Chapter 1: Lone Wolf
~*Flashback*~
The wind from her rage caused the bamboo blinds whip around as her presence was finally acknowledged by her creator.
“Naraku!” The furious Wind Sorceress yelled out.
“Kagura…so you came out of this alive.” Naraku calmly talked as he eyed his incarnation without fully turning toward her.
“Shut up!” Her master’s calm just infuriated her further as she ran forward several steps while yelling at him. “You tricked me, didn’t you?” She raised her left-hand pointer her finger at her creator in anger. “You never told me about the power of that Inuyasha’s sword!” Her hand dropped back down as her finished talking.
Standing, Naraku finial turned towards his incarnation. “The sword that cuts through the Wind Scar. I wondered just how powerful it was…but if you could make it back alive…I guess it wasn’t much of a sword.”
“So you did trick me? How dare you!” Her fan slipped out of her right sleeve, opening the deadly weapon as she raised it above her head. Without uttering a word, she slashed it across her body sending wind blades at her master and creator. Each blade flew thru the air cutting his kimono to shreds before ricocheting harmlessly off her creator before all but destroying the window and a rather large piece of wall behind her creator as he turned to observe the damage.
The ripped kimono slipped down his shoulders, revealing the same spider mark that marred her own flesh. For a few seconds both stood there silently before Naraku slowly turned with his right hand cupped in front of him. Kagura couldn’t help but gasp as his hand opened and the essence of her heart materialized right before her.
“T-that’s…!” Kagura managed to stutter before being cut off as Naraku’s hand roughly squeezed the precious object within his grasp as she reflexively placed her free hand over her chest as she withered in pain. Eye’s wide and unable to breath, the Wind Sorceress crumpled to the ground.
“Don’t forget, Kagura.” Her master calmly started. “Your heart is in my hands!”
“Damn!”
“It’s simple to turn you back into what you were. So, Kagura…do not forget. In essence…you were created from a part of me.”
~*End Flashback*~
“Kagura, because you took Tetsusaiga’s blows…” Her creator calmly explained as sat next to a window with his knees bent. To anyone who didn’t know him, they might have thought that he was simply relaxing as he enjoyed the view provided to him. However, she knew better as she listened to him continue. “I was able to see the power of his sword. Go now. Once more.” His head turned slightly as he glanced at her out of the corner of his eyes. “Already your older sister, Kanna, has been dispatched.”
With the memories of just a few hours previously still fresh in her mind Kagura chooses not to respond as she turned to leave, giving the new room a once over as she remembered how she had destroyed the last one in her rage.
“Wait.” Her outstretched hand froze. The bamboo screen covering the doorway inches out of reach and with-it freedom, if only fleeting and temporary. Then she heard it, the high frequency buzzing associated with Naraku’s Saimyosho, her hand fell to her side as she slowly turned.
There it was, a single Hell Wasp had entered the open window and landed on Naraku’s proffered finger, its wings buzzing every few seconds as it relayed its message to him. How she hated those bugs. Between them and her sisters mirror he could see and hear anything he wanted, and at least with Kanna’s mirror all he could do was see what was going on.
“Well, that’s an interesting development…” Her master’s voice interrupted her thoughts. “It seems the young ookami prince has been located.” That piqued her interests, after all the poison contained within the false jewel should have killed him. “Somehow the jewel in his arm was removed, however he’s still weak from its effects…”
Naraku trailed off, analyzing how he could use this information and while planning how it could aid in accomplishing his current plans. She shuttered as a evil smirk appeared on his face, the red eyes of her creator locking onto her own…
“Kagura, go after the prince. In his current condition he’ll be no match for you, even with the jewel shards.” She could help but swallow and nod as he continued. “Remove his jewel shards, then humiliate the cur, but under no circumstances are you to kill him. I want an example made out of him, one remembered by everyone is his pack and all other ookami demons. After all if their mighty ookami prince, who was aided by shards of the Sacred Jewel was defeated and disgraced then there’ll all cower in fear of me and my wrath.” She turned to leave, tired of his egotistical thoughts. “No ookami will ever think of crossing me…”
As soon as she had released the screen, her shoulders sagged as she backed into a nearby wall. ‘God how I hate him,’ Kagura thought to herself, her eyes closing as the back of her head fell against the wall. ‘Does his depravity have no limits,’ she shuttered in disgust at the lengths her master was willing to go to just to cause that much more suffering on his enemies. ‘Even worse, the bastard doesn’t even bother to dirty his own hands, he forces me to do all his dirty work.’
