InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ Daddy's Letters ❯ Daddy's Letters ( One-Shot )

[ T - Teen: Not suitable for readers under 13 ]

Disclaimer: I don't Inuyasha or the book The Killer Angels where I got most of my information.

I'm studying the Civil War in history right now and reading the book The Killer Angels (good book) which the movie Gettysburg is based off of. I tried to keep the facts as much I could. The letters may seem choppy but his in a war and his not worried about grammar. If your confused about anything I'd be happy to try to answer it as well as I can. Hope you like it.

Daddy's Letters

June 30,1863. 20 miles out of Pennsylvania
My Dearest Kagome,
The war has been going on for three years now; it's the third summer of this god forsaken war. I've been in since last fall and it seems like an eternity. I miss Maine; I miss its cold, black waters. We started out with a thousand good men, but after Fredericksburg there's less then three hundred of us now. We're under the command of Colonel Chamberlain. He's a good man, one of the few I've seen. We just got more men from the old 2nd Maine, 120 men. Kagome if we lose this battle coming up then we lose the war, I don't our son growing up in a world were men own other men. Oh and I thought of a name, Shippo, I know we don't know whether its a boy or a girl but I have a feeling its a boy. I pray to god everyday that I'll see your beautiful face again, that I'll see our child being born. I still don't know what happened to Sesshomaru yet; I'm just waiting on your next letter to tell me. I just know he was shoot, they keep me in the dark. Were moving out now so I must stop writing.

I love you so very deeply,
Your Inuyasha.

Love,
Fighting broke out and we're headin' right into it. We did nothing but march all day. It's hot love, too hot to be marching in uniforms. The Southerners have an upper hand with this heat because I reckon' their use to it. Out of the 120 men I told you about 116 chose to fight with us because of Chamberlain's speech. I overheard him say to his brother something about "Nothing like God on earth as a general on a battlefield." Its rather true if you think about, they can send me into a charge were they know we can't win only to be shot and killed. We're in a small town call Gettysburg beautiful place, but not my Maine, not my home with you. Today a Major General named Buford, a cavalryman, held the high ground until another Major General named Reynolds got there. Reynolds sadly was killed. We should be in action tomorrow love. I pray to survive what lies tomorrow to see you. How are you feeling? I got your letter yesterday, so when I get home a fresh apple pie will be waiting right? Tell mother and everyone I love and miss them. Tell them I'm fighting for em' to em' free. Tell my good old big brother that I am truly sorry about the loose of his arm, though he's now safe up there with Rin. Tell him maybe I'll get lucky and get soot in the foot or somethin' and get sent home, only I'm not that lucky. I do miss your cooking...I'm lucky if my meats cooked all the way. Keep praying for me as I do for you.

Your man in uniform,
Inuyasha

Dearest,
They moved us up to a hill called Little Round Top. It's pretty steep with trees growing everywhere. Told us that the Rebs was coming up this hill to attack the Union from the rear. Honey we're the extreme left of the Union line. We can't let them though. We can't withdraw under any conditions, if we do the Union can fall. We're fighting with the 83rd, 91st, 118th, 155th Pennsylvania, 44th, 140th, and the 146th New York. Among a few others. The Rebs should be comin' any minute now; it's a painful wait. I mush go now.

In hast,
Inuyasha

Hello beautiful,
We kept the hill yesterday. Damn hard too. Those damn Rebs kept withdrawing then moving to their right, so then we'd have to keep moving to our left. Did it a few times, hard not to get shot while ya moving and running and trying to shot back. Then we started to run out of ammo, I had none left and I was looking for some from the fallen soldiers. Chamberlain got shot in the leg, but lucky him it shot his sheath for his saber. No harm done to him. Then he ordered a charge, we had no other choice, with no bullets left, we put on our bayonets and charged down that hill. Many Rebs, to our surprised, just gave up. I guess they figured they couldn't win. Then they sent us to Big Round Top to rest for a job well done. Half the Regiment is either killed or wounded. Today we didn't fight, but we were under attack. Enemy cannons firing down upon us. Oh and honey...I'm coming home. I got hit in the leg with some metal. Doc says I'll be fine but I can no longer fight. I'll walk with a limp the rest of my life, but I would die from it. Well to be honest it was Chamberlain who's sending me home, like I send before real nice man. Its raining pretty bad down here so my leaving will be delayed so this letter should reach you before I do.

See you soon,
Inuyasha

P.S. We won the battle!

"Mommy read daddy's letter again" A little six year old boy with red hair and green eyes was sitting on his mother lap as she rock back and forth in front of their fireplace.

"Honey its the third time I've read his Gettysburg letters tonight, you should be going to bed." His mother had beautiful black hair with bright blue eyes. She laughed at her child's antics.

"But mommy please."

"Shippo listen to your mother. You have her reading them just about every night. Aren't they getting a little boring?" A man with long black hair limped into the room; he's violet eye shinning at his son.

"Daddy can I ask you something?"

"Yes anything for my favrite son." As he picked Shippo up from his mother's lap and carried him to his room.

"But daddy...I'm your only son. But anyway, what made you try so hard to fight in the war. So much that you got hurt? What was so important?"

"Your mother and you. Though you weren't born until after I got home. I wanted you to be safe. I love your mother and wanted to see her again. I wanted to see you, watch you grow up to be a fine young gentleman. And of course your mother apple pie, best in the county." His young boy laughed at his father. When he grew up he wanted to be just like his dad. "Well let's get you off to bed, it's late already."

"Goodnight daddy."

"Goodnight my boy." He walked out of his son's room and in to his own where his wife was standing in the doorway laughing.

"I knew you only came back for the apple pie. Inuyasha what am I going to do with you after all these years." She continued to laugh. Inuyasha started to laugh as well.

"No that's not the only reason; your brownies are to die for too." They laughed even harder."No, Kagome, you can't understand how much I missed you. I was always afraid of getting shot and dieing and you not knowing, you thinking I'm ok, alive somewhere. I wouldn't be able to live with it."

"Well I'm just happy you came back whole. A limp is nothing, plus your limp is barely noticeable anymore. I was afraid that you'd never come back, that I'd be sittin' on the porch, an old lady waitin for her husband to come home. Many of the wives still are out there waitin'. I've talked to one, she says her Frank will be coming back any day now. I wouldn't be able to live like that." Kagome started to cry and Inuyasha just pulled her into his arms and held her close. It was six years after the war ended but it felt like yesterday. He was a lucky one, he came back with all his limbs, hell he came back home, and most didn't.

He had everything he could ever wanted, his wife, his son and his freedom. He could die a happy man...at a good old age of course. My compliments to the Colonel.
