It was a week before Sango was finally released from the hospital. It was a long, lonely, and boring week too. Kagome had come to visit everyday but she couldn't stay long. She had apologized a million times for not being around enough but Sango understood. Kagome had school and Sango knew how much of your life that could take up. Even so Sango still felt empty and lonely when Kagome wasn't around. Kaede, the nurse who had been the one to tell her that her father died, tried to be comforting. She did a very good job for some one that hardly knew Sango. She was almost like the grandmother Sango had never had. But Kaede was busy with other patients and didn't have a lot of time to spend with Sango either.
So Sango had been left to entertain herself most of her stay at the hospital which had been difficult since she hadn't even been allowed to leave for the cafeteria. Partly because the doctors didn't want her doing anything to reopen her wound and partly because Sango's body guard wouldn't allow it. So Sango had been stuck in her hospital bed with nothing to do but think of the family she no longer had. She wanted remember the good times she had with her family and cherish their memory but she tried not to think too much about them. Since the only memory that kept coming to mind was her brother's dieing face. The forms that the police officer had given her had been a good distraction. They had asked her basic questions like her home address and phone number but there were all obscure things from her grandmother's maiden name to her height and weight. After filling those out she had read the newspaper (Kagome brought it to her everyday she came) her front to back for the most part anyway. A few times there had been articles that Kagome had cut out which Sango assumed to be about the shooting. Most of the articles were boring but she had found one that was short and very small but was very interesting.
Unfortunately that article had been the only thing note worthy of Sango's entire stay at the hospital. Well that wasn't entirely true. Sango had a fascinating visit from her father's lawyer.
-Flashback-
Sango looked over at the door as it slowly opened to reveal a short thin man in a very expensive business suite. His hair was black, he wore small round glasses, and he carried a leather brief case. The heels of his leather shoes (which also looked expensive) clicked on the tile floor as he crossed the room toward Sango. He pulled out the chair beside her bed that was usually Kagome's and sat down placing his brief case beside him. “Hello Miss Yamamoto, I'm Ken Suzuki I was your father's friend and lawyer.” Mr. Suzuki said. She flinched a bit at the use of the word was she would have to get used to talking about her family in the past tense.
“Hello.” Sango said politely.
“It's nice to meet you. Although I wish it could have been because of something less tragic. Your father was a good man. I had a lot of respect for him. He was very found of you and your brother.” He said. Sango could see he meant it. “I suppose you don't know why I'm here really. It's about your father's Will.” Once he said this he picked up his brief case and pulled out a very official looking document that Sango took to be the her father's will.
“Ooh” Sango said.
“Everything was to be left to you and your brother but since your brother has passed it all goes to you.” He said.
“I see.” Said Sango. Her heart gave a lurch when he mentioned her brother's death.
“You won't have any access to your fathers fortune however until you've turned eighteen.”
“But that's not for nearly ten months!”
“I know. And I'm afraid there isn't anything I can do to help you the law has my hands tied. Your father's directions are clear that you can't have access till your eighteen and you won't gain full access until your twenty-one.”
“But what am I suppose to do for food!?”
“May I suggest a part time job? If it's an emergency you may be able to persuade your fathers account to give you some. He'll be handling your father's estate till your old enough. But I don't recommend going to hit unless it is a dire emergency having met the man I know he won't give you a cent unless it is a true emergency.” He said. Sango looked hopeless. “Don't look so distraught! You can still go on living in your home. Your father's accountant will continue to manage its expenses till you're eighteen. Then you'll gain some control of your father's money and you'll inherit his company.”
“His company!?” Sango said. She had never imagined be the head of a company especially not his. She didn't even know quite what her father did.
“Yes, it was going to go to your brother but… Well now it's yours.” He said. Then he took a quick glance at his watch. “Sorry for such a short visit but I have to be going.” He said quickly as he put the Will away and began to stand. He reached into his suite jacket and pulled out a business card which he handed to her. “Here, if you need anything or have any questions you can call me.” Then he left.
