Chapter 23: You are the builder of my heart

Tending to two pups was difficult but doable, tending to three was an ordeal. It was one we took in stride as three crying newborns woke us while the moon still hung in the sky, only three hours after their birth. I helped Yasha sit up and propped pillows behind him for comfort before handing him our largest and loudest crier, the first born daughter. He lowered the sheet that covered his swollen chest and brought her to his right side. She struggled at first and finally latched on suckling loudly as she took her first meal. I took our second daughter into my arms rocking her until she quieted down but she continued to let her unhappiness and hunger be known with softer cries. Our son lay in his basket awake but silent.

“See there little princess, your brother is patient. You could learn a thing or two from him,” I admonished playfully.

She made to make more noise but was thwarted by her Chue's comment, “I'll trade you. This one has had her fill and needs burping.”

I did as asked and placed a blanket over my shoulders as I took her and proceeded to gently pat her on her small back until finally she released her pent up air and began to calm. I rocked her until I felt her ease into slumber once more and I laid her in the basket she shared with her sister. Once she was in I made sure to cover her and then I lifted my son from his basket. He made no sound but seemed to silently observe from his new vantage point. His eyes were still new and everything was blurry and unfocused but it would develop more as the week went on. He nuzzled against me looking for his first meal finding nothing he finally began to voice his dislike.

I rocked him as finally his sister had her fill and handed him off to Yasha who immediately placed him against his chest. He latched on and the softest feeding sounds yet came from him. I took my second daughter and made sure she was belched and then laid her down in her shared basket.

Yasha yawned as our son nursed beginning to tire once more. He gently rubbed our sons back as he nursed out of habit, a comforting gesture he did with Keimei and Reimei often.

I watched as our small son fell asleep at Yasha's breast with Yasha following suit. I gently took him from Yasha's arms and kissed my mates forehead as I moved away caressing and patting his tiny back until he too produced trapped air and I gently lay him in his basket and tucked him in.

I spent that entire night somewhere trapped between small naps and waking at each small sound. After their first feeding the small ones slept soundly for four hours more and woke just as the sun rose and thus we began the routine of my bringing the first crying newborn to their Chichue. I switched it up so that everyone had first dibs at each feeding. I had just handed Yasha our son when there was a knock on the door followed by my mother's cheerful voice.

“We've come to see the much talked about triplets,” she said in her soft cheerful voice as she entered with my uncle behind her as was usual.

“Just in time, they all need soiled cloths changed and fed,” Yasha said with a tired smile.

My mother smiled and immediately went over to the twins basket as I followed behind her.

“The larger of the two is the oldest,” she asked as she lifted my daughter from the basket and brought her over to the bed where she set her down and began to un-wrap her swaddling cloth and disposed of the dirty garment and clean my now quiet daughter.

I watched my mother perform the dirty task with a smile and was amazed. I always assumed she had allowed all the dirty tasks to be taken care by servants and nannies but perhaps I was wrong.

She finished redressing my daughter and handed her to Uncle Shanshouto who held her somewhat awkwardly for a moment and then he seemed to compose himself as he got used to handling his grandniece. My mother moved on to my other daughter as if she was on a mission and none of us said anything to dissuade her.

Inu Yasha finished feeding our small son and I leaned over taking him from his arms and did my burping duty as my uncle brought our eldest over to be fed.

When my son had finished his release of air I found my arms emptied as my mother took to changing his cloths as well. I wasn't one to argue but I was amused at seeing my uncles arms once again filled with a sniffly bundle of cuteness.

“I do believe you and Yasha will repopulate the Inu clan in less than ten years,” my uncle said as he smiled down at his grandniece.

“I hope not,” I said smiling over at Yasha as her nursed our daughter, “I should think the stress will eventually kill both of us.”

“Not to mention I'd like a break eventually,” said Yasha as he rocked our daughter and patted her back as she belched.

“I have to say I understand. Babies are amazing and it is beautiful watching as they grow and become little individuals but I enjoy the toddler stage more than the newborn. It's nice knowing what they want instead of guessing,” my mother said handing Yasha the still unfed sibling and taking the now fed and sated one from his arms.

My mother held her grandson close and rocked him gently with a soft smile that seemed to fill her eyes and entire face.

“Do not get any ideas, dearest. I think we have enough pups running around this palace for the time being,” my uncle said as he approached.

“Oh, hush. I am just remembering when my boys were this small. I need no pups anytime in the near future.”

My uncle looked relieved and he leaned in to kiss my mothers cheek.

No other words were spoken as two rambunctious bundles of energy came running in the room carrying on with Anisina, Rin, Hagashouri who held Hissoshouri in his arms and Kouakajou following in their wake.

