Chapter 4-The Hidden Cave
By: Dark Huntress

“Inuyasha, listen closely, for this is of the upmost importance,” Kagome waited to see that he understood, and agreed to listen carefully. When he nodded, she continued, trying to recall the entire story that she was told.

“Several years ago, five years to be exact, Kendrick, the Royal Prophet came to me in the night, and told me of the ancient prophecy that I was apart of. And that you are as well. In the prophecy it depicts that their will be two of royal vampire blood. One half, and one full. One female, the other male. And so, he told me that he had searched long and far, and by what the prophecy states, you and I are the closest of the descriptions.”

“Anyways, the power that we so possess is of great magnitude. We each have the same, and so we are to train together and learn from another’s strengths and weaknesses. We were supposedly supposed to have more time than we do, but, as things progressed, well, let’s just say we don’t have long to learn everything.”

“Ok, now to our abilities. Ancient artifacts, such as statues, paintings, and whatnot can speak to us. Tell of us of all the horrors they have seen throughout their stay. Nature can do the same, except, we can ask them specific questions, and they will answer. But with the artifacts, we are just forced to listen hoping that something useful will be brought up. Besides that, a special ability is thrown at us. We are able to control fire, and wind. Kind of like the benders over in the other part of the world.”

“But with this great gift, comes much responsibility. We are to save what is left of the living race from the evil clutches of Naraku. It sounds easy yes, but, the prophecy says that someone must perish, but, since the prophecy was wrong on the timing of the large battle, I am hoping that it will be wrong on the sacrifice thing too,” her voice faded, her mind wondering back to the night that Kendrick had landed in the middle of her bedroom, speaking of the strange prophecy.

“So, what you’re saying is, that you and my son are going to be the deciding factors in this great war?” Inutashio’s voice shook her from her ponderings, and she looked up into the deep golden eyes of the male, nodding her head.

“Yes, that’s exactly what I’m saying,” her voice was solid, looking to all, begging, pleading for them to understand.

“There always has been something different about you two. You always seemed to be acting older than you really were, maybe that was the reason why,” Yamahiko commented, his eyes locked onto his offspring’s.

“Perhaps dad, but I’m not sure. All I know is what Kendrick told me. And how much time we have from now,” her voice was quiet on the last part, drawing everyone attention, especially that of Inuyasha.

“How long?” his voice was kind, luring her to answer, commanding her softly to tell all she held back.

“Three months, and the final battle will begin,” tears streamed down Kagome’s pale cheeks, three months and one of them would die.

“How far have you got along in you powers?” Sesshomaru’s question was the one Kagome had been dreading, one she knew would come.

“None, not anywhere,” her voice wavered, and a look of anger crossed the male’s features, while Rin gaped openly.

Making herself more comfortable, Kagome backed away slightly, trying to hide from the boring eyes. Lowering her head, for a mere instance she felt guilty, felt responsible for all that had happened. Maybe she could of found away to train, to practice her hidden powers. But what Kendrick said had all been reality so far, she was sure he was correct this time as well.

“Why?” Inuyasha’s low voice growled out, his amber eyes hot pools of gold against her dark brown ones.

“Because, I can’t, not without you. ‘The duo cannot learn, if they do not learn from one another,’ in Kendrick’s words,” Kagome looked at his stunned face, his features now reflecting remorse for his earlier actions.

“We should all rest. Tomorrow will not be easy,” Yamahiko’s voice hurt Kagome’s heart, something about the short, terse words hadn’t been what she expected once reunited with her family.

Everyone nodded their heads in agreement, their eyes showing gloom behind comprehension. Standing, her legs shaking weakly, Kagome grasped the side of the rock cavern, balancing her swaying body from tipping over.

The room spun before her eyes. Circling and circling into one big mass of colors and shapes. Stomach feeling nauseated, Kagome grasped Inuyasha’s shoulder, her head pounding like a mighty earthquake erupting inside her tired mind. Knees buckling, she fell to the floor, oblivious to the commotion about her. Eyes going completely sky blue, the color shining off like a bright light, her face became unreadable.

‘Where am I?’ Kagome stared, her eyes wide as she realized her voice had not been spoken, but still it echoed around in the black void.

The pitch black of the space about her was nothing like the darkest night, nothing like the shadows that floated about, it was too dark, too forbidding. Breathing deeply, trying to gain some sort of composure about her, her cheeks flushed profusely, a sudden thought occurring inside her. ‘What if, no, it couldn’t be?’But the images that flashed in her eyes next, proved otherwise.

Mouth a gap, Kagome reached out and touched the now full leafed forest, the sound of birds chirping filling her ears. The sound of a rushing river, caught her attention, signaling to her, beckoning her to its depths.

Walking away from her spot on the edge of the deep woods, she walked to the crystal water that flowed with vicious strength. Staring down into the raging currents, she gasped with surprise to find that her reflection was nonexistent. In fact, when lifting her hand into the air, she could see nothing at all of it, not even a faint outline.
Sighing, Kagome sat herself upon the ground, waiting was her only choice at the moment, sooner or later, the reason why she was here would arise. Staring blankly, her elbows resting on her knees, she held her chin with her hand in complete boredom. Her other invisible hand silently played with the grass beneath her, passing the time as much as she could.