True she might have been “born” of his flesh, but she was still a sentient being. One, which unlike his earlier experiments, was self-aware and fully capable of independent thoughts and actions. ‘Kanna,’ she thought. Her sister had indeed come before her, the evidence was there in her sister’s lack of free will.
Opening her eyes Kagura stepped away from the wall as she started walking toward the nearest exit, deciding to put additional distance between her creator and herself. “I need some fresh air; I can’t stand breathing in all this miasma…” the Wind Sorceress mumbled to her self as her blood red eyes glanced back and forth as she passed numerous skeletons alone the way. The bones serving as nothing more than sad reminders of the castle’s previous occupants, most likely used as nothing more than pawns in one of Naraku’s schemes. Treated as nothing more than simple tools to aid in accomplishing one of his twisted plans, only to be discard and left to rot when they’d served their purpose.
However, she was under no allusions. Like everything else in Naraku’s eyes she was nothing more than a tool, one in which he’d use until he either tired of her or no longer had need. Then like these mortals, she knew that she’d be cast aside and discarded. Her only hope being that somehow someway she’d survive the whole ordeal.
‘Some day, some way, and somehow’ she thought as she emerged from the structure and flew off. ‘I’ll have my freedom…’

“I can’t they just left me there like that…” the lone figure rhetorically asked. “Sure Dog Turd I can see but my woman come on!” His shoulders and tail sagged as flashes of the recent battle flashed through his memory. “Still after repeatedly calling her a liar she still saved both my arm and my life…”
~*Flashback*~
He was absolutely horrified at the scene displayed before his bright cobalt eyes.
“Inuyasha! How could you be so cruel!?”
“Let me tell you one thing!” The half breed turned towards him “When I got here, your comrades had all been killed!”
‘Lies lies lies!’ “Shut up!” His self-control was beginning to break as his blood cried out for vengeance. “You’re covered head to toe in blood! You can’t lie to me!” ‘How could that murderer make such a denial’ He watched as the cur glanced at his blood covered hand, as if only then realizing that indeed have blood all over it.
“Kouga, you’re wrong!” The simple but sweet voice managed to pierce his consciousness just as he was about to attack. We came here looking for someone named Naraku!” ‘What is she talking about,’ his mind tried to make scenes of her words. “Then…!”
“Kagome?” He asked in confusion.
“When we got here, all the ookami-demons were lying here…” His ears must have been deceiving him. ‘She couldn’t have been trying to defend the mutt?’ “…but then they all came alive and…”
He couldn’t take anymore lies from either of them. “Kagome!” The outburst had startled her into silence. “Don’t try o protect such a guy!” He glanced back toward his nemesis. “You cur!” He couldn’t believe that Inuyasha would have sunk so low as to involve sweet Kagome in all this. “You cur! Dead when you got here?” He couldn’t help but close his eyes and shake his head in disbelief at the absolute absurdity of it all. “That’s bull!”
~*End Flashback*~
He’d attacked almost immediately after, the enhanced powers from the jewel shard in his arm allowing him to quickly overpower his opponent. ‘Not that he was really trying to fight back.’ Kouga sourly thought looking back at that stage in the battle. ‘Inu-kurdo only dodged most of my attacks.’ Each miss only infuriated him more; still his woman had once more tried to intervene.
~*Flashback*~
“Stop, Koga!” Her voice broke his concentration allowing the mutt to put some much needed distance between them. “Please! Listen to me! This is a trap! The one who killed your friends is not Inuyasha!”
“Shut up!” He couldn’t believe how she still dared lie to him. The evidence was all over the mutt, yet she continued to profess the half breeds innocence. “I only believe what I see with my own eyes!”
“Koga!”
~*End Flashback*~
She’d tried once last time to reason with him, but he’d simply ignored her. Only after he’d had his moment of victory was the truth revealed just before he’d collapsed from the poison what he’d learned was a fake jewel fragment. He’d thought that it was all over, never getting a chance to avenge his comrades. Somehow the mutt had come through, driving the Wind Sorceress away with a blast of his Wind Scar.
~*Flashback*~
“Kouga!” His heart skipped a beat as she yelled out his name and not the dog’s. “Are you all right?” She’d run over to his side, completely ignoring her companions as she checked on his health.
