A New Ally

Jena sat alone in her room. Sesshoumaru hated her; he had actually called her idiotic!

*Maybe I am, to think that someone as alive and free as him could love someone as hollow and dead as me. It was laughable,*

She thought as tears stung the corners of her eyes. She let them come; he would never love her. That much was plain as day, and it hurt.

*But why? Why should this hurt so much? Hell, I've been threw worse than this and have been called far worse in my life than idiotic so why now did this hurt so much.*

Sighing, she flopped down on her bed, as the images of the night ran through her head, of how she wound up here. But the one image stood out it was the one of Sesshie dressed up for her with a small smile on his face. That image, she vowed to remember for the rest of her days.

Suddenly, there was a soft yet firm knock at the door.

`Dammit, Sesshoumaru, now is not the time!' She was tempted to ignore it, however, the knock came again.

*Well, so much for them going away.*

"Come in."

I said as the door opened to reveal a man as tall as Sesshoumaru, but much older. His face was careworn and kind. His eyes were the same amber color as Sesshoumaru's, but there was something about him that seemed to make you feel calm in his presence, even somewhat peaceful. He bowed politely to me before he spoke.

"You, young lady, must be Jena."

This was so strange; suddenly I've gone from being a person nearly on the edge of despair and suicide, to Alice as she fell down the rabbit hole into Wonderland.

"Yes, sir, my name is Jena… Jena Du'Long."

He nodded.

"Well, Jena, I would like to welcome you to my home."

*My dear, you do look pale.* He thought .

Why don't you and I have a seat and we can get to know one another."

Part of me wanted to faint, this was just too much. . .and the other part was wondering why I hadn't fainted yet.

"Ex. . .excuse me, Sir, but I. . .uhhh. . . that is. . could you please tell me your name?"

"Certainly, child, my name is InuTaisho, Emperor of the Western Lands and Sesshoumaru's Father."

I nodded, feeling the blood rush out of my face.

"Thank you, Sir."

I said, apparently a bit too quietly for his taste.

"Come, child, there is no reason for such fear. No one shall harm you while you are under my roof."

I nodded, trying to force my body to relax, and failing miserably at it.

"So, child, tell me about yourself."

"What do you want to know?"

"Whatever you are willing to tell will be a good place to start."

"Okay, well, I have already told you my name. What else?"

"How about where you are form?" he asked, smiling at the girl.

*Why the heck aren't I nervous?! Hell, it seems impossible to fear him. I wonder why.*

"Well, I am from a place called the United States. . ."

"The states have united?"

"Oh, no, not like what you were thinking, this is on a completely different continent."

"Oh."

"But the town I live in is called Phoenix."

"Your town is named after a bird that rose from the ashes?"

"Yup."

I laughed at his confused look, I just couldn't help myself, he looked so funny. He smiled back.

"Well, now you've had your fun, little miss, tell me what the climate is like on the continent where you live?"

Now, Jena was confused. How was she supposed to answer this one? She didn't want to lie to him for fear of angering him, however, she also didn't want to have to spend eternity explaining it to him.

"Do you mean indoors or outdoors?"

"You mean there is a difference?"

I nodded.

"Very well, outdoors first. Well, the temperature varies between hotter than hell and colder than hell."

"With such extremes, how do your people survive?"

"Well, the reason we can live there is that we usually stay inside, and we can control the temperature inside the buildings."

"Incredible!"

"Tell me about your parents."

"Why are you being so kind to me, Sir?"

"You smell of loneliness; you could use a friend, am I right?"

"Y. . .Yes."

"Good. Now that that's settled, there is only one thing I ask of my friends."

"And that is?"

"Truth."

I nodded in agreement; not really caring about the consequences of making an agreement with out reading between the lines first.

"Now, you were saying, Jena?"

"Huh?"

"About your parents."

"Oh. Well, my mother's name is Galladrail, I don't know my father's real name, but I once heard my mom call him `Night Song'. I assumed it was her nickname for him."

"Strange."

"What is, Sir?"

"That you are around the same age as my son is in human years, and that you don't even know your own father's name. It's sad, really."

I felt tears well up in my eyes. I couldn't fight them off; he was making me feel things that I never wanted to feel again…that I had no right to feel again. Emotions that I had hoped died long ago with my father's death…I couldn't allow my self to feel this again…for feeling any thing for any one only ended …in pain and emptiness that would leave you wishing you could die.

"If this bothers you, we don't have to talk about it now." he said.

I felt as if a part of me that had lain dormant for such a long time was coming back to life, and it hurt like hell! For the first time in years there was nowhere to run, nowhere to hide, no emptiness to escape to, just his warm, compassionate eyes leading me on. I had to go on. I felt that if I didn't, a part of me that I had long since discarded for dead really would die forever.

"No!"

*I was quickly losing control over my warring emotions and I absolutely refused to fall to them before this was done! I had to go on…. The need was so strong that it was no longer an option or choice but as necessary as breathing.*

My father, the real one, died when I was three, he had light blonde hair and deep green eyes. He was kind and compassionate, to everyone. One day, I took very ill, I had a high fever. He went out to get me medicine. It was raining really hard. He and my mom had just had a huge fight. She watched him go, never taking her eyes off the car. I watched from the hallway, and she was mumbling something under her breath, over and over again. Once the car had left, she turned around and saw me; she only smiled as she led me back to my bed. I had a really bad feeling, I felt like a caged animal. I needed to get out, I just wanted to run until my energy was spent, something was wrong. I didn't know what, why, or even how I knew, but I knew! And I felt a part of my heart slowly bleeding to death. I fell to my bed, Feeling as though my life energy was being drained from me. I flopped down upon my bed and did the only thing I could do. Cry. My tears falling as hard as the nights rains.

