InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ Could This Get Any Worse? ❯ We Meet Again ( Chapter 3 )

[ Y - Young Adult: Not suitable for readers under 16 ]
A/N: 2 reviews! YAY! ::jumps up and down for joy::

Josie n the Pcats: Ok, the pairings are Inu/Kag, whether they get together in this story or not I don't know. Now, I don't mean that they hook up with others, they just might remain single, but, there will be sequel, and they will get together in that, but in this one, I'm not sure, just have to wait see. But I promise, you will like it, if you like Inu/Kag stories. Please keep reading!

Arina: Thank you sooooooooooo much! You seem really enthusiastic about it, which makes me feel all bubbly inside. Please read and review again, it would be much appreciated.

Warning: As this chapter predicts, one of the main characters will die in the end, but, if you read the sequel which will come out directly after this one (of course), the character that passed away, will make a return to the living. So, please don't let it scare you off, I would be really upset if it did.

Chapter 3-We Meet Again
By: CowgirlUSA

The air was thick with a purple miasma that clogged the senses so that she was disoriented and weak. Kagome felt helpless, something she did not like in the least, her breathing was ragged, and she wheezed until it hurt her throat terribly. Water seeped out of her eyes due to the stinging substance of the air around her, burning and scalding her sensitive eyes.

Kagome writhed about in pain, her head turning from side to side, and her legs kicking out hitting nothing but thin air. Her wrists were rubbed raw, the burning sensation of shackles locked securely around the appendages making her feel only that much more vulnerable. She could feel her blood racing down her forearms and falling onto her shoulders, then continuing its journey further down her side.

The jangle of the metal shackles was quite annoying and stressful, for each time that they hit the brick wall and didn’t fall apart was one more step of lost hope. Kagome’s body ached with fatigue and from the struggle she had been inflicting against the restraining devices as she tried her escape over and over again.

Kagome’s throat was raw, and it burned like hot acid sliding down the back of her neck then following her esophagus into her churning stomach. She felt like retching her last meal onto the ground below, she felt dizzy and nauseous, and she pleaded for rest silently. Her body was almost completely numb, still trying to recover from the thick poison she had disappeared through.

Coughing, a horrible thought entered her pounding head, what had become of Rin? Kagome could remember the girl’s screams as the monster Naraku grabbed her waist and pulled her tight against him, securing her so there could be no escape from his hideous arms. Kagome had seen the fear and terror in those brown orbs, if only she could see through the dark of the dungeon, if only.

“Rin? Are. . .are. . .you there?” Kagome’s voice cracked, and she wet her lips in a timeless habit, swallowing hard, trying desperately to rid herself of the scratchy feeling.

“Yeah, but, I’m scared Kagome! What are we going to do?” her voice hurt Kagome’s hearing terribly, but, she was glad that Rin was alive and well.

“I know you are, just give me some time to figure away out of this,” in truth, Kagome was frightened as well, but, she had to reassure the girl that all would be well, or pandemonium would erupt.

A slight glow came from the barred window that was on the damp and moldy, wooden door. The bars obviously rusted and bent every which way, creating the scene of something out of the medieval times. The shadows danced across the walls, very faint of course, and the dancers danced a waltz as old as time through the burning flames of the candle. The damp and musty air was still, holding its ever waiting breath, someone, or something was coming.
Gritting her teeth together, she tried to break free of the hold on her arms, Kagome didn’t want anyone near her or the other woman beside her in the dark. She hissed out in pain, her scabs now broken open once again to freely pour her life’s fluid out onto the ground in great heaps. The cold metal irritated the wounds further, but alas, no matter what the pain, her will was strong, and she had to keep fighting for Rin’s life, and her own.

“Now, now, that simply will not do,” the female figure was slim, her orange eyes staring intently at those from the mortal realm.

“Yes, my mate is correct, you mustn’t fight, our master would not be pleased,” a male entered the room, his green eyes hauntingly familiar, and the female brought up memories that Kagome wanted to burry.

“Benika, Wakaki, what the hell do you want?” Kagome’s voice was dark, tainted, the black overcoming her heart once again.

“I’m glad you remember us, Kagome, we would hate it if you forgot us. But do not fret little one, your family and friends will join you soon, they will come when they find out you were captured. Now you mustn’t struggle anymore, so, sleep, sleep,” the melody of an ancient, forgotten language played throughout her head, soothing her.

