Chapter One: Move.

It was strange, being here. Kyoto is very different from Tokyo; that city is always so bright, so vibrant.

Kyoto is just sort of... bleak. Dim. Cloudy skies that seem as though they were just made to blot out the sun.

I can't say that I didn't like being here, but I also can't say that I fully understood my decision to move here. My mother... she was getting remarried soon, and my younger brother Souta was just fine with that decision... but I wasn't. My mother makes rash decisions sometimes, but... Look, I love my mother, and I always will, but she's not YOUNG anymore. She can't just up and leave when things are going bad and get married to a guy when things are going well.

I sighed as I thought about this. The train was coming up on its destination, and I knew that my grandfather would be waiting for me.

When I stepped out of the bullet train, there was a huge crowd of people awaiting their loved one's arrival. Somehow, even though I hadn't seen the man in at least fifteen years, I could recognize my grandfather in an instant.

His smile was wide as he laid eyes on me; he had irises that were a deep, earthy brown color, fairly close to my own's chocolate shade. He had a slightly darker color of skin tone than I did, his being deep olive and mine being a fairer shade of beige. We both had shiny, raven hair, but he had always kept his cut short, and I let mine grow long, down to my waist, so that it would become curly at the ends.

My smile was just as wide as I hugged him; I was honestly glad to see him, despite the circumstances.

"It's good to have you here with me, Kagome," he murmured in my ear as he squeezed me gently.

"It's good to BE here, Grampa."

The ride home was fairly quiet; he just asked me a few questions about how my mother was doing. I answered them, telling him about Kenji. He just nodded, staring out the windshield at the road, and I could tell that he was about as impressed with my mother's spontaneous decision as I was. Yet all he said to me on the subject was, "Good for her."

He asked about Souta and about my school; I told him that Souta was doing fairly well in school, and that he was well on his way to being a good athlete. I didn't say anything about my own; I didn't like reminding my relatives that I was completely disinterested in most sports. Archery was really the only physical activity that I actually enjoyed, and my mother had nearly blown a head gasket when I told her I wanted to join the archery team at my old school in Tokyo. "Archery isn't a real sport!" she had exclaimed rather loudly. "Why can't you be normal, Kagome, and want to play soccer or be a cheerleader?"

Yeah. That was my entire family's eternal question: Kagome, why can't you be normal?

I guess normal wasn't really in the cards for me. Maybe that was why I decided to move to Kyoto; I was never meant to be normal.

Never.

Chapter Two: Settling.

Grampa had already set up my new room. He'd started explaining everything about house rules as we pulled up to the property. He ran a shrine; it was basically a small house with a couple other smaller houses, all used for different things. One was the shop, where Grampa sold small trinkets and religious items. Another was the temple, used for praying and blessings, as Grampa himself was a priest. The last was a small, old well house, but, as Grampa explained, he really had no use for it, as the house now had indoor plumbing and the well had dried up ages ago.

The rules were about the same here as they had been in my mother's house: no staying out too late, no leaving dirty dishes in the sink, do your chores, help keep the place clean, no bringing boys over unsupervised...

I snorted at that last one. At seventeen, I had yet to land a single boyfriend.

I doubted that would change just because I had moved to Kyoto.
