Chapter 4
Inuyasha held a crying Kagome while sitting on her livingroom couch. She had her face buried in his chest and crying hysterically. He smoothed her hair while whispering comforting words into her ear. It had been an hour since the police showed up on her door step saying that her family had been in a car accident. They were on their way home from visiting a family friend, when a semi had popped its wheels causing the driver to lose control and slamming right into them. Her grandfather had died instantly, but her mother and brother had later died at the hospital. The doctors tried everything they could, but their injuries were to severe.
The cops were waiting out by the patrol car. The social worker was on their way to discuss where Kagome was going to live, since she was still under age. They would most likely have to put her in a home with teens her age.
A black porche pulled up right behind the patrol car. A man stepped out of it , he wore a dark suite with a dark blue tie. He had long black hair that was pulled into a low ponytail, he was very tall. He held in his hand a black leather suitcase. The police officers immediatley recognized the stranger as the social worker and greeted him right away.
"Hello Mr.Takahashi." one of the officers said. The man just nodded at them and walked up the path that led to the house. When he got to the front door he rang the doorbell.
Inuyasha, who was still holding on to Kagome, heared the doorbell and went to get up to answer it but Kagome tightened her grip on him, she held on as if she were gonna lose him to.
"Kagome, I'm just going to go answer the door, i'll be right back" he said softley trying to calm her.
she shook her head. He scooted closer to her and cupped her chin in his hand.
"Kagome, look at me" he said calmly. She slowly raised her head to look him in the eyes. Her eyes were red and puffy from crying to much.
"All i'm gonna do is go answer the door and i'll be right back, okay?"
she very slowly nodded her head.
he then bent down and gave her a quick soft kiss on the lips "okay" with that he stood and went to the door, when he go there he opened the door, his eyes went wide when he recognized who it was.
"S-Sesshomaru!" he said surprised
"Inuyasha? what are you doing here?" Sesshomaru said a little confused
"never mind what i'm doing here, what are you doing here?" he said a little angry
"I'm the social worker. Did you forget that that was my job?"
"Yea, actually I did, but never mind come in." he moved aside and let him walk in, he shut the door behind him.
Sesshomaru took a seat in the recliner across from the couch. Inuyasha came and sat down on the couch by Kagome, he put his arm around her shoulder and pulled her close, she then again buried face into his chest and began crying again. Sesshomaru saw this and had a bad feeling.
"you didn't answer my question little brother, what are you doing here?" he said starting to get a little miffed. Inuyasha started to panic, he had to come up with an excuse.
"um..Kagome called me earlier about her homework assignment, and asked if I could help her with it, so I came over, and the cops were here by the time I showed up." he said calmly.
Sesshomaru didn' t know whether he should belive it or not, But decided to leave it at that, he had to fine a place for Kagome to stay. He turned his attention to Kagome.
"Ms. Higurashi, i'm sorry for the loss of your family, I know how hard it must be to have to loss your only family, but what matters now is that we find you a place to stay for the time being." he said trying to make her understand. She nodded showing that she understood.
He pulled out a few papers and looked at them for a minute before speaking again. "So it says here that your birthday is in May, correct?" she nodded "so that makes you 17 then?" she nodded again looking down at the floor. He looked at the papers again then spoke. " It says here that you don't have any family here in the states, is that correct?" she shook her head and spoke "No, all the rest of my family still live in Japan." he nodded his head "I see, so you don't have anyone who lives near by? not even a family friend? Cause I don't really want to pull you out of this school, your doing so well." he said, she shool her "The only family friend we have lives up in Aspen" she said sadly.
Sesshomaru sighed a heavy sigh while shaking his head, he began putting the papers away and spoke as he did so. "Well Kagome, it seems that I have no choice but to either put you in a home with other teens, or find a family that will take temporarley until you graduate." he said.