“No,” Kagome’s eyes were closing, but her body fought off, forced back the spell, expelling it from her mind.

“Very well, if you will not listen to reason,” Wakaki hit the defenseless half vampire in the back of her head, sending her into a world of numbing darkness.

“There, now you will not struggle,” Benika looked strangely at the girl, trying to decipher the aura of authority that played out from the female. “Must be because she had noble blood.”

Strolling out, the couple looked disdainfully at the unconscious duo, how easy would it be to sink their claws into their fragile throats. Or to bite down into their jugular vain and drink the thick crimson blood from their living bodies. But their master forbade it, for as long as the Higurashi and Takeda lords and their companions were away, those two were under his protection, and you did not go against his wishes. Ever.

Kagome’s head hurt terribly, and a painful moan left her mouth as she awoke to the horrid world around her. Her wrists up had gone numb from lack of circulation, and she could still feel the burning sensations of the raw skin. Her eyes felt like someone was poking them with a tiny pin over and over again until they watered, and fell onto her stinging face.

“Rin? Are you up?” no reply, just what Kagome had expected, the spell had got to her, and she would be out a great deal longer than she herself would.
Experimentally, Kagome ran her tongue across the rows of pearl white teeth in wonderment. She definitely was in the realm of the undead. Her fangs had lengthened, sharp and pointed, they were lethal, like the night of her transformation. The changing was slow, for her ears were still in the same place, her fingers still dull, and her sight still impaired to the darkness, to the night.

Kagome’s arms ached with wear, and her sides stung with the pain of constant ragged and heavy breathing. Her nose tingled as if some liquid was permanently shoved up there so that the sensation would never retire from that area. Her legs dangled uselessly above the ground, swaying to and fro ever so slightly, the bottom of her tennis shoes barely scraping the hay covered floor.

A dark group of shadows gathered in front of the, there slow and silent steps setting her one edge. Kagome was worried, what could she do if these were a bunch of rogue mercenaries, out to kill her and Rin to spite that of their master. She was defenseless against any attack that they could throw her way, and though her body could sustain much more damage, Rin’s was fragile, and would surely fail her if abuse was thrown at her.

The door creaked open, and the shadows slid in, one after another, keeping as silent as the night around them. Kagome’s movement stilled but for a few moments, and then started back again with double the ferocity that she had been before. Her eyes were wide, she had escaped many near death experiences, but to escape this one was almost nonexistent.

“Rin? Please wake up!” Kagome finally yelled to her companion, trying desperately to rouse her from her enforced sleep.

“Kagome? Oh man, I feel nauseous,” Rin’s head was bowed, and Kagome could see the deep steadying breathing her friend was doing.

“Rin, this may be a good time to stop feeling sick, and to start thinking, we’ve got visitors,” Kagome watched the figures, they stood still, as if watching the two in front of them.

“What! Why didn’t you tell me earlier! Oh Kagome! What are we going to do!” Rin was hysterical, and her slamming of her body against the wall, in the last attempt to free herself, echoed painfully throughout the walls.

“Rin! Calm yourself, and think!” the figures were advancing, more confidently, and Kagome hissed and bared her lengthened fangs threateningly at the creatures.

Kagome’s words fell dead to the still struggling girl at her side, Rin was too far gone to be of any help to her now. Her wails of sorrow were loud and obnoxious, and hurt Kagome’s sensitive hearing with great amounts. Her hearing had doubled at least, but her ears had not, as of yet, transferred themselves to the top of her head.

“Shhh, quiet, you are only hurting yourself more,” the voice soothed the frantic Rin, calming her, into a sleep of bliss and peace.
“Leave her alone! She is a mere human, defenseless and weak! If you want a fight come after me!” Kagome couldn’t stand to see her friend in danger, so, in a last ditch effort, she offered a battle, hoping that they would be intrigued.

“A fight? Really, why would we want to fight you, we came to rescue you, not battle,” a new voice talked directly to Kagome and she could feel the tension of her arms release, and let her body slide to the ground.

Kagome’s body heaped onto the floor, her legs unable to hold her weight from the sudden drop. She put her tiny hands against the cold brick, steadying herself from tumbling over onto her bruised side. Her arms wrapped across her chest, rubbing vigorously at her upper arms, trying to create some form of warmth.

