Cinderella:: Prologue

Rain fell as a young Kagome dressed. The 10 year old wore a beautiful sapphire gown and a beautiful matching necklace. She looked so elegant as she walked down the grand stairs of her home. Her face fell when she saw Souta. He gave her an evil look that was quickly hidden by a fake smile.

“Your wardrobe is lovely, Lady Kagome,” he told her as she stopped in front of him.

She forced a smile and replied, “Thank you, I think your… hair is nice. Very nice.”

“Kags!” she heard a voice call. She turned and saw her father coming toward her. A genuine smile replaced her last as she ran toward her father. “You are looking lovely. This dress is prefect for the wedding!” He said lifting her in his arms and spinning on the spot.

“Only the loveliest for you, Father!” she told him as he put her down.

“Ahh, yes. We must go to the back yard now. The ceremony shall begin soon. Souta?” he said as he walked with Kagome to the enormous back yard.

“Coming my Lord,” Souta said following his new step-father and sister with disgust.

Kagome watched her father throughout the wedding. He was so happy. She had a smile plastered on her face as she walked down the aisle. She looked around. Souta had already arrived at her father's side and Step-mother was yet to come.

Kagome couldn't understand why her father “loved” Step-mother. She was vicious. Always mis-mouthing Kagome, telling her how she will never be loved where she was sending her. Kagome often had nightmares of these places. `Love,' she thought. The one thing in the world she wished to find. Not just the love her father gave her, but the love her soul mate would offer. In all the stories father told her the princess always received her soul mate. Kagome gave a peaceful sigh. `Love.'

Kagome turned when she heard the scream. Her eyes turned to horror when she saw her father fall to the ground. She made a mad dash to him, pushing everyone out of her way, and knelt beside him. His eyes turned to her, “Kags, be a good girl, ok?”

“Father! No, don't you dare! Father you need to get to bed. You will be better in no time,” she told him, trying in vein to lift him.

“Yes,” he said, “Someone take me to my bed.

Kagome's eyes were shaded by her bangs. She would not believe it true. Even with the casket before her. Her one and only love was gone. It didn't sound quite right.

Flashback-

“Kagome,” her father called weakly from his bed.

“Yes, father, I am here,” she said soothingly while holding a cold rag to his forehead.

“I won't make it, darling, “ he told her ever more weakly. “You must watch over my bride. Make her welcome.”

“Yes you will make it,” she told him firmly. “Stop talking like that!”

“Kags,” he said.

“Yes,” she questioned, looking up to see his weak watery smile. She felt the long awaited tears burn her eyes.

“I love you so much, always remember that. Promise?”

“Father…”

“Kags, do you promise?

“I promise, Father,” she told him and lunged toward him. He caught her in a fierce hug.

“I love you, too, Father,” when she heard no reply, she pulled back and saw him look at her with understanding.

She stayed with him a few hours more.

End Flashback-

She watched his casket be lowered to the ground. Tears burned her eyes as she gently set her single white rose, her favorite colored rose, on his casket. She turned and ran, ran wherever her feet took her.

“You will be sleeping in the attic from now on. As well as cleaning, cooking, and laundry,” her step-mother instructed her. Kagome looked at her. A nightmare within it self. “Ah, yes, your gowns. You won't be needing them.”

Kagome could see no hope in the future. All she thought she could do was bear with it. There was no where else for the child to go anyway.

That night she fell into the most tiring sleep she will ever have.
