Chapter 33

“Sango! Look out behind you!” Miroku dives to the floor, just as a clawed hand swipes above his head.

“Don't worry about me Miroku, just watch yourself!” Sango jumps up to catch her returning boomerang. Twisting in the air, she maneuvers the deadly weapon in a sweeping arc to take out the moth like demon behind her. Its head rolls along the ground, its eyes still burning red as it continues to wail in its final death throws.

“Gross.” Another quick swipe with Hiraikotsu and the demon falls silent. Sango quickly looks behind her to see how Miroku is fairing. She smiles with pride as she watches his quick and agile form duck and jump, easily avoiding the many claws and tentacles reaching for him.

“My friends, I am sorry to have to end this party so soon, but you understand.” The score of demons around him look on befuddled as Miroku flips over their heads, unleashing a rainfall of charged offuda's that quickly turn the demons to ash.

“Show off.” Sango smiles as she calls over to him.

“Only for you sweet cheeks.” He grins happily as he watches the tint of red dust across Sango's face.

A loud roar heard in the distance, closer to the edge of the cliff where the ocean opened up, startles them to attention. They both recognize the roar instantly.

“Kouga!”

Miroku nods his head in agreement. “Let's go.”

They take off in pursuit of the wolf, but not before a swarm of flying serpent like demons spot their running forms along the open landscape. The demons take off in hot pursuit.

Miroku gestures behind him, “Looks like we got company.”

“Kouga's up ahead. I'll take care of these guys.”

Miroku quirks a questioning eyebrow at her. “Stop gawking and get going Miroku. I'll be fine.”

Struggling briefly with his inner thoughts, Miroku reluctantly nods and speeds on ahead to help out their friend. He knew that Sango was more then capable of taking care of herself, but still, he hated not being by her side.

“About damn time!” Kouga roars as another powerful kick sends the oni demon before him flying backwards and over the cliff to meet the fatal sharp rocks below.

Miroku grins. “Sorry man, got caught up. Didn't realize you got all the way out here.”

Kouga takes a quick breather as he crouches low to the ground, taking advantage of the remaining demon's uncertainty with the arrival of the monk. Dirt, sweat and blood smear Kouga's features and matt his unruly hair.

“I was trying to pinch them off, but it looks like they got me instead. It's a good thing I'm as fast as I am. If it'd been you, I'm sure you'd be nothing but a stain by now.”

Recognizing the friendly bantering for what it was, Miroku smiles at the wolf as he offers his hand to help him up. “Well then, better you then me right?”

Kouga grins as he takes the offered hand and heaves himself up. “Couldn't have said it better myself.”

Miroku suddenly rushes past the wolf, panic etched clearly across his face, as he uses his staff to cut a path through the dozen or so mismatched demons that try to suddenly attack.

“SANGO!!”

Kouga whips his head in Miroku's direction to see what had caused the monk so much distress. There in the distance was the unmistakable image of Sango battling the one remaining snake-like demon. This in itself was not the cause for the panic, but the fact that Sango was now riding atop the creature as they battled in the sky.

Kouga was immediately impressed with Sango's deft footwork as he watched her maintain her balance, while clinging to the creature at such dizzying heights. If she wasn't careful, the fall would kill her.

“Shit!” Miroku struggles to get past the remaining demons that seem intent on keeping him from reaching his intended target.

A shadow overhead causes Miroku to look up as he sees the agile form of Kouga sail over his head and land a distance a ways. Kouga roars as he begins to cut through the swarming demons with a speed born of pure need. Miroku nods his head and throws himself into the remaining thick of demons. The sooner they could get rid of these guys, the sooner he could get to Sango, who was slowly getting closer to the cliff's edge as she continued her chaotic ballet in the sky.

***********

What anyone would have thought about the scene presented before them would be anyone's guess.

A mass of wriggling bodies piled one on top of the other, legs intermingling with the body next to it. Teeth and incisors snapping at ferocious speeds as the mound of scaly bodies attempted to dig and fight their way through to the meal that awaited them below the heap of their frenzied comrades.

“AARRRGGGHHHH!!!” With a sudden explosion of light and pure force, the mass of squirming bodies explode from their center like a volcano spewing lava and rocks into the very sky above it, only to rain down fire and chaos on the unsuspecting forms below.

“Keh. Stupid spiders.” Inu Yasha quickly dusts himself off, taking a moment to peal a still twitching spider's leg from his mane of dusty hair. He watches, momentarily mesmerized, as the dismembered spider leg hanging from between his claws continues to twitch and twist of its own accord.

