Kagome had been gone for four days; far too long for Inu-Yasha's liking. He was beginning to worry. Days earlier, Kagome had stormed out of Kaede's village, furious with Inu-Yasha for being, as she put it, "an insensitive jerk who was not allowed to tell her what she could or couldn't do".

Inu-Yasha had seen Kagome with Koga. They had been talking together for nearly an hour. Inu-Yasha had been angry, yes, but he had snapped when he had heard Kagome laugh that special giggle that she reserved only for him. He would not and could not permit her to share that laugh with anyone but him. It was his and his alone.

The second Inu-Yasha heard Kagome giggle he had leapt from the tree where he'd been hiding and threw Koga away from Kagome. It had happened so quickly that he had been unable to stop himself. He latched onto Kagome's arm and had held her tightly, protectively, away from Koga. He knew, even as he snarled his threats and warnings at Koga that nothing had been going on. Kagome had merely been talking to him as if he were a friend of hers.

But Inu-Yasha could not think clearly when it came to Kagome. The beautiful young girl had stolen his heart. Not because she was like Kikyo, but for the exact opposite reason. She was everything Kikyo was not. She was strong where Kikyo was weak; she was warm and caring where Kikyo was cold and apathetic. He loved every detail of her beautiful personality. But his jealousy was uncontrollable. He could feel his human side depart from his mind when another male looked upon his love, Kagome.

And that was what had driven her away. If only she knew that he acted out of love for her, not hate for Koga. He would have to tell her soon. He could not bear to see her features contort in anger with him. He did not want to hide anymore. He had grown increasingly closer to the young girl as time passed. With each shard they regained, the more positive he became that he would use the finished jewel to forever protect Kagome.

But her absence concerned him. She had been mad at him before but she had never stayed away for so long. She knew as well as he that now was a dangerous time. Naraku was gaining power. His collection of Jewel Shards was beginning to rival that of Kagome and Inu-Yasha and if he was not defeated soon it would become nearly impossible. They could not afford to take a break.

That settled it. She must be in some kind of trouble, otherwise she'd have returned by now. He would have to go to her era to retrieve her.

Inu-Yasha landed swiftly and silently on the side of the well, staring into the shifting darkness. Looking over his shoulder to confirm that the lecher, Miroku, was not about, Inu-Yasha dropped gracefully into the well. He soon found himself staring up, not at a clear, unclouded sky but at the roof of the shrine now housing the sacred well. He bounded out of the well, the shrine and up to Kagome's second floor window. He stared into the small, white and rose room, searching for the girl who owned his heart. She was nowhere to be seen through the glass, now misted with his rapid breath.

He landed lightly outside the sliding, glass doors of the patio. Inching closer, Inu-Yasha inspected the home behind the glass. It was deserted. Nothing moved within the house; no life stirred behind the dark curtain of shadow playing across the room's interior.

"Kagome… where are you?" Inu-Yasha asked the empty room, frustrated at the absence of inhabitants. Inu-Yasha stood, coming out of the crouch he had maintained while sneaking round Kagome's home. He lifted his chin, sniffing the breezy air for the scent of blood. There was no blood but he did catch the smell of fear; not fear of danger, fear for a loved one's life… "What happened here Kagome?"

Kagome turned away from the window, wiping silent tears from her glittering, hazel eyes. It had been almost three days since her grandfather had collapsed on the stairs of her family's shrine. The paramedics had rushed in, lifting her grandfather onto a metal gurney and transferring him into the ambulance. Her mother had told her to go with her grandfather while she went to Sota's school to fetch him. It had taken almost two hours for her mother to return with her little brother. They had both been in tears upon their arrival and Kagome had been reluctant to ask what had taken them so long.

After six hours of waiting, the doctors had come out of the large, swinging doors, pulling Kagome's mother aside. Kagome had watched the terrible scene from her chair in the waiting room. At first her mother just looked confused. However, within seconds, her confusion turned into disbelief. Then she was sobbing into the doctor's shoulder. Kagome shivered at the sight of her mom crying so brokenly into the arms of the young doctor.

When her mother had returned to the waiting room she told Kagome what the doctor had told her. "Kagome… your grandfather is very sick. His heart is old and can't hold out much longer. The doctors have done all they can. Now, all we can do is wait and see."

