Chapter 22: You

Hagashouri fawned over his new family like new fathers were one to do. After a weeks deliberation the two had decided to name their son Hissoshouri; quiet victory. In a weeks time he had more than earned the name. He quietly won over everyone in the palace. He wasn't a loud child and very rarely cried. The slightest sound of discontent and Rin was at his side calming any upset. It was a rarity to see her without the newborn at her side in a sling or in her arms and when he wasn't he was more often than not in his fathers arms.

Hagashouri was besotted and I could only imagine how much worse the doting would be if they had a daughter, not to say that the two aren't planning on adding to their family in the future.

The twins were infatuated for a day or two but realizing their new cousin would be unable to play with them anytime soon their attentions quickly turned and they once again amused themselves with Jakken or Anisina.

I think it was a secret pleasure of Inu Yasha's to have the imp deal with his rambunctious sons. When I asked about this he quickly cleared the evil look of glee from his face and with a straight face said he had no idea what I was speaking of. I dare say it is vengeance for Jakken's many nasty comments over the years. As long no actual harm comes to the imp I shall let it be. There is an old saying; “happy wife, happy life”, I can just substitute wife for mate. It all seems to work the same.

Not much could bring joy to Yasha as of late. His pregnancy progressed and he grew rounder and as he grew he should have stayed abed like my mother suggested but he was stubborn. I knew his stubbornness was likely due to his independent upbringing and instead of arguing I sent a missive to Koname asking if she would come and help to deliver Inu Yasha's second litter since she had done amazingly well with the first and he trusted her above anyone else besides the old Priestess Kaede.

I contacted Kaede as well, making sure to tell the others of Inu Yasha's impending delivery. Not that they hadn't known, they had saw how large he had grown when they stayed with us for Hissoshouri's birth.

I watched as he paced the hall with the twins at his heels like ducklings, joyfully following their mother on an outing. Perhaps he was tired of sitting still, perhaps he had finally hit the “nesting” stage or perhaps it was the fact that spring was in its full glory and the cool weather and the fresh smell of the blooming fauna called out to him.

It was nearly June and yet a cool breeze continued to blow through the opened sliding doors giving us all incentive to be outside and so I followed at a slower pace behind Yasha as he wandered out onto the porch leading into the garden, his favorite place in the entire palace.

He came to the stairs and I found myself at his side offering my arm as he descended the three small stairs. His bare feet touched the grass and a soft contented sigh left his lips. I watched his toes as they wiggled and dug into the grass. His childlike joy at such a simple thing made him an intriguing and beguiling being.

“Slippers off too Toosan,” Keimei asked bouncing in place.

Inu Yasha looked at me and I noticed his expression was guarded.

“I cannot see why not, make sure to set them on the porch side by side so that they do not get lost.”

Their eyes lit up at my words; Keimei, Reimei and Yasha's. I watched the two bundles of energy do as I said and then they bounded through the garden giggling and laughing before engaging in a game of tag.

Yasha smiled and walked the garden stopping to take a deep breath every once in a while and stretching his aching back and once every so often I caught him placing his hands on his distended stomach with jaw clenched and as suddenly as it came it ended. His pains had begun but I would let him do as he did when he carried the twins, he did what felt comfortable or right and when it got to be too much I would either wait for him to say something or suggest we retire to our quarters. He had requested I be with him this time so I would do as asked unless he asked or stated otherwise.

The morning came and went and as noon came the servants brought out a light lunch. Yasha joined us but ate very little. I watched as he sipped his tea from time to time and watched as his belly tightened through his haori which it stretched against. He set his tea cup aside and rubbed his distended belly while taking soft breaths in slow rhythm. When it seemed to end he opened his eyes slowly and smiled a small smile and turned to look at me.

“We might just have our little ones with us tonight or tomorrow,” he said with a small smile.

I nodded, “I figured as much. I contacted Koname yesterday as well as the Priestess Kaede, both should be here today.”

He nodded and rubbed his belly some more, “When it gets worse I'll inform you though it seems like you can tell.”

“I am observant in most things, especially when it concerns my mate. You seem comfortable but should you need more you need only ask,” I said as I leaned over and gently placed my hand atop his hand where it lay above his belly.

He turned his hand to clasp mine and smiled shyly and nodded. We watched the twins eat messily until they had their fill and before they could run off Yasha had them help clean up their mess and take some of the dishes to the nearby servants to be taken away. Once their chore had been finished they gave him wide golden eyes filled with begging to continue their playing.

“Go have fun, when the sun starts getting low we'll head in for a bath.”

