The Illness
I awoke early the next morning to a pounding headache and a sore throat. Slowly, I got up, feeling a bit dizzy as I went to the bathroom to get a thicker robe before staggered to the kitchen. Grabbing the ingredients to make a quick breakfast, not caring about the noise level.
* It was just a dream….like always…dead with the morning sun.*
I thought bitterly as I placed the food on the counter.
I didn't hear him come down, nor did I sense his presence until he spoke, his words cold and angry.
"You must have a death wish, human!"
"Huh?" I said as I turned around and saw a very angry youkai looking directly at me.
"You . . .you're real!" I breathed, as loud as my throat would allow.
"Yes, what the hell do you think I am!?"
"I'm sorry," I said as I turned from him to continue my cooking my meal. I felt a clawed hand on my shoulder spin me around with enough force, in my weakened state, to send me to the ground reeling. I couldn't move, the headache and the dizziness were overwhelming, and my throat was so sore that to speak would have been like swallowing acid.
"Get up, woman! I didn't touch you that hard!" commanded Sesshoumaru.
I tried to move, but I felt so sick . . . like I was about to black out any minute.
"Hey, what's wrong with you?" he said as he roughly hoisted me to my feet, causing me to flail towards the sink, where I began to violently heave. Unfortunately, there was nothing in my stomach. Feeling more alone and helpless than I had in a long time, I began to cry.
*What the hell is wrong with her? I haven't even done anything yet! Is she sick? How is that possible, she seemed fine the other night*
Sesshoumaru thought as he held the young girl, rubbing her back in soothing circles as his mom had done for him when he was still a pup. Slowly, the heaving subsided and the scent of tears took its place. Gently, he pulled her away from the sink, reflexively catching her as her body faltered slightly. Deciding that she would collapse if she walked alone, he relented and scooped her into his arms. That's when he felt the heat radiating off of her.
*She is awfully hot, even for a human.*
He carried her upstairs and laid her down on the bed before using his claws to neatly slice the robes in half.
"Human, why are you so hot?"
"F. Fever . . ."
*She tried to move again. She is crazy!*
"Look, it's rather obvious that you can't move, so stop trying unless you seek an early death!"
"T . . .Thermometer . . .I need to . . . see how high the fever has gotten," Jena muttered. I tried to move once more. . . and then my world shifted to impenetrable darkness.
I awoke to the sound of someone screaming downstairs. I slowly managed to get up.
*The fever must have gone down; did he take care of me?*
My thoughts were interrupted by the sound of pots hitting the wall and a string of very creative curses from the kitchen. When I got down there, I saw the immaculately clean and cocky Prince covered in dried pancake batter and holding said box of batter in one hand and a pan in the other. Laughing slightly, I took the box and the pan away from him before he obliterated any more of my kitchen and made breakfast. I could have sworn I heard him say,
"Show off".
Finally, after breakfast was done (and he had had a bath) we sat down on my bed. Most girls in my position would be showing extreme lust/playfulness or some form of romantic infatuation. Me: nothing. I could barely even manage a smile, and apparently being ignored was not something my houseguest was prepared to have happen to him.
"Are you mute, woman?"
"No."
Deciding that this was going nowhere fast, he realized that he would have to support the conversation alone.
"Why have you summoned me here?"
I sighed.
"I didn't mean to . . . my birthday was yesterday . . ."
"You mean three days ago."
Sigh
"Really? It's been that long?"
"Whatever you got, hurt you bad."
"Apparently."
"So, continue."
"I got a book as a gift, an old one, and a plushy of you."
"Plushy?"
"A doll. It was a gift from my friend, something to comfort me when she could not."
"And Icon."
"I suppose that works."
"All right, you are absolutely getting on my nerves! Your mood is glum, you summon me and then practically ignore me, and now you are beginning to make the aura of the room thick and gloomy. WHY?!"
"I'm sorry."
"That's not good enough! I want an answer!"
"I'm sorry, I have none that I can give"
"Can . . . When did I ever give you the impression of having a choice?"
"Look, yelling at me has long since stopped affecting me, and physical punishment is just as useless. I fear that the only answer I can give you, you won't understand."
"Tell me, and let me be the judge of that."
"I guess the best way to describe me is by my nickname."
"And that is?"
"The Ice Princess. Look at me Sesshoumaru, time has been frozen for me long ago; I am like a mirror reflecting false illusions. I am broken, through and through. So, I no longer fight, I am too tired."
"Life is what you make it."
"Mine ended long ago; just no one told my body so."
Pulling the book from the nightstand, Sesshoumaru handed it to her.