Kagomes head quickly snapped up with her eyes wide " A-An orphanage?" she said scared
"not really, you'll be with other kids your age or like I said, we can find you a family who would take you in. I'm sorry but, these are the only choices you have."he said
Kagome looked liek she was about to cry again. Inuyasha noticed this and to do something, but what? ' She can't go live with some strange family, I won't allow it.' he thought to himself 'But what can I do?' he thought about for a minute. Then it hit him 'she can come live with me' he had to tell his brother.
"um.. Sesshomaru, can I talk to you in the kitchen for a moment?" he asked
Sesshomaru nodded and headed into the kitchen. When Inuyasha saw him dissapear, he bent down and kissed Kagome on the forehead, "i'll be right back" he said, she just nodded. He gave her a quick smile and headed into the kitchen. When he got in there, he saw Sesshomaru looking out the kitchen window with his hands in his pockets, he turned around when he heared him enter.
"what's this all about Inuyasha?" he asked annoyed that he had to talk to him, whenhe was trying to figure out the situation. 'All right, here goes' Inuyasha thought
"Let Kagome stay with me." he said suddenley. This certainley shocked Sesshomaru a bit.
"WHAT! NO!" he yelled
"Why not?"
"Because one, your not a family member or family friend, and two because your her teacher."
"So what if i'm not a family friend or family member, you were gonna put her with some family that she doesn't even know, and would feel uncomfertable with, what difference does that make?" he asked getting mad.
"Because they are a family with other kids her age whom she can hang with, not a single, lonely, bachelor who probably has a pile of porno sitting in the corner of his room for his own entertainment."
"Hey you got that wrong, thats all you." Sesshomaru crossed his arms across his chest and narrowed his eyes at him.
"What i'm saying is that, she would be better off with me because she's knows me, she trusts me, and she's comfterable around me, and i'm your brother so you won't have to much to worry about because you know me." he said. 'He has a point there' Sesshomaru thought
"And, you can come by and check up on her once a week, and if your not happy with how things are turning out, then you can take her." Inuyasha added.
Sesshomaru gave it one last thought before he decided. He closed his eyes and let out a sigh.
"Fine. But if I'm not happy with ho wit turns out, I will take her from you soo fast, it'll make your head spin." he said
"thats fine with me." Inuyasha said satisfied
"okay, lets go tell her"
They headed back into the living room and found Kagome looking at a picture of her family. It was one of them on vacation in the mountains, they all looked soo happy. She looked up when she heared them enter.
"Kagome, my brother has agreed to let you stay with him for a while, temporarley, if i'm satisfied with how things turn out, it might be permanent, but if i'm not satisfied, then i'll have to take you somewhere else, understand?" Sesshomaru said. She nodded. "okay, let get everthing settled"
They spent a couple of hours setting up all the arrangments for Kagome to get settled. By the time everything was set and Sesshomaru had left, it was 8:30 at night. Inuyasha had cleaned up the kitchen from the food that he had finally gotten Kagome to eat, she had refused earlier but Inuyasha finally convinced her to eat something. When he was done cleaning the kitchen, he went into the living room to find that Kagome had fallen asleep on the couch, the events from the day had exhausted her. He went over and picked her up bridal style, he then headed upstairs to her room.
Inuyasha carefully laid her down on her bed and pulled the covers up to her chin. He looked at her sleeping form, 'gods, she's so beautiful.' he thought. He brushed her hair out of her face and planted a kiss on her forehead. He headed towards her door and closed it behind him but stopped when he heared her say something.
"Inuyasha." she said softley
"Yea?"
"say here, with me." she said with her eyes still closed.
He flipped the switch to her roomlight and headed over to her bed. He kicked off his shoes and climbed into bed with her. She scooted over and laid her head on his chest. He buried his face into her hair and inhaled her scent. 'She smells so good' he thought. A few minutes later she fell back to sleep, and Inuyasha fallowed after. Her night was nothing but dreams about her family, and the accident.
~*~*~ THE NEXT MORNING~*~*~
The rays from the sun, was trying to peek through the shades of the closed window. The sun had risen only and hour earlier, so the air was still cool, but the rays were so warm. Kagome had been tossing and turning all night long, she had been dreaming of the car accident and the police showing up on her door step, bringing the tragic news.