“Who are you?” Kagome stared up at their shadowed faces, they were all of different sizes and shapes, but all of them held the same mysterious air around them. There were three very tall creatures, all with straight hair, and looked lean but also with muscle. Another one, but a few inches smaller than the other three, obviously a couple years younger, had unruly hair that flew outwards like her’s. And then, to the side, stood two tiny figures, just children, who slightly hid behind the elder one’s in slight fear and apprehension.

“Really, I’m surprised, you do not remember us, we’re hurt,” the male’s voice was mocking, and Kagome tried desperately to place its owner.

“Kagome, you don’t think. . .” Kagome could see Rin walking hesitantly to one of the tallest figures, and with a trembling hand, reached out and touched where his cheek would be. “It is, it is! Kagome!”

Rin had latched her arms around the man she had been approaching, pulling their bodies close, molding them together. Her constant sounds of joy filled Kagome’s ears, and she desperately wanted to know who Rin recognized, and yet she did not.

“Well, I’m glad you know, but do you mind letting me know as well?” Kagome stood shakily, her legs wobbling back and forth with weakness.

Obviously Rin was in her own little world for she had yet to cease in her incoherent babbling to answer the poor confused Kagome. Her muscles were failing her, she had yet to recover, but from what she had yet to find out. Rin was fully awake and going, and yet she, the stronger out of the two, was hardly able to stand. It wasn’t fair in anyway.

Legs giving out, Kagome prepared herself to drop unto the ground, but to her surprise, to firm and strong arms wrapped themselves around her slender waist, and prevented the unfortunate descent to the ground. Gasping, Kagome stared up into a pair of amber eyes, one’s that she had not seen in such a long time. Tears streamed down, and grabbing him around the neck, the two fell to the ground in a heap of laughter.

“You jerk! You bastard! Why didn’t you tell me who you were from the very beginning?” Kagome was sprawled out on the ground, laughing with tears falling, and he laid across her stomach, not having moved from where he landed.

“It was too funny to watch your expression as you pondered on who we were,” his voice was light and merry, just how she remembered it ten years ago.

“Yeah, I’m sure it was, but as for me, I want out of here now,” the fear was evident, any minute now someone would come to check on the two girls, or they would be heard. They nodded their heads, they knew that she was right, any moment now they would have unwelcomed company, and that was something none of them wanted.
Hoisting Kagome onto his back, Inuyasha carried her out of the cell, Kagome’s legs still to weak to support her weight. Their senses searched every corner, locating ways that were safe to travel, and ones that were not. They couldn’t risk getting caught, if they did, then all of humanity would be gone. They were the only royals left that tried to protect the weak race, the others had fallen, or had been corrupted.

Following Inutashio’s amd Yamahiko’s lead, Inuyasha paced himself with his older brother, watching carefully behind them all, making sure they were safe. If they did get captured, Rin, his sister-in-law would surely be murdered, and Kagome, well, he didn’t even want to imagine the horrid time she would be put through. Most likely though, they would send her to work as a maid, one that was whipped daily, and was fed little. She would become weaker and weaker until they found her of no use, and then, they would probably tear out her heart.

Kagome watched with fascination as Inuyasha’s face changed expressions every two seconds, and even though he was preoccupied by his thinking, she was sure he was still alert to his surroundings. Her hold around his neck tightened, she suddenly felt extremely woozy, her head becoming dizzy and cluttered with unknown phrases and voices.

Inuyasha’s pace slackened, his growling warning the other’s of his discomfort The rest of the group stopped, looking at the two with curiosity. Both seemed to be in great amounts of pain, both seemed to be confused and disoriented, but there was no reason as to why. They raised their brows in question, but quickly stepped back as Kagome screamed a horrific shriek, her eyes rolled so far back that all that they could see was the whites, sweat poured off her face, and her body was stiff.

Inuyasha slumped against a wall, breathing deeply, steadying his overwhelmed head that had cluttered itself with words. Voices tangled together into one big mass of sound; roaring and hissing with vengeance. His hand flew to his chest, right above where his heart was beating, and grabbed a hold of his torso, and scrunching it as he clenched his clawed hand into a tight fist.

