[ A - All Readers ]
Konnichi wa everyone! This is the first fanfic that I'm posting. Tell me if it's any good and please rate and review!
Disclaimer: I do not own Inuyasha or any of the characters.
Summary: He was supposed to protect her. She was supposed to stand by his side. Alone he would lose. Together, they would win. That's the way the story goes. But what if she went alone? What if she was afraid?
The Choices We Make
“Why the fuck did you do that? You went after him; you went after Naraku on your own. Why did you do that? Answer me, wench!” Inuyasha yelled as he took her by the shoulders and shook her roughly.
“If Midoriko hadn't protected you, you would have died along with him. Died! Do you understand what that means, girl? And you didn't even tell me. You didn't let me help. You didn't even allow me that…” his voice almost a hoarse whisper, he lowered is head so that his bangs covered his eyes as he still held her by the shoulders. As Kagome continued to say nothing, he suddenly released her and stepped back.
“Keh, why do I even bother. Silly girl.” His voice was his usual gruff voice again, though he still didn't meet her eyes. “You thought you were being a hero didn't ya? That you were being noble and selfless. That's why you did it.”
“No…” Kagome whispered, looking at the ground, voice blank. “No. that's not why…”
“But you don't know what you're in for. You don't know the pain of feeling your life seep out of you. Of feeling yourself die…you don't know…or you would never have done that.” Inuyasha tried to get her to meet his eyes but she wouldn't look up.
“I do know. I've known it too, Inuyasha, remember?”
And suddenly, Inuyasha felt guilty.
Kagome, Sango and Miroku, lying on the cold forest ground, all but dead, Mukotsu's poison slowly killing them…slowly and painfully…
“Then why, Kagome?? Why would you do that knowing what you were in for. Knowing you were going to die?”
And Kagome finally raised her head and looked at him, eyes dull, flat and so full of shadows that his breath hitched painfully in his chest.
“Because, Inuyasha, that is not what I am afraid of.”
