Kagome sat there blankly looking out over the lake, her memory of Kikyo and Inuyasha embracing burned into her mind, she'd seen the love and passion between the miko and the inu-hanyou.

She'd been so scared to see that and she'd run. She'd run fast and hard, not even pausing to jump into the bone eater's well, more like just falling into it and running to the park, the place her father had always taken her after a bad day and having a little quiet time.

Tears began to roll down her cheeks before she was sobbing into her hands as she tried to rid herself of the pain, she just couldn't handle it anymore, Inuyasha had obviously made his choice and there was nothing that she could do to change his mind.

“Kagome?” she looked up to meet her curly haired friend's gaze. Yuka was in a pair of pants and grey shirt, she held a shopping bag and she had a worried look in her face before coming over and sitting down beside Kagome.

“Kagome, what's the matter?” she asked softly, Kagome began to cry before collapsing on Yuka's shoulder causing the girl to gasp in surprise before she was able to understand the words that Kagome were sobbing into her shoulder.

“He wants to be with her…I can't stop him!” Kagome sobbed, Yuka sighed, she understood now why Kagome was so upset, Kagome seemed to sense it because she pulled away and stood up before walking to the edge of the lake.

“I guess I should just let him go…after all he always feels so guilty whenever he goes to her…but he can't bring himself to stop seeing her…he loves her…I mean I am not a complete idiot!” Kagome said as her head dropped a little lower, her tears were now silently rolling down her cheeks.

“Kagome…you mean you're giving up on him?” she asked surprised at her friend's lack of determination to get the boy back. Kagome gave a small laugh before nodding and looking back at Yuka.

“What else can I do Yuka? He seems to love this other girl and I can't very well change the path his heart has taken can I?” she whispered dejectedly.

“Kagome…you said that this guy gets really overprotective of you around other guys…that he's always protecting you from dangers….he doesn't seem that bad of a guy…contrary to Eri's and Yume's belief that he is a complete dough head.” Yuka said with a small laugh.

“But he only does that because he's with me.” Kagome said softly. `And the fact that I am his precious jewel detector.'

“Kagome, no boy does that just because they're with you. Love is like a roller coaster…it has its ups and it has its downs…but you're letting the downs get in your way. It sounds like you've had some ups to me.

“Wasn't he the one that brought you that medicine that had you on your feet for the comprehension test? And didn't he help you get Sota and Hitomi together?” Yuka pointed out. Kagome nodded still not seeing the point.

“Kagome! You obviously love this guy…you can't just let him slip through those fingers of yours! I know you way better than that to let that happen! Now go after him!” Yuka said grabbing her friend by the shoulders.

Kagome smiled before hugging Yuka, she felt strange sharing her problems from the past with one of her friends in the future but somehow it made her feel a little more connected to both worlds.

“Hey Yuka, would you go out with Hojo this Saturday…tell him I have a cold…and that I'm already with someone.” Kagome called as she ran off, Yuka smiled before waving good bye and nodding before picking her bag up and leaving.

She waited for him on the well again, he came out into the moonlight with the same sober look he'd had on his face the first time they had gone through this, but Yuka's words were still burning in Kagome's mind and Kagome knew this would be the only time she would be brave enough to do this.

“Inuyasha…this seems familiar doesn't it? I went back to my time…and realized that no matter what I say I can't change your heart. But I can't change mine either, Inuyasha. Even though you might not accept it…I love you.” she whispered looking up into his startled eyes.

“Kagome…what can I say to that? I can't break my promise.” he whispered, Kagome sighed looking down the well, she already knew that.

“Inuyasha…I want to let you go…but you made me a promise.” she whispered. “Don't you remember? You promised you'd protect me. How can you do that if you are dead because of what you promised to Kikyo.”

“Kagome…I knew her before I knew you…” he whispered.

“And loved her before me…but Inuyasha…you are my first love and I understand that you won't be with me…but being with you is tearing me apart.” she whispered finally looking into his eyes.

“Kagome…I….” he hugged her as tightly as he dared and she wrapped her arms around his torso as they fell to their knees, tears falling from her eyes as he began to sniff around her neck almost desperately.

`Inuyasha…you will never be mine…I know that…but please know you will always possess me.' she thought as he started to kiss her neck and her eyes fell closed. She felt the tears become faster as his hand went up her shirt and encounter her bra.

