~~~Last time~~~
The second man mimicked the first and each pulled out a leather wallet like object, only to flip up the flap and reveal polished golden badges.
“Under the Federal Association of Demon Slayers, Kagome Higurashi I place you under house arrest.”
~~~afterward~~~
Just by the mere expressions both women were struck dumb and deaf for a moment as they heard the prosecution. Kagome's jaw dropped in disbelief that she, a renowned scientist was being placed under house arrest. Sango too was astounded more so because Kagome didn't exactly have a `house' to be arrested in.
Jakotsu and Bankotsu both sheathed their badges and placed them back in their pockets, each looking nonchalant even though it was strictly protocol. His lengthy braid swayed with him as Bankotsu began roving the foyer with his eyes. Scrutinizing over every thing that could become a tool for his or an opponents advantage.
Jakotsu leaned against the door as he closed it behind him, the two women breaking from their stupors and glaring at the two supposed agents.
Kagome stomped her foot, childish as it may have been she felt like ranting at that particular moment.
“Now hold on just a minute you two!” she barked angrily storming her way up to Bankotsu who turned to face the enraged woman who if he had not been told otherwise might have mistook for a demon female.
“You two have no right to be in my friend's house for one so I'll ask you politely to leave. I did not request bodyguards of any sort yet everyone else seems to believe I'm completely weak and defenseless and that I can't protect myself just because I'm human either that or because of the little estrogen problem I have.” She vented as the man stepped backwards as she intentionally moved forward. Entirely exasperated she glared at the second guy who jolted upright standing instead of leaning while holding his hands in front of him, palms exposed as he smiled sheepishly.
It was at that moment Kagome realized the glossiness of his lips, not in the perverted way of course, she just noticed what looked like a clear sheen of lipstick or gloss applied to them.
Not many men did that…
“Now look lady it's not exactly volunteer work as it is orders. We got a call from the Shikon Genetics facility from the head honcho for special ops for a task on protecting his head scientist. He gave us your picture, updated info, the works. Honest if we hadn't gotten orders from our superiors to come here you'd be as free as a bird and as dead as a door knob because you're being targeted.”
He explained this and Bankotsu scowled at his older brother for being too informative, striding past the slowly deflating woman and punching his brother across the head.
Kagome scowled, her brow twitched as she the only person that would go to such an extreme for her safety came to mind. Hojo….
Mental note…kill your boss when you get the chance…
“You idiot! You're not supposed to give out information like that! Who knows who could be listening to us!” he reprimanded.
“Indeed, you might want to refrain from divulging your dispositions. I know a great many demons that would want your heads.”
The group turned, or looked up in Jakotsu's case, to the speaker who of course was standing idly in to doorway to the kitchen. By the mere expression on his face they could easily discern he had listened attentively to the conversation all the while keeping his presence masked.
His tail was hoisted inches off the ground and as he stared at the assembled a little fox demon hopped nimbly on his shoulder.
Bankotsu and Jakotsu blinked, eyes widened to a comical state that Sango ended up snickering at the two men who then turned horror-stricken to her. “Woman you allow the demons sanction into your home! What idiocy drove you to such a decision?” Jakotsu yelled as Kagome laughed weakly. She probably shouldn't tell them that they'd broken in and pretended to be her cat and a lamp….
Sango glared at them both as she stepped just well enough in the way of the demons and the slayers. “You have no right to question my comprehension in the matter, seeing as you both aren't exactly welcomed here.” She growled as she looked to Kagome. “Should we tell them?” she asked and Kagome wasn't sure exactly what her friend wanted to tell. So much had happened in the span of 48 hours that she didn't know what she wanted to let them know.
“Um let's talk together in the living room.” She suggested suddenly feeling the need to sit, as if she hadn't been sitting around the last two days…
Sango forced the two slayers into the next room, eyeing them as they eyed Miroku and Shippo. Sparks and tension were sure enough reverberating throughout the atmosphere, it was unmistakable. The living room was prepped and polished; the wood finishing on the floor shined brightly having been waxed the day before, the love seat situated next to the window, thin curtains drawn over the blare of the sun. The sofa in front of the love seat was drawn towards the coffee table that separated the two seating arrangements and each person took a seat.
Kagome and Sango opted to take the love seat, Miroku deciding to be wary while in the presence of the demon slayers, opted to sitting on the floor with Shippo hopping from his shoulder to Kagome. The two men being speculative but having no other reason to act upon their opinions sat rigidly on the sofa parallel from them while disdainfully glaring at the Tanuki and the kitsune.