She was right in the middle of her dream, when she saw lights from the semi coming straight towards her and the screaming of her family. She shot up from bed with sweat dripping down her face and panting heavley. Right beside her, she felt something move and a hand came up and touched her shoulders, causing her to turn around, and gasped at what she saw. There were a pair of dark violet eyes, looking at her with concern. "Kagome, are you okay?" Inuyasha asked softly.
Kagome just looked at him, stunned 'what is he doing in my bed?' she thought, then realized he had asked her a question, and quickley came back to reality. She flung herself at him and buried her face into his chest and cried. Inuyashas arms innediatley came up and wrapped around her.
"Oh Inuyasha, it was horrible" she said still crying into his shoulder. " I dream't about the car accident. and then the police coming to the door. I could hear them screaming, it was so terrible." she cried even harder into his shoulder.
Inuyasha smoothed her hair down to her back, and kept repeating this in atempt to try and calm her, it helped somewhat."shh, it's okay Kagome. everything will be fine"he asid softly. Her cries calmed down, so they were now sobs." I know, it's just that...It's hard to believe that they're gone" she said looking up at him with tearful eyes.
"I know it's hard, but trust me, i'll be by your side through out this whole thing. I'll never leave your side" he said buring his face into her hair, inhaling her scent, 'I love her scent' he thought. She looked back up to him, with hope in her eyes. "Promise?" she asked. Inuyasha looked right into her eyes, and gave her a big smile. "promise" he said softly, then leaned down and placed a soft kiss on her lips. After a moment of kissing, he was the first to pull away. "come on, I bet your hungrey, i'll make us some breakfast, how does that sound?" he asked climbing out of bed, then helped her up. "that sounds good."she said, with a hint of depression in her voice.
They sat in the kitchen eating pancakes and bacon, and deciding whether they should stay for another night or not. They decided that they would go to Inuyashas that, they cleaned up the kitchen and put away the dishes. Kagome put the last dish away in the cabinet and just...stood there. A thought came to her mind, a very sad thought. ' This'll be the last time I eat breakfast here, in this kitchen, in that chair, and, in this house.' a tear tried to make its way out of her eyes, but she quickly blinked it back, hoping that Inuyasha didn't see. Luckily for her, he didn't. She was about to go and start to clean the living room when the phone rang. Kagome walked over tto the kitchen wall and picked up the phone. "hello?....yes, this is she.....oh, hello.....it's okay.....yea, sure...okay..bye." "who was that?" Inuyasha asked walking up behind her. She turned around after hanging up and looked at him with sad eyes. "That was my parents lawyer. She said she wants to come over and discuss their will." "oh, okay. Maybe we should clean up then" he said placing his hand on her shoulder, rubbing it gently. She looked up at him with a half smile."okay"she said quietly.
They straightened up the living room and vaccumed the rug, after 20 minutes, the doorbell rang. "That must be her" Inuyasha said. He walked over to the door and opened it. At the door was a tall, thin woman with long brown hair that went to her waist tied in a braid, wearing a grey business suit with a matching skirt, and a leather brief case. She held out her hand to him and spoke, "Hi, I'm Carandra Moss, the Higurashi family lawyer." Inuyasha took her hand and shook it." I'm-" "Inuyasha Takahashi, I know, I'm good friends with your Brother Sesshomaru. He told me you would be here." Inuyasha was shocked on how she knew his brother. He quickley replied " Yes, he is my brother, um..come in" he said moving aside for her to enter. She walked in the door and towards the living room where Kagome was sitting on the couch. She quickley got up when she saw them both enter the living room. Carandra walked up to her with her hand out "Hi Kagome, I'm Carandra Moss, your families lawyer." Kagome shook her hand then pulled it away "Hi, please sit down. Would you like anything to drink?" " no thank you i'm fine, this shouldn't take long. I'll get this done as fast as I can and get out of her hair." She said with a smile. Kagome just nodded "First off, let me tell you how everything will be settled. Your parents came to me about 8 years ago, looking to make their will. They wanted to be prepared incase anything were to happen, it's a good thing they did this earlier or else we would have a BIG problem settling things."