“The color in the skin is different.” The fox kit spoke, stating the obvious as he noted the horrendous blue and red discoloration of his skin spreading quickly up his arm. “The poison from the fake fragment is spreading!”
“What’ll we do!? We can’t let him die!” Kagome spoke to the fox before trying to touch the jewel only to be repelled by a strong barrier. “But we must do something quickly!” His heart warmed at his woman’s futile attempts to save him.
Summoning the last of his strength he managed to raise his head, locking his cerulean eyes with her. “Are you sure, Kagome? I tried to kill Inuyasha…”
“What are you saying?!” She fired back in absolute shock. “You were tricked by Naraku! Even Inuyasha has no desire to settle it like this.”
~*End Flashback*~
He hadn’t been so sure, especially after the mutt’s offer to chop his arm off. Still his woman had defended him, eventually coming up with the idea to use a sacred arrow. She’d charged it before jabbing it into the barrier, successfully penetrating it as she used her holy powers to force the poisoned shard out of his arm just before he’d passed out.
He’d evidently been abandoned there afterwards, lying near the crater for hours unconscious or unable to move as his body desperately fought the poison. Even with the power of the two jewel shards he barely had the energy to move as his body healed the physical damage from both the poisoned jewel as well as the fight with Inuyasha. He couldn’t help but look at his right arm, the wound still oozing blood as the sickly-looking blue was slowly receding.
‘What will they think…’ he debated. ‘What will my brothers and sisters think when they see me like this.’ He stepped off the path and over to a sturdy tree before sliding down the trunk as he sat. “I failed them… I failed not only to avenge my falling brethren, but I was almost killed in the process.” He closed his eyes as he let his head fall back against the tree, the feeling of ruff bark against his scalp somewhat soothing. “To think the mutt even saved my life…”
The wind suddenly picked up and changed direction and with it a new scent was carried within it. Kouga’s senses going haywire while he quickly scanned the small clearing, he had just entered…
~*~
Finding him had been easy enough. All she’d had to do was to follow the scattered blood trail the ookami left in his wake. Along the way she had been deterred after hearing a scream echo through the nearby forest, and after a quick investigation she’d been rewarded with a small shard of the Sacred Jewel. In fact it was little more than a fragment, minuscule in size to the few shards she’d seen. Still she’d kept the shard and the few other “useful” items she’d recovered after disposing the demon.
That had been when the Saimyosho had shown up, the single-minded insect buzzed around as it reminded her of her assignment. The remainder of the trip basically alternated from the insect directly guiding her with the bug doubling back every time she decided to travel at a different pace then the bug wanted. Of course, even after she’d spotted her quarry, the stupid insect had refused to leave, leaving her with little choice but to kill the stupid creature or risk losing the element of surprise, not that she even batted an eye as the bugs life came to a tragic but overall uneventful end.
Subtly changing the wind’s direction, she had flown ahead of the dingy ookami and landed softly in the branches of another tree just off the path. There she waited; sitting quietly with one leg dangling lazily off a sturdy branch high enough in canopy to conceal her from her prey while still affording her an almost unobstructed view of the dirt path he was walking on. Carefully keeping the air around, her as still as possible as the downtrodden ookami slowly came down the path. Closing her eyes her head rested against the ancient oak, enjoying a moment of peace and quiet before the coming storm.
Kagura almost laughed as the unaware ookami plopped down under the very same tree she was sitting in as she listened in on his conversation. Keeping her presence hidden had been exhausting but well worth it as she released her powers, watching in amusement as the ookami struggled to his feet looking for her.
“Yo…”
The female demon smirked as she slipped off the branch, spinning in mid air, and landing gracefully right in front of the shocked ookami demon. A strong gust of wind sending dirt flying as the Wind Sorceress used her powers to soften her landing. In reflex the ookami jumped backwards, simultaneously separating the two while at the same time raising his good arm to shield his face as his body was pelted by debris the wind had thrown his direction.
“Kagura!” Kouga growled out, his arm dropping as the wind died down and he got his first good look at his enemy.
“Ookami.” Was her short reply as she stood before her adversary, he relaxed poster belying just how strongly she was focused on her enemy’s every move.
“What the hell do you want,” the Ookami yelled. The lack of seriousness was grating on Kouga’s nerves, both of them knowing that he wasn’t currently in any sharp to resume the previously interrupted battle.