He seemed to realize what had been happening and he moved to pull away before she grabbed his hand and held it in place where it now rested on her thigh, she looked up at him almost desperately wanting just this one thing.

“I will always be yours, Inuyasha.” she whispered leaning up and kissing him.

She fell to her knees holding her arms as it bled and the demon blew dust, she began to sob in terror, the demon had kidnapped her and she could still feel his touch burning into her skin, Miroku and Sango had saved her before anything had happened that went beyond touches.

But Inuyasha was with Kikyo again, that she knew, being his was all she could offer him and nothing more. She was his but he wasn't hers, she let Miroku help her up, his face was clouded with worry and she almost smiled as she realized he wasn't stroking her.

“Thank you, both of you…but I just want to take a bath alone and think.” she whispered, Miroku and Sango nodded.

“We'll watch guard.” Miroku offered before sitting down in front of a tree, Sango smiled and put an arm around Kagome giving her a small squeeze.

“He won't peek.” Sango said, Kagome nodded before heading to the springs and undressing, she walked into the water and looked into the water where her reflection stared back at her solemnly and she hit it in the face.

“I'm a mess….how did things ever become so confusing…when did I become so confused?” she whispered to herself looking up at the sky.

`Love is like a roller coaster…it has its ups and it has its downs.' Yuka's words echoed in Kagome's head and Kagome gave a small sob cradling her face in her hands, she felt two warm arms encircle her and felt the nose on her neck, but this time she couldn't handle it, she had to pull away.

“I can't do this…I thought….I thought that letting you have me would ease the pain…but its made it worse.” Kagome whispered dejectedly looking into the water and seeing her reflection, she watched as it flashed to Kikyo before returning to her face.

“Kagome…please…don't do this.” he whispered, then he smelled it, the demon that he had thought Sango and Miroku would kill with ease while he was gone had captured Kagome…he felt his eyes go wide as he smelt the demon's desire on Kagome.

He could smell it as clearly as he could smell Kagome's despair, it hadn't taken her, he thanked every god there was that his friends had made it in time to save her, he realized guiltily that he should have been there to save her but he hadn't.

“Inuyasha…I…” that's when she started to fall, deep into the water before Inuyasha caught her, she was crying and he felt his heart clench painfully, he had done this to her.

“Kagome…forgive me.” he whispered. `I want to be yours so badly…but I can't promise you that and you know I can't…I would give everything to be yours.' he thought as he hugged her desperately.

“Inuyasha…I don't know if I can…I just don't have the strength left anymore.” Kagome whispered softly, Inuyasha buried his nose against her neck moving towards where water met land, and where their clothes lay.

“Kagome…I want…I'm sorry.” he whispered softly, she hiccupped and he almost smiled, she would be able to pull through this…but could he go on knowing he was hurting her so terribly?

He wanted to be hers more than anything in the world and he knew to do that he had to break a promise and he couldn't do that to the resurrected priestess, he wouldn't do that to her. But Kagome needed him just as much if not more than Kikyo because she was not from his world, she didn't know what to expect around every turn.

“Inuyasha…take me home.” she ordered softly, pulling on her clothes, he followed suit and picked her up and ran off to the bone eater's well and let her fall through, he collapsed against the well and looked up into the night sky and said the one thing he knew he could never say to her.

“I love you, Kagome.” he whispered softly, the wind carried his words off into the night sky, where no one else except he could hear them.

* * * *

Kagome was back at the same spot that she had been almost four months earlier when Yuka had given her the advice not to give up on Inuyasha, she looked up as she heard a gasp, she smiled softly as she saw Hojo and Yuka were standing near her with their hands clasped tightly together.

“Hojo, would you go on without me? I'll meet you at the movies.” Yuka said, Hojo smiled and nodded before giving Kagome a comforting smile and walking off. Yuka sighed sitting down beside Kagome.

“I guess my advice didn't work out so well, huh?” Yuka asked softly, Kagome smiled wiping the tears away from her eyes, she couldn't let it get her down, she knew that but she couldn't forgive Inuyasha over and over again like she always had in the past.

“Yuka, I was able to go back to him…but he can't forget her, Kikyo that's her name. She isn't a bad person, she loves Inuyasha…maybe as much as I do…but I can't find it in my heart to let him go.” Kagome whispered.

