Chapter 4
Tetsusaiga Fails
"Five minutes?" Kagome pleaded.Tetsusaiga Fails
"No," InuYasha replied.
"Four minutes?"
"No!"
"Three and a half?" Kagome clapped her hands together and batted her eyelashes for good measure.
"Don't do that wench! Fuck, no!"
"Why not! She got to touch those!"
"It wasn't my idea! She fucking groped me!" InuYasha defended.
"You're unbelievable," Kagome grumbled, folding her arms across her chest.
"I'm starting to think you're related to Miroku."
"What? No I'm not!"
"Both of you are fucking perverts. All you do is grope body parts. And your sick obsession with my ears. . ." InuYasha shuddered. "Now I'm convinced you are related."
Kagome gaped, mouth opening and closing as she tried to find some way to answer that.
"Close your mouth, wench. You'll catch flies."
'Baka,' Kagome thought. She reached into her bag for a box of pocky and started eating.
Both of them sat in silence and the only sounds that could be heard was Kagome's teeth chomping on the pocky. Miroku, Shippou and Sango had gone to a nearby village to take care of a youkai infestation. Kagome figured they'd spend the night in the village too, leaving InuYasha and her in the forest. InuYasha had flat-out refused to go near the village since it was the night of the new moon, choosing instead to stay behind. What had surprised Kagome was: He had held on to Kagome, as if afraid she would leave him alone in the forest.
"InuYasha?"
He didn't reply but turned his head slightly in her direction.
Kagome rolled her eyes and scooted closer. "Do you suppose Maekoshi wants something from us?"
"Who cares, I'm gonna Kaze no Kizu her ass back to the sky anyway. And Mizuki can go straight to hell with her."
Kagome's bottom lip jutted out when he mentioned Mizuki. ". . .Have you ever heard of a star youkai?" She wondered. "I always thought stars were beautiful. Well, they are beautiful but I wasn't referring to that. . ."
InuYasha watched her as she babbled on, mesmerized. "Keh, there ain't a thing in the world as beautiful as you, wench," he blurted out.
Kagome gasped softly as InuYasha's words soaked in. She felt her heart did a few somersaults and she held her hand up to her chest, trying to keep it from somersaulting right out. InuYasha flushed as he realized what he'd let slip and jumped up the nearest tree, determined to ignore her for the rest of the night.
Kagome slowly walked towards the tree and looked up. "InuYasha?"
InuYasha took no notice of her. He watched as she got ready for dinner and took out her sleeping bag and one of those damned romance novels she always stuck her nose in. He watched as Kagome's eyes followed the words in the book and blushed prettily at something she'd read. InuYasha was jerked out of his reverie as he felt the change in a heartbeat. Looking down, he snorted in disgust at his all-too-human fingernails and midnight hair. It wasn't so much of the human part, more like he couldn't stand this sudden vulnerability. It felt like someone wrapped something all over his senses. He remembered the fear when he was just a pup, the sudden blindness as the darkness became something foreign and suffocating.
And those were the nights where the other youkai would look for him. He recalled trusting a tiger-youkai because she let him stay with her. It was just after Mother died and the people threw him out of the castle. The tiger-youkai had assured him she'd treat him like her own child. He hunted for food for her children, dug dens for them to live in while he slept on the rock and even let them beat him for fun. All because he wanted to belong somewhere, to have a place he could call home. Yet on the night of the new moon, they ambushed him and tried to eat him. InuYasha stifled a growl. He had ran, crying and screaming and he never trusted another soul again.
Until Kagome.
At that moment, the girl in question looked at the place where he was sitting at, hidden by the branches and leaves. She gazed wistfully at him, as if waiting for something. Slowly, deliberately, Kagome put her novel aside and stood up, looking right at him.
"Would you. . .Sit with me?" Kagome asked softly, her face illuminated by the fire.
InuYasha swallowed hard, looking at her standing there, so vulnerable, so trusting. . . He wanted to tell her what she meant to him. Instead, he snorted. "Are you completely worthless without me?"
Kagome smiled benignly. "Yea, I need your protection, remember?"
He couldn't help but smile back. Shaking his head, InuYasha leaped out of the tree and landed right infront of Kagome. She sat back down and patted the place beside her. InuYasha hunkered down and stared at her with a suspicious glint in his eyes. Kagome took InuYasha's hand and held it tightly, eyes intent as she gazed back at him.