The three newest Inu members were passed around from relative to relative and fawned over. The most interesting moment was seeing Kouakajou holding our son in his large arms with an almost reverent look on his face. I was certain he would one day make an amazing father should he ever find the right mate and settle down.

“Have you thought of names yet,” asked my mother who had once again ended up holding our eldest daughter with the twins huddled around her.

“We had a few picked out together but I conceded and decided to let Sesshomaru to chose the ones he thought would suit them best,” Yasha said as he smiled in my direction.

I looked over at my eldest daughter and knew what to name her and her sister, “Our oldest daughter is Ranka and our youngest is Renka.”

“Beautiful `orchid' and beautiful `lotus'…not bad Sesshomaru, and your son,” asked my mother.

“We have thought long and hard and even now we are uncertain but we are considering Shion,” said Yasha as he was handed our fussing little one.

“It is a wonderful name. I think the theme of their names is quite nice. A garden of children, quite interesting,” said Kouakajou.

As I watched the twins get introduced to their new siblings I felt complete. I had the things I had always wanted. I had heirs and family and with them I had happiness.

That day seemed almost a dream as it continued on. The twins stayed with us for the rest of the day ending it by snuggling in our overly large bed next to their Chichue and myself. They seemed to want Yasha more now that he had birthed their siblings and it was understandable for one to make sure they still had a place at their parent's side and in their hearts when new babies were getting all the attention.

A day became a week and a week became a month and months became a year and we watched our brood grow and change.

I watched as our triplets crawled and then walked and began talking. I watched our twins communicate better and begin schooling as Jakken and Uncle Shanshouto split their time teaching them to write and read. When they became restless Yasha and I would take them outside on days when the weather was good and spar with them, teaching them to attack and guard.

One year lead into another and as our small world revolved around our children the one outside, the human one; became troubled and war torn once again. I would leave on occasion taking stock of our territory and helping out in the local villages when and where I could.

It seemed humans would always have war and with it much death and cruelty and those demons that preyed upon such things began to rise in numbers once more but none were stupid enough to bring their trouble where we would hear of it, knowing we would end them and with them the trouble they caused.

Yasha worried, he seemed distracted and deep in thought most of the time. When I asked about it he would smile and shake his head saying what I had already known, that he was simply lost in his thoughts. He seemed troubled by some type knowledge but he will not say just yet but I know one day he will tell me.

The Priestess Kagome, the girl whom Inu Yasha had followed for years in the hunt for jewel shards returned to her home and eventually stopped coming. Yasha seemed as though he wanted to investigate but his heart was only partly in it and after Sango mentioned a past conversation she had with the girl involving a new love interest Yasha nodded with a wisdom beyond his years and it seemed as if his worries had been put aside for the time being.

The year the twins turned six and the triplets two we received news of the old Priestess' passing. We left the palace the next day and went to the village to pay our respect. On that day I watched Yasha cry silent tears. I said nothing in front of our children and he said nothing, as if refusing to acknowledge the drops of moisture on his tanned cheeks. We spent the night in the old priestess' hut and I watched Yasha sit against the wall away from us and close his eyes with his sword by his side.

Keimei had asked him why and he gave our son a sad smile as he replied, “Wanted to sit in my favorite place one last time.”

It was heartbreaking hearing those words but I understood. It was as if he knew that the past was finally behind him, even the good parts.

I brought the children to the futon spread out on the floor and put them all to bed. When their soft snores filled the room I knelt down and sat next to Inu Yasha and laced my fingers with his. He leaned against me and though no sound was made I could smell the salty tears as they made their way down his plump cheeks, coming to land on his deep red Haori.

“No one wants a past filled with happiness to end but know that when it does you can always look forward to the future. There will be many more beings that will grace your life and leave your heart feeling full and when they too pass you feel a bit emptier inside but know that they leave a piece of themselves in you and you left yourself with them.”

I heard a soft sob at that and he turned so that I had an arm full of beautiful sobbing mate. I rubbed his shoulders knowing that he had much hurt to let go of.

At some point he fell asleep and I held him close and thought back on my own words. I could only hope that my hanyou brother and mate would live long. I was not ready to lose him anytime in the next hundred years.

To Be Continued…

Uncle John, Mallory AKA Mouse, Colleen…. Thank you for leaving pieces of yourself in my heart and for teaching me much.

Next chapter coming soon… I am writing it up now. Almost finished…. So… I had this story idea pop into my head involving Inu Yasha's small son Shion. Would anyone read it if I posted it? Inu Yasha and Sessh would be apart of it and so would the other pups but for some reason Shion's story just fell into my lap…seriously…I have chapters jotted down in pencil in a notebook.

As always…THANKS FOR READING!!!!