"Why, Sesshoumaru, what do you want me to do with this?"
"The spell that brought me here works both ways. This reality has poisoned you, so I will take you to mine. Then I shall be even with you for freeing me." Walking over to the hanyou doll, he sniffed at the air. Knocking the doll aside, he brought me the wooden box that the doll had been guarding. Opening the lid, he looked at me questioningly.
"Are these edible?"
"Yes, but why"
"Hold these in your hands and chant the spell you used to bring me here."
I did as directed, and when I was done, I looked at my last two éclairs.
*Nothing had changed,*
I thought as I put them down. Picking one of them up, Sesshoumaru ordered that I do the same.
"But I was saving them for a special occasion!" I protested.
"Eat them, woman."
"I have a name, you know."
"Oh, its about time I heard some original dialog out of you! What is it, human."
"Jena."
"Fine, Jena, now eat. When you are finished sleep, and when you awaken you shall be in the lands of my father."
Silently, I ate my éclair, realizing how truly pathetic I was. My first date had consisted of me being ordered around, while eating the last of my éclairs with someone who didn't even like me let alone love me.
As I closed my eyes, dreams flashed before me of enjoying those éclairs with someone who loved me, embraced me, and protected me. Sadly, the dreams started to move too fast as the familiar, cold tendrils of nothingness crushed the dreamscape light.
I awoke in a glade next to the youkai I had freed. Looking around, I saw the bushes move as a bizarre-looking thing stepped out of them.
"What the hell?"
I gasped, as the toad-like creature started yelling at me.
"What the hell have you done to Lord Sesshoumaru, you disgusting human!"
I was shocked that I could understand him. He started getting twice as agitated, by my lack of speech if nothing else.
"You miserable wench!"
He screamed as he swung his staff, hitting me in the face just below my left eye. I felt some type of hot liquid roll down my face.
*Blood.*
I realized, as I hadn't yet cried.
*I have to reason with him. I haven't hurt anyone.*
And besides, I was so tired. I couldn't have. . . their lives had more meaning.
"Please. . . whoever you are, I haven't done anything. . .please leave me. . ."
"Fucking miko wench! What have you done to him! What vile spell did you use to kill the Lord of the West?!"
I was completely confused now. . .
*This is a dream, my dream, aren't I supposed to be able to control things in my own dreams?*
I was saved from having to answer when a low growl alerted me to the fact that my companion was starting to come around. I started to walk over to him, but was stopped by none other than the toad thing, who was still yelling at me.
"Take one more step, human, and DIE!" the toad thing yelled.
Sighing, I knelt down where I stood and waited, watching and listening. The moaning became louder as the tiny toad thing kept trying to rouse Sesshoumaru.
"Lord Sesshoumaru. . . Lord Sesshoumaru, wake up. . .are you alive, sir?"
I heard the sound of a river near by, and deciding that I couldn't help Sesshy, I'd at least go and wash my face the blood was making me ill.
Sesshoumaru/Jaken
"What, Jaken."
Lord Sesshoumaru, you're alive! I thought that witch had killed you."
"Witch?"
"Yes, Sire, the one with the long golden hair. But I clubbed her good! Funny thing, though, she didn't even try to fight back, not even when she was bleeding. She just sat there, trying to tell me lies of how she didn't do it! But I showed her!"
"Jaken, your idiocy amazes me! That witch is no miko, she is simply a human girl from the future."
"But. . .But Sire, I saw you unconscious!"
"Jaken, I was simply sleeping off the effects of the spell used to bring me home." "Didn't anything about her seem strange nito you?"
"Other than the fact that she was as timid as a deer?"
"That's a start. . .if she was that timid, how the hell do you think she could have attacked me!"
"I. . .I beg forgiveness, my Lord!"
(Normal P.O.V)
After taking his frustrations out on the toad, Sesshoumaru headed toward the river where he was sure that he'd find her. As silently as possible, he sat down on the bank beside her.
"You know, Jena, not paying attention will get you killed."
"You're awake."
"You doubted me?" he asked, amazed.
I just sighed as we made our way back to camp.
As we sat by the fire with the roasting carcass of . . . some animal, the proud and proper Lord of the West was drooling like a ravenous puppy. Looking over at him and back to his version of dinner, I politely excused myself, telling him to dig in. He warned me not to go far. I nodded as I set off in search of that toad-like thing. I hoped he was okay, he hadn't meant to hurt me, and I did not hold a grudge against him for hurting me. I'd find him, and if he needed help then I would help him. If not I'd just as soon leave. All I could do was try. Try; the story of my life.
