InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ Children of Light ❯ Chapter 7 ( Chapter 7 )
"Oh dear gods no" Kagome grumbled as she rolled over, attempting to hide her head under her pillow from the bright sunlight streaming through her window.
"My head" she continued to groan while clutching her forehead with her hands. "I'm never drinking again".
She was pulled out of her self-loathing by the unbelievably loud sound of the telephone ringing, which immediately caused her head to start pounding in agony. Letting out another strangled groan, she slowly moved towards the telephone, fearful of upsetting her already queasy stomach, with any abrupt movements.
She awkwardly reached for the phone, refusing to remove her head from under the dark, cool safety of her pillow, when she lost her grip on the handset and it crashed to the floor.
"Hang on a second!" she called out shakily to whoever was on the other end of the line, as she reluctantly pulled her head out from under the pillow, squinting in the bright light, as she slowly dragged the phone up by it's cord. "Hang on, I'm coming" she reassured the caller.
Finally managing to secure the phone in her hand, she spoke hoarsely into the telephone, "Hello?"
"Oh man Kagome, you sound like shit" Sango's cheery and amused voice sounded over the line.
"Yeah, thanks" Kagome cuddled herself under the covers a little more and replaced the pillow over her head to once again block out the light. "Ugh, I'm never drinking again" came a slightly muffled remark.
Sango giggled into the telephone, "Yeah right, how many times have we heard Aymi say that before?"
"Ugh" seemed to be the only intelligent response Kagome was capable of uttering.
"You okay Kag?" Sango was starting to get a little concerned.
"Yeah, I'm fine. But I think I'm still drunk. Is that even possible?" She asked her now amused friend who was laughing at her into the phone.
"I'm sure you just need a good greasy breakfast and then you'll be fine in no time".
Now that got a positive reaction from Kagome, whose whole body actually seemed to perk up a notch or two at the prospect of a greasy breakfast.
"Oh yum. That sounds good!" Kagome exclaimed happily into the phone. "Let's go".
"Sure, then we can swap stories".
"Yeah" Kagome started in an amused tone. "You can tell me where you and lover boy took off too and why you ditched me".
Kagome wasn't really upset. After all, she knew that Sango had tried talking to her in her drunken state, telling her how Miroku was going to take her home, but she really hadn't been paying all that much attention. She was just way too drunk. She guessed that Sango most likely had threatened Inu Yasha into making sure she got home safely.
"I didn't ditch you!" Sango was worried that Kagome would honestly think she had done such a thing. "I told Inu Yasha that if he didn't make sure he got you home safely, he wouldn't have to worry about meeting girls `cause he'd be short some equipment". The serious tone of her voice left no doubt that she would have indeed followed through on her threat.
That in turn made Kagome laugh. "Don't fret Sango, I'm just teasing you" Kagome reassured her. "I know you wouldn't ditch me and leave me all by my lonesome, even if I did get stuck with that grouchy Inu Yasha. It's a good thing that guys hot". She could hear Sango laughing into the telephone. "Anyways, give me a bit to wake up and wash off the liquor and smoke smell and we'll meet up".
"Sounds good. Bye". Sango replied disconnecting the line.
"Great" Kagome thought with an exasperated sigh as she replaced the phone in its cradle, only missing the one time. "Now how am I going to get out of bed without falling down?"
*********
Kagome looked up at the night sky and gave a slightly saddened sigh as she dropped her gaze to the floor of her balcony. She wrapped her arms tightly around her legs, in her regular spot on the bench. She thought back on her breakfast/lunch chat with Sango.

"Oh Kagome, it was so great! He walked me home and I only had to clobber him with the kitchen sink twice!" Sango grinned.
Kagome laughed lightly at her friends oh so typical behavior. "I'm glad to hear that Sango. After all, we don't want him to end up like the last one".
Kagome laughed a little harder at the fond memory of one particular incident with a totally sleezy guy that had tried to take a grab at Sango in a particularly lecherous place. The `I can get any woman I want' so called `Adonis' wasn't expecting to end up in the hospital for three days with a concussion and a couple of broken ribs. Instead of admitting to his macho friends that a girl had beat him up, he made up some wild gang war story. Sango was kind enough to let him keep his pride intact by not blowing the top on his story, but he wouldn't be caught dead within 20 miles of Sango after that day.
"Thank goodness for that" Sango admitted laughing. "I actually broke a nail that time".

Kagome gave a sigh as she leaned her back against the wall and allowed her legs to drop down into a crossed, Indian style seating position. Her hands lay gently across her lap, head tilted back, taking in the starry night sky. She couldn't help but ponder about the conversation of love and destines that she and Sango had gotten into after their little male bashing chat.
Sango wasn't too concerned about destiny and how it would play a roll in her life. She was happy taking life one day at a time and not really looking too much at the how's and why's of life. To Sango, life was just that, life. It was there, around you, just the way you saw it. You either took it or left it. What more could you want?
