Their eyes met as they stood on opposite sides of the dimly lit room.
She watched the young, silver-haired man raise an eyebrow as a small smirk of amusement crept onto his face. She looked away quickly, silently hoping that he had not noticed the blush furiously spreading across hers.
She had been watching him all night, indulging herself in stolen glimpses of the exotically handsome man. This was not the first night she had spent watching him enjoy a few after-dinner drinks. She had seen him here several times before, but always lacked the nerve required to speak to a beautiful creature such as he. Eventually, she decided that she would just watch him, that she would be content with only looking, never touching. This was her plan.
The plan had not included being caught.
She glanced his way again only to find that he had moved and was now, to her utter mortification, casually walking towards her. Her pulse raced as he drew nearer. Her heart pounded wildly. She was certain that it would burst from her chest at any moment.
She suddenly wished she were nursing a different drink . . . something much, much stronger than water.
He stopped a few feet in front of her. She had never seen him at this close a distance before. His long silver hair looked as though it were silk. His eyes, which she thought might have been hazel or light brown, were actually quite an interesting shade of amber. Unusual markings graced his high cheekbones, lash lines and forehead. Tattoos? No. Maybe birthmarks?
With neither his gaze wavering nor his countenance betraying any of his innermost thoughts, he gracefully extended a hand to her. She took it without question.
He quickly pulled her in. She gasped, surprised to find herself pressed against his tall, muscular form. He ran his other hand through her dark hair, stopping briefly to examine the curious braid that lay on the right side of her head. It continued to travel down her spine, his fingertips softly grazing the skin left exposed by the open back of her dress. The feathery touches sent chills shuddering through her.
She was finding it very hard to think clearly.
Somewhere beyond the fog that clouded her mind, the band began to play another set. A song with a Latin rhythm brought a ghost of a smile to his lips. The mischievous look he gave her sent the temperature in their small corner of the universe skyrocketing.
Her handsome silver-haired stranger dipped his head and huskily whispered three words as his lips delicately brushed her ear.
“Dance with me.”
She couldn't say no.
