to pop into his mind. A moonlit walk on the snow-covered grounds…he can have a new kimono made for her…

A growing warmth seemed to grow within him when he imagined the smile that would grace her features when he'd take her into his arms under the stars. He mentally shook himself. Surprised at the sudden thoughts that came to his head.

Aki smiled.

"It is obvious that Lady Kagome harbors some feelings for you milord," He pressed, hoping the demon lord would approve.

Sesshomaru looked over to the miso soup, still steaming in its' bowl. 'Yes, Kagome and I have formed…a unique bond. Can I safely say that she is my friend?' A flash of Kagome's smile. 'Yes, she is my friend, but can is that all she feels for me?'

"I think it's time to take your relationship further."

"To get her to…love me…" He felt a rising heat in his cheeks, and he cursed his human half again. 'Damn, I'm blushing again!' But he couldn't help himself, the idea of Kagome…possibly loving him…of caring for him…

For some reason, it made him content. His mind wandered briefly to the time in the snow, when he and Kagome had been tumbling down that snow covered hill, her laughter ringing in his ears, her scent surrounding him…her arms wrapped tightly around him.

He hadn't noticed it then, but he realized, how completely wonderful it felt to be held by her, to see nothing but trust shining from her eyes when she looked up at him.

Coming out of his reverie, he looked at his servant, who was smiling madly at him.

"How long will it take to prepare?" Sesshomaru asked stoically.

"A couple of days…" Aki surmised.

"Very well. I shall put you in charge of making preparations. I want everything ready by the time Kagome recovers."

"Oh, I don't know if…" Aki panicked. Sesshomaru growled.

"I'll try my best, milord. But that's rather tricky, considering I don't know how long it takes for Lady Kagome to heal. After all, she's a miko. She might be well by tomorrow morning-"

But one look at Sesshomaru's piercing gaze brought him down.

"I'll do my best, milord."

"Good," Sesshomaru took the tray with the miso soup out of the room, leaving the badger to his plans for the romantic evening.

===

The empty bowl lay forgotten on the table. The container of Kagome's antibiotic pills next to it, and her teacup had only droplets clinging to the rim.

Sesshomaru placed the damp, cool cloth over her forehead again, relieved that her fever went down a bit, though it still lingered. He watched as she slept, her breathing calm and gentle. Her cheeks were still flushed a vibrant pink, and yet…the demon lord could not help but think her…completely beautiful.

As if it had a mind of its' own his hand went to brush aside a few raven locks that creased on her sweaty brow. 'This feeling inside of me…they grow stronger every time I look at you…Is this the emotion humans call love? Am I…falling in love with you, Kagome?'

He ran his fingers through her hair, trailing down to stroke her cheek tenderly, then he touched her lips, his fingertips tingling at the contact. Just as quickly he drew his hand away.

'No, I must not give in like last time…' Sesshomaru chided himself, even inside he was aching to feel her lips against his once more. But a part of him argued, that somewhere in his passion-riddled mind, that he when he kissed her, he wanted her to be aware of it.

He wanted her eyes on him when he leaned down to capture her lips, shudder at his touch when his tongue ran across her lower lip, tasting her mouth. He wanted her to reciprocate, to respond to him. To feel her arms around his neck, her hands buried in his mane.

Bottom line, he wanted her to want him just as much as he wanted her.

He sighed. Knowing that if he stayed any longer, he wouldn't be able to wait for such a kiss. He began to get to his feet, ready to walk out when his head was suddenly yanked backwards. Sesshomaru glanced back at the girl, his eyes widening when he saw the grip she had on a lock of his hair in her small hand.

'When did she…?'

He sat back down, attempting to pry her fingers off when they gripped tighter, refusing to let go. He growled.

"Woman…" He breathed, slightly annoyed. But she didn't seem to hear him, moaning slightly in her sleep. His golden eyes widened when he realized she was mumbling something in her sleep…a name…

"Se…Sessho…" She whispered.

'My name…' He sat back down, finding himself unable to wake her.

'I want my hair back, but I don't want to disturb her. She called for me in her dreams…' the last thought brought a red tint to his cheeks. 'Is she dreaming of me?' He wondered. Brushing her bangs aside, Sesshomaru brought his lips to her forehead, kissing her affectionately there.

He sat back up, gazing at her with a tender look in his eyes that he had never given to anyone else before.

'It seems I have no choice to stay here beside you…Kagome…'