“Now then, explain to us exactly why you have demons living freely in your home. We are here for your protection therefore we must eliminate any and all threats that are unjustified.” Bankotsu began as his gaze finally removed itself from the demon on the floor to Sango and Kagome.
Kagome's anxiety was slowly eating away at her mind and though she didn't necessarily show it outright, she began stroking Shippo's hair absently. Sango inhaled deeply, gathering in all the information she had received over the last few days after the incident at the apartment. Her hands were clasped in her lap as she finally brought her gaze to the two suspicious men.
“As you may have been informed Kagome's home was destroyed by a demon, and yes, we have concluded that it was targeting Kagome.” She began her voice low and devoid of emotion. Being a scientist had its benefits.
“Kagome's brother was severely injured and without a place to stay she came here and when we got here we found these two.” She said gesturing to the demons.
Kagome smiled weakly recalling the event, as humorous as it was now wasn't the time.
Bankotsu was lounging and Jakotsu was leaning his elbow on his knee, resting his chin on his knuckles. “That's all nice and well, but that doesn't answer the question on why they're here.” He said agitating both women on his insensitivity to their ordeal.
“Would you believe it if I told you they're my bodyguards as well?” Kagome growled in frustration watching the demeanors of the two alter immediately. Astounded at the indication that the demons were actually protecting these women instead of bewitching them obviously didn't bode well with them as Jakotsu nearly fell off the sofa.
“That's impossible! Demons are corrupted, antagonistic entities with the knowledge of bewitching the mind and ensnaring the senses! There is no way they are protecting you!” Bankotsu yelled.
Miroku, sitting silently closed his eyes, a strained smile on his face as his fists clenched and unclenched at the notation of his psychological limitations. A bead of sweat rolled down his face from the strain it too simply to restrain him mentally, physically was an entirely different matter.
“Indeed, we are her bodyguards, sent by a hanyou whose name I am not allowed to divulge-uh, it's rather uncomfortable as well was unorthodox for me to speak to you when you have a sword pointed at me…” Miroku said nervously as he soon found himself staring at the tip of Jakotsu's sword which he couldn't recall the man carrying on him. They were good.
The said man glared. “Like my little brother said, demons are vile cretins that deserve no pity.”
“Yes but it's us demons that were really victimized!” Shippo quipped gaining a disdainful glare from Bankotsu causing the little fox demon to deflate and cling to Kagome's sleeve.
“It's true though.” Kagome said hesitantly, breaking the concentration of the other four and bringing their gazes to her. “Some demons aren't what others convey them as. Some of them fit your description exactly, I'm not saying there isn't a vast majority that consumes their population and makes them the stereotypical beings we see them as in the news and in media propaganda. However, there are a few, not many but a few that are just victims in this situation, they didn't choose to become demons either by birth or the radiation they were exposed to them. It unethical to believe every one of them is out to destroy humanity, because in essence they are still human. It's like saying every human is evil. But that's not true now is it?”
They all hushed and listened to her words, her tone solemn and contemplative, heartfelt with experience and knowledge. In this short time of exposure, she had come to the deduction not everything was as it seemed, demons were as versatile as humans. In more ways then the ones conveyed to them.
Jakotsu was oddly attentive as well, seeing as his sarcastic demeanor had made him less then tolerable with the other, he was surprisingly mellow now. Retracting his sword he flopped down on the couch in a very un-agent fashion and placed the blade across his lap.
“Ya know, never actually thought about it that way.” He said contemplatively as Bankotsu too seemed to think her words over in his silence. Sango glanced approvingly to her best friend, placing a hand on her shoulder.
Miroku too smiled from his seat on the floor. “A sage could not have said it better.” He mused aloud before standing up. This movement brought both the other men out of their thoughts watching him carefully.
However they were surprised as Miroku bowed his head to them; the position in itself was a vulnerable one. This action once a formal greeting had now been seen as a hazard but now he displayed them the utmost respect and initially his neck.
“Our meeting was not the most savory but I'd like if both parties could act as civilly as Kagome has so wisely spoken.” He said this in a low respectful tone, Shippo jumping off of Kagome's lap to take his place by his master's side and bow his head as well.
This was a very convincing display and though they were still suspicious of their motives, they wouldn't kill them just yet. Bankotsu too rose but instead of showing the same amount of respect he walked out of the room. There was no doubt speculation in his brooding gaze as he walked into the foyer.
“I will withhold my judgment on you, but know this,” he turned to the two demons that had brought themselves up to their proper angles. “If I catch wind either of you are up to anything, I won't hesitate to spill your blood.” Spoken in the uncanny way a killer might the two were rigid and tense.
