Chapter 7
The truth comes out....or does it?

“InuYasha! Put me down!” Kagome shouted at InuYasha, giving him a soft pound of her first.

InuYasha could only smirk in response. He was determined to carry her off where he wanted to go, without any arguments, and that wouldn’t happen if he put her down. “Forget it woman, you’re stuck there until I say it’s time for you to get down.”

He hastened his pace, now more eager then before to tell her how he felt, if only to stop her from pounding on him.

But where was the perfect spot for him to talk to her? He wanted some place with no interruptions, but he wanted it to be somewhat romantic....A waterfall perhaps? Maybe a flower covered hill overlooking the sunset? How was he suppose to know, he’d never tried being romantic in his life.

InuYasha gave up. Gently he swung Kagome over his shoulders, and set her down gently on her feet. But instead of releasing her completely, he kept one arm around her waist, just in case she decided to use the magic word.

“Let go of me InuYasha! You’re so gonna get it, I swear! Let go of me so I can say it!”

“Woman, do you ever shut up!?! Don’t you care that I’m about to tell you something important and you’re completely ruining it with all your whining!”

He knew that would get her to shut up, and he was right. As soon as the words left his mouth, she stopped struggling and went silent.

Kagome’s eyes narrowed into a glare , but InuYasha kept his arm around her, if anything the glare only made him hold her tighter. She wasn’t running from him this time, and with no interruptions, he could finally let her know how he felt without any worries. But he hadn’t considered that he actually had to say the words, that would prove to be the most difficult task.

Kagome broke up his thoughts as her voice entered his ears. “InuYasha, what are we doing here? You said you had something to tell me. Is it about Naraku?”

“Give me a minute wench! I’m trying to figure out how to tell you.”
Kagome’s heart fell. He had something to tell her which was hard to say, she could only assume that he was finally breaking the news to her that he was going to choose Kikyo. Her eyes began to fill with tears, causing her to lower her head so that he wouldn’t notice. She refused to let them fall. She wouldn’t allow InuYasha to see her cry, knowing that if he did, he might feel guilty and hold himself away from Kikyo. She knew he didn’t mean to hurt her, but he didn’t fully understand the extent of her feelings, and that was her fault entirely.

“InuYasha, I have something to tell you as well.” She knew she was lying, but it didn’t matter. She was going to make things easier on Kikyo and InuYasha, even though nothing could ever make it easier on her.

Reaching around her, she pried InuYasha’s arm from around her waist, but didn’t run even though her heart was screaming for her to run away before it was broken. She didn’t run, but she did turn her back on him, unable to look him in the eye. “I’m returning home for a while. “ She paused to swallow back another rush of tears that was threatening to spill down her cheeks. “You know with exams coming up, I need to catch up on some studying.” She tried not to let her voice waiver, trying to sound tough, but inside her heart was aching.

Before InuYasha could speak, Kagome spun around but did not look at him. Instead, she reached around his neck. For a moment InuYasha thought she was going to hug him. He was in a stunned silence as he felt tugging necklace around his neck
It took him a moment to register what she was doing. He reached up to stop her, but she brushed his hands away and continued. She had the necklace undone, but couldn’t bring herself to pull it off of him. She knew it had to be done, with that one final piece no longer left to tie him to her, he could be free to go with Kikyo. But no matter how hard she tried she was frozen. She was giving him his freedom to leave her. She wanted to be selfish but she couldn’t bring herself to do it. If he wanted Kikyo, she would have to accept this. She wanted him to be happy, even if it meant it wouldn’t be with her.

“Kagome.....” InuYasha was still at a loss. What was she doing? He didn’t understand why she was breaking the enchantment of the necklace, and even more so why she looked so sad doing it. Here he was about to tell her how he felt, and she looked like she was about to cry at any second. Unless she doesn’t feel the same way I do....he thought. Maybe she doesn’t want to be tied to me any longer, maybe she really doesn’t care for me the way I do for her.

He sensed a familiar presence and looked up to find Kikyo’s soul stealers coming towards them. He had hoped that Kagome wouldn’t notice, but when he looked at the hurt filled expression on her face, he knew she had seen them. “Kagome....” He whispered quietly, but she didn’t hear him, or at least didn’t react.

Kagome stepped away from InuYasha, giving him the saddest smile he had ever seen. Before he could react she stepped away from him and disappeared into the forest.

He wanted to rush after her, to blurt out everything that he was feeling, but his feet felt like they had been cemented into the ground. All he could do was stand there and watch helplessly as the woman he loved walked away. His Kagome was leaving him, and for some reason he couldn’t stop her.

“Stupid wench!” He yelled, but Kagome was no longer in view. “I was trying to tell you I loved you.....” His voice had dropped to a whisper as he muttered the last part.

Kagome wasn’t sure how she had managed to walk away. She had made it far enough to get out of InuYasha’s view before she dropped down on the ground. Hugging her knees to her chest, she buried her face into her legs and cried.

InuYasha was gone to her. She knew she should have been prepared for it, but deep down in her heart she had hoped that InuYasha would have returned her feelings. She should have known that InuYasha wouldn’t. Even if Kikyo was now the walking dead, she should have known she could never compete with her.

Kagome sobbed uncontrollably, unaware of everything that was going on around her. While she sat there preoccupied with her pain, shadows began to swarm over her. Kagome stopped crying and peered around her. She had just enough time to scream out “INU.....” before she disappeared in thin air.

InuYasha snapped out of his haze with Kagome’s scream. The cry unlocked his feet and he dashed off in the direction Kagome had called out from.

He found the spot where Kagome had been sitting, her scent was quickly fading. Along with Kagome’s scent, he could smell that of a demon as well, however the scent didn’t move, it just disappeared in that very spot. InuYasha began to run, first to the west, then east, but he could not find a trace of either scents.

Without wasting another minute, InuYasha ran off to find the others. He might have the nose and the senses, but the other’s often had an insight into things which he didn’t. He ran without any restraints, knowing that he didn’t have the time to waste. Kagome needed him, and he’d be damned if he was going to waste one second until she was found.

(Sorry it took so long. My hubby had control of the computer all weekend. Sorry it was so short, kinda had to rush through since my kids didn’t want to cooperate. The next chapter will be better, I promise.)
