It was over. It was all over. There was nothing she could do. Everyone was gone. Her aunt, uncle, all three cousins. Her mom, dad, baby brother. The whole village save her and a few elders and children. What was she going to do? At twelve years old she wasn't ready to be on her own yet. The black haired girl wondered through the burning remains of her home. Bodies, cold as night, lay around her. Her mother clutching her four month old brother. Her father bloodied with his sword in hand. Her uncle with his arms wrapped protactively around his wife and children. One elder neighbor was rounding up the wailing children with no one to look after them. The buildings blazed. Elder men who had surived rushed to put out the flames and save what they could. It was to much for the little girl. Her sight went black as she slumped to the ground.

This is for my peoples
Who just lost somebody
Your best friend, your baby
Your man or your lady
Put your hand way up high
We will never say bye
No, no, no

Mamas, daddies, sisters, brothers
Friends and cousins
This is for my peoples
Who lost their grandmothers
Lift your head to the sky
Cause we will never say bye

"Child, dear child, please wake," a smoothing voice called. The girl's gloden eyes that once had shone brighter than the stars fluttered and slowly opened. her unfixed gaze wondered over the room she was in. The dirt walls were bare save two shelves; one cotaining jars in all shapes and sizes, the other held different kinds of plants. The room was empty except for the bed she lay on and the old woman who stooped over her. The woman had a kind mothering face and spoke in smoothing whispers.

"I'm glad you are still with us. What is your name, Child?" the old woman asked. The girl looked around some more with curious eyes.

"Ayami," she replied weakly. Her tongue had dried and stuck to the roof of her mouth.

"I know who she is," an elderly man behind the woman called. Ayami hadn't noticed him before. "She is the daughter of the demon who once lived among us, the silver haired one. Her mother was the miko who traveled with him. They settled here when she found she was with child. She is that child," he continued.

"What do you mean once. Where is Father? Where is Mother and little Enchi?" Ayami asked almost becoming hysterical as she tried to rise from the bed. the old woman restrained her.

"Dear Ayami, please do not stress. Your body is weak still. Do you remember nothing of the attack?" the woman asked. Ayami callmed down.

"Attack?" she asked as she searched her memory. "The houses....they were ablaze!" she exclaimed in remembrance. "Mother, Father, Enchi, they were dead. As was Aunt, Uncle and my cousins. Only I survived!" Then she broke down and wept.

"Child, more villagers survived. We will rebuild. The elder villagers have taken in the orphaned children. I have taken over your care, Dear, so do not fret. I am Lady Sinshi," the old woman claimed as she soothed the crying Ayami.

"But I want my family, even Aunt and Uncle, even their annoying son, Jinu. I want my family," Ayami wailed. With that she fell back asleep.

I never knew I could hurt like this
And everyday life goes on I wish
I could talk to you for a while
Miss you but I try not to cry
As time goes by

And it's true that you've
Reached a better place
Still I'd give the world to see your face
And be right here next to you
But it's like you're gone too soon
Now the hardest thing to do is say
Bye bye

Two days later found Ayami at a funeral pyre which bore one body, her father. Being a demon, the villagers feared his spirit would try to reclaim the body and would not be able to rest. The feared if his soul returned to his body, the near mindless creature would wreck havoc on what was left of the village. They would burn his body to prevent this. Mikos from neighboring villages blessed the body with chants and sacred water willing his soul to rest easily. Soon it was time for the prye to be burned. As the torch hit the wooden structure, Ayami broke free of her caregiver and rushed to her father. Tear streamed down her face as she wailed over his body. She screamed as the flames licked her arms and face. Strong arms drug her away from the burning body. Burns and ash marred her beautiful face. Her eyes dulled to dark brown, their shine lost. The mikos looked her over washing what they could. The flames had marked her scorching the left half of her body. The mikos claimed she would live for months with these reminders of this day. Ayami didn't care. She had let them bury the rest of her family the day before and had been determined not to lose her father. The strong arms that pulled her from the body held her away from the flaming body. She turned her head and caught the eyes that belonged to the arms. It was a young man from the village who had travelled with the mikos to protect them. His face was also marred by scars but on his right side. Ayami swore she would never forget this man and would never forgive him for drawing her from her chance to be with her family, for making her live without them. When she was strong enough she would make him pay.
