Inuyasha sat on a high stool in the kitchen watching his mother make cookies, a lollipop protruded prom his small lips. Swinging his feet in childish boredom he gazed around the kitchen, taking in every detail. The soft pink cherry blossom wallpaper, the small lacey curtains pulled back to reveal the bright, beautiful summer day, the flowers just outside the window, and his mother, bending over to push a batch of white chocolate cookies into the oven. Standing back up she pushed the door closed, wiping her hands on her soft pink apron. She undid the cloth holding her hair up and let the long black silk fall around her shoulders. Slowly she turned to her son, he could already see the sweat smile on her lips, he had memorized it… the smile she showed just for him

He wanted to jump down from the stool and run to her, but his foot had caught on something. He struggled, trying to pull it loose. He looked up to ask his mother for help, but all he saw was a large white light coming at him quickly. A loud shrieking sound forced him to cover his ears. It was a train! A train was coming through his kitchen! He reached down to free his foot, but he wasn't in the stool anymore. He was on some train tracks, and he was stuck there. The train was coming closer, blowing the whistle louder. He covered his ears, crying out as the light became too bright.

He sat up in bed, panting. Beads of sweat rolled down his face stinging his eyes. He was surrounded by a stuffy darkness, like a large blanket had been draped over him, smothering out his air. A small sound, chirps and squeaks, reached his ears. Shoving back the covers he walked carefully to the sound, grabbing as handful of cloth he threw back the curtains to reveal a bright and sunny day, just like the one outside his kitchen window, except that instead of buildings in the distance stood mountains and trees. A squirrel jumped down from his perch on a branch to tap on the window, curious about the figure that just emerged from the darkness.

Inuyasha smiled, dressing quickly in some shorts and a t-shirt he headed down to the kitchen for breakfast, wondering if Miroku was here yet.

~*~*~*~*~*~

Miroku's mouth hung open, the spoon which was once clutched in his left hand now clattered back into the cereal bowl, sending small droplets of sugary milk to dot the cherry wood table. He stared at the elderly couple across from him like they had suddenly sprouted wings and flew around the kitchen several times.

“School?! You want him to go to SCHOOL?!?!?!”

Kaede sighed, taking a deep breath then went to explain.

“What's this about school?” They all jumped and turned to see their new silver haired companion descending the last steps of the stairs; walking over to the table he smiled at Kaede and Totosai before sitting down to pour himself some Tootie Frooties.

Miroku was casually dressed in loose, but not baggy, faded blue jeans and a Hot Topic T-shirt with Foamy the squirrel on the front flipping someone off. His dark brown hair was damp, meaning he had taken a shower before coming over, and hung loose around his face, barely touching the tops of his shoulders.

Kaede wore a cheery bright blue housedress that clung to her, she was a bit chubby, not big, but not really thin either, and wore her long grey hair in a braid down her back. Her face held a reserved, worried smile, as though he was a small child walking in on a secret conversation.

Totosai was a tall thin old man with a slight stoop in his posture. He was once in the military and had fraught in the Second World War, but on the loosing side. A kamikaze in training who never got the chance to fly he fell in love with Kaede, an English teenager in the camps, and left with her when the war ended. They came to America to rebuild their lives and soon wound up in Kernville. Totosai was not one to hold back on information, and Inuyasha had immediately taken a liking to him, for his brutal honesty had reminded him a lot of his brother.

Scratching at his receding hairline Totosai looked straight at Inuyasha and said. “We're thinking about enrolling you in the high school here.”
