Chapter 21: All my needs they fall

The cold winter months came and went and as the snow melted along with the ice, spring soon began. In the confusion and craziness that was Rin and Hagashouri's bonding we found ourselves forgetting the twin's birthday.

We had decided on a small celebration for their third birthday and on the same day we celebrated the first movement felt outside of Yasha's large belly.

The palace cooks spoiled them by making their favorite foods and then enough sweets to keep Inu Yasha and Rin happy for a week or more. We feasted and let the small bundles of energy play until they literally passed out on the floor amongst all the handcrafted toys they were gifted.

I had a box commissioned to hold all of the toys the boys had amassed not only from their birthdays but from the many times my mother, uncle or their uncles Kouakajou or Hagashouri had bought them a gift for no reason at all. I could tell already that Hagashouri's child would be as spoiled as the twins once it was born, it was already spoiled before it was even born. He had already commissioned the cradle and it was a work of art of Inu Youkai in full inu form prancing in intricate carvings along the cherry colored wood.

Rin had spent most of her time perfecting her skills of sewing and embroidery. She had some skill thanks to her time with the old priestess Kaede. She had never used needle much before but Kaede and Sango had taught her much during her stays with them during our battles with Naraku. They taught her to sew torn clothes and how to darn socks as well as how to mend a body's wounds with such skills. Rin had learned much of healing and it seemed to make her a calmer being when it came to her own body during her pregnancy.

With the help of her handmaids and the old cook Tamako who are all very skilled with needle and thread they helped to create many beautiful miniature blankets and quilts; a few were even given to Inu Yasha who accepted them with a shy smile, mumbled thanks and pink tinged cheeks.

Hagashouri informed me that their child would have the softest bed in all of the land. I didn't doubt his words with the way Rin was sewing; she had even learned to make a few simple baby sized yukatas which she and the other ladies fawned over. I found myself at a loss at the cuteness and amazement they found in the tiny wardrobe but kept my thoughts to myself and was glad that I did because even Inu Yasha was interested in the tiny garments.

The twins had long since outgrown such tiny things but we had stored all their previous items so that they could be passed on and as I looked at Inu Yasha's ever growing middle I was certain they would come in handy. There were bets going already on how many pups Yasha carried and what the sexes would be. He had taken the betting pool in good humor and had even placed a bet himself.

He believes he carries three though in that tiny body I cannot see where three pups would reside. My mother and uncle are betting on twins again. My mother swears Yasha will birth both girls because he is carrying high. I have seen what she speaks of and if old wives tales are to be believed then she for all purposes might be right. She says if one carries low then they are carrying a boy.

To make her point my mother asked Yasha and Rin to stand side by side. Rin's rounding belly seemed to hang low where as Yasha's was high as my mother had pointed out. This caused a stir with more bets placed on female pups and a few placing bets that Rin would birth a boy.

Rin's tiny body seemed disproportionate with her large distended belly. She looked like she would birth any day now and with all the movement in her swollen body I was betting she was more than ready.

March came and went and as April began Rin became a flurry of movement, cleaning and rearranging with a mission. My mother called it nesting and said that it wouldn't be soon.

Inu Yasha did the exact opposite. He had trouble sitting and standing and couldn't stay in any one position for long but he was constantly exhausted and drained from even the smallest task. His feet were a constant ache much like when he carried the twins and I made sure to indulge him with many foot and back massages; the end result was usually a quietly sleeping mate. My uncle and mother were great babysitters for the twins during this time though the twin's newest game was “ninja” which I used to have them quietly sneak past their Chue while he rested.

Rin's body readied itself for birth as I watched her waddling walk become more exaggerated remembering how Yasha had done the same thing before he birthed the Reimei and Keimei. I sent Kouakajou to fetch the demon slayer and the old priestess knowing Rin would feel more comfortable with the two there to help bring her child into the world.

The two arrived a day later just as Rin's pains began. Kaede took her time getting settled in saying, “First births take time.”

I knew this to be partly true and wondered how long Inu Yasha's second birth would take.