-End Flashback-
That had been on Thursday. It was also the day her father and brother's funerals were being held. If he had been any kind of friend to her father that was were he was going. Kagome had stayed with her the longest that day. Since she knew it was hard for Sango not to be able to go to the funeral and get some sort closer. No chance to say good bye. Sango had begged and pleaded with the nurses and doctors to allow her to go but none of them were willing to let her. So Kagome had stayed with her.
To try and distract Sango from the pain of her loss Kagome had been talking nonstop. After she had exhausted nearly every topic from the weather to world politics Sango mentioned her visit with her father's lawyer earlier. She had been even more distressed then Sango had when she found out that Sango did not have any money. She had offered to give Sango everything she had saved up from her work at the dinner but Sango had declined. Kagome had done enough for her already.
A small part of Sango did regretted declining Kagome's offer however when she had to walk ten blocks to the police station with here back still very tender. But Sango had little money and couldn't be wasting it on a cab when the place was within walking distance. Though how far “walking distance” was came into question as Sango's wound stung more and more after every block she traveled. When she finally reach the police station she did her best to walk in with her head held high despite the pain she was feeling both in her back and her heart.
The second she walked in she could see the officer who had come to see her nearly a week ago in the hospital. He sat with his head looking down as he wrote a report at his desk. Sango quietly approached the desk and cleared her throat to get his attention. He looked up quickly at her. It only took a moment before he seemed to reckignize her, this surprised Sango since she imaged he wouldn't remember someone he had barely spoken to when he was probably often meeting new victims and criminals everyday. “Excuse me, I'm here-“ Sango began but he cut her off.
“I know why you're here.” He said as he rose from his desk and hurried her into a room to the right. The room appeared to be the office of another officer. It was extremely unorganized. There were file cabinets all along the back wall with folders and papers on top of them and sticking out the corners. Buried under some more folders and papers seemed to be a computer. The only thing that was neat in the room was the officer's desk with just a few pens to one side and a pair of `In' `Out' boxes to the other. At the front of the desk were two feet which of course belonged to the messy officer who owned the room. With his legs on the table he was leaning back in a comfortable leather chair hands behind his head staring up at the ceiling looking very bored. He must have been young twenty-five at most; he was handsome with long dark hair back in a ponytail.
“Kouga!” The officer behind Sango yelled so loud she jumped a little. Kouga however just turned his attention away from the ceiling and looked at the officer bored as ever.
“You know boss,” Kouga said, “You're going to have to be a little louder I don't think the rest of the precinct heard you.” The officer merely ignored Kouga's comment.
“This is Sango Yamamoto.” He said gesturing toward her. Kouga looked over at Sango and smiled she managed to give a small smile back. “It's nice to meet you Sango.” he said. Sango nodded. “Nice to meet you too.” She said. Kouga's boss left rather suddenly after that, almost slamming the door behind him.
“Ignore him he's always a bit of a creep like that.” Kouga said. Then he took his feet of his desk and sat up. “You can sit.” He said and pointed at a chair in front of his desk. Once Sango was seated he spoke. “I'm very sorry for what happened to your father and brother.” Sango just gave him another nod; she then looked at him intently hoping for some answers.
“Tell me, have you learned anything new about why they died and who killed them?” Sango asked.
Kouga sighed. “What do you know?”
“That members of the spider gang killed them and it's their leader Naraku that's responsible.” She said through gritted teeth.
“Anything else?” Kouga asked.
“No” Sango said shaking her head.
“Naraku is a vicious criminal.” Kouga began. “The reason he wanted your family dead is because by killing your father and his heirs, you and your brother, there would be no one to manage your father's company. We think Naraku may have been hired by one of your father's business competitors in order to gain control of your father's company.”
Kouga stared at Sango as she nearly shook with anger. “That's why my family is dead? Because of some stupid company?!” Sango said she wasn't yelling but her voice filled with rage. Tears began to form at her eyes but she refused to cry. Her desire for revenge against Naraku increased. `He took my family away from me for some kind of business transaction' she thought angrily.
