Choosing your path: An Inu-Yasha tale

Chapter three:Desires

As the five travelers continued onward, many thoughts came to all of their minds, some simple, some confusing. Sango and Miroku both mainly thought of Naraku, and getting vengence against the demon. Shippo thought just of managing to gather the other shards of the Shikon no Tama. But, Kagome and Inu-Yasha had only one thing on their minds; each other. That was no surprise, though, after what had just happened between the two after they reunited. Both were confused and unsure of themselves, knowing things were rather different now, and things might not become any simpler.

*Inu-Yasha's POV*

I continued walking in front of the others, as if nothing was wrong, but my mind was just cluttered with confusion, over Kagome, of course. 'Kikyou, you told me someone else gives me strength, meaning someone else exists that I'm in love with, but, is it really Kagome? I know she's the reincarnate of you, which would instantly draw me to her, but it didn't. I in fact, despised her for being like you. Because it hurt to see you back in my life, in any form. Her scent, her looks, they're both like your's..well, the scent is sweeter. Do I...love Kagome..?'

*Kagome's POV*

As Inu-Yasha walked, I noticed he was remaining silent, as if in deep thought, but I had no clue why he was. I just continued walking behind him, since I, too, was in pretty deep thought. 'Maybe Inu-Yasha cares for me. I mean, he did hug me when he saw me and all. And he hasn't thrown me back in that well yet... Does he...want me to stay? Does he love me?! But, I'm just a human, he's half youkai, he wouldn't bother with me. I wouldn't be so lucky...WAIT! Lucky!? Do I want Inu-Yasha to love me? Do I love Inu-Yasha..?'

*Third person POV*

"Hey, Kagome?" Shippo called to the teenaged girl.

"Yes, Shippo?" she answered, looking down at the young Kitsune.

"Um...how come you're blushin'?"

Kagome quickly realized that her thoughts had also caused her cheeks to become red, and, Shippo noticing it only made it worse. Looking away from the Kitsune, she tried to figure out an excuse. "It's just hot out today, Shippo-chan. I don't feel that great so my face is red."

"Oh, okay, Kagome!" Shippo said and perched atop the girl's head.

Inu-Yasha had overheard this, though, and stopped walking, turning around to Kagome. "You don't feel well?..." he asked. "Do you want us to stop for a while? After all, you all were looking for me and Sango last night, I'm sure you could use a good rest, Kagome." Inu-Yasha stated, which just turned the already red Kagome to brighten, almost to the point of exploding.

"N-no, I'm fine, Inu-Yasha, we can continue." she said, smiling meekly.

"All right, but when you're ready to stop, tell me." he said and turned around, beginning to walk again. 'That's one of the few times I've shown Kagome genuine care... And I didn't even have to think twice about it. Maybe I really do love her...' Inu-Yasha thought to himself. 'But I can't tell her, 'cause if Naraku kills me in our fight, it would just hurt Kagome.'

"Inu-Yasha, are you sure we cannot stop for a short rest?" Miroku asked. "I'm pretty tired after trying to track you down last night." Inu-Yasha stopped, then turned to glare at the monk. This was the kind of look that made Miroku know that Inu-Yasha would kill him if he continued to ask. "Never mind, I'm fine, let us continue onward." Miroku quickly answered. Inu-Yasha smirked and began walking again. "I'm never going to get rest, unless my name happens to be Kagome..." Miroku muttered softly.

"Poor, poor, Miroku..." Sango teased and winked at the monk before walking in front of him to catch up with Kagome and Inu-Yasha.

Miroku winced because of the wink, thinking about how beautiful Sango was. It was a surprise though, that he was thinking in a serious manner, and not just thinking of groping her, like he often did to other girls. Of course he had groped Sango many times before, and either gotten bitten by Kilalah, or smacked upside the head by that giant boomerang. Each time it still had been well worth it. Smirking deviously, Miroku snuck up behind Sango, then walked to her side as if he was going to pass her, then gently ran his hand across her butt before walking forward. He almost chuckled in triumph, but was quickly pushed to the ground, then walked over by Sango, and all he heard was her muttering 'Pervert.'

*That night*

The group of travelers had called it a night, around eight P.M., seeing as the sun had just set. Miroku had built a fire, then began tending to his injuries from before, many of which were injuries to his pride. "So, about what time will we leave out tommorow morning?" Miroku questioned, rubbing his back which still hurt after having Sango step over it. He just wanted more time to sleep to hope his back would feel better.