With a start, InuYasha felt warmth seep through him, into his heart. It cradled his heart that's been broken so many years ago, as if attempting to heal it. The moment was so intimate, he felt a familiar stinging in his eyes. Realization dawned on him as she broke into a huge grin. 'She knows. . .' How many times had Kagome healed him just by being there? The things he never have to tell her because she just knows. . . No matter how many times he pushed her away, hurting her, she always came back. . . 'Because she knows I need her?' InuYasha wondered. Being human was a vulnerability that he despised. Yet Kagome was able to make him feel protected and sheltered.
She made him feel at home. . . InuYasha dipped his head and angled towards her. He could feel his heart pounding in his chest as Kagome's eyelids fluttered close.
And his stomach growled.
Kagome stifled her giggle and got up to make ramen. "Kami, you eat enough to feed a third-world country."
"What's a third-world country?"
"Never mind. . ."
"Keh! I hate being human."
Kagome did laugh out loud this time, unable to resist it when he was so cute, sitting there and pouting.
"What are you laughing at, wench?"
Shrugging, Kagome gave him his ramen and laid down to continue where she left off reading.

"Kagome!" Shippou squealed, leaping into Kagome's waiting arms. "You won't believe what happened! We defeated the youkai and the headman invited us to stay in his village and Miroku and Sango were making sucking sounds all night!" Shippou made a disgusted face.Kagome shot Sango a knowing look. Miroku was looking like he was in heaven.
"And---"
Before the kitsune could say anymore to embarrass Sango, Kagome shove a lollipop in Shippou's open mouth. Sango shot Kagome a grateful look.
"Hello, InuYasha," a husky voice greeted. Kagome whipped around and spotted her, crouching on a low tree branch.
Maekoshi.
InuYasha growled menacingly and cracked his knuckled in his left hand while his left hand rested on Tetsusaiga's hilt. "No time for pleasantries, bitch," he bit out.
"Oh playtime for the puppy?"
Unshielding Tetsusaiga, InuYasha reached out for Kagome and dragged her behind him. The rusty sword transformed into his father's fang, aimed at Maekoshi.
"Getting protective, are we? Don't worry puppy I'm not here to harm you and your pathetic friends. Hand over the jewel shards and nobody gets hurt," Maekoshi declared, one hand stretched out with her palm facing up, waiting. Her fingers curled, taunting.
"Keh! Fat hope! Hand over your fucking ass and nobody gets hurt!" InuYasha snarled.
Maekoshi let out a laugh that chilled Kagome to the bones. She reached into her kimono and retrieved a golden horn. Like a graceful ballerina, she spun on the spot, her hands flailing out and Kagome was reminded of the musical box her father left for her. Maekoshi blew into the horn and stars flew out from every direction, slashing at everything in plain sight. Kirara transformed into its huge form and carried Miroku, Sango and Shippou into the air.
"Shit!" InuYasha cursed before taking off his haori and putting it over Kagome. "Stay down," he instructed and leaped into the air, Tetsusaiga raised above him. With all his strength, InuYasha heaved the fang down, straight at Maekoshi. The star youkai glanced up, flicked her wrist and stepped aside just as Tetsusaiga came crashing down.
"You're just as pathetic as your friends, hanyou," she mocked. "Witness the true power!"
Maekoshi's eyes drifted close as she rose a few feet above the ground, hands in front of her chest. An energy ball started growing larger and the ground started to shake slightly. Kagome gasped in horror as Maekoshi's eyes flew open, the color of neon green. Her wicked, maniacal laughter boomed across the grounds as dark clouds loomed above.
InuYasha pulled Kagome onto his back and soared into the air. Maekoshi 's neon green eyes concentrated on them and released the energy ball, which flew straight at them. Kagome stared hard, unafraid, knowing InuYasha was there no matter what happens.
"Power, my ass!" InuYasha muttered. He raised Tetsusaiga once again and concentrated on the energy ball. "Bakuryuuha!"
Tornados erupted where the energy ball was. Shippou transformed into his balloon form and InuYasha and Kagome stayed on him, watching the scene below. The tornados wrecked havoc on the forest, spinning everywhere and Kagome figured that if Maekoshi didn't die from this, she's immortal. They watched as Bakuryuuha started to die away and the wind gradually returning to normal.
