Chapter 3-
The truth of Love and Life
InuYasha was still in shock. Here he was standing there with Kikyo in his arms, when only moments ago his mind had been filled with thoughts of Kagome. Her scent still lingered in the air, but was now being over powered by that of Kikyo.
InuYasha’s arms were involuntarily around Kikyo’s shoulders, having landed there when she threw herself against him. His head was tilted back to keep from resting his chin on her head. He was trying, without much luck, to lead her on. How could he give her an answer, he didn’t have an answer to the question himself.
To him, Kikyo was like a rose. She was soft, and beautiful, but not without thorns. Those thorns were the past. Each time he looked at her, he could see her pointing her bow at him. He could feel the shot of the arrow that had pierced him and bound him to the tree. Despite how they had felt before, there was no overlooking the betrayal that each had believed the other had caused. Even if they knew Naraku had turned them against each other, Naraku had also brought up one good point. If he and Kikyo had loved each other so much, how could they believe the other could betray them?
InuYasha took a small leap backwards, as if Kikyo’s touch had burned him. So many time he had pictured the two of them together. When Kikyo was first brought back from the dead, he had chased after her, wanting to explain himself, wanting her to know that he had never betrayed her. Even when the truth came to light, he still couldn’t help but feel betrayed in some small way. He still felt that way. Even though the sting had left, the pain still lingered.
“Kikyo....” He began, his voice unusually quiet and gentle. “Why do you want to be with me now? For so long you’ve sworn your revenge on me, that you would strike me down for betraying you, now you want me to be with you? Time and time again you’ve had your chance, but you turned them all down. Now you’re asking me to stop everything I’m doing and give everything up because you want me? It doesn’t work that way.”
Kikyo’s eyes began to spill over with tears. She knew that her past actions would cause a problem, but she had hoped against hope that he would over look them. There was more to InuYasha’s rejection. She could sense that there was something he wasn’t telling her.
“I know this InuYasha. But now, I am able to love and be with you as a ordinary woman. There is nothing else standing between us anymore. If you’re willing to over look my past mistakes, perhaps we can find those feeling that we once held for each other.....perhaps we can love each other again.”
Kikyo looked to InuYasha with a wide eyed hopeful stare. Her hands shook visibly, palms growing damp with sweat as the two stared at each other. She couldn’t deny the tension building up between them, it made it almost impossible to breath. So much had happened, their lives, their deaths. For so long she had thought InuYasha responsible for her death, and her broken heart, but after discovering Naraku’s tricks, she realized that InuYasha had not been responsible for her death. If only she had known then, perhaps they might not be standing here now.
InuYasha kept his distance from Kikyo, listening to her words, but not really hearing them. His mind was back on Kagome. Each time she had watched Kikyo and InuYasha together, her remembered the pain he saw in her eyes. He could never forget the sorrowful looks, and pained expressions whenever she questioned what they had talked about. How would she react to this? Kagome...the woman who had trusted him, no matter how many times he had hurt her, she had stayed by his side.
But what had Kikyo done? When she thought that InuYasha had betrayed her, she ran after him, and killed him. For 50 years he was bound to that tree, all because Kikyo had not trusted him. He knew trust was a fragile thing, but if there had been even one shred of love between them, wouldn’t that have been enough to stop what had happened? If she had really cared for him, wouldn’t she have at least questioned him about his actions? How could she have loved him when she hadn’t had enough faith in him to know he’d never betray her?
A smirk crossed over InuYasha’s lips, the same cynical smirk he typically gave his enemy whenever they had counted him out. There was more to this then what Kikyo was letting on. Why did she suddenly feel the urge to be with him? Days, weeks, even months had past since she had returned, why this sudden urgency? Anger rose in him, turning his eyes into amber hues of fire.
