InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ Claimed. ❯ Decipher. ( Chapter 3 )

A/N: All right, I have something to say. If you have not listened to Paramore's "Decode" from the Twilight soundtrack, you may not entirely grasp the mood that I am attempting to deliver in this story. This chapter [the "decipher" part, anyway] stems from the song a great deal. This is, obviously, where Kagome first meets Inuyasha. Now, let me explain: I am going to try my hardest to keep everyone in character. Some of them may come off a little OOC, because I am kind of mismatching the Inuyasha cast with the Twilight cast.
The way I see it is that Inuyasha PHYSICALLY matches up to Edward but definitely not emotionally or mentally. In Inuyasha, Inuyasha is the brash, quirky one, and Kagome is rather calm and, sometimes, intense. In Twilight, this is backwards; Edward is like Kagome, and Bella strikes me as Inuyasha-esque.
Therefore, please remain calm with me while I work out this little bit of role-reversal that I am dealing with.

Chapter Three: Decipher.
The school was a small, bland building; I couldn't help feeling imprisoned as I sat inside, in my first class. I shivered a little; the weather wasn't exactly what I would call pleasant, and my bare legs were very, very cold from the lack of clothing. I looked around at the other students; it was a bit of relief, I had to admit, to find that all the girls had to wear the same short mini skirt, but they were also wearing white leg warmers loosely around their calves. I nodded, making a mental note to myself to find some leg warmers before school started tomorrow.
The bell rang, and it was time to move to the next class.
As I walked down the hall, looking back and forth between the schedule in my hands and the room numbers above the doors, I nearly lost my balance when I bumped into someone. "Oh, I'm sorry," I said, my tone soft. I looked up into the pretty violet eyes of a boy my age. He wore the boys' uniform, a white button-down shirt, black slacks and shiny black shoes. His hair was woven into a single, black braid down his back, and his smile widened when he looked down into my face. "It's no problem, Kagome Higurashi," he said, steadying me with a hand on my left shoulder.
My eyes narrowed. "How do you know my name?"
He laughed; it was a light, carefree sound. "This is a pretty small school," he answered. "News travels pretty fast."
I smiled, relaxing a bit. "Sorry," I apologized. "Things are pretty different in Tokyo."
"Oh yeah?"
I nodded. "Yeah. For one thing, I went to a big public school where no one really knew my name, and we could wear whatever we wanted." I gestured to my uniform in disgust.
The boy laughed. "I know what you mean." He held out his hand to shake mine. "I'm Bankotsu, by the way."
Smiling sweetly, I shook his hand. "Nice to meet you, Bankotsu."
Suddenly, I shuddered. There was no reason for it; I wasn't cold, I wasn't frightened. But, somehow, right then... I felt WATCHED. I looked around quickly, but I didn't see anyone really sticking out from the crowd. Bankotsu leaned over, positioning himself back into my train of thought. "Hey there. You all right, Kagome?"
I nodded, a little stiffly, but he didn't seem deterred. The bell rang, and I stomped my foot a little, holding back a curse. "I can't seem to find room 214... I need to get there for biology."
Bankotsu's smile widened even more; how that was possible, I had no way of knowing. "I'll walk you there. That's my next class, too." As we walked down the fastly emptying hallway, he eyed my large yellow bag. "Would you like me to-"
"No," I cut him off, knowing exactly where his question was headed. He looked a little crestfallen by my abruptness, but I couldn't bring myself to really care. This Bankotsu was nice enough, granted, but I wasn't one of those girls who was interested in a boy just because he was "nice." Quite honestly, the vibe I got off him didn't really impress me in a romantic way, and, as we conversed on our way down the hall, it seemed that my instincts were, once again, spot on.
He talked about sports, about the weather, about gossip, about the town in general. I was completely disinterested.
Instead, my mind started to wander back to that moment in the hallway, when I got that odd shiver. I felt... a little paranoid after that strange sense of being watched, but it was SO STRONG.
Definitely too strong for me to ignore.
Now I felt as though there was something WRONG here. Something weird was in this school; I could feel it. And, like with Bankotsu, my instincts are rarely incorrect.
Finally, we arrived at the biology room, a whole five minutes late for the class. Bankotsu smiled brightly as he held the door open for me, closing it behind him. The sensei standing at the front of the class gave us a slightly perturbed look over his glasses, but Bankotsu gestured to me, holding me by my elbows. "This is Kagome Higurashi, sensei," he greeted the teacher. "She couldn't figure out the way to your class; I helped her."
The older man just nodded, his demeanor a little gruff for my taste.
"Bankotsu, if you would, please, just take your seat," he replied. As Bankotsu sat down at a desk on the second row of lab tables, the teacher motioned for me to take a seat in the back. "Kagome, why don't you sit beside Inuyasha, there in the back. Maybe he won't scare you off like all the rest." Giggles and murmurs ran rampant through the crowded room at that.
As I started forward, I looked up, meeting eyes with the boy sitting, alone, at the back lab table. He stared at me, his expression a little surprised, and I took my time walking back there so I could observe his features. He had long, midnight-black hair that he let just run right down his back, and his skin was a very light, creamy color, almost white. His nose was a little on the small side and turned upward at the end a little sharply; his eyes were big and...
I blinked, nearly stopping in my tracks. 'Are his eyes GOLD?'
He saw me staring, and he finally looked away, his expression unreadable. As I approached him, I tried to be at least a little respectful and not stare. I heard him gasp as I stood next to the chair, but I still didn't look directly at him.
I hadn't even sat down when I noticed, out of the corner of my eye, his lip curl back a little, into what seemed like a snarl. But when I turned my head to fully look at him, his gaze had returned to the sensei standing at the front of the room, his face serene, his expression concentrated. I swallowed uncomfortably, all too aware of the seemingly misplaced hostility this boy was feeling toward me.
'What have I done to you?' I asked him mentally, trying to maintain my composure. 'I've never met you before in my life; how could you make such a hateful look at me after knowing me barely a second?'
When I glanced back at him a few seconds later, he was watching me again; his eyes held such anger, such hate...
The bell rang right then, and, like a bullet, he was out the door before I was even on my feet. I seethed silently as I collected my books. 'I guess I'll just have to decipher those hidden looks on my own.'

