A boy came out of the classroom. Tall and slender, but very well built, he pulled a strand of his long raven hair out of his face.
"Hey Toga!" Kichiro and Ryomaru were running down the hallway. `Oh gee… here they come now to ruin my name.' The cousins had just started at this school, and were excited to run into someone they knew. Outside of school Toga was more than happy to play with his cousins, but here… here he had a reputation to live up to, and two twerpy freshmen were not part of it.
"Can I help you?" Toga asked without even looking at them. He straightened up and made himself look even taller - if that was possible.
"God, what the fuck is up your ass?" Ryo questioned. He definitely had inherited his father's manner of speaking.
"Nothing is up my butt, thank you. And do NOT speak like that around me. It isn't proper." Toga started to walk away.
"Fine then! BAKA… we don't need your help. WE can do it on our OWN!" Ryo obviously had his father's temper too. Kichiro grabbed Ryomaru's arm.
"Toga's just being a jerk," Kichiro said. "It's alright, we'll kick his butt when we get home." Thoughts of revenge floated through Ryo's head. The boys left Toga with evil grins on their faces.
Toga glanced around to see if anyone had seen him talking with his cousins. A quick cool check proved his worst fears. A very pretty girl was by her locker, and watched the whole thing. Toga had to double take. Where had that girl come from? He knew almost everyone at the school and had not seen this girl before. Her pale, silky hair was almost as long as his, and her dark eyes sparkled. I need to find out who this girl is. Toga thought to himself.
While he was watching her, several girls joined her. A very familiar head of silver hair was among them. "Excuse me ladies, but can I have a word with my sister?" Aiko looked at him, annoyance all over her face. All of the girls but the new one giggled at being called `ladies'.
Once the two got a fair distance away from the group Aiko assaulted Toga. "What do you want? Could you not see I was in the middle of a conversation!? You always ruin everything I do." Aiko did not like how everyone in the older class referred to her as `Toga's Sister'. She was Aiko, and was nothing like her brother.
"Tell me who that pale haired girl is," Toga demanded. Aiko looked up at her brother, a mischievous grin on her face, and a twinkle in her eye.
"Oh, you think she's pretty?" Aiko teased. "She's new you know… from a foreign country. Being in my class and all, I've decided to show her around."
Toga was getting annoyed. "Does she have a name? You seem to know so much about her."
"What's in it for me?" Aiko asked.
"A name… please," Toga was still firm in his voice. Aiko laughed.
"All right, since you said, "please" I can at least tell you a name." Toga perked his ears up. He did not want to mishear. Nothing else came out of Aiko's mouth.
"Well?" Toga asked.
"I never said when I would tell you." Aiko laughed. Turning to go join her friends again, she flipped her hair over her shoulders.
"You are just going to leave?" Toga's face fell. He hated when she did that. Now he would never find out who that girl was.
Aiko turned at the sound of her brother's voice. He had never sounded so sad.
"Okay. Fine. I will tell you tonight," she said. "Now cheer up. I hate to see you blubber."

.
Toga walked into his home to a welcomed smell of cookies. Making his way toward the kitchen his mother called out a warning
"Don't you DARE touch those cookies Toga!" It was as though Kagura could read his mind. "They are for your sister's slumber party tonight." He stopped his hand midair. He contemplated eating them anyway, when thoughts of his mother's wrath filled his head.
`Oh, that wouldn't be good.' Toga winced, then he realized what his mother said. "Slumber party" meant one thing. `Oh gee, I get to be surrounded by all of Aiko's giggling immature friends,' Toga thought. Then he remembered the one with the pale hair… "OUCH!!!"
Toga had stopped paying attention and ran into the wall. * Ding dong! *
Aiko called down the stairs, "Could someone get that? I'm still getting ready!"
"Moooommmmmm!" Toga yelled, rubbing his sore nose. "Aiko wants you to get the door."
"Do you want the cookies to burn?" Kagura asked. "Now stop being lazy and get it yourself!"
