The sun rose, in the solemn skies beyond the tree where a lone figure perched on the highest branch of a sacred tree older, it seemed, than time itself. The ritual music played and the whine of the flute carried into the ears of this lonesome figure a tune not meant to pry or bother, but to show understanding, and to comfort during mourning…

The scent of burning flesh was upon the air, and a nostalgic aura hung over the village. Still, the figure betrayed no emotion. It was time to let this charade end. It was time to let things go. He couldn't stay secluded forever. He'd done so for so long until she came along and opened up the shell he hid within so constantly.

The voices of the mikos carried a wave of completeness over everything, and a neutral state emerged through the tears of those gathered around the flames consuming the body of a precious angel. Her soft wings spread as the fire engulfed them, the blood and white feather crackling and becoming dust in the midnight air. Stars seemed not to shine and a soft rain descended upon them. The drums picked up pace and the flute intoxicated the crowd, every eye fell closed and the figure stood.

Gracefully leaping from the high branch to the forest floor beneath him, a tall man walked past every bowed body, making his way to the girl being eaten by the flames. Not opening his eyes he sang the song she'd hummed to him every night since he first met her. He sang to her the song of truth. shinjitsu no uta

Long silver hair flew behind him in the wind and he reached out a clawed hand holding a soft pink glowing jewel by a beautiful necklace adorned with fangs and beads. A necklace of subduing beads. In a swift motion the jewel lay between two fangs and one hand reached in the fire rat Haori of the man who stood before this angel. A reflection of the light from the flames flashed upon the golden locket he wore around his neck and with a crackly voice, the hanyou finally spoke.

“I knew you from the deepest part of my very soul even before I knew your name. there's no way I'd forget you. Not ever…don't think that this is goodbye. Because our story isn't finished yet….”

Turning slightly, he whispered something gentle and sweet to the burning angel, and then slowly walked away. The last thing he said was, “From this day and on, no one, and I mean no one is to speak the name of the burning angel. No one must ever speak the name Kagome Higurashi ever again.”

Every miko gasped in a somewhat shocked manner but an unspoken vow had already been made. The fire crackled and a soft voice rang out among the mikos, villagers, and hanyou. A song drifted from the throat of the angel, sweet as honey as her scent of strawberries, lavender, and cream faded to the nose of her intended. The words echoed forever into his mind:

but the light
that I see
in your eyes
will burn there always
and will lead
me back to your side
by the love we have shared
before time…
my whole world
fades away,
but you stay…

Finally the urge to let go was too strong, and the hanyou shut his golden eyes tightly willing the emotions to stay hidden. Her voice was gone as soon as it had come, the hanyou stepped into the flames and touched her once more as the flames consumed them both. The moon shone bright, marking the day into history forever. However hidden a history it might be.

Her eyes opened and she spoke to him, whispering secrets of the years gone past, of pains and pleasures, happiness and sorrow, and finally the feelings she'd held back so long were on the tip of her lips. Her true unmasked feelings about to be revealed when suddenly the hanyou was grabbed from the source of the fire burning into his skin by a blur of ebony, violet, and pink. The howl of pure agonized longing sounded loud in the air as her form glowed light blue and finally disappeared in the soft flames.

Her last secret would have to remain just that; a secret, for a while longer…