“I'm going to put up the necessary safety precautions around the house. Kagome, ” his eyes now on the raven haired woman. “House arrest means you are not allowed to leave the premise for any reason whatsoever. Anything you require will be delivered by Jakotsu or I, your sentence luckily is only two days so you won't have to put up with us all the time. However, another part of our contract as your bodyguards is to follow you until your serum is developed completely. Until then you are under our care, and if these two speak the truth, theirs as well.” He said taking a moment to analyze Shippo and Miroku a final time before leaving the house.
Miroku sighed but smiled in spite of himself, turning to the two women. “I'd say that meeting went rather well, don't you?” he asked.
However the meeting was about to go completely down hill and out a window as the ceiling seemed to rupture under the pressure of something crashing into it. But they'd soon find it was actually the wall that sent the tremors through every beam in the house.
Dust and plaster bits fell from the ceiling and dappled the ground with little white specks. The hanging light above shook and chimed as its parts bumped one another. Jakotsu jumped up from the sofa as Bankotsu barreled through the front door, half expecting it to be fully closed. This time when he entered, strapped to his back was a massive sword, resembling the fabled bastard swords of olden days.
He shot an accusing glare at Miroku who had jumped quickly to his feet and had made a leap for the stairs. “You!”
The monk cringed halting at the top of the stairs to look nervously back at the demon slayer whose glare spoke evil.
“You traitor! As soon as I leave the room you contact your friends, I knew demons couldn't be trusted now die!” He yelled as he charged, Miroku jumping the rest of the way up the staircase and just as he rounded the corner of the hall had to shield his eyes as the door to Sango and Kagome's room as the door flew open spilling dust and an unnatural wind through it.
“What the—” he exclaimed as he shielded his eyes reaching into his sleeve and pulling out a small object that looked like a stick that instantly transformed, lengthening into his staff, the golden rings chiming melodiously as they formed. Rushing into the room he raised the newly transformed weapon and moved to strike only for him to stop, staring in bemusement at the entity there.
Golden hair and bright emerald eyes stared back as a long serpentine tail curled luxuriously around his heels as he crouched. Miroku's gaze traveled from the demon to where a draft was emitting. Where the window had been there was now a gaping hole in the wall. Brick and woods fell from the opening, some dangling from whatever was connecting them together.
“Have you seen Inuyasha?” Ketsumaru asked as Miroku fell to his knees, sweat rolling down his face in torrents. “Ketsu-maru… do you have...any idea what you've done?” he asked the dragon demon as Bankotsu and Jakotsu reached the doorway and glared at the demons.
“Have you seen Inuyasha?” Ketsumaru asked again, straightening and flexing himself, hand absently dusting his head from the debris he'd caused.
“Demons! Your existence is worthless and now you shall meet you ends by my Banryu!” Bankotsu yelled as he leapt for the two, he raised his Banryu above his head, bringing it down to slice the two in one fatal stroke.
Ketsumaru was thoroughly unfazed by the act of aggression and without a second thought on Miroku's wellbeing jumped backwards and out of the massive fissure in the wall he'd created upon entering.
Miroku yelped as he scurried to the side avoiding the blade narrowly. Nerve racked he stared wide eyed at the end of the blade that was inches from the tip of his tail. Before he was even given a chance to regain himself something bright and white slithered into view, snaking through the air like a fork of lightning, again narrowly missing him but it was close enough to graze his cheek.
A thin slice had been created, a trickle of blood running down his cheek as he stared at the strange zigzag series of blade now embedded to the wall mere centimeters from his ear.
“You shall die here.” Bankotsu growled.
Kagome and Sango reached the stairs and watched the scene, Kagome suddenly thankful that her mother had decided to go and stay at the hospital for Souta's sake. Sango was more preoccupied with the utter destruction of her room, floor and wall…
Ketsumaru hovered in the air easily, not in the least effected by gravity, nor did he feel obligated to assist Miroku who was now cornered by the two weapons. However he was obligated to protect the idiotic hanyou and having assumed he'd be there he couldn't allow this demon, a connection to Inuyasha, to perish by the hands of mortals.
“I think not!” the entire feud was put on hold as everyone's eyes were suddenly on Sango. The brunette's head was lowered, eyes downcast and shadowed by her bangs. Her shoulder, no, her entire being trembled and if Kagome wasn't mistaken she would have sworn when her friend looked up there was death in them.
She waltzed into the demolished interior of her room, eyes settled on Bankotsu, Miroku, and Jakotsu. However even though she wasn't looking directly at him Ketsumaru was rigid and uncertain as if her gaze was on him as well.
