InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ But He's Such a Nice Guy ❯ Chapter 1
[ P - Pre-Teen ]
Here’s the first (and probably last) effort I’ve ever made to pay attention to word count. It’s exactly 500 words, not counting this part and the title. I’ve always liked both Hojo and Byakuya.
But He’s Such a Nice Guy
Everyone knew that Hojo was a nice guy. Everyone respected his place in the school community. Everyone could see that while he made the highest marks in his class, and was ranked number one, he really didn’t have a clue about personal relationships.
They all looked at how he kept hanging around Kagome, even though she never gave him any indication that she was the least bit interested in him. Even her friends had tried to talk her into going out with him, but when they had gone on a date, it had ended in disaster. It really didn’t matter to him. He was a nice guy, after all. As long as he was a presence in her life, it was enough for him.
They had known each other almost all their lives. They had grown up in the same neighborhood together, started school together, and grieved together when her father had died. The fact that he had been there for her at a time like that was an added bonus to his nice guy image, and something that he had taken full advantage of.
He could still remember how she had laid her small head against his chest, and sobbed all her grief onto his shirt. He’d done what was expected of him, and let her divest herself of all her tears, then he’d comforted her with just the right words. Nice guys always knew the right words.
He wasn’t sure when the realization of his memories had become clear to him. It had been a gradual awakening. Over time, the memories of a more primitive and magical life had awakened within his mind.
When Kagome had started missing school in the ninth grade he hadn’t been surprised. He’d smiled to himself, knowing the real reasons behind her absences. He didn’t know if he would have been classified as a reincarnation or a soul rebirth, but he’d done battle with the girl, before. He’d been the one to send her into the hell of the jewel. He’d been there while Naraku had fought the miko and her hanyou. He’d stood at the lake, beside Kanna, and watched as the pale girl had been destroyed.
He didn’t know why the fates had decided to put him in contact with her life again, but he didn’t doubt that in some small way he was supposed to make up for all the hardships he had brought to her. Perhaps the silly little gifts that he gave her had seemed frivolous to some, but if they helped others believe her stories of illnesses he was glad to give them.
When he’d heard that she had left home after graduation to get married, his heart had lifted. He could feel the rightness of the universe, again. He knew that she was where she was destined to be. She had returned to live with her hanyou in his time, and all would be right in their world. He could finally bid adieu to being Byakuya.