A snap was heard to her right, and Kagome’s head flew to the direction of the sound, seeking out the source. Eyes widening, her breath hitching in her throat, she watched as a young woman, possibly in her early twenties emerged from the trees, her long flowing dress billowing out behind her in brilliant waves of silk.

Long, straight glossy hair fell eloquently across her strait back. The black strands standing out brilliantly against the lighter colors of the beautiful kimono. Her pale face almost looked sickly compared to the locks that surrounded it. Her lips were painted a crimson red, her eye lids that of the sky. Brown orbs looked around, searching for something or someone.

Rustling drew both the woman and Kagome’s attention back to the thicket of foliage. A timid little boy stepped through the shrubs, his amber eyes looking about him nervously. Spotting the woman, he ran to her, his arms outstretched. Bending down, she gathered him into her arms, hugging him fiercely against her chest.

Snuggling deeper into her warmth, his nose taking in her scent, he struggled to keep his whimpers at bay. His beautiful snow hair was held securely at the nape of his neck, flowing down onto his back, and her arms. His tanned features contrasted her’s so that it looked like night and day. The red shirt he wore was torn slightly, the thorns of the forest taking their toll on the fabric. His shoeless feet hung useless beneath him, the cuffs of his jeans scraggly at the end.

Recognizing the boy, Kagome gasped in surprise, wondering who the woman was he hugged so strongly. This was not the person she thought that should be hugging him, it wasn’t the one she had grown up to know.

“Mommy? You should not be out here, you’re still sick,” Inuyasha’s voice was filled with concern for the one he called his mother.

“But its such a nice day, Inuyasha. I will be fine, the fresh air will do my health good,” her soft voice calmed his worries.

Sitting him back down on the ground, her forehead forming a light sweat that trailed down to her brow, she smiled at his kind face. Grabbing his clawed hand, the two walked side by side down the banks of the river, enjoying the cool mist that floated up. Laughing, Inuyasha pulled on his mother’s arm, talking wildly and waving his arms about.

Following, so she could keep them in sight, Kagome pondered who exactly this woman was. ‘Its not Fuji, but Inuyasha obviously thinks of her as his mother.’ Moving her head to the side, she wondered who this mystery woman was, not paying attention as another figure joined the trio.

He was just a few inches taller that Inuyasha, his hair the same hue, yet it was much straighter, and even longer in length. He possessed the same eye color, though they didn’t show as much emotion as the four year old pup.

“Sesshomaru? Well, now I have both of my boys with me,” her voice was filled with laughter as she held the two in her embrace.

Wind changing, drew Kagome’s interest away from the happy family. Her brown eyes searched the blowing leaves for the cause of the abrupt change. The clouds were gathering above; swirling together, lightening striking the Earth all around them.

Looking the way of the forest, the two boys lifted their noses into the air, sniffing. Eyes lighting up with recognition, the two ran to meet their sire who had appeared from amongst the trees. His regal appearance automatically clicked in Kagome’s head. His attire was the same as he wore to this day, but the woman he walked to still did not register.

Inutashio’s eyes were cold and uncaring as he made his way to the one that bore his mark. Her eyes shown with love, her hands clasped together in joy as she stepped forward slightly to meet the lord. The wind whipped her hair around her face, joining the force of the air as it blew south.

Reaching up, Inutashio put his hand on her shoulder, his face grim as hers turned to one of fright. Her cry was heard by the two pups, who immediately abandoned their game to race to their mother’s pleas. Blood spurted from her open wound, drenching her kimono. With tears flowing down her cheeks, she backed away from his formidable presence.

Flexing his lethal claws, he swiped at her again, blood flowing freely from several deep wounds in her body. Shrieking, a look of hatred and betrayal formed over her face, her body finding it hard to stand.

Sesshomaru and Inuyasha watched with horror, before deciding to intervene and try to save the one they called mother. Grabbing the legs of their father, they begged and pleaded for him to stop, that she had done nothing wrong. Sneering, Inutashio shoved the boys aside roughly, causing them to land on their back hard.

Putting his hands back on her shoulder, with a final smirk, pushed her into the river. Her weak body, unable to fight the current, delved deep into the river, the water turning red. Several meters away, the body of the Lady of the Western Lands floated to the surfaced.

Rushing over, the two brothers reached where their mother floated, her eyes unseeing. Holding back his brother, Sesshomaru looked at the woman with grief, knowing that it was much harder on his brother than himself. Kneeling down, the two embraced, the elder of the duo telling the youngest all would be well, that his mother was at peace.

Looking up into his brother’s identical eyes, Inuyasha saw the deep, raw hurt. Not only had he lost this one, but he had also lost his biological mother when he was born. Though he never knew her, it sill hurt to think that the woman who gave birth to you was gone without you ever meeting one another.