“We must get out of here,” her voice was raspy as she whispered the phrase passed her lips, straining to keep her body from falling.

“Kagome! What’s going on?” Rin was hysterical, her friend was barely hanging on to the world of consciousness.

“Inuyasha and I can not be in a place like this, not yet. Not until we have more experience,” Sesshomaru came forth, holding onto the shaking form of the girl who had just previously spoken, and Yamahiko threw Inuyasha’s arm across his wide shoulders.

They didn’t question her as to why, they could plainly see that she was in great amounts of pain, and so, the led the two away, helping them step by step. Inutashio led the way, picking his way carefully, he knew that they had heard Kagome’s screams, and were most likely at the dungeon, discovering the girls’ absence. And he also knew that it wouldn’t take them long to react and set out to find their whereabouts, and he didn’t want to be around when they came looking.

Sesshomaru stepped quickly, Rin at his side, holding Kagome’s hand for support, mainly her own, instead of for the girl. Rin’s face had paled by at least three shades, her brown eyes dulled with concern as her stripped feet padded against the hard stones. The dark locks of her friend were matted against the female’s face, sweat pouring off her forehead.

Looking at the fallen girl with concern, Rin looked uncertainly at the regal lord beside her, his constant reassurance calming her slightly. Tears fell, the girl beside her looked deathly ill, and so much so, that seemed to be very hard for her to breath, or even keep her heart beating its stead rhythm.

“Do not worry Rin, all will be well,” her head jerked in the direction of his voice, his grim face betrayed what he had just said.

“If that were true, how would you know?” the question floated to his ears, and he glanced in her direction, she read him to easily.

“I don’t, but I hope it so,” she looked forlornly up at his calm face, he never would show any emotion, not in the open, to him it met weakness, and that was something he could not afford.

Kagome listened half-heartedly, her eyes blurring with fatigue and other symptoms she could not place. Her limbs felt like jelly, not having any substance so that she could move them. Her arms dangled uselessly, and the continuous jumble of voices still echoed throughout the walls of her mind.

They moved with the swiftness of their race, not a pebble disturbed as their feet padded soundlessly on the cold floor. Their bodies moved as one, their feet in tuned with the others as their shapes blurred with the rushing wind around them. The moon was full, and watched on with a hidden air of a warrior, as they raced away from their prison. The bright sphere called to them, beckoned, and craved their vengeance against the ones that went against the prophets. Went against the code of their kind, so many years ago.

“It is time my brothers and sisters,” his voice was heavy with power, it echoed throughout the cavern. “They broke the law we set forth, the code that was put upon them by us. No one was to go against our wishes, for if they did, we swore that we would make the punishment harsh, but as you can see, we have failed to keep our promise, and now our children are suffering. It is out of our hands no matter what our strength. Naraku is too strong for us to manage, even with us all combined. All our hope must rely on those two, if they can not pull through, then humanity will be lost forever in a pit of dark despair.”

“But they have yet to be trained, and there is no time. They are inexperienced, how will they be able to save us all, if they themselves cannot control the power they wield?” she looked questioningly up at the ancient creature, the wisest of them all.

“I do not know, Dominique, but they are out last hope, our salvation,” the elderly male’s voice cracked, the tension in the room was overwhelming, the multitude of the situation seeping in.

“But Pembroke, sire, correct me if I am mistaken, but, does it not say in the prophecy of times, that one of the two must perish, while the other remains to guard the land?” Obadiah knew the answer before it went past Pembroke’s withered lips.

“Yes, it does state this, and for this I fear we are all doomed. For the evil will rise again, so we must have one of them on the lands of this world, but in the battle that will come, one must leave us, and with this outcome, I fear that both will perish before their jobs are complete,” Pembroke looked on with a shadowed face, to keep one alive, and the other to die, was an impossibility in his eyes.

A slight glow of warmth melted the icy coldness of her skin, heating her body, returning her once pale stricken features to that of there original healthy appearance. Her black hair was dry and caked with a sticky red substance, most likely crimson blood from her numerous wounds. The brown of her eyes were shadowed from view, she felt worthless, she felt helpless.

“We’ll find them, I promise,” his voice carried out to her, calming her aching heart, even though they were of different races, per say, she felt a close bond with the missing woman.