The two nodded and ran off once more. Yasha stood with my help and began to slowly walk the garden and was pulled into a game of name the plant, flower, tree, insect and small animal.

As he entertained our sons I heard footsteps behind me. Turning I was greeted with the sight of not only the old Priestess Kaede but the wolf healer Koname as well.

“Greetings, Sesshomaru-sama,” Kaede said as she stood with one hand against her lower back.

“Greetings Sesshomaru-sama, I see you have taken great care of our young lords and their birth sire,” Koname commented as she smiled watching the three in the garden looking at a frog Keimei had caught.

“Welcome Priestess and Healer. The twins have grown under my care like I promised they would,” I responded with a bow of my head.

“Not the only thing that's grown I see,” Koname commented with a lecherous grin only the old could get away with.

“Our union was fruitful,” I replied with small smile.

“Your Lady mother has told us she believes he carries twins once more,” said Kaede.

“There is enough movement within him to convince me of twins if not a small army.”

“Are you sure you are not trying to build one,” Koname asked with a cackle.

“We have been blessed,” I said as Inu Yasha saw us and began to make his way over.

The twins raced past him with the frog still clasped between Keimei's small fists.

“Toosan! I caught a frog!”

“I see that, you have done well. Make sure that he is returned to the pond when you are done playing with him,” I advised with a pat to his head.

“We can't have him,” asked Reimei.

“Would you want some to take you from your home and family,” Inu Yasha asked gently.

Both boys shook their heads no and Inu Yasha smiled, “Then do the right thing and be sure to return him to his home and family.”

“Yes Chue,” both boys chorused and they ran back towards the small koi pond with the frog passed on to Reimei.

Yasha watched intently as did we as the boys gently set the frog by the pond and he hopped into the dark water and dove under. He turned his attention back to us and smiled brightly.

“Ba-chan! Koname! I see you both are alive and kicking still.”

“Still as insolent and obnoxious as always I see,” said Koname with a grin.

“I thought ye' had changed and then you spoke,” said Kaede shaking her head smiling.

“Well we know you're well enough to walk and talk, so I'm going to assume we'll have as easy a delivery as the last one,” Koname asked looking Yasha over.

“I can only hope. It seems to be moving quicker than the last one so I'm taking that as a good sign,” Yasha responded rubbing his belly which I was assuming was tightening once more.

“Good, go ahead and enjoy the afternoon while you can. I will have Anisina show us your quarters so we can start gathering the things needed. The more we do now the less work later. I'm too old to be running around worrying where things are,” Koname said as she turned away and headed back into the palace followed be Kaede.

The afternoon seemed to fly by as I watched Yasha pace the garden until finally I watched him stop to rest against a tree when a powerful constriction was felt. When it ended I made my way to his side.

“Shall we take the boys in now for their bath,” I asked holding out my arm for him to take.

“That is probably a good idea. Perhaps a soak in the baths will take the sting off of these pains for a moment or two,” he responded breathily.

“Keimei, Reimei; time for your baths,” I called loud enough that they stopped what they were doing and made their way to our side. We slowly made our way up the three porch steps and walked into the palace with the pups at our heels talking loudly as we made our way to the baths. I stopped momentarily calling on a nearby serving girl, asking for clean robes and towels to be brought to the baths. She bowed and hastily left.

We went into the baths and Yasha and I each took a boy and stripped him and then began the arduous task of scrubbing them from head to toe. I took Keimei since he was the more rambunctious of the two. We both finished rinsing them off and then I placed them in a smaller tub just for them that we had built. They amused themselves with splashing and swimming while I helped Yasha undress and bathe.

The sight of his distended belly was quite the sight but one I found most beautiful. There is nothing more amazing and breathtaking than seeing the one you hold in your heart ripe with your offspring, knowing that they put up with all the pain and compromising comfort just to bring forth your heirs. It is humbling in many ways.

I gingerly scrubbed and massaged his body and washed his hair for him helping him rinse away the suds. When he was clean I helped him into the warm water which he immediately relaxed into. The boys joined him in the larger bath while I cleaned myself up.

I was able to join then for bit but soon realized the pains were getting closer and more intense. I stepped out first grabbing the towels left outside the bath drying off before throwing on a clean robe. I called Keimei out first and wrapped him in a towel before calling out Reimei. I had them help each other dry off while I helped Yasha out of the tub.

Once he was out and dried off I helped him wrap a robe around his body and we made our way back to our quarters. The boys were greeted at their room by my mother. She followed Yasha into their room as he kissed each boy on his head and informed them that their Obaasan was going to tell them a story before bed. Both cheered and we left them in my mother's capable hands.

