Barbarians
I. The Human
They have no shame. They sit behind the old miko’s hut, skinning the deer, cutting apart the main joints. The younger one runs a claw along the top of the liver, and pops a steaming bit into his mouth. He takes another slice, and offers it to the other. His older brother tears a bite from the heart, and sets it aside on the unflayed throat. Nudges the younger one and points at the tidbit. Their fangs gleam, long tongues lick blood drops from the corners of their mouths, they rip and relish flesh. They murmur and work quietly together, as though they were hulling rice and not destroying a being.
Barbarians.
II. The Dogs
“Pain? Why would there be pain?” The young dog-hanyou seemed puzzled.
“Ah, it’s the barrier .”
“Barrier?”
“Well, young girls naturally have a shield across their treasure, and to pierce it causes enough pain to make them think twice about giving up their virtue casually,” the man declaimed with a certain smugness.
“I can’t imagine. . .”
“He means the Maiden’s Curtain, InuYasha.”
“Oh.
A puzzled expression drew itself across the hanyou’s handsome face.
“But, why. . .Oh! No claws!,” the silver-haired boy exclaimed as he examined his own sharp-tipped digits. He shook his head, and then paused as an “ah-hah” expression spread across his face.
But his elder brother anticipated his thought.
“No. No fangs, either. “
InuYasha was silent a minute, then a look of sheer disgust crossed his face.
“You mean—a human just batters his way in? But doesn’t that hurt the female?!”
“Aa, certainly can. Draws blood, too, if it’s well and truly done,” the villager supplied with an even greater air of smugness.
The dog demons shared a look, and then twin golden-eyed gazes swung to fasten in revulsion on the human.
“Barbarians,” the two demons breathed.

Author’s Note: this had two sources of inspiration. One was a wonderful scene in Becky Tailweaver’s The White Dog, and the other was having read one too many Kagome/Kaoru Gets Deflowered fics. Apparently the women of fanfic are possessed of some mighty thick, and very oddly positioned hymens. And it seems nobody in either the Sengoku Jidai or Meiji eras have ever heard of either scalpels or a hymenectomy. Those of you who contemplate making reference to such anatomical structures in your own fics might want to check out the Gray’s Anatomy article at <www.bartleby.com/107/270.html>. If nothing else, bear in mind it’s an external structure.
