Chapter 10

I'm Sorry, Kagome

 

It was like everything was mocking her. Everything, everyone. Kikyo and Naraku were glued to each-other, and so were Sango and Miroku. Inuyasha was more and more distant, and as much as she tried to be oblivious to it, and be nice and sweet, caring and loving, she couldn't help but flinch every time he used that `tone' with her. It clearly meant to leave him alone, and it wasn't helping that he was supposed to stay with her 24/7.

The worst thing was that he didn't even realize that he was hurting her. There was no more kissing, no more talking for hours as they ate chocolate cake…

No, wait.

The worst thing was that she thought that he was jealous of Naraku…He kept staring at him and Kikyo, growling. This was too much for her. If he wasn't going to be with her, then why should she sacrifice all this for nothing? They weren't officially together. Looking back to their times together, she noticed they were quite cheesy. She had thought they were together since that night at the club…but apparently, they weren't, considering he couldn't even tell her why he hated Naraku.

Although she was sure it was because he was jealous of his relationship with Kikyo. Kikyo…

“Urgh!” Kagome groaned as she buried her face in her pillow.

Life was getting better with each day that passed, Kikyo decided. Kagome was getting more and more depressed because Inuyasha was apparently very jealous of Naraku.

Naraku…

She smirked. Naraku was very interesting…

Inuyasha felt like shit. He wanted so much to be with Kagome, to hold her, to kiss her, to love her… But he couldn't. He couldn't be with her until he was sure Fuji and Naraku were out of his life for good. Naraku already knew about them being together, so he had to break it. He had to get away from her before he hurt her too much…

He hadn't known her for too long, only two months, but he knew she was very important to him.

He thought he might even love her… but how could he be with her without putting her in danger…?

Sango was in heaven. Miroku and her were getting to know each other better and were enjoying each other's presence even more. Just the day before, he had confessed that he loved her…

The only sounds around were the chants of the birds around and the occasional rippling of the water. The wind was blowing in Sango's hair as she closed her eyes, enjoying the silence around her. She loved this lake, and apparently, so did Miroku. She thought the setting was really romantic as they sat together on the grass, her head laying on his shoulder as they watched the sun set.

“Is this too cheesy?” Miroku asked suddenly.

“Yes,” Sango laughed, “but I don't mind…”

“Well then…I love you…”

“I love you too, Miro…” She said with a grin.

“Morning, Inu,” Kagome said with a smile when he walked down the stairs.

“Hey,” he answered simply.

“Inuyasha…” she started.

“Hai?”

“Are we…together?” she asked. She knew she would sound stupid if he didn't want them to be, but she just had to ask.

He stared at her, wondering what he should say. He knew he had been distant, but he really liked Kagome, and wanted to be with her… But he knew that he couldn't really commit himself yet. Naraku was after him, he knew it. They would stop at nothing to get what they wanted, not even at hurting Kagome.

If he showed them that he was so attached to her, they would go after her…

And that's the last thing he wanted…

“I'm sorry, Kagome,” he said softly, watching as she looked down, her eyes filling with tears. “I'm not ready for anything yet…”

Her head shot up as soon as those words came out. “Then why were you so affectionate before Kikyo started dating Naraku?!” she yelled miserably.

“I'm sorry, Kagome,” he repeated, looking down, unable to see the pain in her eyes.

She shook her head and walked out, using the back door to storm off into her garden. There she collapsed onto the wet grass, letting the built up tears fall.

Why?

Why her?

Why did it hurt so much?

It shouldn't hurt this much!

Inuyasha watched her from the porch, clenching his fists, literally fighting not to go to her. He hated seeing her like this…It hurt him so much to have to leave her…

But he had to…

He had to go… He couldn't be this close to her, or she might get hurt. Was she willing to take a risk like that?

He wondered if he should tell her…maybe she would let him stay with her…

Maybe…if she loved him…

But he wasn't that lucky, was he?

“What is it, Naraku?” Fuji's cold voice sounded into the phone.

“I don't think that Inuyasha is with that girl anymore. I'm not sure he even likes her…”

“Well try and figure it out!” Fuji yelled, “Flirt with the girl! See how he reacts!”

“Yes, master,” Naraku hissed.

“And don't use that tone with me!”
