Blood and Chocolate
Prologue-Dark Melody
In Fear I hurried this way and that. I had the taste of blood and chocolate in my mouth, the one as hateful as the other.
Hermann Hesse
Her hand twitched with readiness and her Ki pooled into her inner being like a pool of lead. Her body pulsed and vibrated with spiritual power as she gathered her energy. She reached over and grabbed the hilt of her arrow in fluid elegance.
She strung her bow with ease and practice and disciplined trainings.
The tip pointing to the flying scenery as she raced across the night sky.
The stars twinkled and radiated light as the sun immerged behind a blanket of blues and green's coloring the horizon. The ground was blanketed with pastel leaves and the trees looked like blotches of green amongst the wild life.
The wind was chilled with oncoming winter, it bit at her eyes and exposed flesh like needles.
`Please be safe everyone.' Kagome mentally pleaded.
Flashback
The group had split up at her request to go home and take her High School Exit Exams. She was lacking in her schools with the bare minimum of three days of studying to be able to pass her final test. The dictionary of diseases had been destroyed due to a little accident at home and now her grandfather was running low on diseases for her absence at school. She had been dreading the High School exit test for some time now, and now she just wanted to shrivel up and hide. All the math problems and complex equations were giving her a split personality.
Her friends had let her copy their notes to study for the test after a long day of pleading and whining. But it had cost her a whole plate of hamburgers at Wac Donald's. She had stayed up most of the night and well into noon studying, she had barely left her room except for the occasional bathroom break.
She had woke expecting a sore back and stiff limbs from sleeping on the ground in the cold air. Then the realization that she was no longer back in the Shikon Judai hit her hard forcing her to sit up. She realized with dry humor that she was back home in the future where the only demons were called solicitors and police officers. She cleared her sleep crusted eyes with drowsy hands and was greeted with the sight of her brother playing with buyou on the window sill.
The morning light streamed through her bedroom window sending warmth spreading though her limbs. The bed was all disarrayed from her little “Nap”, but in reality she had promised she would just rest her eyes for a minute. Then she woke up well into noon with bad breath and a hard line to her mouth. Today it would be non-stop studying and no messing around.
After chasing her brother with a bottle of hair spray out of her room she prepared her notes and spare math problems and began studying with an exasperated sigh.
The test had been easy, and Kagome chided herself for studying so much in the first place. She wasn't the type to study for a large amount of time, she usually would find some nick knack to grab her attention. But she had been disciplined and went through with no disturbances. Now that it was time to leave she couldn't move her legs to the well. Her home felt like a blurry dream with a sad song playing in the back ground. She just wanted to spend time with her family and eat some fish grilled with curry and pickled beats.
`It won't hurt to stay longer.' She placed a finger on her lips in thought.
~*~*~*~~~~
When kagome had pulled herself from the old Bone Eaters well with her backpack stocked full with nourishment, she had caught Kirara's small form out of the corner of her eye.
“Kirara?”
Her voice sounded low and furlong as she glanced around her for the others. The small kitten purred as she trotted over to kagome. A pain of dread spread through her body and pooled low in her gut making her shiver. Kagome stared at the small demon as it rubbed against her leg in a silent gesture.
“Where is every one?” Kagome began but the sinking feeling was getting worse. It was her fault she cried, she had left for more than one day in their time. She strictly told them she would be gone for no more than two days. But she pushed the promise to the back of her mind as she walked into her house with her mother calling her name. She let her head drop as she groveled in anger at her own selfishness.
She had specifically told them no more than two days and here she was four days later with her uniform washed and a new back pack. She had enjoyed eating hot meals and a nice bed to sleep in when her friends had to sleep on the ground; the fire their only source of warmth. She had a nice hot bath with bathing materials when they had the cold stream with ground up soap leaves as their implements. She cursed her selfishness until she was light headed with the strain to her head. She focused on Kirara as she transformed into her cat demon form. She set her bag down on the freshly sprinkled grass and rummaged through it for her quiver of arrows and her bow. She found her new make up kit and cups of dried romen along with her under garments.