Sango's expression was devoid of emotion, nothing but a stoic mask placed over her face as she stopped in front of Jakotsu who as he looked at the woman felt himself pale considerably.
Her hand reached for him and before he had a chance to evade she'd caught hold of his collar, dragging him closer to her.
“Hey, uh, look let's not be hasty now…” he laughed nervously as she raised a hand, balling it into a fist of merciless rage.
“Please not the face! Not the face!” Jakotsu yelped as he cringed. However there was no impact. Instead the fist was meant for the brother who hadn't expected this coming from a woman.
Bankotsu stumbled momentarily forgetting Miroku as he rubbed at his chin. The Tanuki wisely scurried towards the window to escape but Bankotsu was able to recover as quickly as he and once again raised his Banryu for a fatal strike. Thankfully, Miroku leapt through the window a just the right moment, he sailed through the air for a moment before his body was clouded by smoke.
Soon soaring through the sky was a red tailed hawk, super duper sized…
Miroku's transformation was flawless, the bright red tail of the demon bird flashed as he flapped massive wings to remain airborne. Bankotsu growled staring at the man now a bird.
“You will not escape me!” he yelled as he made a move to jump out the window. Only to be caught by the collar. He was able to glimpse the seething brunette before she hauled him off his feet, spinning rapidly and flinging him out the window.
“Brother!” Jakotsu yelled from his position on the floor, until he cowered as Sango turned her gaze back to him, walking uncannily slow towards him. Jakotsu went to his knees apologetically bowing, hands in front of him.
“Please! Please! We're sorry for the trouble we caused, don't hurt me please!” he scrambled to say as she bent to his level.
“You better be able to pay for the damage on my house because your asses are in serious trouble.”
Bankotsu sailed through the air and caught himself mid air, landing heavily on the back of the unprepared bird who screeched before plummeting to the ground with a pop.
The sound of their impacts could be heard from the second floor and Kagome rushed down the stairs with Sango following. Jakotsu however remained on the ground breathing heavily and shaking, this was why he avoided women…
Sango and Kagome burst through the front door staring off the porch at the three figures on the front lawn. Miroku was on his back looking rather dazed as Bankotsu found himself rubbing his hip where he'd landed. The Banryu was embedded in the ground and Shippo had taken to attempting to awaken the Tanuki demon.
“Woman you could have done had killed me! Throwing me out of a window like that!” he yelled heatedly at Sango who haughtily crossed her arms over her chest.
“Did you even consider that was the point?” she grumbled as he got to his feet Miroku finally woke as Shippo jumped up and down on his chest as if to revive him.
“It's alright Shippo,” he groaned as he made a move to sit up only to once again find himself staring at the tip of Bankotsu's Banryu.
“I am a human that hunts the hunters. I will never allow my prey to escape me.” He sneered as he moved to bring the sword down.
Sango watched in horror, limbs for some reason locked and preventing her from going to aid the demons. Kagome however was not immobilized and rushed forward, but the descent of the blade was swift and sure to reach Miroku before she could.
“Not every hunter is successful remember that human!”
From above Ketsumaru descended in a demonic rage, glowering emerald eyes piercing as he spiraled to the ground, both his blades drawn. Just before his feet touched the ground he swung. Bankotsu's blade had been inches from Miroku as it was so the width between the dragon's blades and the monk was profoundly small.
Miroku's eyes were wide as he felt the cold steel of Ketsumaru's blade on his nose; Shippo had rolled off his chest and had fainted beside him. “Cutting it a little close there aren't we?” he chuckled apprehensively as the blade was lifted allowing him to sit up.
Ketsumaru again wielded a blade in either hand, each crackling with demonic energy, seething for blood. Bankotsu had jumped away before his legs had been amputated, he now stared angrily at his new opponent who smirked wryly and dared to sheath one of his swords.
“I need only one sword for this fight, if that.” He muttered as Miroku picked himself and Shippo off the ground and out of the way.
Sango however wasn't about to let them demolish her lawn as well and she stormed over towards the two combatants each having done a considerably, and hefty amount of damage to her home.
Just before she was about to say something to them the faint but audible sound of sirens filled the air and they all simultaneously turned towards the head of the street where flashing red and blue lights could easily be seen.
Shit.
Kagome and Sango watched as four police cars pulled up to the sidewalk, blocking the streets as well as the next sound of blaring sirens became thoroughly apparent. Sango felt embarrassment overcome her. The neighbors must have heard the clamor and had called the cops on them.