She opened up her briefcase and pulled out a few papers and setted them on hte coffee table."Alright, lets discuss the money issue." She looked at a paper, and let out a big sigh. "well this is easy, your familes who;e account, goes to you, you get everysingle penny that your family has." Kagomes Eyes went big " What?" "yepp, your parents had originally split it for you and your brother, but since...... the incident, his half automatically goes to you."
"and how much money is that exactly?" Kagome asked a little nervous.
"$780,000.00"
"WHAT?" Kagome yelled. Inuyashas eyes went wide, and his mouth hung open.
"yepp"
"holy cow"
"yea, that is alot. Now that tha is out of the way, we just have to talk about the house and all their personal belongings."
"okay" Kagome said still shocked
She pulled out an other paper and began to examine it. She pulled out a folder and handed it to Kagome who looked at it confused. "Wgat is it?" she asked "the deed and the title to the house."
"the house?"
"yepp, it's yours'"
"mine?" she said a little above a whisper
"yours. Since the house and the shrine has been in your family for generations, your family owns it, and it was suppose to be passes down to you and your brother, it now belongs to you."
"well thats good. I was hoping I wouldn't have to lose the shrine"
"well, you didn't and its stuck with you for the rest of your life. Now everything else is yours to do what you want, everything in the house, but there is one thing" she said sadly
" this doesn't sound good" Inuyasha said
"it's not, since Kagome is not yet 18, she can not run the house or the shrine until she becomes of legal age, but don;t worry it's still yours, you just won't be able to live in it until your 18th birthday i'm sorry but thats the law, but don't worry it seems that you already have a place to stay and thats easy for everyone. Well it seems that i'm done here, if you have any questions don't hesitate to call." she packed up her briefcase and headed to the door, Kagome followed her." thank you, I will. Goodbye" "good day" she walked out the door and to her car. Kagome closed the door after seeing her pull away. She turned around only to have Inuyasha pull her into a quick hug. "see, I told you everything will be okay" he said to her. " I know, you were right. Now lets finish my packing and head to your house" she said "okay"

They had to call the phone, electricitey, and cable companys to turn everything off, since the house won't be in use for two months. By the time they had everything done it was 7:30 and they were really tired. Inuyasha had carried ger luggage to his car and started it up to warm it. Kagome stayed inside to take one last look at her home. The home where she was born, the home where she grew up in, and had all her memories in, and the home she hoped to have her wedding at, with her whole family there. She started to cry silently, and said her finale good bye " Good bye Mom, dad, souta, and grandpa. I'll miss you. I love you." with that she wiped her tears away with the back of her hand and turned around towards the door. She shut and locked the door, and walked towards teh car where Inuyasha was patiently waiting in. She got in and they took off down the street. She took one last look at her home, before silently crying herself to sleep.

' This'll be the last time I eat breakfast here, in this kitchen, in that chair, and, in this house.' a tear tried to make its way out of her eyes, but she quickly blinked it back, hoping that Inuyasha didn't see. Luckily for her, he didn't. She was about to go and start to clean the living room when the phone rang. Kagome walked over tto the kitchen wall and picked up the phone. "hello?....yes, this is she.....oh, hello.....it's okay.....yea, sure...okay..bye." "who was that?" Inuyasha asked walking up behind her. She turned around after hanging up and looked at him with sad eyes. "That was my parents lawyer. She said she wants to come over and discuss their will." "oh, okay. Maybe we should clean up then" he said placing his hand on her shoulder, rubbing it gently. She looked up at him with a half smile."okay"she said quietly.
