Chapter 8: Love's Betrayal and Naraku's Plan Revealed!

He would have to act very carefully and cautiously if he planned on getting them both out alive, preferably with Kagome still a virgin. He needed to think about his situation thoroughly if he planned to make a heroic escape. He closed his eyes and let his mind wander, quickly dozing lazily.

It was a cool summer day, and Inuyasha lay naked in the grass beside his favorite hot spring. He never thought he would be able to settle down in one place, but he knew that if he planned on raising his pups with Kagome, they needed to have a house to live in. Not trusting the construction abilities of the humans of the nearby village, Inuyasha had set out to build their hut himself. Of course Inuyasha's strength and claws were much better suited at battle than building. Nevertheless, he knew it was his duty as a man to provide his family with a well built shelter.

He couldn't believe it had been three years since the death of Naraku. He couldn't be more thankful that he had managed to narrowly escape from his grasp, saving himself and the still virgin (at that time) Kagome. Realizing his earlier mistake, he quickly rutted with her thereafter to be certain he would finally have her. Sure it wasn't the most romantic of mating rituals, but it served its purpose and he was satisfied with the outcome (which of course was his premature ejaculation, due to his inexperience, but he had grown from that problem shortly there after). Regardless, he had made her his mate, and that was at the forefront of his mind at that time.

It was in fact Naraku who led to his admittance of feelings for Kagome, so he had to be particularly thankful to that evil man. He thought it was fitting though: The kindest of men always do wrong, just as the evilest of men do right.

He certainly wasn't either of those examples, but he knew that Kagome loved him regardless, and that was the most beautiful part of their entire relationship.

Her admittance to loving him for him is what had finally pushed Kikyo out of his mind for good. He knew Kagome offered happiness Kikyo couldn't have dreamt of, and ultimately that was what he wanted.

His son, who was rightfully named Kashikoi(clever), which he must admit was entirely Kagome's idea, had turned out to live up to his name. Inuyasha was happy that he took more after his mother than him, and it felt fitting to him. He knew he was going to be a trouble maker someday.

Inuyasha smiled softly to himself. Things had finally worked themselves out, and he knew everything was going to be alright.

Inuyasha awoke slowly, the smile still on his face. It was the tinge of pain in his chest that brought his mind back to his situation. There was something strange about this “Shikon no Tama” fragment that Naraku had placed inside him.

The throbbing pain in his chest had been growing steadily ever since he returned to this place. Inuyasha had realized long before that whatever Naraku had placed in his heart could not be a shard of the Shikon no Tama. Inuyasha's first hint was that the object was controlled by Naraku's will, and it only pained him when Naraku commanded it to. The second and most obvious clue that it was a fake was Kagome's inability to sense its presence, despite having her hand directly over his heart.

But whatever it was couldn't be even a fake shard of the Shikon no Tama, because Inuyasha could recall Kagome detecting something of similar description from the arm of the wolf demon Kouga. Inuyasha was certain that this was a weak point in Naraku's plan. Somehow Inuyasha could defeat this object in his heart, and he was hopeful that it would offer him some sort of escape.

But what could the object actually be? Inuyasha knew that Naraku had plenty of tricks up he sleeves, but he had never encountered something similar to this. He knew Naraku could create fake shards of the jewel, but those shards were made from the Shouki (poison gas) that Naraku himself was made of.

But Inuyasha knew it couldn't be poison. The way it burned it felt more like a small carnivorous animal eating away at his insides; but that was a foolish assumption. Naraku's growth in power seemed limitless, and Inuyasha coughed from exhaustion. He wished he knew the secret of Naraku's magic.

The lack of fresh air and water was beginning to wear at the Inu-hanyo, and he knew Kagome must be suffering far worse than he. Inuyasha's time was growing short. He knew that even though he could survive days in this prison, Kagome likely had only a day before her body would cave to the lack of water, and she would die.

But there was a matter more pressing that Kagome's eminent death. It was Naraku's plan to claim her that took forefront in Inuyasha's mind. If he planned on saving her, he needed to act fast. But what could he do?

He flexed the fingers on his right hand, cringing when he tried to move his middle finger. It was definitely severely broken. Not having his right hand at full strength would be a liability when he would try to make his escape, and he knew Naraku would certainly take that knowledge to his advantage.

Inuyasha was growing tired of all the constant silence. His mind pounded with his thoughts, and he was angrier that he couldn't think of a solution to his problem than he was because of the actual problem. Why couldn't he think of anything?

Naraku returned, talking low and horribly to an unseen other, their footsteps echoing along the stone floor, and it sounded like hammers banging on Inuyasha's strained head. He listened more carefully, but he couldn't make out the words, as they were spoken is mumbled whispers.

It wasn't until the other person spoke that Inuyasha immediately recognized the voice. It was a slow, feminine voice, calm and collected, and Inuyasha noted the poise. It was none other that Kikyo.

Soon his nose could smell her scent over the smell of blood and stagnant dust that had engulfed the room he was bound to. He wondered what she was doing in the presence of Naraku. The voices were growing closer, and Inuyasha strained once again to hear the words they spoke.

“And you are certain he can't escape?” he heard Kikyo say. Her voice sounded unusually cruel.

“You are questioning my ability to keep a worthless half-breed like Inuyasha captive? I am undoubtedly in your debt for your contributions to his capture Kikyo, but do not forget that I have the power to send you to the world of the dead where you belong.”