“Now that's just wrong.” Tossing the disturbing leg behind him, Inu Yasha quickly bolts in the direction of Kagome and the portal.

**********

Sango clings tightly to the snake demon as it continues to roar in distress at not being able to dislodge the tiny human or the human's ferocious weapon that kept biting into its hide every time the human swung at another part of its body. Having had more then enough of the surprisingly quick and agile human, the snake demon continues to twist in the sky in hopes of dislodging its unwelcome guest. Spying the cliffs edge beyond and the sharp rocks below, the demon makes for its obvious destination, avoiding the wolf demon and monk below who were making quick work of the few remaining demons on the ground.

While maintaining a firm grip on Hiraikotsu, Sango continues to cautiously climb her way up the snake demons body, knowing that she would need a more direct hit to take this one down, and fast! The cliff's edge was getting much too close for Sango's comfort.

“Just hold still for a minute!” Sango cries as she quickly raises her boomerang overhead, cutting deep into the demon's flesh.

The demon roars in pain as it continues to fly towards the open ocean. Sango meanwhile, takes advantage of the demon's distress as she continues to use Hiraikotsu as she would an ice pick, climbing a mountain. Except that mountains didn't usually try to eat you or intentionally toss you off a cliff.

Suddenly, the ocean was below her and Sango could clearly make out the outlines of the sharp hazardous rocks below. “Shit!” Releasing another agitated howl, the demon shoots straight up into the sky. Not expecting the sudden ascent, Sango momentarily looses her grip on the demon's hide.

“SANGO!!” Miroku screams in horror, unable to do anything as he watches Sango loose her grip on the demon. She begins to fall away from it when he sees her suddenly flip Hiraikotsu over her head, jamming the large boomerang into the snake's tail end right at the last second.

The snake demon roars in renewed pain as Sango continues to hold onto Hiraikotsu, the only thing now keeping her attached to the snake demon. But having had more then enough, the demon twists high above in the sky, flicking its tail in a powerful motion. The force, more then enough to finally dislodge the irritating human.

Sango cries out as she's flipped into the sky and suddenly dislodged from the snake. She doesn't need to look down to know that only the sharp rocks are awaiting her. Doing the only thing she can, Sango steels her nerves for the end.

“If I'm going down asshole, so are you!!” With a final heavy thrust and an added twist on her release, Sango sends Hiraikotsu sailing towards the seemingly satisfied demon as she continues to plummet towards the rocks. She grins with satisfaction as she sees Hiraikotsu slice right through the snake demons head, effectively decapitating it, as it falls like a stone towards the ocean and rocks. Hiraikotsu, however, doesn't return to her. At the last second, Sango's twist on her release of the weapon, ensured that it would sail towards the cliff instead, to land within Miroku's vicinity. At least he would have her weapon if they could recover nothing of her body.

In the distance she can hear Miroku's anguished cries. A tear slips free as she struggles to be strong. She can't look at him, not now. Better to not see the end coming. Sango closes her eyes as she feels the air swoosh past her in her quick descent, knowing there is nothing more she can do.

Miroku's heart momentarily stops beating in chest. He barely registers Hiraikotsu hitting the dirt a little ways away. Miroku had never felt so helpless or weak in his life, knowing he could do nothing but watch the love of his life plummet to her death.

“What the hell?”

Compelled by the surprised tone of Kouga's words, Miroku quickly turns his head to see what had caught the wolf demon's attention.

There on the horizon line, a large dark wolf was running straight towards the cliff's edge and Sango's quickly falling form. Both Miroku and Kouga were stunned into silence as they watched the wolf leap off the cliffs edge. But instead of falling to the rocks below, the wolf continued to sail towards Sango's plummeting form.

************

Inu Yasha quickly picks up on Kagome's scent and bares his teeth when the scent of numerous demons mingles with that of his mate. He doesn't allow himself time to think about what may be happening, only that he needs to get to his mate, and now!

Clawing his way through demons not smart enough to know any better, Inu Yasha struggles to reach Kagome.

“Kagome!! I'm coming!” Inu Yasha leaps into the air, slicing his fully transformed Tetsusaiga through the seeming unending flow of demons.

But the demons have their own orders from Naraku; Keep the hanyou away from the girl.