Kagome had stopped breathing in the seconds it had taken her mother to break her heart. It was too hard to believe that Grandpa, her crazy old fool of a grandpa, was… dying… She refused to believe one word. She would never accept that he would soon be leaving her forever for the land of angels and spirits. Never. Never. Ever.

Inu-Yasha tracked the scent of Kagome's fear to the large, white-brick hospital. Her scent, mixed with sickness, grief, death, was too much for him to handle. He felt his heart contract painfully as he thought of all the terrible things Kagome might be suffering right now. Inu-Yasha dashed into the front entranceway, sniffing out Kagome and her family. He quickly found himself on the fourth floor, surrounded by frail, old, sick, dying patients. He raced toward the source of Kagome's sweet aroma.

He slowed his pace as he rounded the corner. He did not want to burst in on Kagome, especially if she was still angry with him. He stopped several short paces behind her, peering through the glass pane to where her grandfather lay. Immediately, he understood. He moved forward quietly.

"Kagome. I'm sorry. I'm sorry for acting like I did." He hadn't intended to apologize, but now that he had seen why she had not returned, his anger dissipated.

Inu-Yasha nearly cried out in surprise when, weeping, Kagome threw her arms around Inu-Yasha's neck. Regaining his composure, Inu-Yasha wrapped his arms comfortingly around Kagome, wanting to protect her from the terrible things he knew she was feeling.

"What…?" he started, indicating Grandpa with a flick of his glowing, amber eyes.

"Oh, Inu-Yasha!" Kagome wept harder, burying her face deeper into his chest. He immediately regretted his inquiry. The last thing he wanted to do was to cause Kagome any more pain. He shushed her sympathetically, hugging her closer to him. "Inu-Yasha… he's… he's so sick!" Kagome shook with suppressed sobs.

"Kagome… just… just let it out." Inu-Yasha closed his golden eyes as tears sprang to them, unbidden. His heart was breaking. Each sob or shiver of grief sent a dagger piercing through his heart. He could not see his Kagome like this. "Wait here, please. I'll be right back, I promise." Inu-Yasha hugged her tightly once more before departing to find the doctor in charge.

"You, doctor. Give the old man my blood." Inu-Yasha instructed the doctor in charge of Grandpa's care.

"W-well, you need to-to have the-the same blood type as the-uh-recipient," stuttered the nervous physician. "We'd have to-um-test you first."

Losing all patience for the stammering doctor Inu-Yasha grabbed his shirt collar and pulled him closer to his snarling face. "Do as I say. Give the old man my blood," he repeated. Inu-Yasha held out his arm, expecting a knife or dagger to draw the blood. Instead, the doctor inserted a small needle into one of Inu-Yasha's veins, drawing several pints of blackened blood. Frightened, the young doctor hooked the demonic blood up to Grandpa's IV (intravenous), making sure that the blood was delivered to the sick man properly.

Inu-Yasha returned to Kagome's side, taking her back into his strong arms. This time it was her turn to ask, "What…?"

"It's going to be fine now. He'll be all right. I gave him some of my blood. Demons don't suffer mortal diseases because of special nutrients in our blood. My blood will cure him."

"Inu-Yasha, thank you!" Kagome choked out around the joyous tears flowing down her pale cheeks. "Thank you so much!" Kagome melted into Inu-Yasha's arms, feeling safe and protected by the handsome hanyou. "Inu-Yasha… I'm happy that you protect me."

Inu-Yasha blushed at Kagome's loving words. "Kagome, I love you. I'm sorry that I was jealous of Koga but I cannot stand the thought of him near you. You are mine, right?"

Kagome was taken aback by the bluntness in the hanyou's words. She had always suspected that he cared for her but she had never dared to think that he might actually love her. And she had certainly never thought that he would ever confess his feelings so openly to her. "I love you, too, Inu-Yasha. I love you so much. I was afraid that you didn't love me like that…" Kagome looked up uncertainly into Inu-Yasha's eyes and his heart almost broke when he saw the tears growing in her eyes once again.

"I have always loved you. I will always love you. Never leave me…" Inu-Yasha pulled the beautiful girl closer to him, enveloping her in his stalwart arms. He would never let her go…
