Chapter 9

Guilt

Everyone woke up the next morning. They'd been woken up by a growling sound. They looked for where it was coming from. Then they noticed Kouga was missing and what happened last night came into their minds.

Suddenly Kouga leapt from the woods and landed in the middle of their sleeping circle. He stood above the now burnt out fire with his blood red eyes. He flexed his claws and looked at Kagome.

Kagome looked at him knowing it wasn't really him. She stepped away from everyone. "What the hell do…" Inuyasha started saying.

"Sit." Kagome said. "Don't worry I have an idea." Before he could get up again she put a shield around everyone.

"Okaa-san." Inuki said. "Be careful this time."

"Hai." Kagome said. She ran into the woods. If everyone saw what she was about to do they would probably worry about nothing.

It took Kouga a couple of seconds to realize she'd run. When he did he shot after her as fast as his legs carried her. He of course caught her in no time. Kagome stopped and faced him. "Kouga it's me Kagome remember?" She said.

Kouga's eyes flickered from red to its original color. His eyes stayed red. He growled and advanced toward her slowly as if afraid to scare his prey away. When he was about a foot away from him she screamed, "Kouga stop right now."

He stopped and looked confused. She could tell in his eyes he was fighting for control over his body. While he was distracted she ran to him and put her hand over his heart. She concentrated and purified whatever it was that was taking over him.

He clawed her shoulder before the evil spirit flew away. Kagome ignored the pain and purified the spirit before it could get away. Then she watched as Kouga fell to the ground. She bent down over him. "Kouga?" She shook him lightly.

He moaned, a sign of him awakening. "Kouga are you ok?" Kagome asked.

"Hmm?" Kouga said. He opened his eyes when the smell of Kagome's blood hit him. "What happened?" He sat up and looked at her wound.

"You're ok." Kagome said.

"What happened to you?" He asked. Then he saw what had happened replay in his mind. "I did this?"

"Well you didn't mean to. I knew it wasn't you. I got rid of the problem so you don't need to worry." Kagome said. She didn't want to make it sound like it was his fault. It really wasn't his fault but he was the kind to blame himself.

"That's no excuse I should've tried harder to fight." He said. He wrapped his arms around her trying to avoid hurting her. "Gomen."

Kagome patted his back with her good arm. "Don't worry about it. It wasn't your fault." She said weakly before passing out.

"Kagome? Kagome?" Kouga yelled when he felt her body go limp. He picked her up and ran to the rest of the group. They were stuck in the shield until she fainted.

"What the fuck happened?" Inuyasha said when he saw Kouga carrying Kagome. He could smell the wound. He could tell she lost a lot of blood by the smell of it.

Kouga kept his head down and let Inuyasha take Kagome in his arms. "I hurt her." He said sadly.

"I'm sure it wasn't your fault." Sango said trying to make him feel better.

"What happened to Okaa-san?" Inuki yelled.

"Is she ok?" Shippo asked.

"She'll be fine." Inuyasha said. He set her down on her sleeping bag. Kagome's shoulder's glowed a bright blue light and flashed until it disappeared and the wound was gone. She opened her eyes and looked around.

"You're ok." Reiha said.

"Hai. Remember I told you I had healing powers." Kagome said.

"What the fuck did you do this time?" Inuyasha yelled. He was mad that she'd run off and locked him in her shield so he couldn't help. Sometimes he wished she wasn't a miko.

"I purified the evil spirit that took over Kouga." Kagome said.

"Why did you run off?" Sango asked.

"Well I didn't want you to worry and the spirit might have gotten into one of you." Kagome said.

"What if it had gotten into you huh?" Inuyasha said. "Then what would you have done?"

"I would've purified it when it entered my body baka."

"How did you get hurt?" Miroku asked.

"I guess the thing knew what I was going to do and tried to do some damage before I did it." Kagome said. She looked to Kouga. "It's not your fault. I healed it anyway."

"I should get to my pack." He said with his head still bowed. "Gomen." He whispered before running off.

"He never listens." Kagome said. "I told you I'd be careful didn't I." She said to Inuki.

"Hai." Inuki said. "I'm hungry."

"You would get hungry at a time like this." Inuyasha said. Then his stomach growled.

"You're the same way." Kagome giggled.

"Shut up. I haven't eaten breakfast yet." Inuyasha growled. He was a little embarrassed but he wouldn't show it.

"I'll start cooking then." Kagome said.

"I'll help." Sango said.

"I'm going to get some water." Kagome said. "I need to wash the blood off of my shoulder anyway. Inuki, Shippo, Reiha do you want to come?"