She caught the bow and quiver and snatched it from its prison of supplies. She set the bag on Kirara's shoulders and set her bow on her spine. Kagome reached behind her back and slide her lace of string connected to the quiver to the other hand and brought the twin pieces to her hip and tied a double not. Then she flipped her hair from under the weight of the quiver at the middle of her back to let it fly freely as she flew to her companions. She slung her body weight on top of the demon as she took flight to the clear skies.
`Please be safe everyone.' Kagome mentally cried out.
End Flashback
Kagome gripped the silken fur on Kirara's back as she heard the distant cries of battle. Strange; she mussed, the sounds produced by battle sounded like a song. Like the occupants were producing a tune with their body language and cries of pain. The way they all combined to produce a melody of blood lust and need for dominance.
The voices like a string of sound equalizes on a music graph. She could only imagine a perfectly insane person could come up with what she just analyzed.
And that was what she was, insane.
The ground started to turn from a blur of colors to a picture of an early fall morning atmosphere. She blinked the wind blown tears from her and flexed her fingers around her bow. Her powers were like a sizzling heat under her skin, ready to come forth at will. Her arrow was glowing with purifying Ki as she felt the prick of the Shikon No Tama as she neared the scene of the battle.
Kagome was puzzled. Not many of the Shikon pieces were left to gather, the evil demon Naraku had the precompleted Shikon in his grasp. Every day she could feel the darkness gathering in the jewel from its master's corruption like a stain spreading through time. The darkness would soon be a gathering source of power for greedy hands that wished for supreme power.
This would cause an out break through out Modern Japan and would corrupt lands and people in the middle of it. But; she though sourly, it was her own arrow that created this evil in the first place. And it was this body that stored the jewel of power from her birth to the first time she came to meet Inu Yasha.
When Kikyo had died from a bitter ambush by the Demon Naraku, she had taken the Shikon No Tama with her to the after life. Kagome was born as the reincarnation of Kikyo and born with the burden Kikyo had endured from birth. She was the protector of the jewel of the four souls. But if she hadn't been pulled into this time she would have never met a certain stubborn hanyou with the temper of a child. And three wonderful friends that she would give her life to see them happy.
Kagome was brought out of her musings as a rough landing forced her to be jerked forward and pushed back in a whipping manner. Kagome took a minute to regain her breath and surprise and then slouched of Kirara and slung her bag over her shoulder covering her quiver. She adjusted it to a more comforting position and glanced at her surroundings. There was the sound of metal on metal to her left like a sword being pushed back against force by an unknown foe. She averted her eyes to a small opening at the base of a canopy of trees. There were ferns and small foliage adoring the ground as she raced through the jungle of fur covered oak trees and mustard plants sprouting out of the ground like weeds.
Her bag was forcing the quiver into her back at an excruciating level making her wince every ragged breath she inhaled. The jog was quick and to her horror brought her to very intense scene. There was a ruin of jagged rocks and boulders littering the ground in the wake of an intense battle. The ground upturned and blackened with brute force. The sounds were louder as she neared the scene. Trailing behind her in every wake was Kirara, twin tails twitching as she heard the distant sound of battle.
Kagome swallowed the lump of shame in her throat threatening to choke her as she took to a fast jog down a path of burnt earth and ashes.
Kagome felt her powers flare as she neared the Shikon No Tama's location. It was like the jewel was calling out to her, crying for its protector. But she pushed the thoughts away as she came to large wooden door cracked and split into chips. The door stood to the height of a great oak tree in the middle of a great grey wall that spread like a barricade around what could only be a house protected inside.
The wall was chipped and worn with age along with the designs chiseled into the frames of the door. There were pieces of wood sprawled around the door and to her left like dead bodies. Kagome glanced at Kirara as she walked ahead to the destroyed door. The cat demon stepped over pieces of broken oak and dried Cyprus into the shadows behind the mangled wood door. Kagome fallowed suit and cautiously walked over debris and trough a large tear in the battered door. The inside of the fortress was dark, giving off warning signals of death and evil that resided in every nook and cranny.

Every step her legs endured felt like a thousand insects were crawling beneath the surface, and every breath she made felt like lead to her tongue. The area was crawling with evil. The ground was misted with miasma and demon Ki like sheens of water. The ground felt like a thick vapor of hatred and the darkened sky feed the scene around her. Her bow was clutched tightly in her grasp stationed next to her hip as she walked to her enemy.