Kouga did not say anything for a minute. “Yes…I'm afraid so.” He said looking down at his desk it was hard for him to watch a girl in pain like that even if she was a stranger. He knew that there couldn't have possibly been any reason for Sango's loss that would have made what she was feeling any better. But her learning her family was killed over something as trivial as a company defiantly wasn't going to help.
After Sango regained her composer she looked over at Kouga staring down at his desk. “Can you answer another question for me?” She asked. He looked up at her and gave a small smile. “I'll do my best.”
Sango reached into her pants pocket and pulled out a small newspaper article. “I was wondering if you could explain this.” She said as she placed the article on the desk in front of him. Kouga looked at it for only a couple seconds before he paled a little realizing what it was. “You know, it's rather disturbing reading your own obituary.” Sango said rather calmly.
Kouga looked at her and laughed. “Yes, I imagine it would be.” He said with a hint of amusement in his voice. The look on Sango's face however told Kouga that she did not find this so funny. “Sorry, I hadn't expected you to read it.”
“So you're the one who put that in there?”
“Yes, again I apologize. But you see I wanted Naraku and the rest of the spider gang to think you were dead so that they wouldn't come after you again.”
“But won't they notice I'm not dead when I go back to school? I mean they must have had me followed or something to know where I worked which means they must know where I go to school. So who's to say they aren't going to check back to make sure that the job was finish.” Sango asked a little confused.
“Yes, your exactly right if you went back to your old school Naraku would probably find out about it and have you killed. That is why you have been entered to the witness protection program.” Kouga said. Sango began to look a little nervous Kouga seemed quite serious about this.
“And how are you going to protect me?” Sango asked.
“Well this is going to be difficult for you Sango but your going to have to change your identity and lose contact with your friends. You'll be hidden on the other side of Tokyo. I've already set you up to attend a new school.” Kouga got up and picked up a plastic ID card that he handed to Sango. She looked it over. It was a student ID card for a boy called Sano Watanabe attending Tokyo's all Boy High School.
“I thought it might be easier if I didn't change your first name to much.” Kouga said. Sango's eyes widened when she realized what Kouga was saying. “Wait!? I'm supposed to be this `Sano Watanabe'? And your expecting me to go to an all boys high school? I thought you were hiding me?! If you send me here I'm going to stick out like a sore thumb!”
“Don't worry about it I know someone who can fix that.” Kouga said cheerfully.
“They aren't a plastic surgeon are they?” Sango asked not being entirely sarcastic. Kouga's plan seemed completely bonkers so far. She wouldn't be completely surprised if Kouga told her she going to need a sex change, which if that was his idea Sango would have finished beating him senseless and have bolted out of the station fast enough to get half way across the city before you could even say `testosterone'.
“No…” Kouga said. “But I'm telling you that you don't need to worry. This guy can have you disguised well enough to fool even your room mate.”
“Room mate?” Sango asked.
“Ooh yes Tokyo boy's High is a boarding school.” Kouga said.
`This is ridiculous!' Sango thought. “Kouga this plan is crazy!? I may not be the prettiest or most feminine girl but I'm not going to be able to convince an entire school that I'm a boy. I'm afraid it's not going to work. I'd be better off just going back to my old school.”
“Listen Sango this is for your own protection. An all boy's school is that last place Naraku would ever look for you.”
“That's cause he'll stop looking once he's found me!” Sango said. Kouga just laughed. This had bad idea written all over it. Kouga just couldn't seem to see that. Sango assumed that was because this was his bad idea.
“Look you'll feel a lot better about this after you see how you look in drag.” Kouga assured her. Sango rolled her eyes, she highly doubted that.
AN: And so chapter 2 comes to a close. I had a lot of fun with Kouga as a police officer but he won't be appearing any much more after this next chapter. Things are finally going to get good in chapter 3. Least I think so cause I'll get to bring in Miroku and shake things up for Sango. Like she really needs it…