And there she was, staring right back at them on the ground, smiling.
She hadn't moved, that much Kagome was sure of. 'But how could she withstand the power of Bakuryuuha? Even Naraku had been ripped to pieces when InuYasha used that skill. . .'
"What the---"
"You think you can destroy me with that puny magic trick? Think again!" Maekoshi broke into her maniacal laughter once more. And she began creating another energy ball, eyes shining even brighter than before.
Miroku's eyes widened at that. "Run, InuYasha!"
"Take care of Kagome," InuYasha muttered to Shippou. He sprang forwards, towards Maekoshi on the ground. "Shut up and watch, monk!" he yelled before bringing Tetsusaiga down. "Kaze No Kizu!" InuYasha roared.
Kagome's heart pounded with fear as she watched the scene before her eyes. Maekoshi had been preparing to launch her energy ball when InuYasha's 'Kaze No Kizu' stopped her. For a moment, Kagome thought they had her---until the formidable 'Kaze No Kizu' went right through the star youkai, causing no effect whatsoever.
"InuYasha!" Kagome called out. "Tetsusaiga is not working against her!"
"I know that, dammit!" InuYasha snapped. "Tell me something I don't know!"
Using her bow and arrow, Kagome aimed for the jewel shards. 'Maybe this will work,' Kagome thought hopefully. She waited till the arrow was bathed in her miko's purification powers before releasing it, and watched as it flew over InuYasha's head and straight towards Maekoshi's chest. 'Her shards are tainted, just like all the others we've come across so far. Even the ones she took from me has turned to an ugly, black glow. Maybe if I purify it, I'll purify her as well.'
Just like the 'Kaze no Kizu', the arrow went straight through her. This time though, it was a little different. The arrow had grazed the jewel shards and for an instant, the shard had glowed a different color, a lighter gray. In that instant though, Kagome saw a flicker of confusion and fear in Maekoshi's eyes. It was gone as quickly as it came and the hateful look in her eyes was back, though Kagome was grateful that her eyes were back to a duller green. The earlier color had frightened her. It reminded her of InuYasha losing to his youkai blood. Kagome shuddered.
"Kaze No Kizu!" InuYasha tried again, to no avail. The attack went straight through her. It was as if she was transparant.
"InuYasha! Try attacking her jewel shards!" Miroku suggested.
Kagome glanced at Miroku. So he'd noticed the sudden change in expression too. "Yea InuYasha, the shards are in her kimono! Near her chest!"
Maekoshi smiled in a malicious way. She lifted both arms in the air and to everyone's utter shock, the trees around the area rose into the air with the motion. The star youkai then twirled her fingers together and the trees melded into one giant ball. With great force, Maekoshi swept her arms out towards InuYasha and sent the tree ball rolling with a colossal energy bolt.
"InuYasha!" Kagome shrieked.
At that point of time, nothing could have saved him, not even Tetsusaiga. But a warm pink glow erupted around all of them and the trees bounded back, towards Maekoshi. Thinking it was Kagome, everyone turned towards her, only to find her features as surprised as themselves. A small pink shape came out of nowhere and stood infront of InuYasha.
"Back off, Maekoshi!" Mizuki said angrily. "Go back with me, and we can work something out. I promise."
Maekoshi raised an eyebrow. "What can you do? You're just a little girl," she sneered. "Oh, a little girl with a huge crush. On a hanyou."
InuYasha flinched.
"Alright. Playtime is over. You shall perish today," she declared with menace. Maekoshi closed her eyes once more and summoned her energy ball. It was the biggest one yet. The skies turned an ominous black, as if the sun was trying to hide from the power itself.
"Aw man, it'll be hard to dodge this one," Mizuki moaned. "Let's just get outta here."
Before InuYasha could refuse, they were bathed in white light, so bright that it hurt to open his eyes.
Mizuki grinned. "Bear with it awhile, Inu-chan. We'll be there in a minute."
"Where are we going?" Kagome asked, too stunned to realize that Mizuki was staring at InuYasha adoringly.
Suddenly, the white light disappeared. Kagome looked around and let out a choked scream.
They were on the rooftop of the local cinema. In modern Tokyo.
