InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ Children of Light ❯ Chapter 12 -- The Light ( Chapter 12 )
Everything was so… so white. Why was everything so white? It was hard for Kagome to keep her eyes open. Where was she? How did she get here? All she remembered was falling asleep on the couch with Inu Yasha. They had been watching one of her favorite movies, "Ever After". That Prince Henry was such a babe! She and Sango must have watched that movie at least 135 times. Their best record to date was watching it three times, in a row, in one day. Usually that happened during those times in their lives when they were just sad and hating men. Granted, the first time they had ever even watched the movie, they actually thought the Prince was a bit ugly, and those clothes! Geez! She didn't even want to start thinking about that! It was just too funny, and they didn't leave a whole lot to the imagination. But after watching the movie so many times, she and Sango could sit there and repeat the whole movie by heart. And the Prince? Well damn it, that Prince just grew on you! Tight bulgy pants and all!
But now, now there was nothing. No movie, no couch. Heck, there wasn't even a floor she could readily identify. She couldn't feel anything around her either. Not wind, not energy, nothing. Since awakening to her past life, Kagome had been able to tap into her hidden powers, now that she was aware they were there, and how to use them. But she didn't use them often. They reminded her too much of her past life, of the loss in that life, her family and friends, regardless that they had found each other again. Her powers reminded her, that in the end, she was not enough to save them.
There was no sound, just an empty white nothing. It gave Kagome the chills and she shuddered as she wrapped her arms around herself. At least she could still feel her own body. That gave her a small measure of comfort.
"Hello?" she called out to the nothingness. There was no reply. Not even an echo. "Okay, this is getting creepy," she thought to herself, "am I dreaming or what? It doesn't feel like a dream." She pinched herself just to be sure.
"Ouch!" she yelped. "Well a lot of good that did," she mumbled as she rubbed her abused arm. Tired of seeing nothing and doing nothing, she began to walk. How she was walking, she wasn't quite sure, as she couldn't see solid ground beneath her, only the empty whiteness. She could see her feet, but she didn't really feel like she was standing on anything either. It was really starting to disorient her.
Unable to continue her aimless walk after a few minutes, due to the disorienting feelings that were whizzing around in her head, she plopped down, on whatever it was that was supporting her in this atmosphere, and wrapped her arms around her legs and lay her head on her knees.
"I must be dreaming. I wish I would wake up now." She blew a stray strand of hair from her face. Surprising herself with the calm she was feeling despite her current situation.
She wasn't sure how much time had passed, it felt like forever in the bright little world she found herself occupied in, when she began to sense a kind of vibration around her. Like the soft ripples given off by a pronged magnet when you smacked it against something metal. The vibrations began to get stronger as they crawled their way under her skin causing goose bumps to flush over her whole body.
She quickly stood, rubbing her arms, trying to soothe the goose flesh from her skin. Her heart sped up as the white of the area around her began to tremble and shiver. She could feel and sense the changes around her. See them in an odd haze, almost like she was trying to see through water.
Suddenly she felt something, like breath on her neck, and she whipped her head around to see who or what was behind her. "Who's there?" she called out. But there was no one.
The vibrations of the area began to throb strongly around her. She struggled to keep her breathing even as a suffocating panic began to rise in her throat, when suddenly the white room around her exploded into an unbearably bright light. She squinted her eyes and threw her hands up to shield her face.
There, on the horizon, far away from her, was a tiny bluish, purplish dot. It was all she could make out with the glare of the white light and the blurry vision. Just blue and purple, when she felt a presence gently touch the outer edges of her mind.
"Do not be frightened, child of light. We are here with you." The voice seemed to whisper in her head.
"Who… Who are you?" Kagome called out to the voice. The voice sounded like it was several different voices, talking at once, but melding together simultaneously to make a beautiful, unearthly sound, almost echoing in the background as it spoke.
"We are, who we are." The cryptic response did little to answer Kagome's question.
She gave a surprisingly Inu Yasha like snort. "Thanks, a lot of help that does me."
"We seek not to confuse thee, child of light." Kagome winced in embarrassment at having been heard. If her thoughts were so open and exposed to this entity as they seemed to be, she'd have to be careful.
"What do you want from me?" She called out to the voice, straining to see the blue and purple energy before her that was slowly getting closer, but not enough for her to make out anything more then a splotch of fuzzy color on the horizon. "And why don't you show yourself?" she called again, getting a little annoyed at the game this entity seemed to be playing with her.