Watching their father warily, they saw a small woman walk over to his side, a similar cruel smirk etched onto her face. Disgusted, the two pups walked over to the couple, their heads hung low.

Looking at the pups, Inutashio swiftly hit them on their cheeks. Shocked, the two boys stepped away, scared for their lives. The evil in their sire’s orbs sent chills up and down their spines.

“You two will never go against my wished ever again! You understand!” his voice boomed loudly in Kagome’s ears. Silent tears running down her face.

“Yes sir,” their voice’s were timid, meek to the foreboding figure.

“I would like you two to meet Fuji, she’s your mother, do you understand me?” his voice was harsh at the end, the two brothers nodding their heads in agreement.

“Hi, its nice to meet the both of you,” her voice held no remorse to the outcome of the poor woman earlier, though she had clearly seen it all.

“Nice to meet you,” Sesshomaru’s voice was cold and distant, much more so than what he had been earlier.

“You two will never speak of what happened here today, will you?” Inutashio’s anger was present, and the two pups visibly shook with fear.

“We won’t father,” their voices answered in unison, and Kagome felt a swelling amount of spite build up in her.

Tears still falling, she watched the scene fade away, growing fuzzier and fuzzier, until it finally blended with the blackness from earlier. Turning around, Kagome saw the growing circle of light at the far end of where she stood. Strolling her way towards it, her heart still aching, she let the white light engulf her form, pulling her back into the world of the living.

Inuyasha looked with worry at the female in front of him, her eyes still glowing the bright sky blue as it had been for quite awhile. Blinking curiously, he felt the pressure he had felt earlier leave his head. Rubbing his temples in puzzlement, he watched the girl blink her eyes a few times.

Kagome awoke to the sight of everyone’s eyes upon her, some with worry, some with curiosity. She knew that she had been crying, for the first few tears that she felt fell onto her still wet cheeks. Sniffling, she tried to halt the onslaught of tears, with no success on her part.
Staring at the now grown Inuyasha, her eyes still glistening from her crying, she lunged herself against his warm chest. Surprised, Inuyasha watched as the girl cried upon him, seeking comfort for something he didn’t understand. Wrapping his arms around her shaking shoulders, he growled softly into her hair, calming her slightly.

Hearing the purr like growl erupt from his throat, Kagome snuggled closer to his body, trying to erase the horrible images of before. Sitting up again, she looked into his eyes, and almost instantly he realized what had happened. Ducking his head, his own orbs becoming clouded, he stood silently, offering her a hand for assistance.

Grasping his palm, Kagome pulled herself to her feet, her muscles quivering from the weight. Blankly looking at the people around her, she felt numb all over, the new information still reeling throughout her mind. Images of a small boy watching what supposedly was his real mother die in front of his own eyes.

Waving her hand, dismissing the others, she rubbed her arms fiercely trying to get the coldness to leave. Watching them turn to go, she caught the haunted eyes of Inutashio, and a shiver of hatred worked its way through her being. Thoughts running wildly about, she tried to discern the difference between the vision and reality.

Memories were fallible, like several things in life. Kagome knew that the truth of the situation could be slightly different than what she had seen, but it seemed that the jest of it was truth. Fuji needed to be watched closely, she was near Kiara, that meant that it was the perfect position to strike their weakness.

Kicking herself mentally, she came back to reality. The cold dark walls of the cave seemingly closing together slowly. Gasping for air, her lungs wheezing, she tried to regain her composure before it was too late.

Grabbing Kagome’s shaking hand, Inuyasha took off down a well trodden path. The ground was slick with moisture, so one must be careful where you put your foot. A large pool of water sat in a large room along the trail. Its crystal depths pure, and clean. Rushing of water caught her attention. A tiny waterfall was off to the side of the water. Filling the pond of sorts to the brink of where water meant ground.

Leading her forward, Inuyasha watched her face light up at the side of the bathing pool. Chuckling to himself, he strolled deeper into the very heart of the cave.

Kagome looked on in awe at the many rooms that line the corridor. Wooden doors covered the holes in which people would pass through. Many other occupants lived in the cave, which surprised her greatly. Thinking only the ones she knew stayed here, it was a jolt to learn that others stayed as well.

Walking, following Inuyasha’s lead, Kagome walked passed many rooms with wooden doors. Coming to the end, they slowed to a stop, directly in front of one of the many doors.
With a nod of his head, Kagome twisted the knob, and the door swung open gracefully. The room was lovely, to say the least. Grasping her hands together, she looked at Inuyasha with gratitude. Smiling, he patted her shoulder, his warmth seeping throughout her body.

“If you need anything, my room is just across the hall from your’s,” leaving her to explore her new surroundings, he strolled to the opposite side of the hall, and went into his room.

Racing over to the plush bed, she jumped onto the softness of it. Pillows surrounded her and comforted her overactive mind. Tonight she would sleep peacefully, but tomorrow would be a whole other adventure.