Memories of the past swarmed his mind. The memory of their time together reopened wounds he thought to be healed. The memory of her actions causing his heart to ache all over again. But that wasn’t all. Even when they had been together, when they had been happy, hadn’t Kikyo wanted to change him? She was too good to lose face with all those around her and love him as a hanyou. She had never been willing to give up anything to be with him as he was, yet she had expected him to give up who he was to be with her.
“So tell me Kikyo, if I were to be with you would it be as I am now. Or do you only want me if I’m willing to become a human?” The words came from him in an irritated tone. He had hoped that his words would cause the same sting that the memories she had caused to rush back caused him.
He heard Kikyo gasp at his words, but he didn’t stop. He was angry now. She had a chance to be with him over 50 years ago. If she had fallen in love with him, she would have loved him how he was. All those years he had felt the pain of what had happened, but now he realized that it no longer bothered him anymore, he no longer cared for what could have been.
“Would you like me to give up even more of myself so that you can live and love me as you choose? What about what I want Kikyo, does that even matter to you? Did you even bother thinking about me before you came here, or were you only thinking about yourself and what you wanted?”
“InuYasha....I did love you! You felt it too....we both felt it, I know it!” Her stared up at him, her eyes brimming with tears once more. But why was she hurting? Could it be that in some small way she knew what he was saying was true? She had wanted to change him, but only so she could be with him. As a priestess, there was no way that she could have married a demon. But was that her only reason? Deep down, did she resent his strength?
InuYasha continued his rant, determined to get it all of his chest in hopes that he would never have to confront her again. “Even when we were together, it was never good enough for you....I was never good enough for you. So why do you want to be with me now? Tired of not having that same little lap dog that I was following you around? Or is it the fact you can’t stand to see me happy?”
Happy? Kikyo stared into InuYasha’s eyes, searching for some sign of happiness of even being around her. She could find nothing but resentment. Where was this happiness he spoke of? What was causing it? It was then that it dawned on her. She knew why InuYasha would not be with her.
“It’s her, isn’t it InuYasha? It’s Kagome. She’s poisoned your mind against me. “
“Hardly Kikyo.....Kagome has never once tried to stand in your way. Even after you tried to kill her, she refused to say so much as one word against you. Amazing how loyal she is, even to the woman who would try to take everything away from her.”
Kikyo could only stare blankly down at the ground, her hands now limp at her sides. She felt as she had the day of her death, the day she believed InuYasha had killed her. She knew he was right though. Kikyo had known that Kagome had been the one InuYasha wanted, that she was no longer the one who held his heart, and that she hadn’t been for some time.
She could no longer face him. It had ended between them without her even realizing. She wanted to know how long his feelings for her had been lost, but she knew she couldn’t bare his responses. Kagome had taken her place, and for that she was responsible. If only she had stopped to listen to him. If she hadn’t thought of only herself, perhaps there would be no Kagome. All the what if’s in the world couldn’t stop her heart from shattering all over again.
“I guess this is goodbye Inuyasha.....” She knew he wouldn’t respond to her. He was angry, and no longer held any feelings for her, she could tell by the dark stare of those amber eyes.
Taking a step back on her left heel, she spun around and soon disappeared into the forest, leaving Inuyasha alone with his thoughts once more.
His eyes were now open. All this time, his past feelings had restrained him from expressing to Kagome how he truly felt. Kagome had been there for him through it all. She had cried each time he had been hurt. She had cared for almost each and every wound, nursed him when he was sick. He would have slaughtered a million demons at once if it would keep a smile on the face he had grown so accustomed to. Her tears, the hurt filled looks, hadn’t it hurt him to see her like that?
He knew now what he had to do, and he didn’t care sit was the only word that came out of Kagome’s mouth from here to eternity, he had to go see her and tell her how he felt!
His eyes darted over to the well, a wide grin passing over his features. “It’s gonna be painful, but a man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do.” InuYasha’s body recoiled in a wince. “Man, she’s gonna hurt me.”
Dashing as quickly as he could, InuYasha leaped over the side of the well , and off to the future....in more ways then one.
