Prologue:
Fish nibbled at her toes as she propped her other foot up on a rock that sat on the bank of the creek. She giggled at them fleeing when she wiggled said digits. Turning her head up to the sky when a cloud passed under the sun she sighed blissfully. Her eyes glazed over as she let her daydreams take over. A loud squawking brought her crashing back to the real world. Rolling her eyes, she leaned over, cupped some water in her hands then splashed it on her propped up leg. She then grabbed the honeysuckle fragranced soap Kagome had given her and worked up a good lather on her leg from her ankle to just above her knee. After rinsing her hands she grabbed the contraption called a razor then proceeded to shave the hair from her leg like she had been taught. She could still hear her companion continuing his squawking rambling but she pushed it to the back of her mind as she concentrated on not cutting herself.
Gracefully he sat down in the shade of the tree. Removing his armor he placed it at his side then leaned back against the trunk. Is emotionless amber eyes scanned the are for any threats, stopping on the young woman as she rinsed her leg free of soap. He sighed mentally as she began to groom her other leg. As much as he didn't want to admit it, it couldn't be helped. She was no longer the helpless child he had picked up some seven years ago. No, she had grown into the beautiful young lady sitting before him. Lost in thought, he watched as the small pink grooming device made its way up her shapely leg. His eye continued upward even after it had been pulled away. Her usual orange kimono was hiked up passed her thighs; the light pink panties his half-brother's bitch had given her were peeking out for all the world to see. Closing her eyes, trying to block the image from his mind, his thoughts turned to said Miko. After several gifts given to his Rin by Kagome he had concluded that he absolutely loathed the priestess. The wench had turned his shy and reserved Rin into a temptress. Hearing his name being called out he snapped out of his thoughts, opened his eyes then focused them on her.
Rin let her foot fall into the water with the other as she turned to look at Sesshoumaru again. Worrying her bottom lip she tried to think of the best way to ask her question. Seeing him shift his shoulders slightly, the only sign he was getting agitated, she sighed then turned and looked to the fish swimming at her feet. `Best to just be out with it' she thought. “Sesshoumaru-sama, is it true that you do not like humans?”
Sesshoumaru sat in silence for a moment contemplating his answer. He knew if he worded it wrong the conversation would end in disaster. Thanks to what his half-brother's woman referred to as PMS and puberty she has been prone to have outbreaks of uncontrollable emotions. Casting his glance to the sky he steeled himself for a fit. “Humans are below me. While you are a special case, all others are filthy, ignorant and a waste of life.”
Rin dug her toes into the mud as tears came to her eyes. While she enjoyed being with what she considered her family, she was looking forward to starting a family of her own. She was already passed the age most women married and with how he felt about other humans she was beginning to think it wasn't meant to be. With her bottom lip quivering, she turned to look at her guardian. “Do you think you might find one you like? Because I was thinking…” She fidgeted slightly under his scrutinizing stare. “That maybe I could, you know, find a husband.”
He almost choked as the word `husband' left her lips. Regaining his composure he bit back a few choice words. Not even looking at her, trying to hide the hurt in his heart, he sighed once again. “Rin, go fetch our dinner. It's getting late.”
She choked back her sobs, pulled her feet from the water the stood. Her fists clenched at her sides as she turned to face him. “Would it honestly kill you to have some kind of emotions?” Silencing him as he opened his mouth to speak with a gesture of the hand, she continued. “No, I don't want to hear it. I will go `fetch' us dinner.” Before she walked out of the clearing she added, “Some days, I truly hate you!”
The venom from her words hung heavy in the air, even Jaken was rendered silent by the harshness of them. Sesshoumaru's heart clenched within his chest, something he was not used to. In all the times she had gotten mad at him she had never said such harsh words. Casting his glance towards the area she had exited, he sighed. He knew one day she would want to leave. He had prepared himself for it the best he could but now that she had brought it up he just couldn't let her go. `Hopefully with dinner she will forget about such nonsense.' With that thought he allowed himself to drift into a light slumber.
He woke several hours later to Jaken's rambling. Not really paying any attention to the little toad demon, he searched the clearing for his ward. `She should have been back by now.' He thought as he turned to his retainer. “Jaken, where is Rin?”
Squawking, he scrambled to a bow at his lord's feet. “Mi lord, that's what this lowly Jaken was trying to tell you. When she didn't return I went to look for her. I found her but…” He let his words trail off as his small frame began to tremble.
“Well, where is she?” Sesshoumaru's cold voice cut through the still evening air.
“Forgive me, mi lord, I couldn't carry her. I had to leave her where I found her.” Chancing a glance at his lord he noticed he was now alone in the clearing. Mumbling something about hating it when his lord does that, he took off in the direction he had found Rin.
Fear, another emotion he was not accustomed to, coursed its way through his veins as he sped towards the smell of his ward. The scent of sex and blood was thickly laced with her normal sweet scent of cherry blossoms and honeysuckle. His eyes bled red when he found her. Her clothes lay in a tattered disarray around her broken form. He could already see the small demons hovering over her, ready to take her soul from this world. His hand grabbed the hilt of the Tenseiga and he began to pull it from its sheath. A hand grabbing his pant's leg caused him to pause.
“Don't.” Her voice seemed to fail her as she coughed up blood. Wheezing she managed to continue. “Please, I don't want to live with this memory.” Looking away from her guardian as he kneeled down next to her tears began to gather in her eyes. “No man would want a broken woman such as myself anyway.”
Removing his pelt, Sesshoumaru laid it over her naked body. His eyes were flashing between crimson and gold as he struggled to remain calm. “What happened?” Silently he prayed his senses were not correct this one time. He sat in silence as she told him of how a group of men had ambushed her. How she had fought them like he had taught her. Then of how one had gotten behind her while two more came from the front. Being struck in the head with the hilt of a sword, she had lost. She explained how they then gagged her and each took their turn having their way with her, how they had beaten her with each thrust.
Filling her life coming to its end she reached up and gently touched his cheek. “I'm sorry; I didn't mean what I had said.” Seeing the confusion in his eyes she smiled. “I love you, Father.”
Tears pooled in his crimson eyes as her hand slipped from his face, falling next to her now lifeless body. “Jaken, take her body somewhere safe.”
“But mi lord…” His mouth snapped shut when his lord stood and turned his blood red eyes that promised death on him. “It will be done.” He watched as his lord disappeared from sight then set about figuring a way to remove Rin from where she was. After fifteen minutes of struggling to get her onto the small dragon demon, Aun, he heard terrifying screams of agony. The screams had continued as he had left the canopy of the forest. Shaking slightly with fear, Jaken looked off into the distance. `This can't be good.' Sighing he started for the den.