"Dawn." was all Inu-Yasha said.

Kagome, who was sitting beside Inu-Yasha, whined a bit. "Do we HAVE to leave so early, Inu-Yasha? As it is I'm tired, and haven't slept for a long time now."

"I guess we can leave a little after dawn..." Inu-Yasha said.

"Thank you, Inu-Yasha.." she said smiling.

"Yes, thank you, Inu-Yasha." Miroku seconded.

"Why are you thanking me? You and I are getting up at dawn to guard the camp." Inu-Yasha stated.

"Ugh..." Miroku said and just fell onto the ground.

Kagome yawned softly, and when Inu-Yasha went to ask if she was tired, there she was with her head on the youkai's shoulder, sleeping soundly. Inu-Yasha blushed a bit, but had to smile. 'Sleep well, Kagome.' Inu-Yasha thought to himself, wrapping his right arm around Kagome's shoulder and leaning his head gently against her's.

"Well, well, night, love birds.." Sango teased and went and laid down on the ground, against a tree.

"Hmm...Inu-Yasha, your tough demeanor is fading..." Miroku said and went to lay beside Sango, but a kick in the 'right' place from Sango sent Miroku on the other side of the camp to now nurse more wounds.

As Inu-Yasha began to doze off, he heard Kagome say something in her sleep. "Inu-Yasha, I'm glad you're here..."

Inu-Yasha blushed a bit and looked at Kagome. "Kagome...I.."

"Inu-Yasha, don't go away..." she mumbled in her sleep, and snuggled closer to Inu-Yasha.

"I won't." he told her, and she smiled in her sleep. "Night, Kagome."

As the four slept, no one realized that Shippo was still awake. It was easy to forget about the Kitsune, after all. "Inu-Yasha loves Kagome, and Kagome loves Inu-Yasha, so why don't they tell each other?" he asked, looking at the two, seeing how they were holding one another in their arms. "I know! If I can get those two to kiss, they'll admit they love each other! I'm a genius!" the little kitsune cheered grinning. Moving beside Kagome, Shippo tried his best to sound like Kagome, and once he had the voice right whispered, "Inu-Yasha...kiss me." then scurried off, acting like he was asleep by Sango and Kilalah.

Inu-Yasha awoke hearing these words and blinked, looking at Kagome, who was also awake now but didn't see Shippo scurry off. "Kagome?..." Inu-Yasha questioned.

"Inu-Yasha...I want to tell you something.." she said softly.

"Yeah, me too..."

"I..lo..." Kagome felt herself blushing intensely and couldn't force the words out.

"You don't want me to become full youkai, do you Kagome-chan?" Inu-Yasha asked, not realizing what Kagome was about to say.

"No..I like you the way you are."

"Then, I won't use the jewel for that, okay?" Inu-Yasha said, smiling softly.

"Really?" Inu-Yasha nodded. "Thank you, Inu-Yasha..."

"What did you want to tell me, Kagome?" Inu-Yasha asked, blinking his golden eyes in a confused fashion.

"Oh...um...it's nothing, Inu-Yasha. Maybe I'll tell you in the morning..I'm really sleepy." Kagome said, not being able to admit her feelings to Inu-Yasha. As much as she wanted to, she couldn't if she didn't know how the youkai felt in return. She almost wished she could be a half youkai, like Inu-Yasha, since she thought that would make her stronger. "Wait.. Inu-Yasha?"

"Yeah?"

"What if I became a half youkai, like you, with the Shikon no Tama?" she asked.

"Why would you want to do that?" Inu-Yasha asked, in a complete state of confusion.

"Well, we'd be more alike then." she stated. "Wouldn't that be cool?"

"Hmm...I don't know. I'm just used to you as a human, Kagome. It's hard to choose how I'd feel if you were like me. Either way, though, you're still you.. that's what's important." Inu-Yasha said, but also wondered. 'Does she want to become a half-breed to be with me..?'

"Well, then I'd be able to stay here forever, as a youkai." Kagome said.

"Yeah, I'd like if you were always here..." he admitted without thinking. "Anyway, let's go back to sleep..."

Kagome blushed a bit at hearing Inu-Yasha's words, but nodded, laying her head back against Inu-Yasha's shoulder. "Good night, Inu-Yasha."

"Night, Kagome-Chan." Inu-Yasha said as the two fell fast asleep against one another.