Toga never disobeyed his mother. He learned his lesson a long time ago when his father and uncle tore up the back yard. That was the first time he had seen fear in his father's eyes.
Reluctantly Toga answered the door. He was expecting to get a group of giggling girls, and instead he just got one - with pale hair and violet eyes.
`Violet eyes? Could she possibly be youkai?' Toga sniffed the air. All he could smell was an intoxicating scent of flowers.
Toga's eyes were glassy as he envisioned them cuddling on the couch… then reality struck. "Ummm, do you mind if I come in?" A quiet voice spoke.
"Oh yes, I'm sorry. I do not believe I have met you," Toga said with a smile. He reached out his hand to put around her waist, while using the other one to gesture her inside.
"I am Toga, Aiko's older brother. Do you have a name?" The girl looked a little bewildered.
"Oh, yes. My name is… Lily," she stammered. She knew who he was, and she quivered with nervousness when he put his hand on her waist.
"Lily? That is such a beautiful name. It suits you very well." Toga was quite the charmer. He was extremely nervous, but was very good at hiding it. Lily looked up at him, then at her surroundings. She dropped her bag in surprise. The Inutaisho home was extremely large, and Lily had never seen anything like it.
"Does Aiko… well do you and Aiko really live here?" She stepped forward, jaw open in awe as if she were dreaming. Toga swooped up her bag and went right back to her side, placing his hand on her waist as before.
"Impressed? I can give you the grand tour," Toga offered. "My mother is cooking and my sister isn't quite ready." Lily just nodded her head. "I will take that as a `yes'."
After the tour, Toga sat Lily down in the spacious living room. "Do you approve?" he asked.
"It is a very nice home. Please pardon me for acting so weird," Lilly said, looking away. "My father is in the military, and I have only lived on Army bases all my life." Toga could smell the tears forming in her eyes. He just wanted to hug her.
Lily got up. "Thank you for showing me around. I think it's time I were to get to Aiko's room." With a sigh, Toga led her to Aiko's room. He could have spent all evening with Lily…
"Earth to Toga!" He must have been daydreaming again. His mother stood before him with a tray of cookies. "Would you please take these upstairs to your sister Mr. Daydream?" She winked at him. Without hesitation he grabbed the tray and headed upstairs. After a quick check in the mirror, and a little fix of his hair, he knocked on his sister's door.
"Bring in the cookies Toga," Aiko demanded. The girls looked at her in surprise. How did she know it was Toga -and with cookies?
Toga ignored the lusty looks Aiko's friends gave him. He turned and looked at Lily. Not taking his eyes off of her he said, "I am going back downstairs, if anyone needs me."
A few minutes later Lily excused herself, "I have to go to the bathroom, I will be right back." Lily wandered around, but couldn't find the bathroom. She was about to give up when she turned the corner and ran into the tall, built figure of Toga. "Oh I'm sorry Toga, I was trying to find the bathroom, and I…" She didn't want to admit she had gotten lost after he had given her a tour that afternoon. She really had barely paid attention to the tour, and instead had been watching him.
"Lost?" he asked. She looked away. "It happens all the time. Don't worry," Toga let a little laugh out, "I can show you again." He grabbed her hand, and took her down the hallway. Instead of to the bathroom, he led her to a room with tons of paintings - all of dogs.
"I don't want to startle you," Toga spoke, soft, his voice a little shaky. "When I first saw you, I knew that I was supposed to get to know you. Then when you came here this afternoon my thoughts were reconfirmed."
Lily just stared at Toga. Was he really saying what she thought he was? She felt her heart skip a beat as he leaned closer to her. "Oh Toga, I…."
"I need to know one thing though," he said as he gazed into her eyes. They were so close she could feel his breath on her face. She looked back at him, wandering what on earth it was that he needed to know, and why he wouldn't just shut up and kiss her.