The gathering had been but hours ago, she remembered the others coming home with tear stricken features. Their eyes ablaze with a burning fire, growing in degrees so much so that they were gathering supplies immediately, readying themselves to leave in search of her whereabouts.

She had immediately agreed to go, that way Kiara would stay home and out of the danger of the upcoming battle. Little Shippo had ended up going as well, much to her disagreement, he had snuck in one of their packs and showed himself when it was too late to turn about. And Wakana, she was sure what was going through his head at the moment, but she did know that the chance of seeing his brother was plaguing him.

“I hope so, she’s good, even though you’re kind destroyed me family,” she looked to him for his reassurance, that indeed all would be well.

“I know Sango, but you must realize, the ones that killed your people are the ones we fight against,” Wakana looked at her sullen face, she was a skilled fighter, but, she was not a warrior, not yet.

Sango Tajiya was easily broken with any amount of emotional pain, her mind still unstable to any sort of abuse. She may be able to take hit after hit to her body, but if Naraku ever mentioned that of her family, he feared that she would lose it. And if she did, Wakana didn’t even want to think of the outcome, it could mean the death of many.

“Get some sleep, we will be entering the realm of the undead at sundown tomorrow,” Wakana watched the tiring girl, her depressed figure illuminated by the glow of the flames.

“But, won’t you burn up when the sun rises in the morning?” Sango looked up at his face and his golden locks, both seem to glitter in the moonlight.

“I will put the spell on me once it is time, until then, we must rest,” she nodded her head in agreement, and nestled herself down close to the fire in her dark rose sleeping bag.

Their feet hit steadily on top the moist grass, as they slunk like long winding snakes through the Forest of the Dark. The long spindly fingers of the trees reaching out and stretching for their bodies, grabbing and gnarling their cloth covered flesh.

Dirt was kicked up behind the warriors has they fled through the cover of the dark, the full moon lighting their winding path. Choked sobs and ragged breaths echoed, scattering the stray owl from his perch and birds from their nests. Trees swayed through the night, to and fro, bare of any leaves as they reached upwards to the sky and the beautiful sphere.

A body lay limp, carried swiftly by that of another. Their bodies blurred together as one, swift as lightening, wind ruffling their long hair. A tall waterfall, jagged rocks lining it, and a deep crystal pool of spring water swirling about, the reflection of the stars and moon in its depths.

A slightly small rise in the earth rose out, covered by many sorts of vegetation, hiding the hole with their covering. The group looked down, the ink of it now normal to them. There eyes shadowed in shadows as they stared down into their home for the last decade.

Slipping down into the covered tunnel, they disappeared one by one, being swallowed up by the dark of the ground.

“Will she be alright?” she looked up at his pale face, his features alight with uncertainty as he looked down upon the fallen ground.
“I don’t know Rin,” his voice was steady as he looked down at her nonmoving form, her chest still rising and falling with each slow breath.

“She’ll be fine Rin, don’t worry,” his steady voice turned her head, he was so sure of something that they all thought was impossible.

“How do you know?” she voiced the silent question of them all, her pleading eyes begging for an answer.

“I just do,” his form crouched down, sitting by her side, and he stared at her still form, watching her every breath. Touching her shoulder with his calloused hand, a warm glow formed, and soft yellow gleam emitting from his palm. “Kagome, its time to wake up.”

Her body moved, stirring from side to side, trying to free herself from the land of dreams. Kagome snapped her eyes open wide, brown orbs staring up at the figures in recognition. Her body jerked forward, sitting straight and holding her head with her small hand, her eyes filled with pain.

“Man, my head hurts,” she rubbed her temples, trying to rid herself of the constant pounding.

“Oh Kagome!” Rin through her hands around her neck, tackling them to the floor unexpectedly.

Shoving the sobbing woman off of her, Kagome sat up once again, trying to get her bearings straight once again. Her mind was fuzzy from the earlier events, but she could remember the pain, the voices, the roar of noise in her mind.

“Kagome?” his voice brought her out of her reveries, efficiently making her lose her train of thought.

“Hmm?” Kagome looked up and met his amber eyes, staring at him intently, searching him for what he wanted.

“You know what is happening, don’t you,” he stated it more than asking, looking directly at her face.

“Yes, I’m afraid I do, well, some of it anyways,” she stared at him, realizing it was now the time to let him know of his power, and hers.