“You know exactly what I want, and we both know you’re in no condition to fight me.” Kagura opened her fan to reinforce her threat, “so just quietly give them up…” She paused to give the ookami’s body a once over, “or I’ll take more than just the shards in your legs.”
“You disgust me bitch!” Kouga growled out. “You’ll never get my jewel shards.” He smirked as he cracked his knuckles as he raised his left arm. “It was bad enough you deceived me into attacking Inuyasha, but the death of my comrades and brothers was unforgivable.” His eyes flashed red as his inner demon struggled to be released. “I will avenge them, and you will die.”
“Come now,” Kagura taunted. “No need to be so hostile. After all, those wolves choose to attack my master’s castle. All, I did was defend myself. Really, they were just pathetically week in the end and paid the price for their stupidity.”
That had been the last straw, the complete disregard of the lives she had taken broke the last of his restraints. Kouga’s eyes completely bleed red as he attacked.
Leaping at the demon, Kouga raised his left arm raised before bringing his claws downward in a diagonal arch as he attempted to shred his target to pieces. However, the swing was slow and clumsy, allowing the Wind Sorceress to easily sidestep the ookami’s claws. Spinning Kouga reversed directions, using his momentum he quickly slashed horizontally. The second swing again missed his target, but presented an opening his battle-hardened reflexes were quick to exploit.
Without thinking he sprung forward, attempting to thrust the claws of his right hand thru her chest. The sudden movement caused unbearable pain to shoot up his arm, the last strike fizzling out as he fought against the induced muscle spasms in his injured arm. ‘Damn…’ The ookami mentally cursed at himself, both for the weaknesses still present in his body and his own stupidity for even attempting such an attack with an injured limb.
Still the attack had had the desired effect, forcing Kagura to leap into the air as she was forced to dodge. Taken off guard for a second she had also overreacted, sending a strong gust of wind at the ookami as she used her powers to further propel her away from the perceived threat.
Laughing sarcastically as she landed, Kagura couldn’t help but continue taunting the ookami. “Come now Kouga, is that pathetic attack the best you can do.”
A growl exploded from the enraged demon leapt again, this time tapping into the power of his two jewel shards as he swung again. Kagura again evaded as Kouga’s claws found purchase, the tips snagging the loose folds on her Kimono. The attack shredded the fabric from the top left side of her breast down her entire left side, small welts of blood forming from where his nails had made contact with her skin.
“How’s that bitch!” Kouga yelled up at the Wind Demon, who had leaped into the air after narrowly escaping the ookami’s attack. Kouga’s eyes widened and the knowing smirk quickly vanished as he leaped, dodging to the right as the ground exploded from the impacts of several wind blades.
“Humph,” Kagura huffed out as she landed on a nearby tree branch as she fully opened her fan. “Dance of Blades!” The attack was completely unfocused as the wind blades were purposefully scattered, literally blanketing the entire area in ookami’s general direction with random destruction. Kouga grunted as he was forced to twist and turn as he barely avoided each attack; the almost continuous stream of wind blades being let loose making it nearly impossible to move let alone attack.
Kouga’s concentration waivered lightly, as his body quickly used up the adrenalin rush afforded at the start of the battle. The slight lack of focus caused the ookami to trip as he accidently stepped into a recently created impact crater, badly twisting his ankle as he fell. Ignoring the pain, Kouga quickly regained his footing as the attacks continued, at least until the quickly growing cloud of dirt and dust obscured all visibility.
The following silence was almost overwhelming, the only sounds coming from small pebbles and stones as they fell back to earth from the last few blades of Kagura’s attack. Panting, Kouga was slightly bent over, his injured ankle madly throbbing from its continued use. A strong gust of wind suddenly stirred quickly blowing the billowing cloud of dust away. Kouga clenched his teeth together as more debris pelted his body, the wind fierce enough that even he was pushed back several feet.
Giving the newly revealed ookami an all-knowing smirk, she closed her fan, ending the strong continuous gusts of wind. “What’s the matter Kouga, I thought you were stronger than this…” True he has started the battle while still recovering from a severe injury, but as she looked the ookami over she could help but admire his agility as he had desperately dodged each attack. Still from what she could see all the fighting was beginning to take its toll, numerous scratches littered his body from the number she’d already done on him. Lines of red were forming as blood welled up from several shallow cuts. ‘Still couldn’t dodge them all…’
~*~
Kouga, noticing her slight distraction, took off as he attempted to increase the distance between him and his opponent. Even using his enhanced speed, he had only managed to make it about a dozen or so feet before the ground just in front of him literally exploded creating a line of destruction as his escape path was blocked off. Forced to skid to a stop, he had moments to brace himself as a second salvo of wind blades hit mere feet in front of him, boxing him in as his alternate path of escape was cut off as well.