"We are unable to show our true form to thee, as your mortal mind is unable to encompass that which we are. To do so would cause thee great pain."
Kagome felt a little relieved. Obviously, whatever this entity wanted from her, it didn't seem to want to hurt her.
"We have come, child of light, for you have called to us."
"Wh..what?" Kagome stuttered. "What do you mean? I didn't call anybody. I was trying to watch a movie with my mate. And why do you keep calling me `Child of Light'? What does that mean?" she yelled out to the ever-cryptic voice. Boy this was getting old fast.
"We have little time with thee left, child of light. We will speak what truths we may at this time. Thou are a child of light, as all beings are, whether they choose to recognize that light or not. For all beings of this world choose either the light or the dark. But all beings must possess some of each." The voice explained.
"I don't understand!" Kagome cried, instinctively taking a step toward the blue/purple haze on the horizon, which caused her to instantly regret her movement, as she collapsed to the floor, overwhelmed with the vibrations and light around her. She wasn't in pain, exactly. It felt like every part of her being was trying to come apart and yet come back together, at the same time. Almost like her essence, her soul, was being squeezed in on itself. Her own skin felt much too tight and confining to her liking. Lifting her head slightly, she noticed that as the blue/purple haze moved back slightly, the nauseous, overwhelming feelings subsided.
She heard the voice speak gently in her mind. "Child, thee are not strong enough to be near us long. We will speak the truths that we may at this time."
Kagome nodded. Doubtful that she was able to form any coherent thoughts at that point anyways.
"Remember child, in darkness lies light, just as in light, there lays a thread of darkness. Light can not know that it is light, unless there is darkness to mirror its essence. Just as darkness can not know that it is dark, unless there is light to illuminate its own truth."
Kagome's head reeled as she attempted to process what the being had just tried to explain to her. Her head felt like it was going to explode at any moment. She couldn't grasp what this entity was trying to tell her, but it sounded almost like it was trying to say, `you can't know what good is, unless you know what bad is'. Kagome waited, huddled on the ground, waiting for it to continue. Her head lowered, her hair cascaded around her like a curtain to keep the worst of the glare from her eyes.
"We come as you have called, as you have desired. As you have…wished…" the entity let this last word hang in the silence before continuing, its words getting fainter and farther from Kagome's thoughts.
"From another world, another life, thee have crossed the threads of light and of dark. The light has been reborn, and with it the dark. Thee must bring your power to bear. Learn the truth of the light, or the dark will consume thee again."
Just as partial knowledge and understanding sparked in Kagome's soul, and before she could question the being further, she felt the last threads of vibrations and light slipping from all around her.
"No, wait!" Kagome screamed, jumping to her feet. She ran futilely after the fading haze. "Wait, you have to tell me!" She cried out, running into the now dimming whiteness.
Kagome awoke screaming. The light had faded and she found herself looking up into two large, concerned, amber eyes.
"Inu… Yasha," she whispered, as she clutched his shirt in her hand and collapsed into unconsciousness against his chest. The last thing she was aware of was of two strong arms wrapping around her as a soothing rumble, that she instinctively knew to be her mates comforting growl, wrapped itself around her like a warm blanket. She fell into a soothing, deep sleep. A sleep where no empty white room could hurt her eyes, or tug at the painful memories buried in her soul.
******************
The sun pouring through the window began to nudge Kagome into wakefulness. She groaned as she turned in her semi wakefulness, instinctively reaching for the comfort and warmth of her mate's body. Her arms reached out across the bed to feel only the cool emptiness beside her.
"Inu Yasha?" She questioned quietly. She knew he was near, she could feel his presence through their bond, when suddenly he was beside her.
"Kagome!" he called out, as he quickly sat on the bed next to her and scooped her into his lap.
"Are you okay? How are you feeling?" Worry and concern was etched in his voice and clearly displayed in his eyes.
Kagome smiled warmly up at her mate. "I'm fine Inu Yasha." She turned her head up to lay a quick, chaste kiss on his lips. But as she started to pull away, he caught her lips with his own, pulling her back towards him. He nibbled at her bottom lip, asking for entrance, and she gratefully opened to him.
He probed her mouth with his tongue. Sliding his tongue along her teeth before he deepened the kiss, exploring all the crevices of her mouth deeply. Kagome gasped between kisses. She could feel his need for reassurance and comfort in his kiss and through their bond as he hungrily devoured her with his mouth. Kagome returned his kiss with her own deep, passionate embrace, as her own need for reassurance spilled over. She wrapped her arms around his neck, bringing him closer to her and deepening the kiss; the need for oxygen finally driving them to reluctantly pull apart. Panting hard and gasping for breath, they touched foreheads as they sought to regain their breaths and reassure and comfort each other.
