Epilogue
When Shippo came out of the forest into the clearing around the well, he was feeling dejected. He hadn't found Kagome or that idiot InuYasha. So when he saw that Kagome was back, he was thrilled at first. But the idiot InuYasha was back too, and he slowed down when he saw him. As he got closer he could sense something was very wrong. Everyone was so subdued and no one was looking directly at the other.
No one seemed to notice him. As he watched, Kagome leaned wearily into InuYasha and the kitsune bristled. That dope, it looked like Kagome had forgiven him, and he didn't deserve it after what he had done. Then getting closer he noticed that Kagome was not the only one looking like she had been crying hard all day. Sango looked awful as well… Miroku…and to his disbelief InuYasha looked like he had been crying too.
`What's been going on?' he thought.
“Kagome, your back!” he said, rushing into her arms with his usual exuberance.
Kagome gave him a weak smile, but her look of utter emotional exhaustion caused him to be as subdued as the rest of them.
“Anyone mind telling me what's going on?” He said.
They all glanced at him, and then away. Sango turned her head into Mirokus shoulder and he put his arm around her, rubbing her back. InuYasha sighed heavily and put his head in his hand. Kagome squeezed the bridge of her nose with her fingers, and closed her eyes, then took a deep breath.
“Shippo,” she said softly, “there are things that have happened that I don't think you can understand. Hopefully, you never have to go through the day from hell the four of us have been through.”
“Why Kagome?” he whined, “Its all InuYashas fault isn't it. Why did you take him back?”
InuYasha started to growl menacingly, but at a look from Kagome subsided. Shocked, Shippo was astounded that he didn't go after him. And to be subdued by Kagome with only a look was definitely surprising.
“Kagome -..” he started to say.
“Enough Shippo,” she said, “just give us some time to readjust to things…and we will try to resume our quest, just as we've always done.”
Shippo shut up and sat in glum silence.
The adults were all wondering how they would ever be able to trust each other again, or ever be totally comfortable with each other. The cost of betrayal weighed heavily on their hearts and minds. One thing was for certain; there was no going back to the way things were before today's events unfolded.