Lunch was strange. Bankotsu basically pulled me over to his small table of friends, most of whom I didn't hear the names.
While we sat, eating, I got that strange sensation that I was being watched again. This time, though, I wasn't alone in that worry. The girl next to me - Ayame, I think - elbowed me gently, gesturing to a table across the room. "What did you do to get Inuyasha to stare at you like that?" she wanted to know.
I looked up; as soon as I did, Inuyasha had looked away. I took this moment to observe them.
He sat there with four other people; two girls, two guys. One of the guys looked just like him, but he had long, silver hair and golden eyes. Same nose, same near-white skin. But he had this different air about him... he seemed colder, if that was possible. He had his arms wrapped rather protectively around a small, slight girl who had long, pretty black hair and... I tilted my head at this. She had the same golden eye color.
The other girl sat on the other side of the table from Inuyasha and the other two, her hand on the last boy's knee. She had her shiny black hair pulled back into a loose, pretty sidebun, and her smile was big and bright as she joked with the other girl. The boy beside her, holding her hand, had short black hair pulled back into a small tail, and he smiled as he watched the two girls laugh. Strangely enough, both of them also had the same light skin and the same golden eyes.
'Okay,' I thought, taking a deep breath and trying not to panic. 'That's really weird. Why do they all have the same eye color? Are they related?'
As if she were reading her mind, the girl - 'Ayame, dammit, 'Gome, Ayame!' - piped up: "The REALLY cute guy beside Inuyasha is his older brother Sesshomaru. The girl sitting next to Sesshomaru is Rin, their little sister. They were all adopted by Dr. and Mrs. Taisho. The two sitting across the table from Inuyasha are Sango and Miroku Houshi, their foster sister and brother."
I nodded my head, feigning agreement, but something just didn't add up. Their eyes... 'Their eyes were all exactly the same,' I thought as I tried to return my attention to my neglected tray of food. 'That doesn't happen by chance. I mean, sure, if it were some sort of genetic abnormality, but Ayame just said that they were all adopted!' I shook my head unconsciously, not totally unaware that I was being watched once more. 'It doesn't make any sense.'
When I looked up again, it was as if he had never turned his head.

After lunch, I was called to the principal's office. As I walked down the hallway to the front of the school, where his office was located, I was thinking about the reason behind my visit to the principal's office. 'Probably just to welcome me to the new school,' I thought as I reached for the doorknob. 'Or some crap like that.'
When I opened the door, I blinked as I came in on the end of what sounded a bit like an argument. As I walked into the reception area, I saw Inuyasha standing there, the front of his body pressed against the receptionist's small desk. He was speaking in a very low voice, and he sounded... Rushed? Angry?
Suddenly, as soon as the door behind me silently clicked shut, he stopped speaking and slowly turned.
My eyes widened as he turned and gazed at me. The expression on his face was enough to pin me to the door right then and there. I couldn't move, I was so shocked. There was so much hate, so much rage... And there was some fear in his eyes as well.
He straightened up suddenly, his eyes never leaving mine. "Never mind," he mumbled to the receptionist. "I see now that this school gets a kick out of making it impossible for students to change from fourth period biology to seventh period." And with that said, he left the room swiftly, leaving me, dazed, in his wake.
As soon as he was gone, the door to the principal's office opened, and the tall man walked out, smiling. "Ah, Miss Higurashi! I am glad to welcome you to Kyoto!"
His words barely registered as Inuyasha's look lingered in my thoughts...

Sneak Peek:
Chapter Four: Fresh.
"I realize that I was a bit brash before," Inuyasha said in a quiet, pleasant tone. I dared to look at him; he was smiling. For some reason, that unsettled me. "I would like to apologize for the rude way that I behaved and begin anew. A fresh start." His smile widened as he extended his hand to me. I stared at it, then up at him, not speaking. Almost AFRAID to speak.
Finally, after I still hadn't taken his hand, he released a barely audible growl, his scowl from the week before returning. "Fine," he said, spinning his chair a little so he was facing the front again. "Have it your way, bitch."
The bell rang; he was out the door before I even saw him get to his feet.
I shook my head as I gathered my books. 'What a strange place this is turning out to be...'