"What.. is it.. you need to know?" she asked, her breathing heavy. Toga's body shook a little as his body cornered her to the wall. He became uncomfortable. What was this? He was nervous? Toga Inutaisho was nervous around this girl? She could not take it anymore. She leaned forward and kissed him.
Toga froze. No woman had ever been so bold to kiss him first. His eyes widened. And he looked at her face. He knew it! She was a youkai. Why else would she be to be so courageous? He kissed her back, ecstatic that he finally found someone. They stood there for a long time, bodies and lips together. Finally Lily broke the kiss. She looked at him, a smile on her face. Toga smiled back. "Finally another youkai, someone I can be with," he whispered.
Lily took a step back. "Another what?" She asked. She had never heard that word before. Toga blushed and sniffed the air. Mixed in with her intoxicating scent of flowers was another scent, a little vague, but it was definitely human. In his eagerness for her to be the one, he had assumed she was youkai.
"I… well… it's just that…" Toga stammered, searching for the right words to say. The gods must have hated him, for none came. He looked at her eyes. Those bright violet eyes were questioning him. `Those violet eyes…' he thought.
"Why are your eyes violet?" Toga blurted out.
"Contacts, but what does that have to do with anything?" She straightened up quickly, becoming annoyed. Why was he being so weird? And what did he whisper earlier?
"Lily…" Toga was still trying to figure out how to tell her. Most humans would run away, would she run too? She seemed different from those other girls.
"Lily, do you see these paintings?" Lily looked around.
"Family pets?" she asked. "Man your family must really love their dogs. I had a retriever named Gumbo when I was younger, but we had to get rid of it when…"
Toga interrupted lightly. "Not pets - family." Lily stared blankly at him. She did not understand.
"Yeah, Gumbo was like a little brother. I cried for days when daddy w…" Toga gently pressed his finger to her lips, silencing her, then he continued.
"I am a youkai, Lily. I am not human." He watched her, trying to read her emotions. "I thought with your eyes, and pale hair that you were perhaps a youkai too," he sighed. Now she was going to leave for sure.
"Go ahead and leave," he said as he let go of her. "I know you do not want me anymore."
Lily stayed. She still was confused, but she was drawn to Toga, and did not want to leave. Youkai or not, she grabbed his hand, pulled him in again and kissed him. "You are lucky I do not know what a youkai is."
There were giggles coming from the hallway. "Oh no!" Lily exclaimed. "I said I was going to the bathroom, but that was ages ago!"
Toga grabbed her arm before she could leave. "Would you like to see a movie with me?" He asked.
"Does this mean we're a couple?" Lily smiled.
"We are whatever you want us to be," Toga said as he pressed his lips to her soft hand. Lily turned a bright shade of crimson, then left the room.
Still looking for the bathroom, Lily turned the corner of the hall and almost ran into Sesshomaru, Toga's father. She stopped, half tempted to ask him for directions, but judged against it when she saw he was on his cell phone, looking grim. She apologized with a quick smile and hurried off. `How is Toga so friendly when his father is so intimidating?' Lily wondered when she saw an open door… and a sink.

The next Friday was the big date. Toga spent a good part of an hour getting ready. `Sometimes this long hair is such a burden,' he thought, as he pulled it neatly back in a low, loose ponytail. He finally settled on pairing dark pair of blue jeans and a tighter fitting T-shirt with his favorite leather jacket. The doorbell rang. Toga did a quick last check in the mirror before running down the stairs. He opened the door, and to his horror there stood his two cousins.
Ryomaru looked surprised. "Well look who decided to pull his hair back. Trying to impress us?" he laughed.
"Hey Toga! Tonight's the night we get to go to the movies together," Kichiro said.
Toga stared dumbfounded. "I'm sorry guys, but not tonight, I have a da … um plans."
"But Uncle Sesshie said you were taking us to the movies!" Kichiro looked up with puppy eyes.
"You don't want me crying to Auntie Kagura do you?" Ryo prepared to run crying and screaming. He'd perfected the act through the years, just to spite his eldest cousin.