Another day had gone by and the household became a hive of activity but it was almost muted for fear of distressing Rin or Inu Yasha. Rin walked the halls wandered from room to room with Hagashouri by her side and under everyone's constant watch.

When her pains became too much I watched as Hagashouri escorted her upstairs with Sango and Kaede behind her.

The waiting game began and soon Hagashouri found him self evicted from his own quarters as the birthing began. We all did just as we did last time and found an empty room on the second floor to occupy near the birthing room so we could be close by. Drinks were poured and passed around but none went past Hagashouri's lips as he stared at the closed door across from the one we inhabited. I understood a small amount of his emotions but I could not say I understood them all. My mate was a hanyou and as tough as any demon, unlike our frail childlike Rin.

“You all stare as if death himself were coming to the party. She may be human but remember that humans' birth babies everyday,” said Inu Yasha as he entered the room with Anisina in tow.

He came over to my side like a dream come true, his charming smile in place with his confidence helping to ease the dark mood in the room.

“Baby,” exclaimed Reimei questioning.

“Soonlittle one, you'll have an adorable cousin to play with,” Inu Yasha said smiling in Hagashouri's direction.

The haunted look drifted from Hagashouri's eyes and he gave a tightlipped smile.

“I shall see you in there, Lord Inu Yasha.”

Anisina nodded in his direction and knocked on the door before entering carrying a large basket weighed down by towels and blankets. The door closed behind her and the familiar smell of sweat and blood permeated the hall.

Yasha smiled down at me and then turned to Keimei, “Be a big boy and sit next to your Toosan and help keep all the grumpy men company.”

“Yes Chue,” he said smiling widely.

Reimei stretched his arms in my direction and I lifted him up onto my lap and watched as Keimei crawled onto the chair next to me without any help and took hold of my sleeve.

Yasha leaned over and placed a kiss on each of the foreheads and then smiled at me before he too wandered across the hall and knocked on the door before entering and closing it behind him.

Hours went by and soon I had two sleeping toddlers in my arms, one on each arm snuggled inward against my chest. The quiet sound of cries filled the room and Hagashouri stood abruptly waiting for the door to be opened.

A few minutes can feel like a life time and yet we all showed our patience as we stared at that door. When it opened Inu Yasha came walking out with a large grin in place and one hand at the bend of his back.

“Go see your mate and son Hagashouri. Both are exhausted from their ordeal but healthy,” he said with a grin.

Hagashouri gleefully smiled and all but ran into that room leaving the door cracked so that the healthy wails of his son could be heard to all.

“Rin is well and has birthed a healthy son,” I asked Yasha as he sat next to me.

“Yes, all is well. She handled her first birth like it was her fifth. Her son is a healthy hanyou child who your mother swears resembles me. He is pale skinned with golden eyes and a pair of silver coated dog ears atop silver wispy hair.”

I blinked at that statement and Yasha grinned.

“Yeah, seems as though the dog demon tribe is one of few who breed true when it comes to mixing with humans. I can only hazard a guess but should Rin carry again with similar results then we will have our answer.

“Shall we take the boys to bed,” I asked as I stood with the two sleeping beings still nestled quietly in my arms.

“Don't you want to wait and see your nephew,” Yasha asked before yawning behind his haori sleeve.

“Let them have their time alone for the time being. We can step in and enjoy our nephews company in the coming days when they are in need of rest.”

Yasha smiled at me and stood with Kouakajou's help since my arms are filled.

“You talk like you won't have your hands full in a months time,” Kouakajou commented with a large smile as he looked down on Yasha's massive belly.

“When are you taking a mate Kouakajou,” Yasha asked innocently.

“Oh…no…thanks for your concern but I shall bide my time and enjoy myself through your efforts. How could I want for pups when I can enjoy all my nephews and perhaps nieces as they arrive,” he grinned and we both shook our heads in response.

“Be glad we have taken the burden off your shoulders. I imagine mother would still be on your case otherwise.”

Kouakajou smile and saluted me as I felt the room with my mate beside me and my pups in my arms.