Kikyo's eyes darted around her as she searched for her main target. The wind was a slight breeze against her face and gently blew her midnight black locks as she walked through thick miasma.
When the wind would pick up, it would thin the miasma to a fine vapor making it easy traveling. But that didn't stop her mind from screaming at her, the entry to Naraku's hid out was to easily breached. That wasn't like Naraku; he had a plan for his actions that made Kikyo a little skeptical. It was like she was walking into a planed disaster, just like the first time she was killed by the hanyou.
Her soul hunters floated lazily above head like a pack of vultures ready for an easy meal. The world seemed slower when you were a walking corpse with one goal for eternity. There were many little details you paid no heed to, just the one main goal. And that was what she was accomplishing; nothing. Not until she destroyed Naraku. She was nothing, no feelings, emotions, and only fleeing memories.
Kikyo listened to the silence around her and peered at her soul Stealers. They were flying in circles and hissing to each other in song. She knew that she should be amused but it was only a thought. She extended her left arm as she halted in her steps.
The smoky white demon glided through the air and floated over her hand and stared at her chocolate eyes with its bottom less black orbs. Its hiss of warning and message of slight foreboding was all she understood and needed to hear as it regrouped with the rest of the demons.
Kikyo slid her gaze to an old wooden bridge covering a slithering river at the outskirts of an abandoned human village. The village was surrounded by Cement walls, and large oak doors. She sized up the scene ahead of her and continued her walk to Naraku. The Soul stealers seemed to hesitate for a moment but followed their master with hesitance.
“This is no matter of your own, you may stay.” Came Kikyo's monotone voice as she glanced back at her flying companions.
Their was much blood shed and death ahead, she could taste it on the wind as she walked through shrubs and dried grass once known as a vegetable garden.
`Inu Yasha.'

Kagome sprinted to Inu Yasha's side as soon as she spotted him a distance away. His face was casual with his brows creased to form a smirk. Kagome slowed down when she looked around the deserted castle grounds. Miroku, Sango, Shippou and Kirara should be by his side. Kagome looked at Inu Yasha quizzically as she walked up to him slowly.
“Is every one alright. Where are Sango and Miroku?” Kagome questioned as he took a step towards her. Kagome felt her nerves in her body warn her to step back but her legs wouldn't work.
“What's wrong with my body?” Kagome voiced as she began to panic.
Her body was like a rag doll, her arms felt like stuffing and her legs felt like rubber. All she could do was stand there and watch as Inu Yasha's smirk grew into a grin. Kagome's eyes widened as she looked into his eyes.
`Their blank.' Kagome mentally squawked.
“I should have known this was a trap, and now I'm the damsel in distress”.
She had walked head in with no intention of causing Inu Yasha to worry about her, but events took a turn for the worst. She was now standing in a deserted village with no people around and a wall to her right preventing her form running if her legs were working. There was a thing in front of her that looked like Inu Yasha, yet was giving off the non violent waves.
`Yeah right. The thing has murder in its eyes stupid.' Kagome snorted.
She had no help or protection, and nobody to hear her scream.
`Oh yeah lets just burst his ear drums to death. That would surely kill him, and give you a sore throat.'
Kagome mentally prayed to god that she would have a nice day and keep her life so she could live on and have a family of her own with who; well she didn't care right now.
Kagome refocused on her attacker and felt a bolt of power flare in her right hand. The tips of her fingers tingled and spread trough her whole arm. Kagome flexed her fingers and felt the answering call of her powers to the demon in front of her.
The wind started to pick, and with it brought the sound of battle. That gave kagome the strength she needed to call her powers to her whim. Just when she was going to let the power go she halted. When Kagome fixed her eyes on her attacker she felt the bright aura of spiritual power flying quickly towards her.
`Kikyo.'
Kagome felt the impact of the spiritual arrow before it even touched the demon directly in its path. But it was too late, the power of the arrow overpowered hers in strength and she was thrown back against the cold hard earth. The land was hard and Kagome gasped in pain as she felt her body go numb. She tried to stay consioucs but her eyes fell down like a curtain blocking the world from being viewed. Her mind was blank with endless pits of white. She felt a black void spread in the back of her mind and reached for it with welcoming hands.