"No! No… I will take you along, but you cannot sit with me," Toga sighed. Ryomaru's eyes lit up, an evil smirk on his face. "No pranks or you will go straight home," Toga added quickly, glaring at Ryo, who winked in response.
`This is going to be a looooooong night' Toga thought to himself.
A few minutes later Lily appeared at the door. She was stunningly dressed in a pastel blue sweater that clung to her newly discovered body and cute khaki skirt. Toga smiled, pleased especially at the sweater. Toga was a gentleman, but could not deny that he had primal desires when seeing her. When Toga told her of the misfortune of their guests she just smiled and said, "Oh I don't mind, they are just too cute." Something about her reminded him of his aunt.
Wrapping one of his graceful arms around her delicate waist, he escorted Lily to his new car, where the cousins were already fighting over `shotgun'. As they walked out the door Toga whispered in her ear, "If they try anything stupid, we'll ditch them."
The four made their way to The Megaplex without much fuss, just a little scuffle between the twins. Kichiro won the front seat, and Ryomaru spent most of the ride sitting behind Kichiro and hitting him on the head. Being a single child, Lily just laughed, enjoying the company. While standing in line to get popcorn and candy, Ryomaru and Kichiro started wooing a few freshman girls from their class who were also attending the movie. Born with the natural good looks of their father, including the unique silver hair, the boys won their own dates easily.
The group entered the theater, which was relatively empty. Toga turned to his cousins and said, "Why don't you two sit back here so you can `entertain' your guests." The freshman girls looked at the twins and blushed. Ryo looked at his brother and winked. "If you insist."
Toga was pleasantly surprised and even more pleasantly situated seven rows in front of his devious cousins. Lily sat with one hand clutching her purse, and one on her knee. `Gods she smells good,' Toga breathed in deeply, as he moved his hand to grasp hers. He loved how her tiny hand intertwined so perfectly with his. `It fits so well…'
Halfway through the movie hushed whispers tickled Toga's sensitive ears. "Oh Ryomaru, you're so bad!" one of the girls giggled. "You wouldn't dare!" Toga's eyes automatically rolled. The twins really were lady-killers, and these girls, while pretending to be modest, loved the attention.
Something small hit Toga's head. He pretended not to notice, when another object came flying by and hit the man two rows in front of him. The middle aged balding man however, turned to see who hit him. Oblivious to the fact that Toga was empty handed besides Lily, the theater was relatively empty and the man gave Toga a glower, warning him not to do it again. When the man turned back around, Toga glanced back to see Ryomaru snacking on popcorn, obviously pretending to watch the movie. Kichiro was busy whispering in his date's ear. Muffled giggles erupted from the girl. Toga turned around trying to watch the movie. `Why did I pick such a lame show?' he wondered. He glanced over at Lily, noticing how beautiful and bare her neck was. It took every ounce of his control not to attack her with kisses.
Something small landed on Lily's sweater, in rather an awkward place. Toga stared at the popcorn, and wanted to tell Lily, but decided against it. How would she know he was not staring at her chest? He put his arm around her shoulder, changing which hand held hers. It was the perfect opportunity to knock the popcorn off without her noticing. With a simple flick of his claw the popcorn went flying - right into the balding man two rows in front of him. The man got up and walked over to Toga.
"Listen here you ignorant boy. I am trying to enjoy my movie, and I would appreciate if you would not throw things at me," the man said in anything but a whisper. Toga mumbled an apology as Ryomaru, Kichiro, and the two girls stifled laughs and the man headed back to his seat.
Five minutes later, Toga felt another small hit on the back of his head. He snapped around and gave death glares to his cousins. Ryo took his arm off of his date to wave at his cousin. Kichiro looked busy. `Oh how long is this stupid movie?' Toga looked at his watch with a sigh. `Another hour of this… just great.'
Lily gave Toga's hand a gentle squeeze, then leaned over to him, "Just ignore them, they are up to no good."