"Don't ever scare me like that again." Inu Yasha finally managed to say when he had regained his breath.
"Inu Yasha?"
"You didn't wake up Kagome." Panic slowly etched its way back into his voice.
"What happened?" She pulled back a little so she could look into those deep golden pools that had stolen her heart so many lifetimes ago.
"We were watching that stupid movie of yours," Inu Yasha couldn't keep the resentment from his voice. He hated that movie. He hated the way Kagome always fawned over that damn ugly Prince, but he watched it with her to make her happy. Hell, he wasn't going to let her drool over some guy in a stupid movie like that unless he was there. That way he could take care of any arousing thoughts she might get by turning those thoughts towards him. After all, he was her mate! She was supposed to drool over him, and only him damn it! Sure he happened to have a tiny thing for Angelina Jolie, but that was different.
Kagome giggled at his irritation. She knew he got jealous every time she watched that movie, but he always insisted that he HAD to watch it with her. She didn't understand why since he just got upset every time they watched it together. She figured he most likely wanted to be there to steer any dirty thoughts she might get about the Prince, and the whole romantic mood of the movie, over his way. To reap the benefits of the awards, so to speak. Besides, she knew he had a thing for that actress Angelina something. But she didn't mind, seeing as how she got to use that information to her own advantage, on more then one occasion.
"Then you started dozing off," Inu Yasha continued, "when I felt you stiffen next to me all of a sudden. Your breathing had gotten shallow, and your heart rate slowed, and… and…" It was getting difficult for Inu Yasha to continue with his retelling of the events that had occurred the night before. He just couldn't finish saying what he had seen or more like felt last night. It had scared him. Scared him bad.
Kagome tried her best to reassure him. "It's okay Inu Yasha, I'm right here." She wrapped her arms around him in a tight hug. She felt his arms wrap around her tightly as he nuzzled his face into her neck, inhaling her scent deeply. Nothing soothed his tattered nerves like her scent did.
Calmed and able to continue with his story, he loosened his grip on her and pulled her away slightly to look her straight in the eyes.
"It was like you were gone."
"What do you mean?" Kagome couldn't understand what he was trying to say. Hadn't she been sitting on the couch next to him?
"I mean, you were there, physically, but at the same time you weren't. I could feel it through our bond. You, you're soul, it was… it was like it was far away somewhere. Somewhere else."
Now she understood the panic and concern he had been expressing in his body language, in his voice and through their connection. He had been holding the lifeless shell of his lover. The thought sent a cold shiver through her body.
"Then suddenly, you were back. I could feel your heart rate and breath speed up, and you just… you just felt like you again. Your spirit was there again. That's when you woke up screaming something, but I couldn't understand what you were saying. Then you just passed out. You've been asleep ever since."
Kagome cast her eyes down and nodded, attempting to take in everything he had told her. She was remembering the dream she had, had last night. Or was it a vision? Or something more? It was odd. She hadn't remembered it entirely when she awoke, but as Inu Yasha had told his version of what had happened last night, it had all started coming back to her.
"What happened Kagome?" Inu Yasha lifted her chin so she could look him in the eye.
"Tell me," he urged her.
Kagome nodded her head. Unable to bring the words she needed to her mouth at that moment, when a thought suddenly hit her.
"Where were you then? When I finally woke up, you weren't here." Kagome knew how overprotective of her Inu Yasha was. Whenever she had been hurt in the past, Inu Yasha stood watch over her like a guard dog. Not leaving her side for anything, unless it was to protect her.
"Damn it woman!" he barked gruffly as he looked away from her, "I had to take a piss!"
Kagome blushed ten shades of red as she glared at her crude mate. "Inu Yasha!" she yelled as she smacked his arm.
"What?!" he angrily replied as he turned to face her again. "It's the truth."
"Yeah, I know, but you don't have to be so crude about it." She smacked him on the arm again for good measure, but in a more playful manner.
"Keh," came the expected and usual response. But Kagome could see the small lift at the corner of his mouth that told her he wasn't really as annoyed with her as he was pretending to be.
"Now tell me what the hell happened," he demanded in a voice that said he was done playing.
"Well," Kagome moved to make herself more comfortable in her mates lap, and laid her head on his chest. She could feel him rest his chin on the top of her head as he tightened his grip around her.
"It's kind of hard to say."