“I do not fear death, Naraku. Unlike you, my soul is clear of any wrong doings,” she said, the usual attitude present in her voice.

“You stand there and claim that despite dooming one you love to not only death but torture? You are interesting Kikyo.”

“He already pledged his life and death to me Naraku. I merely want that foolish girl Kagome out of the picture. What you do to her is of no consequence to me, but in order for Inuyasha to be with me, he must die, so he can join me in hell once and for all.”

Naraku chuckled lowly at her words, “I am more than happy to oblige you then, Kikyo. Perhaps you would like to stay to see their punishment?”

“I take no pleasure in the torture of others, Naraku. Once Inuyasha is dead, I will allow my soul to pass back into the world of the dead, and we can be together forever.” Inuyasha heard one set of footsteps fading away slowly.

So it was Kikyo all along. Inuyasha mumbled a few curses under his breath. He couldn't believe that Kikyo would betray him in such a serious way. A part of him would always love Kikyo, but he couldn't devote himself to her any longer. He now loved Kagome in ways he never loved Kikyo, because Kagome loved him for him, not for what he could be. Kagome wanted him as a hanyo and because of that, he felt more at home in her arms than anywhere else in the world.

But all of that would be meaningless if Inuyasha failed to escape. He knew the future he envisioned with Kagome would only be possible if he made his escape; a task which, at the time being, seemed impossible. Naraku had killed Sango and Miroku, and had converted Kikyo to his side, what allies did Inuyasha have to turn to in this time of need? Though Inuyasha despised it, his thoughts slowly turned to the cocky wolf demon that constantly had an eye for Kagome: Kouga.

Although Inuyasha hated nearly every aspect of the wolf demons, he could not help but admire Kouga's determination, tenacity, and dedication to a cause. He knew that if Kouga knew Kagome's life was in danger, he would no doubt come seeking her valiant rescue.

Inuyasha heard Naraku's familiar slow, sliding footsteps heading in his direction.

“So I assume you were surprised to hear that Kikyo was in fact the one that told me where to find you in the forest that day,” Naraku hissed, his words dripped with venom, “I wanted to make sure you could hear her admittance first hand. Betrayal is a dish better served fresh, wouldn't you agree Inuyasha?”

With Naraku so close, the burning in his chest was growing. It seemed likely to Inuyasha that whatever it was fed off the power of Naraku, and having him close only strengthened it. Again Inuyasha's mind envisioned a living breathing entity, but certainly that was impossible. How could anything live inside him without any air? When he felt something move slightly inside his chest, he was certain he was losing his mind.

“Its interesting to think that in a few short hours I will have taken not only one woman you love from you, but two,” Inuyasha was growing tired of Naraku's chuckle, but soon he would be rid of it for good.

Naraku's mumbling words were falling on deft ears. Inuyasha did not care what he had to say at all. What needed to be said had been said.

Naraku growled, “Are you listening Inuyasha?!”

Inuyasha began to laugh slowly, and it soon rose to a deep and hearty laugh as he couldn't help but find the situation humorous. Naraku's foot slamming into his face only served to momentarily silence him, and after a short grunt his laughter resumed. Naraku continued to assault Inuyasha's face with his foot, until he finally broke Inuyasha's nose. The blood was trickling slowly from it, and it was throbbing in pain, but Inuyasha hardly flinched. Compared to the psychological drama he'd been through, this physical abuse was nothing.

“What is so funny you filthy mongrel?!” Naraku said. Inuyasha could tell he was losing his patience.

“You are too weak to even fight me in a fair fight Naraku. You hide behind illusions and deceptions, but you just prove you are a coward,” Inuyasha's voice was draped in amusement.

“You bite your tongue before I have to cut it out, Inuyasha!” Naraku warned.

“I suppose that's all you can do since you obviously can't even defend yourself with your words,” Inuyasha chuckled softly. A sudden pain in his chest caused him to stop and cringe.

It was Naraku's turn to laugh. He spoke his word coldly, but the fire in his voice was still apparent, “Remember Inuyasha, I control the corrupted Shikon no Tama shard that still remains in your heart!”

Inuyasha smiled, “Too bad it isn't a shard of the jewel at all! If it was, Kagome would have been able to detect it. How could you have overlooked such an obvious facet Naraku? You are beginning to disappoint me.”

“Well Inuyasha, I am surprised at your deductive ability. But what it is is much worse than any shard of the jewel would be. Once it's completed its feeding and injecting its neurotoxins into you, I would be surprised if you could even think about much of anything at all. You see, it attacks the nerves allowing for thought. Soon you will be a mindless puppet Inuyasha. Kikyo only wants your soul, I doubt it she will mind if I keep your body for my own,” he paused, “personal satisfaction,” he said with a chuckle.

Now the pieces of the puzzle were falling together. Naraku planned to destroy the very fabric of who Inuyasha was by removing his mind and soul from his body. Inuyasha recalled Naraku doing something similar to Kohaku, Sango's brother, but he was sure he never remembered such a beast being mentioned before.

“Wondering why I didn't simply wipe your memories like I did to that fool Kohaku?” Naraku's smile glistened in his words, “Unlike you, that human desired his thoughts to be erased. Until now I have been unable to wipe the minds of the unwilling, but you are my first test subject Inuyasha. Oh, and, I think this goes without saying: It will not be quick or painless.”

Inuyasha kept his senses heightened; his chance to escape was coming soon.