Toga looked at Lily, who stopped watching the movie and was staring intently right at him. She passed her fingers, which were slightly salty from popcorn, over his lips. Toga leaned over and buried his face into hers. This is why he had chosen the lame movie. He was no longer paying attention his surroundings. He had no clue what was going on in the movie - he even ignored the catcalls from his cousins. Unfortunately, he failed to realize the final piece of popcorn hitting the man right on his bald spot.
"Hey you!" It took a moment for Toga to register what was going on, Lily made him lightheaded - in the good way.
"Hey punk! I'm talking to you!" The man was furious, his face a bright tomato red, but the only thing Toga noticed was the piece of popcorn stuck to his thinning hair. He laughed.
"What, do you think this is funny?" Lily started to laugh as well.
"That's it you two! I'm going to get you banned from this theater!" He stomped off, and sure enough five minutes later and usher came and asked the two to leave. The twins and their dates were howling, and while Toga was grabbing his jacket he heard Ryo say to his girl, "I told you I would do it." Toga shot him daggers. How could he have done this on purpose? As they left Ryo said to Toga, "You can't get mad at me. You are the one who told me to `entertain' my guest." Toga wanted to smack himself.
Outside of The Megaplex, Toga frantically searched for his car. He was horrible at remembering where he parked, and even worse when he was flustered. His night was ruined, his perfect date a disaster. When he finally found it, Toga looked at Lily and began to apologize for his cousins' behavior.
"Oh Toga, don't worry about it!" Lily smiled, and Toga's anger slowly faded.
"As much as I like you, you have horrible taste in movies, I was wanting to leave anyway. And look on the bright side - you got to ditch your cousins."
Toga was so happy that he grabbed Lily and embraced her, wasting no time in finding her lips with his. A soft chuckle came from his mouth. "What is so funny?" Lily asked.
"Oh. I just realized the twins are going to have to walk home."
It really was the perfect night.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
A few days later Lily was over to visit. She was visiting Toga this time, and not Aiko. Aiko answered the door. She was bitter that her brother got what he wanted. He won, yet again. Aiko went to fetch her brother when she smelled the familiar scent of a tear. Lily was crying. "This will be interesting," Aiko said to herself.
When Toga came down, all smiles, Lily half-smiled back.
"Will you come outside with me for a few?" she asked. She was obviously sad, and Toga raised his eyebrows at the request. He agreed.
Lily sat down on the doorstep. Toga sat beside her then motioned for her to put her head on his shoulder. Tears poured from her face. His nose stung from the strong saline smell and his eyes too began to water.
"Toga, I have enjoyed our time together. I do not care what you are, you will always be special to me," Lily said through her tears. Toga looked at her, full of confusion. What was she trying to say?
"What is wrong Lily?" He never had seen her so sad, and it made his heart twinge. He wanted her to stop crying. He wanted to hold her. He wanted to know what made her sad, so he could make it go away. Lily was his world. If she was hurting, he would too.
"I… I was so lonely until I met you Toga," Lily was having problems saying her words. "You have been everything to me, and these last few weeks have been the happiest I have ever been." She wiped away some tears with the back of her hand, only succeeding in smearing some mascara from her eyelashes.
"I actually thought for a moment that we were meant to be." Toga stared at her after these words. He too thought this, and still did. Why was she speaking in the past tense? He was there, in front of her, open hearted and still loving her.
"My father suddenly had to be re-stationed, I'm leaving tonight." Toga forgot to breathe. Lily got up. "I will miss you," she whispered. She kissed his forehead, and turned to go. He reached for her arm, for one last embrace, but she slipped from his hands. Even his strong youkai grasp could not keep her.
"It's easier this way Toga. I will write frequently and call you from the base sometime Toga," she hollered over her shoulder, purposely avoiding his eyes. She rushed away to her father's car, which was waiting down the driveway. As soon as she got into the car, she started drowning in her tears.
Toga sat on the doorstep, watching her as she turned out of the driveway. He did not move until his mother called him for dinner.
He finally found someone that made him happy, and she was gone.