The first person to exit the car was Kismet surprisingly, the obsidian haired woman ran over to Kagome and Sango frantic and worried. Her face appeared slightly drawn evidently weary from something. She latched herself onto Kagome, her glasses nearly falling off in the process.
“Oh Kagome you have no idea how worried I've been! Work is terrible without you and Sango around. Hojo called an agency I'm not sure which and had them send over special demon slayers to protect you! I tried to talk him out of it honest but he wouldn't hear any of it!” she exclaimed, her words coming out on a single breath that was almost inhumanly possible.
Two more people exited the car each looking rather unnerved as they stared at the dragon demon who glared at them angrily for their interference.
“Well, well, well of all the demons I expected to be causing a ruckus in such a quiet neighborhood it's you two.” A baritone voice sounded from the driver's seat of the fourth vehicle as it exited.
Kagome felt the pit of her stomach drop away as she saw Kouga sashaying over to them. His teal eyes fixed on Miroku and Ketsumaru briefly before he completely disregarded them to continue towards Kagome.
Kismet sidestepped and moved to greet a stupefied Sango who evidently had just noticed the two men that had exited the cars along with Kouga all had brown tails swaying this way and that.
“Even in the turmoil you're still as radiant as ever Kagome.” Kouga greeted as he craned his gaze of his shoulder to the two men by the cars as the human police officers exited, hands automatically on their weapons. The wolf demon rolled his eyes at typical human anxiety before calling over to two men in particular.
“Ginta! Hakakku! Get your scrawny tails over here.”
The two men in question moved tentatively after Kouga. Both were dressed in not too formal suits that had been made specifically for their body structures, equipment that they could carry beneath it as well as the tail hole in the pants. Both men were paler then their commanding officer and both had beady black eyes that were attentive as well as uncertain.
The first had a white Mohawk that in any occupation would be seen as unprofessional. The second guy grayed hair but was not in the least bit older than his twenties and had a single blue, almost cobalt colored stripe in the middle of his hair.
“Kagome, do you know this guy?” Sango whispered, using her hand to shield her mouth from their view. Kagome unfortunately nodded meekly, a subtle smile on her face. “Yep, this is detective Kouga from the police station.
Kouga rubbed the back of his head as he stared over at Miroku and Ketsumaru still edgy and the dragon seemed revved to fight. “Actually I don't work there, I work in another portion of town but business is more or less the same. Will you put those away!” he barked at the humans who after receiving a forewarning glare from an overly agitated Ketsumaru had drawn their guns, further agitating the demon.
The humans looked skeptically at their leading officer, though they understood he himself was a demon and that he was supposedly on their side, that didn't make them any less frightened of him. Or the demons in front of them for that matter as it would seem.
“Ketsumaru put your weapons away, it's frightening the children.” Kouga growled, gaining a semi-glare/smirk from the golden haired dragon who did as he was asked and stood nonchalantly but he didn't assume such a position, his stance was still the same and aggressive.
Bankotsu stared at this scene with utter disbelief. Demons were taking over before his eyes! And the police officers, the human police officers were listening to them! His job was to slay demons and protect those who he was assigned. But in this case he couldn't kill any of them!
“Alright let me get the story here, Kagome would you mind telling me exactly what's been happening?” he asked in a sickly sweet way that made Sango bristle a bit. Miroku with a revived Shippo in his arms walked over to the wolf demons.
“Well if it isn't the leader of the wolf tribe, Kouga I had no idea you were into law enforcement.” He congratulated as Ketsumaru followed, but was blocked off as the shining end of the Banryu was placed in front of him.
“We're not finished.” He growled unrelentingly.
Surprisingly Ginta and Hakakku as timid as they seemed straightened and glared at Bankotsu.
“Oh yes you are! Now that Kouga is here this is his case!” Ginta chastised.
Bankotsu glared vehemently, truly having been placed in a position where he could not do his job, and more or less hobby.
“Don't worry I'm sure we can spar some other time.” Ketsumaru taunted as he moved around the blade and waltzed up to the gather group of demons.
Jakotsu having slunk out of the house without being noticed by Sango was now at his brother side, a reassuring hand placed on his arm.
Sango was used to being surrounded. Being a scientist sometime got you more attention then you wanted. But usually it was human attention she received. Never had she experienced being surrounded by demons and never in her life did she want to continue experiencing it. Kagome on the other hand wasn't in the least fazed that there were five demons all of which were armed; this wasn't counting Shippo that had the potential to become dangerous. Yet she seemed at an uncanny ease with this situation as she lead the group into the living room.
