As the sun rose over the horizon, light spilled forth through the gaps in the mat that served as a door to the small hut where three humans and two demons lay exhausted from the previous night's events.

One of the youkai, a young kitsune, lay nestled where he had hidden the night before, when he had insisted upon hearing familiar yells, ones which reminded him of his former parents, and now his current parents. To one side of him, there was a young woman dressed in a pink kimono, one of her hand resting lightly over his sensitive ears, as though pressing his head against her chest in order to help block out sounds he'd rather not hear, made even more obvious by the other youkai, a fire-cat whose twin tails rested over her mistress' hand to protect the kit's ears.

The young woman's other hand lay wrapped around the strap of a very large, very heavy weapon; a 2-meter tall boomerang named `Hiraikotsu', made from the bone of a demon. Only fitting, seeing as how the young woman was a Taijiya, a demon hunter.

But her ready-to-throw hold on her weapon had nothing to do with youkai. It actually was because of a handsome young man nearby who, for all of his charm, good looks, and holy teachings, was a lecher. And the monk Miroku's favorite person to grope? Sango, the lovely young demon slayer.

He was sleeping in a less-than-dignified position due to the fact that he had passed out, rather than fallen asleep, courtesy of Hiraikotsu, for the comments he had been making around the fox-demon Shippou, regarding his absent parents, and the painless cries coming from the nearby woods.

Lastly was Kaede, the old miko who had worked to keep the huntress calm, and the monk alive. Unfortunately, said monk was the first to awake, and notice the still-missing members of their group. But he spent little thought over this as he called out to his remaining companions, telling them of the malevolent tingling at the back of his mind, coming closer to the village with every passing moment.

As the young kitsune ran to hide, the armed and battle-ready humans heard his last statement: "Where's Dog-boy when you need him?"

In the nearby woods, a pair of silver-furred dog-ears swiveled around to catch the sound of movements nearby, while his nose twitched, trying to not get caught in the alluring pull of his mate's scent. Bright amber eyes snapped open, and the inu-hanyou, Inuyasha, hurriedly roused his love to warn her of the approaching threat. No sooner had he pulled on his haori and the miko, Kagome, lifted her bow and was reaching for her arrows, when a howl cut through the air, and a pair of youkai leapt onto the young couple, knocking them to the ground and out of the path of a set of wind-blades.

The two mates looked at their rescuers, even though Inuyasha had already caught the strong smell of wolves on the both of them. Sure enough, Ginta and Hakkaku looked them over briefly for any sign of injury before leaping off of them in order to face the other enemy watching them, holding a small mirror that Kagome and Inuyasha both remembered all too well. Kanna.

And off to the other side, the wolf-leader Kouga was facing off against the wind youkai, Kagura, the offspring of Naraku, who had slaughtered an entire ookami-youkai pack.

"Listen, Inukoro! She chose you as her mate, so you had better fucking protect her, otherwise I'll kill you myself!" Before Inuyasha could respond to Kouga's rant, he saw Ginta and Hakkaku fall from the corner of his eye.

Spinning around, the hanyou drew Tetsusaiga, which he had thought to put on before his haori. Quickly, before Kanna had a chance to turn her mirror from the fallen wolves and towards him, he brought the blade down, actually shattering and destroying her only weapon. She rested her hands at her sides and looked blankly at the half-demon before her. He pulled back to deliver another blow when the pale girl spoke up, whispering quietly: "Thank you."

That stopped all movement. Kagome stopped drawing back an arrow to fire, Ginta and Hakkaku stopped trying to get up and help their now-still prince fight a frozen Kagura.

Said wind youkai stared at her older, more solemn sister. She then glanced at the broken mirror, and back up to the other detachment of Naraku.

"He can't see us, but he can still kill me. Unless you kill him first, miko." Had they not been shocked before, they were now.

"Why me?" Kagome's voice was soft, and Inuyasha wanted to comfort his mate, but stayed where he was in case this was all a trick and they were planning another attack.

" Because you can purify the shards with a touch. Were you to touch Naraku, you would begin to purify his shards, if not him. And once his shards are purified, he can't use them for a short period of time. He would be, for the most part, defenseless against any attacks your obvious mate or your friends would make. With a touch, priestess, you could kill him."

Immediately, Kanna stepped forward, and held out her arm towards Inuyasha, hand fisted, and closed-palm up. In her quiet, solemn voice, she stated, "You need the scent of my blood on you. When the wolves knocked you over, their scent was mixed into yours. If you cut me and get my blood on you, Naraku will believe you killed me and left the wolves to fight Kagura."

With a curt nod, Inuyasha drew the transformed sword across the near-silent hanyou's arm. Blood welled up, and he made sure to smear some on the chest and one shoulder of his fire-rat jacket, then Kanna flung her arm out towards him, causing small splatters of her blood to land on his neck and even on his face.

Afterwards, Kagome asked what the one thing she had been wondering since they had told her to go purify their enemy.

"Where is Naraku now?"