They straightened up the living room and vaccumed the rug, after 20 minutes, the doorbell rang. "That must be her" Inuyasha said. He walked over to the door and opened it. At the door was a tall, thin woman with long brown hair that went to her waist tied in a braid, wearing a grey business suit with a matching skirt, and a leather brief case. She held out her hand to him and spoke, "Hi, I'm Carandra Moss, the Higurashi family lawyer." Inuyasha took her hand and shook it." I'm-" "Inuyasha Takahashi, I know, I'm good friends with your Brother Sesshomaru. He told me you would be here." Inuyasha was shocked on how she knew his brother. He quickley replied " Yes, he is my brother, um..come in" he said moving aside for her to enter. She walked in the door and towards the living room where Kagome was sitting on the couch. She quickley got up when she saw them both enter the living room. Carandra walked up to her with her hand out "Hi Kagome, I'm Carandra Moss, your families lawyer." Kagome shook her hand then pulled it away "Hi, please sit down. Would you like anything to drink?" " no thank you i'm fine, this shouldn't take long. I'll get this done as fast as I can and get out of her hair." She said with a smile. Kagome just nodded "First off, let me tell you how everything will be settled. Your parents came to me about 8 years ago, looking to make their will. They wanted to be prepared incase anything were to happen, it's a good thing they did this earlier or else we would have a BIG problem settling things."
She opened up her briefcase and pulled out a few papers and setted them on hte coffee table."Alright, lets discuss the money issue." She looked at a paper, and let out a big sigh. "well this is easy, your familes who;e account, goes to you, you get everysingle penny that your family has." Kagomes Eyes went big " What?" "yepp, your parents had originally split it for you and your brother, but since...... the incident, his half automatically goes to you."
"and how much money is that exactly?" Kagome asked a little nervous.
"$780,000.00"
"WHAT?" Kagome yelled. Inuyashas eyes went wide, and his mouth hung open.
"yepp"
"holy cow"
"yea, that is alot. Now that tha is out of the way, we just have to talk about the house and all their personal belongings."
"okay" Kagome said still shocked
She pulled out an other paper and began to examine it. She pulled out a folder and handed it to Kagome who looked at it confused. "Wgat is it?" she asked "the deed and the title to the house."
"the house?"
"yepp, it's yours'"
"mine?" she said a little above a whisper
"yours. Since the house and the shrine has been in your family for generations, your family owns it, and it was suppose to be passes down to you and your brother, it now belongs to you."
"well thats good. I was hoping I wouldn't have to lose the shrine"
"well, you didn't and its stuck with you for the rest of your life. Now everything else is yours to do what you want, everything in the house, but there is one thing" she said sadly
" this doesn't sound good" Inuyasha said
"it's not, since Kagome is not yet 18, she can not run the house or the shrine until she becomes of legal age, but don;t worry it's still yours, you just won't be able to live in it until your 18th birthday i'm sorry but thats the law, but don't worry it seems that you already have a place to stay and thats easy for everyone. Well it seems that i'm done here, if you have any questions don't hesitate to call." she packed up her briefcase and headed to the door, Kagome followed her." thank you, I will. Goodbye" "good day" she walked out the door and to her car. Kagome closed the door after seeing her pull away. She turned around only to have Inuyasha pull her into a quick hug. "see, I told you everything will be okay" he said to her. " I know, you were right. Now lets finish my packing and head to your house" she said "okay"
They cleaned up the rest of the house and packed all of the clothes that she would need. They had to call the phone, electricitey, and cable companys to turn everything off, since the house won't be in use for two months. By the time they had everything done it was 7:30 and they were really tired. Inuyasha had carried ger luggage to his car and started it up to warm it. Kagome stayed inside to take one last look at her home. The home where she was born, the home where she grew up in, and had all her memories in, and the home she hoped to have her wedding at, with her whole family there. She started to cry silently, and said her finale good bye " Good bye Mom, dad, souta, and grandpa. I'll miss you. I love you." with that she wiped her tears away with the back of her hand and turned around towards the door. She shut and locked the door, and walked towards teh car where Inuyasha was patiently waiting in. She got in and they took off down the street. She took one last look at her home, before silently crying herself to sleep.
