Chapter 5

Draconic Dilemma

When Kagome pulled into the small private parking lot behind the shrine, and after parking her little Toyota car next to William's Ford Echo that his grandfather gave him, she listened as Will opened the passengers door and climbed out. Then lifting up the seat Ryuu bolted out with a happy yell. She watched as the dragon youkai pulled off his concealing rosary, His hair became a brilliant blue-green, the scales formed around his eyes and faded into his skin which tool on a slight greenish ting, scales also formed at the nape of the neck which spread out and down over his shoulders narrowing and going down his back where a scaled tail sprouted out of his back side. Two curved horns swept back over his head. Scales formed slightly on his arm, hands, legs, and feet. She watched as he turned around grinning widely at her baring his stout fangs.

"Hey Kago I think Asami-san's fixin Oden."

Kagome smiled as she slowly walked toward to stairs leading up the back of the shrine, "Yeah I know." She watched as Ryuu dashed up the steps where he sat down at the top. She thought back on what mom had told her about Ryuu before he had come to live with them

*Flashback in italics*

"Kagome, dear, I need to speak to you about something important."

She remembered her mom steering her into the den and sitting her down on the Sofa.

"What is it mom?"

"Remember my old job with social services?"

Asami, at one time, was a counselor for social services and specialized with kids and especially troubled teens. Kagome remembered how when they had family outings she would always bring one or her "kids" as every one called them, because most of these kids were from bad backgrounds and might never have the chance to go to an amusement park or to the beach. One time they even took one of the "kids" with them on vacation to Europe.

"Yeah mom."

"Well tomorrow I have to go pick up your new foster brother."

"Foster brother!? When did you do this mom?"

"A few weeks ago while you were in Feudal Japan. I sat down and talked with Souta and Ji-chan. We all agreed to this and thought that you wouldn't care."

Kagome remembered sitting there and listening to what her mom knew about Ryuu. At this time they didn't know that Ryuu was a youkai.

"The boy's name is Rikku Ryuu. He's 15 years old and has no parents."

"What happened to them?"

"When he was eight they died in a horrific auto accident. Along with his parents his baby brother and his big sister were also killed. He miraculously survived shielded by his mother's body. After the accident he was shuttled from foster home to foster home and from orphanage to orphanage. He had grandparents but they had disowned his mother, and wouldn't claim him as their grandson."

When Kagome had meet Ryuu she couldn't see that accident happening to such a cheerful boy. It wasn't until later on during dinner that they realized the full extent of why he was so unwanted.

All evening since Ryuu arrived Kagome had been having chills' they were the same type of chills that she had around youkai in the Shingoku Jidai. She glanced over at the slightly relaxed 15 year-old boy who was currently stuffing Oden down his gob. The chills seemed to be coming off of him. Ryuu looked up from the empty bowl and pointed his chopsticks toward the chicken teriyaki. Somehow Kagome couldn't picture this lively boy as the picture the social worker gave them of a little 8 year old boy with blank staring eyes that held no spark of life. Still that chill radiated from him making her uneasy.

They had just gotten done with dinner when Kagome heard footsteps coming up the hall. Ryuu's head snapped up and his eyes seemed to flash. For a second a deep fire seemed to erupt deep in his eyes. At that moment to shoji slammed open and a mad hanyou stood in the doorway bristling. Ryuu had stood up snarling. Kagome sat there between the two and clearly heard Inu growl out 'dragon' and Ryuu snarled 'dog'. A well-placed sit soon had Inu hugging the floor and Ryuu sitting on the floor laughing at him.

The rest of the dinner had gone semi normal. Souta admired Ryuu just as he did Inu. Ryuu sat there entertaining them with a glass of water that he was making do tricks because he was a water dragon. Inu had seemed jealous of Ryuu for some reason.

The rest of that night had been a blast and the next morning she went back to the Shingoku Jidai. Once she got to the top of the steps she glanced toward the well house. She had stopped trying to go through long ago; instead she had made it into a shrine for her friends. On the eve of the battle she would go in, sit down, and talk to them hopping that somehow they heard her.

Looking over at the house she hopped beyond all hope to see a disgruntled dog demon sitting in the trees watching her. No that would never happen he was dead along with all of her other friends. The only friends she had that might still be alive would be her youkai ones.