Once we were in our quarters I had him sit and I brushed his long locks and pulled them back into a simple plait. He gave me a small smile and I watched as pain took over his features once more. He stood and paced and we began a waiting game. Our bed was made ready with two large baskets set aside with old blankets from Keimei and Reimei's birth lining them and Rin's new ones set aside. Two large piles of towels had been set on a table beside the bed along with a small tray of implements that I only assumed would be used in some surgical manner and a two large bowls of steaming water with empty pitchers beside them.

They were as prepared as they could be and we continued waiting. As the pain progressed Yasha knelt over the bed and when he allowed me I would massage his back and hips gently trying to ease his pain. Sometimes it seemed to work and other times it seemed to irritate him.

Time seemed endless as I watched the pain build and crest over and over again. I watched as he began to sway back and forth moving his hips, trying to alleviate pain and pressure which he said was beginning to grow. Koname and Kaede sat back watching and waiting, I watched as every so often Koname would check his progress and give him a measurement, reassuring him it would soon be time to push.

As the pain grew I watched him clench his jaw tightly until finally he let out a loud moan and with it that moan liquid came pouring down his thighs.

“About time your waters broke,” Koname exclaimed as her hand disappeared between his legs checking once more only this time she grinned and gently patted his thighs, “You can start pushing now; time to bring your first into the world.”

He nodded and took steadying breaths and I watched as he bore down moaning into the pain as he did so. He did this many more times in a semi-standing position, using the bed for support while I stood beside him offering support and kind words until he cried out suddenly.

I looked down between his thighs where Koname knelt and I watched as a blood and mucus covered head slid into her waiting hands. I felt my hand being gripped and squeezed as Yasha inhaled and bore down once more, expelling the shoulders and chest and with Koname's aide the new born gently slid from his body and into a warm dry towel. She began to gently give the newborn a thorough rub down turning it over on its belly helping it to spew out liquid and mucus and going as far as to use her finger to gently coax any remaining in its mouth and nose out and when she was done our child began to wail loudly with force letting us know that it was none to happy at having been expelled from its former home.

Yasha sighed and his thighs shook with the effort of kneeling but he continued to do so until Koname had severed the cord connecting our pup to his body.

Once the cord was tied off and snipped she gently tapped his thigh and I assisted in getting him turned around so that he could recline on the bed. As soon as he was situated Koname handed him the wailing newborn.

“You have yourself one very vocal daughter,” Koname said with a smile. Yasha held her close and smiled as he looked her over, quieting her with his touch and his soothing voice.

I watched as his body continued to contract and soon Kaede was at his side taking our daughter from his arms as he panted and sat up giving a push once more. It was much like the fist pups birth, moaning and panting a few grunts and with a little less time he had delivered another blood and mucus covered pup. I looked down at his mostly deflated belly as our second daughter was laid over his chest, crying as loudly as her sister.

Yasha held her close, using a provided towel to wipe and clean her as best he could.

“Looks like we will have to try for a son next time,” he said as he looked up with a small smile.

“We have all hundreds of years to try and as long as you are willing we can try as many times as you would like,” I said leaning down to place a kiss on his lips.

He gave me a smile before grimacing.

“Just the afterbirth, go ahead and give a few pushes and then you will be done,” I was handed our daughter as he did what he was told and was in awe of her. She was a little smaller than the first born but just as healthy. I was betting they were just like their brothers and nearly identical.

I turned back to Yasha who grimaced as Koname gently pushed on his belly. She looked perplexed and I watched unsure what was happening as Yasha gasped and sat up a bit bearing down once more.

“Seems as though you were right,” Koname said as she patted Inu Yasha's spread knees.

“I hate being….right,” he gasped as he pushed once more, bearing down and gasping. I watched as another head slide into view and with three more pushes, Koname held a wailing and flailing small newborn boy.

“And you have your male heir,” said Koname with grin holding my squirming son in her arms. Kaede came over and handed Yasha his first born; now clean and wrapped in fresh linens and took our second born from my arms so that she too could be bathed.

Once each child had been cleaned thoroughly and they all lay in Yasha's arms I couldn't help but grin widely at the sight. My mother and uncle were going to both be sad losers in the betting pool.

All three newborns were pale skinned and silver haired, the girls had the beginning of pale red markings under their eyes very similar to our fathers; one under each eye. Our son seemed to be the only one who had inherited the pale violet moon in the middle of his very small forehead and two very small markings under his eyes.

I gave Inu Yasha another kiss on his lips and slid into bed next to him. We sat and stared at our new pups as they slept, exhausted from their ordeal and thought ourselves lucky and blessed.