The next thing I knew, was my mother telling me that my father was not coming back, that his brakes had failed and he had plummeted off of a precipice to his death. As she turned to leave the room, she smiled slightly, almost smirked, really, telling me that things would never be the same again! And she was right! Things would never be the same. My heart died that night.

It would be ten years before another man entered my mother's life. Reyouku. He was a perverted, and cruel, man."

"Jena… I had no idea. . . I'm so sorry."

"Why, Sir, should you feel sorry?"

I asked, my energy nearly spent. I felt dizzy, like I was going to pass out.

*NO! Not before I finish! Mr. InuTaisho was kind to me, and this was all he asked in return. Damn this feeble body, don't you DARE fail me now! *

"No one deserves to suffer torment like that, and at such a young age!"

"Reyouku was a very cruel man, both physically and mentally, but he wouldn't be there for long. One day, he angered my mother, and the same storm as before came again, where it had been a clear day only moments earlier. I felt the same feeling of urgency and entrapment. This time, I sat by my window and watched him head off into the rains knowing full well he would never return to this pace alive. Later, my mother came in again. Reyouku was dead, his body had been thrown from the car and into the lake. As she closed the door, a smile broke across my face. My tormentor was gone, and never to return. I was free! I laughed the entire night, only to have my laughter turn to tears once more; only this time, they weren't tears of mourning, they were tears of shame. I had the opportunity to warn him this time…but chose not to cause you see un like My father Reyouku came back in the house for a moment cause he forgot something. But I did nothing save for to watch him head off down the road…. to his inevitable death. And after hearing my mother's news I was rejoicing in his death, and the thoughts that had previously hailed as my declaration of freedom…. where nothing more than the means of my imprisonment. I had committed a terrible trespass…one that I will always pay for and am still paying to this date, but the worst part is that my entire family knows and they truly delight in reminding me of my sin."

I had gotten up at some point during my ramblings. Only now, I felt the costs of my confessions as body began to give way. But I didn't care anymore my body frozen by the window not having the strength to move. All I could do was stare up proud, and majestic, moon. It was beautiful and pure, like I had once been. I felt my legs falter an give way and before I had fallen more than a few inches he was at my side in an instant.

"Why did you catch me?

You heard what I did, I was laughing, full of joy, at the death of the only father I had ever known."

I yelled as he took me into his arms.

"Shhhhhhh." he said as he put a clawed finger to my mouth. "Hush now, child," he said as he laid me down on the bed before using his claws to rid my body of the tattered rag that had once been a dress , leaving me clad only in my slip.

His eyes caring and determined.

* I don't deserve his kindness….so why…why should he give it? Why should he care?*

"Your time to talk is over. For now, anyway. Jena, listen to me, you are a jewel amongst the reeds, and you been made to suffered far too cruel of a punishment for far too long! A sentence that you had absolutely no authority nor right to pass down,"

He said, as his hand came to rest upon my brow, and began to glow with a soft, blue light.

"I, InuTaisho, Emperor of all the Western Lands, do free your heart from its prison. Now sleep in peace, child."

I felt the same sense of peace from him as I had when he stood outside my door, but this feeling was a million times more powerful.

"T…thank…. y.. y…ou"

I breathed I was so weak…I couldn't fight it any more….and my body's demands would no loner be denied.

*I won't fight this time. . .I trust him, like I would if `Night Song' was still around.*

I thought, as I crashed down into a deep, dreamless, slumber.

InuTaisho's P.O.V.

I wanted to kill the wench that had injured her like this.

* Gods she was only a child…and a child had no right to bear a sentence that severe. Hell even the lowliest criminals in my lands don't suffer a punishment that severe! How the hell did she even survive it for so long so young!? Hells that kind of punishment would even bring one such as me to my knees!* The more I thought about the youngling in the next room the more I had to respect her…for it was that little slip of a girl that managed to survive a punishment so insidious that it would have sent most of her elders to commit suicide….before to long. You certainly full of mysteries young one…

But more important the one that concerns me was the fact that the woman in your story was able to summon and manipulate the elements.

*Strange, the only creatures that existed, powerful enough to use that brand of magic, were Nymphs and they were only supposed to exist in legends.*

I thought, as I heard the girls heartbeat slow and her breathing even out as my spell took effect.

*Even in sleep you try and fight that which you know you can't control.*

Nymphs were only legend, but if Jena's story was true, and I had no doubt in my mind that it was, for I would have known instantly if she had tried to lie to me. Then there must be at least one full Nymph in the world. Since her story was true, that would explain the light scent of ancient magic that clung to her. She was at least a half-Nymph herself. Obviously, that baka of a woman that she called `mother' had decided not to inform her of this fact.

*That would also explain the foreboding and entrapped feelings she felt before the death of those men…. Could that bitch have been drawing off her daughters energy's?*

I shook my head trying to clear it of those vile thoughts….no creature…no mater how cruel or sadistic…would do that to their own child….Would they?!*

*My son, what have you gotten yourself into? If my theory holds true, then even as a hanyou she is twice as strong as my most powerful miko, and is well your match, if not more.*

"This won't be dull, that's for sure!" he whispered as he left the youngling, to let get some much needed sleep.