They all nodded and followed her. She had to have Inuki and Shippo tell her where the river was. She asked Reiha to come too so she wouldn't feel left out.

"Well it seems like Kagome can handle everything by herself." Miroku said.

"Yeah well every time she does something like that it takes ten years off of my life." Inuyasha said.

"You worry about her too much. You're so overprotective of everyone." Sango said.

"Feh." Inuyasha said. "If you went most of your life without a family you'll protect your new family with your life."

"I know how you feel Inuyasha." Sango said.

"I think everyone but Kagome, Inuki, and Reiha understand." Miroku said. "Kagome's always had family on her side of the well and Inuki and Reiha were born into loving families."

"Yeah but all of us including Shippo and Kohaku have lost our families." Sango said. "Where is Kohaku?"

"He's in the woods somewhere." Inuyasha said. "Don't worry I don't smell any youkai around and Kirara's with him."

Kagome, Inuki, Shippo, and Reiha all came back from the river. They were laughing about something. The bottom of Reiha's yukata was wet. "What happened?" Sango asked.

"Shippo tripped and knocked Reiha in the water but she caught herself and only got her feet wet." Kagome laughed.

"Come on Reiha lets get you changed." Sango said. She grabbed another yukata and they walked behind some trees.

After a while everyone had eaten. Everyone gathered their things and headed home. They couldn't wait to sleep in their own homes.

They had finally made it to their village. It had taken them three days but they were finally home. Everyone walked into their own homes and flopped down on their futons. "It's good to be home." Kagome said.

"Hai." Inuyasha said. "It was nice to travel again though."

"It would have been better if none of the bad stuff happened." Kagome said. "At least no one got hurt."

"Did you forget you passed out and got your shoulder cut?" Inuyasha yelled.

"Oh yeah. I forgot. Well the cut healed." Kagome said. "I'm always getting cut on the same shoulder."

"One of these days that shoulder is going to get damaged permanently." Inuyasha said.

"Hai." Kagome said. "We should go see my family now that we're back. I'm sure Okaa-san's worried."

"Fine we'll go." Inuyasha said. As much as he didn't want to get up he did. "I'll get Inuki."

"I wish we could find a way for Shippo to go." Kagome said. "I'll take him to Sango's while I tell her we'll be gone for a couple of days."

A few minutes later Shippo was at Sango's and Inuyasha, Kagome, and Inuki were all at the well. They all jumped in together and jumped out. Kagome walked over to the door and opened. "Hello anyone home?" Kagome said.

"They're all home." Inuyasha said.

"Oh never mind then." Kagome said. They all walked into the living room to find everyone watching TV.

"Kagome, Inuyasha, Inuki you came to visit." Kagome's mom said.

"Hai, we just got back." Kagome said. "Come have a seat I'll start making dinner."

"Inuki do you want to play video games?" Souta asked.

"Hai." Inuki said. They both ran upstairs to Souta's room. Even though Souta was fifteen didn't mean he didn't still play video games. It's just now he had Inuki to play with and not Inuyasha. He did ask him if he wanted to play though.

While eating they told everyone what happened. Souta barely ate any of his food. He was too into the story to eat. After dinner Inuyasha and Kagome went into their room and Inuki went with Souta.

Inuyasha stopped as he transformed into his human self. "Dammit. All this shit happens and I forget it's the new moon." Inuyasha said.

"Well at least we're in my time. We're a lot safer here than in Sengoku Jidai." Kagome said.

Suddenly Inuki ran into their room. "It's the new moon." He said. Inuki looked just like Inuyasha in his human form except he had black hair with silver streaks and not silver hair with black streaks.

"I already know that." Inuyasha said. He hated being reminded of his `disability' as he calls it.

"Oyasumi." Inuki said and went back into Souta's room. Inuki didn't mind turning human. His youkai blood wouldn't return for another day though. He was human for two days where Inuyasha is only human for one day.

"Inuki's not bothered by it why are you?" Kagome asked him.

"You ask me that every new moon and I tell you the same thing every time. Because I feel weak, and I can't protect you guys properly." Inuyasha said.

"Fine I still don't see what the big deal is." Kagome said.

"Kagome just shut up and go to sleep."

"Well if you're going to be cranky maybe you should go sleep with Souta and Inuki." Kagome said. She pushed him out of the room and locked the door.

"Aww come on Kagome I was just kidding." Inuyasha pounded on the door.

"Oyasumi." Kagome said.

"Dammit." Inuyasha said. He walked to Souta's room.