“Set something free and it will come back to you if that's where its supposed to be. Or something like that I can't remember the poem exactly. I just know that if you let him go and its meant to be he will come back to you!” Yuka said patting Kagome on the shoulder.

“He can't come back Yuka….if he goes with her…he won't be able to return to me.” Kagome whispered as her friend left. “But the only way he can be free…is if I release him.”

Resigned to what she had to do Kagome stood up and slowly made her way to the shrine, she had to break her bonds with the Feudal Era with the only man that she could ever love. She had to set him free.

She stared at the well before taking a deep breath and jumping into the well, she fell and gulped back the tears as they started to form, she couldn't cry, she'd known at sometime that this would come. But she couldn't help but wish it had come later.

“Inuyasha!” she gasped as she climbed out of the well, he was standing there, his eyes holding muddled emotion that she really didn't know if she could bear to see in his eyes at the moment.

“Kagome.” he whispered, she looked away, unable to meet the eyes that she had learned to love so desperately, more than anything in her life.

“I have decided…I'm letting you go.” she walked up to him and pulled the rosary up over his head and looked at him sadly with eyes that reminded him way to much of Kikyo for his liking, he hated seeing her that way. Then her words sunk in.

“What?!” he cried as she turned he fell to his knees, his arms going around hers, she gasped, looking down at the head buried into her thigh, that's when she saw Inuyasha cry for the first time. He cried, he looked up at her as though begging her to stay.

Her resolve wavered before she stroked his cheek a smile finding it's way onto her own desperate face, she shook her head causing him to let out a choked sob, she touched the place where she had asked him to mark her.

“I will always belong to you, koinu, no one else shall have me.” she whispered, his arms went slack and she moved away from him, she heard him run away, she looked over her shoulder, she wanted to go to him.

She wanted to stay and be with him but she couldn't, she put one knee on the well and gasped as she heard a crashing sound come from within the Inuyasha no Mori. She ran towards the sound and stopped at the sight that met her eyes.

Inuyasha stood, tears in his eyes, with an angry look accompanying the tears, he was scowling at the trees, one already lay in the floor and Kagome watched as he attacked another tree, she put a hand to her mouth.

“Why are you still here?! Shouldn't you be back in that world of yours?” he growled, she turned her head away quickly as tears formed in her eyes again, why was she always crying around him now?

“Inuyasha…I am yours but you were never mine…don't you get it?! I'll always be by your side.” Kagome cried, she met Inuyasha's eyes, suddenly he was hugging her, she was desperately trying to get him to let her go.

“Let go!” she cried, he reluctantly let her go and stepped back, she looked up into his eyes and he felt his heart break he would never see those eyes again as long as he lived.

“How can I make you stay?” he asked softly as she began to walk away from him, she stopped before looking back at him.

“You can't.” she whispered softly, that's when he began to growl, and before he knew it he was shouting the one thing he'd never thought to say to her.

“KAGOME I LOVE YOU! DAMN IT, I CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT YOU!!!!!!!!!” he screamed, she gasped as his words pierced through her, she looked at him, standing among the trees that had been destroyed.

“Inuyasha?” she whispered, suddenly he was kissing her and she felt her heart start to soar.

“Kagome…I can't promise to always be there…I'm trying…the reason I'm not always there isn't because I'm with Kikyo, I am sometimes….but I'm trying to find a burial ground for her…I want to find a place to put her where she can be at rest.” he said softly.

“Inuyasha…oh, Inuyasha….” she whispered and then she felt it, the gaze of another, she looked over Inuyasha's shoulder and saw Kikyo standing there with her unemotional look on her face.

`No one can fault you for what you feel.' the priestess seemed to say inside her mind before she disappeared into souls, Kagome buried her head into Inuyasha's shoulders as she felt the tears return.

“I love you, Inuyasha…I will always love you.” Kagome whispered hugging him as tightly as she could before he said four words that meant the world to her.

“Can I be yours?” he whispered, she let out a sob before nodding and letting him love her.

She would never break the bond between Inuyasha and Kikyo, but she could heal the wounds that Inuyasha had received, she was his…and even though he wasn't hers…he wanted to be.

`He wants to be mine…and when Kikyo is finally put at rest…he will be.' Kagome thought as she fell asleep against his chest, wrapped in his fire rat cloak.
