Prologue
Crickets called in the cool night air, bathing in the feeble light the heaven's offered. The moon shone down coldly, unmerciful in its ethereal gaze.
The dim light from the small, time worn cottage's, only window, illuminated the few weeds and dieing blades of grass that struggled for survival in such an unforgiving place.
Through the window, past the nighttime's mysteriousness, was a small gathering. A man, crouched before a woman, her face contorted in pain, her hand, the knuckles whitened, clutched tightly in his.
At her feet stood a doctor, his plaid sleeves rolled back, blood on his hands.
The woman yelled out in agony, tears mingling with the sweat that gathered on her brow. Her eyes roved the wooden beams above her, searching for the thing that would alleviate the intense torture.
Suddenly she relaxed, her body going limp, and her pale hand relaxed.
Breathing heavily, quiet ascending on the room, only the soothing whispers of the young woman's husband, as he reached out a shaking hand to push dark brown hair, drenched in sweat, out of her glazed eyes.
Suddenly her body tensed once again, and her face contorted as another contraction seized her body. Pale lips parted, letting an agonizing scream ring about the room.
The doctor's actions became more urgent, excitement alighting his brown eyes. His lips moved faster and faster in much needed encouragement, as her husband's body tensed.
The two combined hands gave each other one final squeeze, as a high pitched yell echoed in the small room. The young mother's body relaxed, peace covering her features, as her brown eyes alit with love born with the child's first scream.
Wrinkled and red, the baby girl squirmed and screamed at the strange new world. The doctors soothing hands did little to ease the newborns discomfort.
The smile on the young doctor's face grew as his eyes and hands roved the small child's body.
Everything seemed normal, another perfect human brought into the world.
The baby protested loudly at being touched by none other than her mother, and opened her eyes, previously shut tight to block out the strange new light, letting out a yell that made all of the occupants in the room cringe inwardly.
The doctor's smile faded. His hands stilled.
The child had grey eyes.