Kagome on the other hand had always felt that life was not as easily interpreted. After all, life was a challenge and full of infinite possibilities. She believed that every little thing you did affected something, somewhere, at every point in time. That the very air given off by the flapping of a butterfly's wing, moved atoms and molecules around it, that pushed onto other atoms and molecules. It was a domino effect, pushing, moving and causing effects the width and breadth the world over. Who knew, maybe the flapping of a butterfly's wing in Japan, would eventually affect the strength of wind that lifted a lost 5-dollar bill, right into the path of a hungry homeless person, living on the streets of California, moments before he could have passed by it, unnoticed.
She believed that with so many possibilities open to any given single act, a single moment in life, it would make sense to assume that life was a little more powerful, a little more mysterious and perhaps, a little more dark, then everyone thought it was. It would have to be, wouldn't it? Or everything would be a chaotic mess with that much power let loose to the world, uncontrolled, unorganized and unbalanced. That's where destiny and fate intervened. They kept the threads of life balanced and moving in a motion no one could ever hope to understand. There was so much more to life then what people saw or knew to be the truth in their own limited understanding.
Kagome couldn't explain why she felt the way she did. But it was obvious that not even her best friend could understand her at times.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~Flashback~*~*~*~*~*~*~
"Kagome, I don't understand you sometimes you know that?" an exasperated Sango replied, dropping her fork down next to her plate of half eaten scrambled eggs. "I mean, when are you going to get your head out of your books and start living your life, here, with the rest of us?"
Kagome's face twitched with a brief guilty expression before replying. "I am here Sango". To this, Sango just gave her friend an obvious unbelieving stare, but let Kagome continue without interrupting.
"It's just that sometimes, I think there's more out there then what we think. That there are larger, more exciting worlds, more exciting paths then what we've got". She said quietly, looking down, while moving her cheesy scrambled eggs around with her fork. Unsure if she had shared too much with her friend.
"But Kagome, how would you know about the world? You're barely a part of it".
Yup. Definitely said too much. Kagome sighed at the expected response, unperturbed by her friend's behavior. She knew Sango was only concerned about her. She was trying to be a good friend, and Kagome was grateful for that, even if she and Sango didn't see eye to eye all the time. All Kagome could do was smile inside at her friends concern as Sango continued with her ranting.
"I mean, how many times are you going to push everyone away from you? Look at Hojo, he was…ummm….okay, he was a really nice guy. A little on the dull and clueless side sure, but nice".
Kagome gave her friend a `give me a break, we are not going there' look. Yes, the subject of Hojo had been played and replayed time and time again. So many times in fact, that Kagome refused to speak about it at all anymore when her friends brought it up.
"Okay, well, what about Inu Yasha?" Sango was sure that those two would hit it off eventually. She had a feeling. And he wasn't anything like Hojo, and that in itself was a huge plus. "Sure he seems a little on the gruff side, but boy does that guy have a bod!"
Kagome didn't know how to respond. Inu Yasha was another mystery to her. He caused her heart and breath to skip in ways she never imagined possible. She had to admit, it was hard to want to keep your hands to yourself around a guy like him, and even his hard attitude didn't deter her, which shocked Kagome to no end. She had always been with sweet, nice guys. The type of guy you could take home to mom. The innocent boy. Inu Yasha was not an innocent boy. At least, not in his appearance and manners, and yet, Kagome was violently attracted to him. There was something about him that caused her to loose her senses. It was scary and freeing all at the same time.
"You just don't understand Sango" Kagome reluctantly replied. "I don't know how to explain it, but I feel like there's more to life, more to love, more to me. I can feel it. There just has to be".
~*~*~*~*~*~*~End Flashback~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Yup. Their conversation had taken a deep thoughtful turn, but Kagome was glad it had. She had needed to get those thoughts, those feelings, off her chest, or she was going to explode. Kagome looked up at the dark blue and white spotted sky. She couldn't help but wish to understand the deep-rooted sense in her being. That part that told her that life was so much more then night and day. More then getting up in the morning, going to work or school. More then settling down and having a family. Shouldn't there be some sense of adventure? Some real excitement?
"I wish I knew what was out there" she sighed to herself. "I wish I was someone special. I wish my life was something special".
Being adopted had left Kagome wishing for an identity. Something, someone, that could tell her who she was and why she was here. Someone who could show her where she came from and who would help show her how to get back. Back to that place where her heart, her soul, felt complete.
"I don't know who I am" she softly spoke. "I don't know where I belong. I just… I just want, I need to know that there's more then just this".
She hung her head, chin just touching her chest. Her desperate need echoed in her silent soliloquy more then evident. Tears rimmed the corners of her eyes as she wished desperately for life to carry her as far as her stories did. If only she could understand why she felt the way she did. Why did it always feel like a piece of her soul was missing? What had happened to her to cause such a rift inside her being? Why did she feel so lost, so empty, so alone?
"I want to feel… alive," she whispered so softly, the summer breeze that played with her hair had to strain to hear her.
Kagome closed her eyes when she was jolted from her thoughts by the sound of quiet movement off to her left. She jumped from her spot on the bench as a deep rich voice spoke from out of the shadows.
"Then let me show you"