“Going somewhere, ookami?” Laughing at her opponent, Kagura couldn’t help but gloat as she asked the rhetorical question.
After having been stopped dead in his tracks, Kouga slowly turned around as he tried to project some small amount of confidence. “Sure am…” Locking eyes with the woman the ookami smirked. “Anywhere I can to get away from your stink!”
That might not have been the smartest choice of words, but his situation was obviously deteriorating to the point of hopelessness. Kagura’s face flushed red at ookami the insinuated, after all canines had superior senses of smell than any other creatures. The sky darkened as Kagura raised her fan across her body and launched her next attack. “Dance of the Dragon.”
‘Oooo…shit!’ Kouga barely had time to think as multiple tornadoes crashed into the ground all around him, each one ripping apart the ground as trees were completely uprooted and thrown thru the air as they converged on him from every direction. ‘No way can I get through them.’ His mind worked furiously trying to come up with something, anything that would get him out of this situation. Any avenue of escape was blocked, and knew that he obviously couldn’t remain where he was. Suddenly his mind clicked, as he smirked while launched himself at the Wind Sorceress and through the only open path he had. ‘Let’s see if she can handle multiple attacks at the same time…’
~*~
Again she was taken completely off guard, as she slammed the two nearest tornadoes together in a desperate attempt to cut off the ookami’s attack. For a few moments it even looked like she’d done it as the spiraling dust clouds merged, that was until Kouga popped out of it, having once more tapped into his jewel shards as he launched himself through the gap just as it completely closed as he rapidly closed in on his target.
‘Shit!’ Kagura had no choice but to release her attack as she took a defense stance. “Dance of Blades!”
Unlike last time, these blades were precisely aimed forcing the ookami to zigzag as he continued his charge. Still he kept coming, as the intensity of her attacks increased. At the last second Kouga was forced to jump over several blades, slowing him down just enough for the next salvo to cut off his attack. Undeterred and without missing a step, the ookami broke left as he made a straight line for the nearest trees.
‘I’m seriously going to maim that ookami.’ Kagura growled out in her head as the attacks continued. The strain from her constant attacks and the fact that the scrawny flew bitten ookami was still able to dodge each attack was really beginning to piss her off. Still, she couldn’t let the ookami escape as she changed her target as she once more attempted to block his route of escape.
Once more the ground exploded just inside the tree line, but unlike last time Kouga didn’t slow down. Instead, he forced the jewel’s power into his aching muscles and jumped straight at a nearby tree. Flipping in mid air, both feet hit the solid trunk as his knees bent as they absorbed his momentum. Without pause, he forced every ounce of power he could, out of both the jewel shards as well as his dwindling strength, into his legs and jumped.
The tree groaned under the combined forces, its outer bark buckling as small craters formed as the ookami used it as a spring board and completely reversed his path. Just after he managed to launch himself toward his target the tree exploded as wind blades tore through the ancient oak tree.
Kagura was momentarily stunned as she watched the ookami sprung toward her as he flexed his clawed hand, hatred and deadly intent burning thru his gaze. She had mere moments to launch one last despite and ineffective attack before the ookami was on her as she tried to dodge him.
This time she was too slow as his claws once more found their mark, ripping upwards through the branch she was standing on. The attack continued up through her leg and across her back as she twisted away. Clothing was shredded and flesh parted like a hot knife thru butter, still the attack had meant to decapitate her. But she had been just quick enough to avoid it, and as a consequence any vital organs that could have been hit instead had escaped unharmed because of the ookami’s single-minded focus.
Still Kagura hit the ground hard, rolling several times before using the momentum to spring back to her feet just as the ookami spring boarded back off another tree. This one farther away, giving her more time to react as she used her fan to block a kick that had been aimed at her face. She couldn’t help but grunt under the weight of the ookami as Kouga jumped strait into the air in an attempt to get behind her.
‘That’s it!’ Kagura screamed inside her head, ‘Playtime is over…’ Spinning around, she sent a strong gust of wind just as the ookami was about to land. The result being that Kouga misjudged the landing as he tumbled several times, severely reinjuring his sprained ankle.
“Dance of the Dragon!”