Inu Yasha finally spies her in the distance, just as she releases her purifying arrow into the swirling dark portal. He covers his eyes from the bright glare and is stunned to discover that the portal is still standing. The tiny fine hairs all over his body stand on end as Naraku's chilling laughter suddenly fills the sky.

“KAGOME!!” But there are so many demons. Even more then before! They suddenly erupt from the ground and attempt to swarm Inu Yasha all at once. Flipping backwards and dropping to all fours, Inu Yasha narrowly misses the flying insect demon that tries to take his head off.

Inu Yasha battles ferociously through the thick swarm of demons and roars in frustration, already knowing that the demons were intentionally trying to keep him from getting to Kagome. “I don't think so fuckers!”

Inu Yasha swings the Tetsusaiga overhead and a dozen demons evaporate at the touch of Tetsusaiga's power, only to be replaced by two dozen more. Inu Yasha roars in barely restrained fury. He's so close, and yet with the continuous swarm of demons, the distance separating him from his mate might as well have been an ocean. Not to mention that with the connection to his mate still being blocked, he had little hope of letting her sense his nearness, much less transfer any useful energy to her.

A thunderous spine chilling roar that rolls across the sky causes Inu Yasha to look up as he continues to battle the thick of demons. His breath catches in his throat as he glimpses the sight of a fallen Kagome. But it's the sight of the large dark mass of energy about to be released by Naraku, and headed straight for his Kagome, that causes Inu Yasha to feel a panic and a helplessness he has seldom ever felt in his life, save when he was a small child.

Trapped behind a wall of unyielding demons and his mate's life hanging precariously in the balance, Inu Yasha unleashes his own powerful angry roar. His molten golden eyes suddenly begin to burn a fierce blinding red. Demon markings begin to appear on his face and arms as Inu Yasha's transformation continues to push his demon blood beyond its limits.

Flashes of a battle, long since forgotten, swarm in his agitated mind.

Fire. Smoke. Screams.

Inu Yasha cries out as he falls to his knees, his hair cascading around his shoulders like a curtain. He grips the Tetsusaiga tightly to his chest, struggling to battle and control the overwhelming powers surging within him. Kagome's fearful cry in the distance carries to his ears, igniting his demonic instincts as they suddenly surge forward, overcoming the power of the Tetsusaiga.

Inu Yasha lifts his head to the sky, releasing a deafening roar that causes even the attacking demons to stop short in uncertainty, as Inu Yasha's demon blood explodes with an unimaginable force within him. He continues to roar in a mix of pain and confusion as his demon blood smashes through his human barriers, swallowing him completely in the flux of demonic powers, when Inu Yasha suddenly falls silent.

An eerie quiet descends around the hanyou as Inu Yasha slowly begins to rise. He stands, head bent, in the middle of a ring of demons that are unsure as to weather or not they should attack the strange and powerful demon before them. Inu Yasha's golden eyes, hidden beneath his bangs, glow crimson red as demon markings appear on his skin and begin to briefly glow a faint purplish hue. Silently, slowly, Inu Yasha lifts a pulsating and newly transformed Tetsusaiga over his head. A Tetsusaiga that now carries the same purple demon markings of Inu Yasha's mixed blood, upon its blade.

Inu Yasha slowly raises the sword overhead, as the demons continue to blink at him in uncertainty. In one swift and silent stroke, Inu Yasha is left standing in nothing but a ring of ash.

****************

Kagome closes her eyes and prays for the safety of her loved ones, as the massive dark ball of Naraku's energy makes straight for her fallen form. Allowing herself only a brief moment of regret, she wishes that she had been enough to take on Naraku and been given the chance to finally begin a life for herself and Inu Yasha.

“I'm sorry Inu Yasha.”

She quickly pushes the thoughts away and opens her eyes to meet her end face on. She steels her nerves and her emotions, raising her hand above her eyes to block out the dark scratchy glare of the power bomb hurtling towards her. “I will not be afraid.”

“No? Well you should be.”

Kagome whips her head in the direction of the new voice. “Wha..?”

She barely has time to register the image of the dark cloaked demon running towards her, as Naraku's dark energy bomb continues to speed along its course. Just as the massive energy comes crashing on top of her head, the cloaked demon throws himself over Kagome's form, using his body as a shield. Kagome's eyes widen in horror and disbelief as she briefly catches sight of the demon's face for the first time. Her shock is outweighed only by the horrific knowledge that there would be no way for either of them to survive the blast.
